He served 10 years at SEAL Teams with SEAL Team Five, deploying to Iraq and the United Arab Emirates, after which he helped develop the Combatives Instructor Course to train SEALs how to lead training for their own platoons. He spent time in Denmark training Danish Frogmen, and shortly after launched his own swimwear line with 2-time ESPY award-winning adaptive athlete Kyle Maynard called Sunga Life. He even spent time working with friend of the show (and former #156 guest) Rudy Reyes over at Force Blue, developing a community of veterans to help aid in the protection of our planet's marine resources.  Since then, he's been busy - he appeared on Mike Tyson's podcast, worked with Jake Paul in his Boxing Bullies initiative, and even appeared on a South Korean game show (yes, really) called 'Iron Squad 3.' So what's it like spinning up an athletic apparel company after serving in SEAL teams? How did Jeff (and his fellow Special Forces crew) fare against the best of the best in South Korea? And most importantly - who's going to win that Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson fight in November?  ---------- Support Jeff Gum -  Website - https://www.sungalife.com/ IG - https://www.instagram.com/jeffgum/?hl=en ---------- Sponsors:  Beam Take advantage of Beam's biggest sale of the year and get up to 40% off for a limited time when you go to https://www.shopbeam.com/MIKEDROP and use promo code MIKEDROP at checkout! ---------- Lumen Head to https://www.lumen.me/MIKEDROP for 15% off your purchase! ---------- Fueled by TeamDog | www.mikeritlandco.com | @Teamdog.pet ALL THINGS MIKE RITLAND: SHOP for Fueled By Team Dog Performance Dog Food, Treats, Apparel, Accessories, and Protection dogs - MikeRitlandCo.com - https://www.MikeRitlandCo.com Team Dog Online dog training - TeamDog.pet - https://www.TeamDog.pet Learn more about your ad choices. (3:25) • I can't just go and have a normal job. I need the biggest challenge in order to be fulfilled. What's the hardest thing I could do? And I became obsessed with hell week. I almost wanted to do hell week more than be a SEAL (16:55) • I told everyone I wanted to be a SEAL, and then, a year and a half later, 9-11 happened and it just reaffirmed it 100-fold. I don't want to go be a Navy SEAL to do hell week, and learn how to skydive and scuba dive, and blow stuff up and shoot guns, all these really bad-ass things. I wanted to do it to hunt the most evil people in the word, and make sure 9-11 never happens again. (17:33) • I will never, ever quit. (34:43) • [Kyle Maynard –has no arms or legs - and I] start talking. We become friends. We start hanging out a lot. I start bringing him in to speak to my students and motivate them. We traveled around the world together. I took him diving at the Great Barrier Reef, climbed the highest mountain in Australia and went to 20-plus countries with him. (70:07) • I was having major [back] issues. Even trying to do basic workouts it would pop and go out on me. I went to Columbia to the bio accelerator, and they did stem cells in my spine. I'm like a new person after that. (74:40) • I swam Alcatraz, and swam it in one of my Sungas. That was the coldest swim I've done. (94:55) • I'm a board member for the Adaptive Training Foundation in Dallas, helping with athletes. After 9 weeks of training - spiritual, mental, physical. Literally, they perform miracles there.  They've been 20-30 years and haven't walked, and at the end of 9 weeks they're walking. (97:06) • I never felt so much love and gratitude for everyone who's been in my life. Of all the people I could've been born to and I was born to my mom. All the siblings I could've had, and I had my sister and my brother. It was hard to think of my dad and brother without being sad because I miss them so much, but it made be so unbelievably grateful for the time I had with them. (102:10)

Jeff Gum grew up in a small town located in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsyvania.  He had an idyllic childhood, living on a 100 acre dairy farm. At 8 years old, Jeff's world was shattered when his father was killed in a traffic accident.  Immediately Jeff assumed the role of protector for his sister, brother, and mother. At 16 with an injured ACL, Jeff discovered the Navy SEALS.  He was laser focused on becoming a SEAL.  Jeff was only a senior in high school on September 11, 2001, but that day reinforced 100 fold his determination to become a SEAL. Jeff's road to accomplishing his goal was a hard one.  As part of class 270, Jeff was about to begin hell week when he became extremely ill with gastroenteritis.  Through sheer determination, Jeff refused to quit, but his body would not cooperate.   Jeff had not failed once during BUDS, until his illness.  Jeff developed rhabdomyolysis, a serious blood disorder. Jeff was forced to take two weeks of leave to heal and relax.   Jeff came back stronger, feeling like Superman.  He graduated with the class of 272, assigned to SEAL Team 5 and later as instructor for SEAL trainees. Jeff served two deployments, one in Iraq, and the second with a crises management team throughout Europe. It was during the second deployment Jeff injured his back and required spine surgery.  After several reinjuries, he made the decision to leave the Navy SEALS after 10 years of service. Jeff refocused his energy and goals.  Jeff earned his masters and founded the popular swim line, Sunga Life.  You can visit Jeff's website and visit sunga.life on Instagram. Destinies are determined and legends are forged in the lightning round, or at least they could be if it were not merely the pretext for his trolling. Someone should translate "I'm not saying, I'm just saying" into Latin so he can make it his family credo. We puzzle over the practices and intentions of game designers this week as though we were archaeologists trying to divine the practices of ashen Pompeiians. Why did these authors insert this mechanism into their artifact? Was it a mating ritual? Was it an obeisance to some vengeful, long-dead god? Was it to shoehorn in player interaction? Or was it to placate a Kickstarter audience? Oh, sorry, that one is redundant with the obeisance to a god thing. What is the Sunga Life? It is a fun patriotic brand of swimwear and gear that can only be brought to the States by a veteran Navy SEAL.   Jeff Gum served ten years as a SEAL operator and when he moved on to the civilian life, he traveled the world and had a vision of bringing the sunga life to the U.S.  Listen in as Jeff tells his story of deploying overseas and then his pursuit of entrepreneurship.  Part of the company motto “Showcasing the Red, White, and Blue is always a priority with our gear. We like to say, If you're going to Peacock, do it like a Patriot!  Jeff, and other SEALS, will be swimming the Hudson this August to help military veterans.  Find out more, including ways to donate, here.. https://gigo.org/hudson-river-swim/index.html https://www.sungalife.com/ Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprotectors)

I’ve known Andrew for many years, and he has always been a silent warrior. Someone who is constantly trying to push his limits, but not for show, rather, for self-growth. He sees through challenges, and honors the journey, and the struggle not as defeat, but as improvement. Andrew is soft-spoken, but his words pack the punch needed. His actions speak louder than his words, and I urge you to go check out what he has done with H4H – I think you will be inspired.Support the show (https://www.milestonemind.com/donation)

This week I briefly reflect on my podcast journey, so far. I'm always searching to understand better 'us.' I was recently asked: how did I recover so quickly from being stabbed in the heart by a passerby in Boston one-night in 2005, and what might I be able to impart onto people that could help them in their lives? Truth be told, I'm still trying to understand the correct personal insight I can give to people from that story outside of the cliche responses. To help on my journey - to help me answer my own questions first, and then to be able to share those answers with others publicly, we launched our podcast - Milestone Mind - with 3-simple questions in mind, posing them to people that we felt could help shed light onto them.Support the show (https://www.milestonemind.com/donation)

I am so pumped for today's episode. It's the first time we interview two performers at the same time, and I couldn't think of two people who would be better to chat with. Kyle Maynard and Jeff Gum are best friends. They travel the world together and have a cool attire company called Loud Mouth Patriot.  Kyle is a motivational speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and ESPY award-winning mixed martial arts athlete, known for becoming the first quadruple amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Aconcagua without the aid of prosthetics. Jeff Gum had a ten-year career with Naval Special Warfare where he was a proven leader, mentor, and instructor focused on teamwork, innovation, and strategic planning within the NSW Community. To be blunt, Kyle and Jeff are both awe-inspiring, friendly, thoughtful, bad-asses, who I am so excited to share with you.  In this conversation, we talk about mantras, breathing techniques, and all of the different ways that Jeff and Kyle set their mind to perform tough tasks. You are going to love their friendship and their perspective on the world. Make sure to follow Jeff on Instagram (@JeffGum) and Kyle on Instagram (@KyleMaynard) and Twitter (@KyleMaynard) and you can also check out his website: www.kyle-maynard.com. Thanks to both of them for coming on and please make sure to share this episode with friends/family and your social media! Talk soon, Brian
