In this episode of The Twelfth House, we're exploring our concept of Void States and how running experiments can help you break free from feeling stuck, uninspired, or overwhelmed.There are three different void states that we might experience when wondering "what the hell should I do next?":* The Uninspired State: Where you don't know enough about yourself or the world to know what you want to do next. This state can benefit from tools like subconscious audits, meaning-making systems like astrology and human design, and shadow work.* The Burnt Out and Overwhelmed State: When you've put in effort but aren't getting recognition or satisfaction in return, leading to burnout and a lack of clarity on next steps.* The Overwhelmed By Possibility State: When you have too many options and ideas but don't know where to start, experiencing analysis paralysis and fear of making the wrong choice.These void states are natural parts of life's cycles — we'll all go through all of them many times throughout our lives. But that doesn't make a Void State, like, a super fun time. Anyway, running experiments in your life or business — essentially creating pattern interruptions that introduce new stimuli and change the way you experience your environment — can absolutely be a tool to getting you unstuck if you're having a hard time getting out of a void state. Experiments aren't about success or failure, but about introducing new information into your system to help you get unstuck and see the world differently.Signs you're ready for an experiment:* Feeling bored/stuck/overwhelmed * The outcomes you're getting feel like a season of Real Housewives that should've ended three episodes ago* You catch yourself saying "I should..." more than "I want..." Dr. Laura digs deeper into the subject of toxic bosses in this episode, discussing how to identify a potentially toxic boss before you start working for one. Toxic bosses are unfortunately prevalent, with a 2023 survey finding that 87% of professionals have had at least one toxic boss in their careers. But there are warning signs, and Dr. Laura lists some, highlighting what to look for and how to get the answers we need before joining a toxic workplace.One of the key ways to investigate a boss before working for them is through mutual connections, especially on LinkedIn. Dr. Laura explains the value of maintaining connections and how to broach the subject of a boss with former or current employees. She breaks down how to decipher the answers we receive, identifying the warning signs of a toxic boss. What is being said? What isn't being said? There are things to look for in the interview, as well. The boss isn't just interviewing us, we're interviewing them! Dr. Laura names some warning behaviors that can be seen even in those initial conversations. Not every boss will be toxic and not every challenging workplace has a toxic boss leading it, but this episode gives sound insight into spotting the red flags of a toxic boss before we sign up to work with them. “Are people burnt out? Asking those questions can go a long way. And if you hear the answer is yes, it is a demanding place and people are exhausted and burnt out, that's somewhere that you don't want to be. That doesn't mean you don't want to be in a challenging, invigorating, busy workplace. And of course, there'll be periods where you're going to be working hard. But is it a constant strain? Is it under-resourced? And [are] people expected to be on call 24/7? In order to nurture myself in this season of burnout, I am making some intentional shifts in where I am focusing and spending my energy on. One of them being the podcast, so going forward the podcast will be releasing every other week for the next few months. According to Galatians 6:2, we're called to carry each other's burdens, but sometimes, it can get out of balance, which can lead to uncertainty in our relationships. In our latest episode, we interview Erin Loos Cutraro, the founder and CEO of She Should Run, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging women to run for office - it's so needed! Did you know that women still hold less than 30% of all elected offices across the federal, state, and local level, and the numbers are even lower when looking at women from underrepresented communities? Black women comprise less than 6% of officeholders in Congress, statewide elective executive offices, and state legislatures; only 7.9% of all women state legislators identify as Latina; and, roughly 0.23 percent of U.S elected officials identify as LGBTQIA+. Women are still less likely than men to have thought about running for office or to express interest in running for office in the future. Women are less likely to have opted into leadership roles from a young age. In fact, few of us– less than 2%– grow up with the dream to run for office one day.
