On this episode of Ducks Unlimited podcast, host Katie Burke interviews Master Carver Jerry Talton. In this interview, Talton talks about how he got interested in carving decoys and shares his experience of growing up in the outdoors and his introduction to hunting and fishing. Growing up in North Carolina, he was initially interested in surfing and even carved his own surfboards. He explains how after coming across a decoy he eventually gifted to his brother, he began to become increasingly interested in how decoys were carved and began to carve them himself. Talton further explains the story of his first duck hunt, where he shot a green-winged teal, which he claims to be God's favorite duck to shoot and eat, as it tastes the best.Instagram: @jerrytaltondecoyswww.ducks.org/DUPodcast

S1E34: On this episode, Healthcare Workforce Staffing Transparency with Sheila Talton CEO of Greymatter Analytics and host Dr. Nick. Staffing of healthcare has grown alongside the oft-shared measure of the percentage of GDP that we spend on healthcare. In fact, those two metrics are closely aligned as staffing constitutes a big proportion of the expenditure for any healthcare facility. Basic math on employees in healthcare at the country level suggest that physicians make up about 5% of the healthcare workforce, nurses about 10% - what goes to make up the remaining 85%? We need to move on from discussions and start with action, actions that increase transparency allowing everyone to understand the healthcare system. Your better pill to swallow is to assess your staffing levels and gather the data to classify your staff into clinical and non-clinical and consider publishing these data. According to a 2020 report by MarketWatch, only 3.7% of Google workers were Black, less than 4% at Facebook, and 7.5% at Uber. The primary argument behind this heartbreaking statistic is the notion among corporate executives that finding capable Black talent is a challenge. It's not clear whether they even looked at all, they didn't know where to look, or that they didn't look hard enough. All we know is that some things need to change. Furthermore, when it comes to promoting Black leaders, the process is often reactive and not intentional. For example, the Black Lives Matter movement left shareholders rushing to promote long-serving Black employees based primarily on societal pressure. Unfortunately, this approach often causes problems when society demands a sense of urgency and the organization settles for an unqualified candidate. Yes, Black talent matters, but it should be the right talent at the right time and for the right reasons. Today's show is a bit different than normal! Tim Maratta takes over as host and sits across lifetime and high school friend Rob Talton. Rob shares with us his journey beating Cancer and how he battled a rare disease of the central nervous system, Neurosarcoidosis. Talton was privileged to encounter Johns Hopkins' Dr. Howard Philip Levy, M.D., Ph.D. on his health journey. Dr. Levy has worked alongside many notable doctors including Dr. Ben Carson. Levy was pivotal in Rob's recovery by putting hope at the forefront of his mindset. Doc wouldn't allow Talton to focus on survival percentages or any other news that would lend towards negative overthinking. Rob is not only in remission, but he is determined to make the latter half of his life more meaningful. He encourages us to be more grateful and present by not just living, but by being alive! Rob is a member of the Talton Brothers Band and writes music based on his personal experiences. Talton was blessed with the opportunity to play music at the popular music studio, Muscle Shoals, where icons including Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and the Rolling Stones produced music. There were many dark days in Rob's healing process, but he overcame to tell many exceptional stories. We get a glimpse of those stories right here on Write it Down! Sheila Talton is the Founder and CEO of Gray Matter Analytics, a healthcare-focused company that offers analytics as a service (AaaS) to healthcare systems and insurers to help them manage their quality measures, metrics, and risks related to value-based care. To be the best provider of care requires the ability to measure, predict and improve services based on medical and behavioral data, combined with social determinants of health, to ensure that all data is leveraged to provide better outcomes. Sheila says, "Whether those metrics are tied to the admissions or length of stay and other components of the clinical treatments, most health systems are actually managing how well they're performing on Excel spreadsheets. As you can imagine, you cannot manage multiple risk-based contracts because the average provider will have at least 20, 30, sometimes even 50 different contracts with different metrics." @GrayMatterData #DigitalHealth #SocialDeterminantsofHealth #SDOH #AaaS #ValueBasedCare #WholePersonCare GrayMatterAnalytics.com Download the transcript here

Potential to Powerhouse: Success Secrets for Women Entrepreneurs
Today, we are speaking with a digital transformation and analytics powerhouse, Sheila Talton. Sheila owns Gray Matter Analytics, a healthcare data analytics company founded in 2013. She is here to share with us her perspective on important topics such as the lack of women in the big data and big tech industry, raising working capital in a business, and what it means to be an entrepreneur. As an African American woman, Sheila is an ardent advocate for African American rights. She currently serves on three public boards, two of which are John Deere and Cisco. Finally, Sheila is a thoughtful leader who attributes much of her success to her daily workouts and ensuring stillness in her day by taking time to read the Bible. IN THIS EPISODE: [03:37] Sheila reflects on her childhood, labeling herself as a rule follower until she realized she wasn't accomplishing as much as she wanted to quickly enough. [05:44] Marching and demonstrating in protests, making sure her voice was heard around important issues facing African Americans. [08:52] The point when Sheila knew she wanted to pursue a career in technology. [16:57] Not getting the support of her then husband as Sheila's career started to grow exponentially. [19:16] Sheila's next steps as she transitioned and pivoted her focus to becoming an entrepreneur. [21:18] How Sheila negotiated and structured the deal to get her business started. [27:59] Hindsight of Sheila's career, she spent 50% as an entrepreneur and 50% in corporate America. Does she feel the time she spent in corporate was beneficial? [30:31] Sheila speaks about her current company and what she expects the future of this company to look like. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Sheila marched and demonstrated during the civil rights movement to ensure her voice was heard regarding the different issues facing African Americans during that time. How Sheila found success in Big tech and Big Data, even though the odds were stacked against her, being a woman and a woman of color. Working in corporate America before she became an entrepreneur - Sheila felt this was beneficial to her because she was able to observe what good and bad management looked like. We can never achieve success alone, having a support system is necessary to finding success. Negotiating the deal and investment for her business - Sheila looks back to that moment and knows she took all the right steps in formulating that deal. QUOTES: “I spent a lot of my time marching, demonstrating, and making sure that my voice was heard around the issues that were important for African-Americans during that time.” - Sheila Talton “I feel that I learned what good management looks like and what bad management looks like. A lot of times entrepreneurs have to figure that out themselves because they don't have role models.” - Sheila Talton on working in corporate America “I believe that none of us get to where we are alone. A support system is really important, a support system of women and a support system of men.” - Sheila Talton CONNECT WITH US: Find Sheila Talton on LinkedIn and at GrayMatterAnalytics.com Check out our website, Potential to Powerhouse, for more details and to learn about past, present, and future guests. Today we explore the story of a track athlete from high school, to multiple colleges, and now with the Olympic Dream in his heart. Nigel is a post-collegiate runner aiming for the Olympic Trials in 2021 training in Atlanta, Ga. with famed athlete/coach Dwight Phillips. We talk about what it takes to make it as a post-collegiate from facilities, to coaches, and the monetary costs. One of the ways he pays for his training is with the Atlanta Braves as a member of the grounds crew, where through luck and determination he found himself as The Freeze. In This Land of Plenty: Mickey Leland and Africa in American Politics (University of Pennsylvania Press) by Benjamin Talton is a transnational history that explores the influence of African American leaders on US foreign policy towards Africa in the 1980s. By examining the life and labors of the political activist turned Texas congressman, Mickey Leland, Talton traces the afterlives of 1960s-era Black radicalism in the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) after Leland’s election in 1978. Leland shaped the CBC’s outlook on famine in Ethiopia and established the Committee on Hunger where he developed a broad transformative vision for ending world hunger. Talton analyzes Leland’s career alongside contemporaneous political developments in Ethiopia and apartheid South Africa, an issue which ultimately became the focal point of CBC endeavors. Talton investigates the ways that anti-apartheid limited Black Congressional action on other African-related foreign policy issues throughout the decade. Talton paints a portrait of Leland as an activist, statesman, and visionary who lived out his politics of humanitarian solidarity from Houston to Addis Ababa. Benjamin Talton is Professor of History at Temple University. Amanda Joyce Hall is a Ph.D. Candidate in History and African American Studies at Yale University. The Atlanta Braves have the fastest man in baseball. Nigel Talton is one of the most popular celebrities in the state of Georgia and he has been a viral sensation across Major League Baseball since 2017. Nigel is known to Braves fans as “The Freeze” and when he isn't raking the infield dirt or cutting the outfield grass as his full-time Grounds Crew job requires of him, he is sprinting at olympic speed against unsuspecting Braves fans along the team's warning track wall during a designed mid-game in stadium promotion created to captivate the 41,000 fans in attendance at Truist Park. On this podcast, Nigel joins us as our guest to talk about how he became a spandex-wearing wonder and what it was like when the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt said, “The Freeze is too quick for me”…Nigel is one of the nicest guys you will meet and his story is inspiring! We spent time with him at a Braves game a few years ago. Enjoy this interview and be sure to catch a Braves game next year so you can see The Freeze live in action!--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/appSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thebrothersbrandt/support

We're using "culture" pretty broadly, here--the SVWAG staff anthropologist is out with the flu, so there's only so much we can do. We're ready to accept some degree of cultural variance, but we don't endorse cultural relativism as a moral theory; our staff ethicist is still very much at his post. That said, social gatherings are most definitely susceptible to cultural standards than moral precepts are, and we are ever in thrall to one of SVWAG's primordial maxims: "Read the room." We would like to apologize for the poorer audio quality of this episode. The editor (Mark) would dearly like to attribute it somehow to Walker's illness-induced stupor, but try as he might he can't seem to blame the victim on this one. The microphone has let us all down, dear listeners, and all we can do is vow not to repeat the twin errors--the one being the reduced audio quality, the other in Mark not being able to scapegoat the victim.Games Played Last Week: -Street Masters: Redemption 1m30s (Brady Sadler & Adam Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2018) -Sentinels of the Multiverse 3m35s (Christopher Badell, Paul Bender, & Adam Rebottaro, Greater Than Games, 2011)-SEAL Team Flix 7m34s (Pete Ruth & Mark Thomas, WizKids, 2018)-Mystic Vale 10m57s (John D.
