Learn how to sell more at the end of the year by helping small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) reduce their tax bill while making strategic investments in their company on this Money Monday episode of the Sales Gravy Podcast. If you've been looking for a way to hit or exceed your annual quota, qualify for President's Club, or simply earn a bigger paycheck or bonus, focusing on SMBs in the final weeks of the year might give you the edge you need. SMBs are Motivated to Reduce Taxes In the United States there are millions of SMBs and the vast majority of these businesses are what we call pass-through organizations for tax purposes. This means that the owners or partners in these businesses report the profits on their personal tax filings. Unlike big companies, small companies don't have the luxury of rolling profits over to the next year. So whatever they made this year, they have to pay taxes on. As the calendar winds down SMB business owners are often motivated to invest in products, services, and software solutions in order to reduce taxable income. In other words, if a business has shown strong profits throughout the year, its owners might be keen to spend some of that money on improving their operations, expanding their capabilities, or streamlining their processes—right now—rather than hand over a large chunk of their profits to Uncle Sam come tax season. Business Owners Hate Paying Taxes To understand why this year-end period is so critical, let's get into the mindset of a small or medium-sized business owner. Unlike large enterprises with multiple departments and complex accounting strategies, SMB owners are often personally invested in the company's financial results because those results are essentially their income. It's how they pay their mortgage and put food on the table. For this reason, they watch their revenue and expenses closely. As the year comes to an end, they're looking at their bottom line and thinking about the upcoming tax bill. For many of these business owners, profit is a double-edged sword. Don't get me wrong, they want to make a profit. But at some point, too much profit triggers a much higher tax bill. If there is one thing I know about small and medium sized business owners its that they hate taxes. They are always looking for ways to legally minimize their tax liability. One easy and productive way to do this is to make fully or partially depreciable investments in the business before December 31st. That could mean buying new equipment, software, training packages, or services that will not only improve the business long-term but also reduce taxable income for the current year. An Urgent Need to Spend As a salesperson, the key takeaway here is that your prospects have a natural, time-bound incentive to spend. If you can position your product or service as the right investment at the right time, you might find it easier to close those deals that seemed just out of reach during the rest of the year. And by the way, if you are dealing with decision-makers who are pushing off decisions to next year, this is a great way to get past that objection. Framing Your Business Case I want to be clear though that most businesses are not going to spend money for the sake of spending money. Savvy business owners want to reduce taxes and do the right thing for their company. Therefore, you can't just be transactional. You still must follow the sales process and build a bridge to the value of tax savings AND business improvement when making your business case. It's all about framing your product or service as a strategic investment rather than a mere expense. For example: If you sell software tools that improve operational efficiency, make the case for how your solution will help them save on labor costs, reduce errors, and streamline workflows. If you're selling advertising, highlight how a year-end launch of a new campaign will lead to immediate result...

(Eric Goosby, 00:05:26) Primary Care Integration Why the HIV response must pivot toward integrated primary healthcare to address non-communicable diseases and pandemic preparedness. Quote: "For people living with HIV, coronary artery disease, hypertension, and cancer are now the bigger threats. Primary care is key." (Eric Goosby, 00:07:46) The Geopolitical Impact on HIV Care Rising anti-rights movements and geopolitical challenges make it harder to bring marginalized populations into care. Quote: "The rights-based approach to care is under siege globally, making access for key populations even tougher." The climate crisis is no longer a distant threat but an urgent reality. Pacific Island communities feel the worst effects, even though they produce less than 0.03% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. This unfair situation brings attention to the "loss and damage" concept, highlighting the need to address the economic and non-economic losses these vulnerable regions face that are caused as a result of increased or more frequent disaster, a changing climate and the existential threat that climate change poses on communities, cultures and livelihoods. To gain insight into the critical issue of 'loss and damage,' we spoke with leaders, activists, and experts from across the Pacific who experience these impacts first-hand and advocate for support.

That Solo Life, Episode 273: Being a PR Pro in the Age of Mistrust In this Episode In this episode of That Solo Life, co-hosts Karen Swim, APR and Michelle Kane discuss the pressing issues of declining trust in institutions and how it impacts the practice and perception of the public relations industry. The co-hosts discuss how the lack of trust has allowed for the proliferation of false narratives, making the PR professional's job more difficult and vital than ever. They emphasize the importance of PR professionals in protecting brand reputation, serving as strategic counselors, and being the crafters of the story that companies present to their audiences. The speakers call for the PR industry to do a better job of elevating the value and expertise of PR professionals, who possess crucial institutional knowledge and the ability to navigate the complex trust landscape. Karen and Michelle kick off the episode with a look at the alarming decline in trust across various institutions, as highlighted by the Edelman Trust Barometer. Karen points out that this erosion of trust has led to a fragmented reality where individuals cling to beliefs that align with their perceptions, often disregarding factual information. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the rise of misinformation, which has become rampant in our digital age. The discussion explores how the internet, while a powerful tool for communication, has also created a level playing field for the spread of both truth and falsehoods. PR professionals recognize the critical importance of their role in combating misinformation and maintaining brand trust. The work of PR pros goes beyond simply securing media placements; they are the storytellers who shape how organizations present themselves to the world. However, the hosts acknowledge the challenges faced in educating clients and the public about the true value of public relations. Throughout the episode, Karen and Michielle highlight the necessity of having skilled communicators who can navigate crises and manage brand reputation. We stress that the decisions made today will have long-lasting effects, and without a strong PR strategy, organizations risk losing the trust of their audiences, including their own employees. Karen and Michelle reflect on the unique expertise that comes from years of experience in the field. They advocate for the need to elevate the perception of the PR profession and ensure that our voices are heard. Listeners are encouraged to share their thoughts and questions, and reminded of the vital role they play in shaping narratives and fostering trust in an increasingly complex world. Welcome back to the Multifamily Collective! Today, I'm tuning in from (cloudy!) San Diego, where I'm speaking at the Future Conference. I'll discuss a topic we've championed for years: the critical need to upskill and re-skill the workforce. While en route, I listened to Gigatrends by Thomas Koulopoulos and Nathaniel Palmer, which shed light on seismic workforce shifts. Here are the stats: Over 14% of today's workforce must pivot to new jobs or industries as existing skills become obsolete. And with automation on track to impact 50% of jobs worldwide, 77% of CEOs feel their teams lack the skills to work effectively alongside AI. This challenge—and opportunity—extends to multifamily, where every role, from leasing consultants to property managers, needs an upgrade in digital literacy and an understanding of AI-powered tools. The skill of the future? Learning to prompt and collaborate with AI to drive data-backed decisions in everything from strategy to creativity. Leaders, 2025 is approaching, and the time to prepare is now. If you found this helpful, like it and subscribe for more insights. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Wild Animal Initiative has urgent need for more funding and more donors, published by Cameron Meyer Shorb on August 6, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Our room for more funding is bigger and more urgent than ever before. Our organizational strategy will be responsive both to the total amount raised and to how many people donate, so smaller donors will have an especially high impact this year. Good Ventures recently decided to phase out funding for several areas (GV blog, EA Forum post), including wild animal welfare. That's a pretty big shock to our movement. We don't know what exactly the impact will be, except that it's complicated. The purpose of this post is to share what we know and how we're thinking about things - primarily to encourage people to donate to Wild Animal Initiative this year, but also for anyone else who might be interested in the state of the wild animal welfare movement more broadly. Summary Track record Our primary goal is to support the growth of a self-sustaining interdisciplinary research community focused on reducing wild animal suffering. Wild animal welfare science is still a small field, but we're really happy with the momentum it's been building. Some highlights of the highlights: We generally get a positive response from researchers (particularly in animal behavior science and ecology), who tend to see wild animal welfare as a natural extension of their interest in conservation (unlike EAs, who tend to see those two as conflicting with each other). Wild animal welfare is increasingly becoming a topic of discussion at scientific conferences, and was recently the subject of the keynote presentation at one. Registration for our first online course filled to capacity (50 people) within a few hours, and just as many people joined the waitlist over the next few days. Room for more funding This is the first year in which our primary question is not how much more we can do, but whether we can avoid major budget cuts over the next few years. We raised less in 2023 than we did in 2022, so we need to make up for that gap. We're also going to lose our biggest donor because Good Ventures is requiring Open Philanthropy to phase out their funding for wild animal welfare. Open Phil was responsible for about half of our overall budget. The funding from their last grant to us will last halfway through 2026, but we need to decide soon how we're going to adapt. To avoid putting ourselves back in the position of relying on a single funder, our upcoming budgeting decisions will depend on not only how much money we raise, but also how diversified our funding is. That means gifts from smaller donors will have an unusually large impact. (The less you normally donate, the more disproportionate your impact will be, but the case still applies to basically everyone who isn't a multi-million-dollar foundation.) Specifically, our goal is to raise $240,000 by the end of the year from donors giving $10k or less. Impact of marginal donations We're evaluating whether we need to reduce our budget to a level we can sustain without Open Philanthropy. The more we raise this year - and the more donors who pitch in to make that happen - the less we'll need to cut. Research grants and staff-associated costs make up the vast majority of our budget, so we'd need to make cuts in one or both of those areas. Donations would help us avoid layoffs and keep funding external researchers. What we've accomplished so far Background If you're not familiar with Wild Animal Initiative, we're working to accelerate the growth of wild animal welfare science. We do that through three interconnected programs: We make grants to scientists who take on relevant projects, we conduct our own research on high-priority questions, and we do outreach through conferences and virtual events. Strategy...
We sit down with Roxanne Becker, a lifestyle medicine physician, to discuss the urgent implications of the first human case of H5N1 avian influenza contracted from a dairy cow.
