The doctor is in, please take a seat. We're joined in person by hilarious and universally beloved friend of the show, the wickedly talented vocalist/guitarist of PITY SEX: Dr. Britty Drake. We go into great detail about Britty's expulsion from high school due to a (joke) violent threat on Myspace and the extensive aftermath, her upbringing from young Christian Metalcore fan experimenting with many haircuts in Lansing, MI to Indie Shoegaze pioneer extensively touring the country, taking a break from music to become a literal DOCTOR of the mind, balancing work and home life with her husband/bandmate Mike, playing live with Pity Sex in 2025 & beyond and much, much, more!A truly delightful episode with our great friend that we had as much fun recording as we did watching it back. Pity Sex is here to stay, baby! We proudly present our first ever comedian on HardLore, in person in Los Angeles: The great (almost legendary) Shapel Lacey! Lifelong hardcore punk listener, former cheerleading champion, and comedian on the rapid rise who proudly flies the flag for hardcore music every single time he hits the stage. We learn all about Shapel's origin from being a young Mesa, AZ hardcore kid at the Nile Underground discovering the wonders of Black Flag, to University of Louisville cheerleader trying comedy on a whim at an open mic night, touring with Bert Kreischer on a bus and then headlining rooms on his own, all the way to his finding his latest love of modern hardcore in 2020 and beyond.Shapel rules and we had an incredible time getting to know him in real time as this episode progressed, and we think you'll all enjoy it just as much as we did.HardLore: A Knotfest Series Edited by Steven Grise (@iamoneonenineseven)Title sequence by Nicholas Marzluf (@marzluf)Join the HARDLORE PATREON to watch every single weekly episode early and ad-free, alongside exclusive monthly episodes: https://patreon.com/hardlorepodJoin the HARDLORE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/jA9rppggef Cool links:HardLore Official Website/HardLore Records store: https://hardlorepod.comGet your FREE glasses or sunglasses if you're in a touring band or work with one from SIGHT FOR SOUND: https://sightforsound.comGet 15% off MADD VINTAGE with code HARDLORE15! https://maddvintage.com/ FOLLOW SHAPEL:INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/shapellacey/ FOLLOW HARDLORE:INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/hardlorepod/TWITTER | https://twitter.com/hardlorepodSPOTIFY | https://spoti.fi/3J1GIrpAPPLE | https://apple.co/3IKBss2 FOLLOW COLIN:INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/colinyovng/TWITTER | https://www.twitter.com/ColinYovng FOLLOW BO:INSTAGRAM | https://www.instagram.com/bosxe/TWITTER | https://www.twitter.com/bosxe 00:00:00 - Hello Welcome00:00:57 - Introduction / Mills Vintage00:01:58 - Music or Comedy First?00:04:54 - Guitar/Bass00:06:46 - Black Flag00:09:58 - The Nile00:10:48 - Formative Local Hardcore Shows00:13:53 - Sight for Sound00:15:41 - Cheerleading00:17:32 - Henry Rollins and Stand up00:19:10 - DS-13 / That Weird Swedish Kazaa00:24:42 - The first open mic night...00:33:26 - First Stand Up Out of State00:42:06 - Ditching Cheer Practice00:45:09 - Comedians, Wrestlers and Bands00:50:51 - Bombing00:56:27 - Going Underground Recordss01:00:24 - Do You Feel like You've made It?01:01:17 - Shapel's Biggest Headline Set01:04:03 - Favorite Set of All Time01:05:44 - Walk Out Music01:07:06 - Top 4 Comedians01:13:12 - Parasocial Relationships01:16:20 - Reading Comments01:21:47 - Finding Top 4 Records01:30:23 - Favorite Tour01:33:21 - Life on the Road01:34:54 - Eatin' Good01:41:25 - Mad Peaceful #HARDLORE #HARDCORE

It's your chance to hear some of the great album rock from the 60s and 70s mostly. We've been doing these programs since late 2019 and have covered lots a ground. You know and I know that we've just scratched the surface of recorded rock, so the new shows keep coming. The reruns aren't bad either. Today we're going to say thanks and farewell to Marianne Faithfull, Jesse Colin Young of the Youngbloods and vibraphonist Roy Ayers Jr. The music under me is Roy Ayres with Herbie Mann at the 1969 Harlem summer of soul extravaganza with a song cowritten by Isaac Hayes. Those three have entered the room next door, as Henry Diltz coined the phrase. You also get some of the blues with Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, together. So these are the stories that songwriters and artists want to convey to you. These are the Tales Vinyl Tells. I want to say thank you to all the financial supporters of Tales Vinyl Tells. Whether a small amount monthly or a very generous donation, each of you listeners are very appreciated and if you can and do give monthly, my deepest gratitude goes to you. Jesse Colin Young is a revered figure in the American folk-rock scene. In The Youngbloods, which blended folk, rock, blues, and jazz elements, widespread acclaim came from their iconic 1967 hit single, "Get Together," a song that became an anthem for peace and brotherhood during the turbulent 1960s. The song's enduring message of unity and love continues to resonate with audiences today, cementing the band's legacy in American music history. But beyond his success with The Youngbloods, Jesse Colin Young has enjoyed a prolific solo career, releasing numerous albums that showcase his versatility as an artist. One of his notable solo works is the album "The Perfect Stranger," originally released in 1982. This album, celebrated for its introspective lyrics and rich musical arrangements, was recently re-released, offering both longtime fans and new listeners the opportunity to experience its timeless appeal. "The Perfect Stranger" highlights Jesse's ability to traverse musical genres with ease, and also showcases duets with legends such as Michael McDonald and Carly Simon. Throughout his career, Jesse Colin Young has also remained a passionate advocate for environmental and social causes, using his music as a platform for change. His contributions to the music industry and his commitment to activism have left an indelible mark, making him a true legend in the world of folk-rock. Enjoying the show? In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, host Scott Dudelson engages an in-depth conversation with Jesse Colin Young, co-founder and lead singer of the legendary band, the Youngbloods. During this special episode, Young reflects on his riveting six-decade-long career, from the timeless anthems of the Youngbloods to his impactful solo journey. As we dive deep into Young's career, he shares his enduring bond with the songs he penned during the inspiring '70s singer-songwriter movement and reflects on his experiences recording in solitude, battling stage fright and recording iconic songs. Young shares tales from the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 1960's and details an open mic event where he encounters Buzzy Linhart singing 'Get Together' - a song that would change his life and become one of the most important songs of the 1960's. We talk about the recording of "Soul of a City Boy' in one take - Young's first album in 1964, as well as reflections on the studio sessions with Felix Pappalardi on the first Youngbloods album (which featured "Get Together") Young shares anecdotes from his San Francisco days, his move to the countryside, engagement with the SF psychedelic scene, the creation process behind the acclaimed album, ‘Elephant Mountain', his connection with Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin (who covered Young's song "Darkness, Darkness") and the recent digital release of his solo catalog including "Perfect Stranger" a solo album recorded in 1982 and just released digitally for the first time. On June 28th, 2023, every band's worst nightmare became reality for our good friends in Year of the Knife - they were involved in a horrific van accident while on tour, which put the band on hiatus and ultimately lead to vocalist MADISON WATKINS being in in critical condition, suffering major physical trauma, experiencing over a month of memory loss and fracturing nearly every bone in her body. After months and months of uncertainty, impossibly hard work on her end, triumph of her indomitable and incomparable human spirit, and endless support from her husband Brandon, her family, her doctors, the hardcore community and beyond. We are so grateful to say, our very good friend Madison Watkins is finally here as our very special guest. Enjoy these two hours of triumph and insight into one of the strongest people we know. HardLore is joined this week for an unbelievable and unfiltered conversation with Parris Mayhew, currently of AGGROS, but formerly the co-founder/original co-writer of legendary New York Hardcore band, the CRO-MAGS. The Cro-Mags are inarguably one of the most influential and important hardcore bands of all time, and the sheer insanity and legend of the internal twists and turns within the band itself is the only thing that rivals the magnitude of their contributions to hardcore music. 10 years after his iconic interview with Rod Glacial that first appeared on Noisey (after he thought it was only supposed to be in a French magazine), we go over some key details from the interview and from the story of Parris' time in the Cro-Mags for some of the most riveting and controversial stories ever told on HardLore, and he shares all the facts about his new band Aggros. When hard bands go soft... Today on HardLore we explore our favorite "soft" songs played by bands that are normally much harder. Not every ballad is soft and not every soft song is a ballad. We're here to fill the gaps and educate the HardLore listeners by expanding their musical palette, because we all know that the hardest thing a band can truly do is sing about their feelings or take a sonic risk. Thumbnail photo by Reid Haithcock. Colin and Bo talked to Nate Newton from Converge, Cave In, Doomriders and MUCH MORE in-person in Manchester, UK, and as stated in the intro, Nate is true legend both personally and creatively in hardcore/punk, a pioneer at juggling multiple incredible bands and expertly filling multiple rolls in all of them and we can't wait to have him back on. We talk Converge's thoughts on Jane Doe when they finished the album, joining the band without knowing any of the songs, his first musical endeavors, causing a literal riot in 2002 and more. Converge is and has always been in a league of their own, as a band and as people. Thanks Nate for coming on and the band for rocking so hard. THE MIKE GORMLEY SHOW - Mike Gormley is back with an incredible interview with music legend Jessie Colin Young! Jesse Colin Young has been a pioneer of American roots music for more than half a century. He has left a unique mark on the intersecting worlds of folk, blues, jazz, country, and rock & roll. As the frontman of the Youngbloods, he immortalized the ideals of the Woodstock generation with "Get Together," an international hit that called for peace and brotherhood during the turbulent 1960s. During the decades that followed, Young expanded both his audience and his artistic range, releasing a string of solo albums that mixed socially conscious lyrics with top-tier guitar skills and gorgeous vocals. An acclaimed songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, producer, label owner, podcast host, and longtime social/environmental activist, he has established a permanent place in America's musical landscape, while continuing to make modern music that's every bit as vital as his work during the counterculture era. The GRAMMY Museum is thrilled to welcome Jesse Colin Young to the Museum's intimate 200-seat Clive Davis Theater for an evening including a special screening of his film, Ridgetop, and a conversation about his album, Song for Juli, with a performance to follow. SONG FOR JULI 50th Anniversary Release To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Jesse Colin Young has released a fully remastered version of his iconic album, "Song for Juli," originally launched on September 4, 1973. The all-new version is available on all streaming platforms as well as extremely limited-edition vinyl. This album is the fourth solo album by singer-songwriter and former Youngblood. The album had a higher chart placing than any of the Youngblood albums and stayed on the charts longer than any other album he currently created. Several of the songs include stories about Young's Ridgetop home in Northern California. The house burned down in 1995 by the Mount Vision Fires. https://www.jessecolinyoung.com The Mike Gormley Show Host | Mike Gormley Executive Producer | Jeremiah D.
