Connecting with a local church and supportive community can provide a source of hope and guidance. Off-gassing and finding joy and laughter in life are important for self-care and rejuvenation. ABOUT OUR GUEST (In his own words) I write, surf, pray, follow Jesus, and eat donuts. I am passionate about helping anyone feeling hopeless see that you always have choices. I love walking alongside those who are hurting to give them the encouragement and hope they deserve—whether that's face-to-face or online. I love my wife of sixteen years, Kristie, our four two-legged children, our two four-legged children, and appreciate God's gifts of donuts, surfing, and Maui. The simplicity and security of my Southern Californian childhood quickly came to a halt the day my parents divorced when I was eight. I was raised by my father, a Vietnam vet afflicted by the demons of his past.Being a father never came naturally to him, and to say my childhood years were rough would be an understatement. Imagine the environment it would take for a ten-year-old child to consider suicide. When I was a sophomore, the school system finally tossed me out. I finished my entire school career without reading a single book, completing a homework assignment, or making any true friends. An urge—what I now know was a calling—to serve people inspired me to join a local volunteer fire department. At age 18, I watched my class graduate and receive their diplomas. I was a seasonal firefighter, across the street on the back of a fire engine, hoping no one would recognize me or sense my shame. While working as a fireman, I began a downward spiral. One year later, I found myself in downtown Oakland, assigned to one of the toughest firehouses in the country. Despite my past, I excelled at my job. Against all odds, becoming a decorated firefighter saved my life, but it didn't save my soul. I continued to walk in the dark, spiraling down into the pain of hopelessness. I was at the end of my rope when a girl entered this broken guy's life and showed me something I had never seen or felt before. I am a bruised and broken man who has been restored by God's grace and I want to share it with the world! When I first started my Facebook page “Jesus. He is all we need” I never expected it to grow the way it has. It has been a total blessing. Being connected with hundreds of thousands of brothers and sisters is something very special. At some of their darkest hours, I'm so lucky to have been able to remind people of the love that Jesus has for them. We all have a story to tell! Unfortunately, most of us want to keep the darkest, and most helpful, parts to ourselves. While this is understandable, there is something helpful to our healing as well as the healing of others when we are able to talk about the difficult things that we have experienced while pointing to the hope on the other side. My guest today, Jason Sautel, has both lived and modeled this. A retired Oakland Firefighter, Jason has taken the darker parts of his life and used them as a way to challenge and encourage others. Through books, podcasts, and now an upcoming movie, he continues to help others understand that, "Jesus is all You need." This conversation was helpful to me, and I know it will be a help to you as well. When Jesus set about gathering His disciples, He chose people from very different backgrounds. His disciples included fishermen, a tax collector, perhaps one of royal blood, and a revolutionary. Not only did they find a working commonality, they were united and transformed through their relationship with Jesus. After Jesus' ascension, this same rag-tag twelve took the good news that Jesus taught to the farthest reaches of the world. Today's guests, like Jesus' disciples, have come from very different backgrounds and taken Jesus' love and message to very different destinations. So, have you ever walked through fire? Sometimes probably feeling literally like you're burned? Jason Sautel has, and in fact, he has the scars to talk about it. But additionally, he has this bravery, this bravery that maybe was instilled in the fire, or maybe instilled in the training to go into the fire because he was a firefighter for 20 plus years. But now he stands in a place where all he wants to tell you that Jesus is all we need. He talks through the stories that he experienced as a firefighter with The Rescuer, a book you must get your hands on. His stories are not only magnificent but about the magnificent perspective that God brought to them. Hard stories, difficult stories, fire, expansive stories. But Jason Sautel is more than just a story. He's a man telling the ultimate story of the love that Jesus, our father in heaven has for you. My next guest is a veteran firefighter who has been through the fire, and has come out the other side a better man. Jason Sautel shares his personal tragedies, how the love of his life saved his life and what role faith plays in his life. Jason has pulled people out of fires, talked people off bridges and rescued many. But during these heroics acts of bravery, Jason needed to be rescued. He was coming apart on the inside and was overwhelmed with grief, loss and tragedy. A series of emergency rescuing calls imprisoned him in darkness. At one point, it got so bad that Jason decided to take his own life. But during the chaos and storm, Jason met a women that changed everything. She demonstrated authentic love and grace. While dating this women, his life began to change. The darkness lifted and Jason was seeing and feeling hopeful again. In a triumph and heroic conclusion, Jason has learned to put his trust in the true "Rescuer." His life has been rescued by The "Rescuer." Jason's life has been changed forever, at one point, "All I knew was that nearly dying in the high-rise was a turning point. So I prayed." Maybe you've heard someone say “Well, if you really knew me, you might not like me…” or maybe you've even said that to yourself. There can be much fear in being truly known—will I still be loved, despite my mistakes, despite my desperate thoughts, despite that I might not ever be enough on my own? The resounding answer to that question from God's perspective is yes. God promises to love us with an everlasting love, and is continually drawing us to Himself with loving kindness, as we're told in the scripture (Jeremiah 31:3). Our guests this week hit lows in their lives they didn't know if they'd recover from, and just when they lost hope, they turned to God only to find that He was there, loving them despite their mistakes, fear, and pain. And I was just at the front of the altar crying my eyes out, letting Jesus know everything that He already knew, that I didn't want to live anymore without Him, and that day I just realized what the cross was, like, it just hit me in such a beautiful way that He had died for me. He already knew everything, and that He loved me. And it can still fill me with love.” - Rosie Rivera “Power comes with His word. I can trust that no matter what is going on with the world, as long as I am holding His hand, I am safe and I am on the right path. It reminds me that in the highs and the lows, He is the same.” Rosie Rivera “No matter what goodness of this world I'd try to throw into it, it would not seal it up and it would actually make things worse. So being a firefighter that was called to help other people but had no idea how to rescue himself, it was really challenging, especially at that point in my life.” - Jason Sautel “At the end of the day, all that is on that fire truck and under all that gear and behind that badge is a human being who just wants to help other people.” - Jason Sautel “I started recognizing Grace, even though I didn't realize what it was at the time, in the form of people being nice to me when I didn't deserve it.” - Jason Sautel “I'm just praying for people that draw closer to God and I'm praying for people to put their faith in Jesus. And for those who have, I'm praying that they will reflect on what their faith truly means, because I have learned over the many years of responding to the bad stuff of this world, I can't fix anything, nor can time. Time alone heals nothing. Time with Jesus heals everything.” - Jason Sautel ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PrbuwH Video Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PsmEkJ What's Good? For most of us, life-altering tragedies are something we experience in rare instances. For a firefighter in a big city, they're everyday occurrences. Working as a first responder in the Oakland Fire Department, Jason Sautel saw suffering, tragedy, and death constantly. Jason looked to his job to make something of his life and to redeem his troubled childhood, but without any hope to draw from, he eventually ran dry himself. The misery he saw on a daily basis was too much for Jason, and at his lowest moment, he planned to take his own life. Instead, Jason found Jesus and learned that there was hope even in the worst circumstances. In the wake of the fires currently raging in California and other parts of the western US, it's perhaps clearer than ever just how much of a challenge jobs like Jason's are. We depend on people like Jason for our safety, but that comes at a tremendous cost to these brave men and women. Jason knows what it feels like to walk through literal fires to save a life, and what that can do to a person, but he also knows a source of hope that makes that can transform that pain into purpose. Jason sits down with Davey to share a bit of his story and how he's made it his mission to help others see God in the midst of their trials.
