This week Dana and Def welcome back two of our favourite Australian content creators: Thinker Themer. Amy and Maggie fill us in on what they've been up to since they were last on the show, share how their tastes have evolved, and also their views on the changing landscape of boardgmaing over the past few years. There's also the Question of the Pod, Swear an Oath, and all of the usual shenanigans you've come to expect from the Board Game BBQ Podcast. The city of Kethrys (also known as Cloudspire) yields little of value for the Imperium, but what little may be produced is promptly sent away so the inhabitants of the city must fend for themselves. The settlement around the spire's base is surrounded by children, and the older they are the more they may have to do to survive. Cities like this bode well for Line Bulls who are always looking for Side Jobs, as the lack of Imperial investment means someone always needs something done. Andrel meets royalty. Pippin lies to cops. Drix draws a crowd. Ghost Lines by John Harper. Music by Sebastian Black. Art by Yoshiko Agresta. "Gemelli's Wonder Wheels" lyrics by Stefen feat. The city of Kethrys, Imperial designation Cloudspire, is a scabbed over wound left on Iruvia from the Imperium's bolder days. Before the costly Unity War with Skovlan, it was the Immortal Emperor's belief that even sovereign Iruvia would eventually bend to his might as humanity's steward. An entire generation were worked into their graves, killed by Imperial Agents, or sent to die in the decades-long civil war; leaving behind the shell of a city populated by the children they left behind. Andrel is offered an out. Pippin gets to keep ignoring things. Drix sees some rats. If no one has won in the previous step, only players who have the most of a single type of figure can win. All other players are eliminated. The remaining players set aside the figures they have of which they have the most of a certain type. The player with the most remaining figures wins. Today, we are continuing our series of exploring the design decisions behind our own games! Emma and Scott sit down with Gil to talk about his game High Rise; about how it started life as an auction game, and the twisty route it took to publication. SHOW NOTES 1m23s - Gil discussed the Wag auction in his Networks design diary on BGG. 2m45s - Gil's game Battle Merchants. 3m31s - A "MacGuffin" is an object in a film that the characters all want, but the actual nature of the object is irrelevant (like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction). All that matters from the perspective of the film is that the characters want it. Looney Labs has since published an actual game with this term, Get the MacGuffin. 4m03s - Gil's game The Networks. 6m24s - Games with auctions as an element in the game: Princes of Florence, Goa 6m54s - Knizia games that are built entirely around their auctions: Ra, Modern Art, Medici, High Society 8m18s - The digital board game Sumer (Gil credited Josh Raab with the game design, but neglected to mention co-designers Geoffrey Suthers, Misha Favorov, and Sig Gunnarsson). 8m51s - The legendary video game M.U.L.E. - not a commercial success, but since regarded as seminal and influential. For a while, "M.U.L.E. as a board game" was a game designer's grail, but that's since been handled by board games Wealth of Nations, Planet Steam, and of course, M.U.L.E. The Board Game. 14m41s - Gil is talking about Roger Caillois, and his book Man, Play, and Games. Play is usually associated with having no real-world implications, but Caillois knew to draw in gambling as a counter-example. 19m04s - High Rise's look would not have nearly been so amazing without the graphic design of Heiko Günther and the illustrations of Kwanchai Moriya. 20m36s - Rocco is also designer of the game Ninja Dice. 23m04s - You can follow the High Rise Kickstarter here; it goes live on October 6. 24m54s - Bryn Smith runs Doomsday Robots, a board game publishing company. 27m02s - Expancity, Manhattan. The Manhattan kaiju "expansion" Gil was thinking of turned out to be a variant designed by Brian Bankler and Eric Moore. 27m56s - The amazing Daniel Newman, who is quite an excellent game designer himself (he made Dead Man's Cabal), and who is designing the High Rise plastic buildings. 28m11s - Not to mention, Elastoplast is a brand of bandages. 28m59s - The High Rise design diary. 30m28s - Gil's online playtest group, Remote Playtesting. 32m24s - Two rondel games, both by Mac Gerdts: Navegador, and Imperial. 33m57s - Time track games similar to High Rise: Tokaido, Glen More, Francis Drake, and Kraftwagen. 34m28s - Ryan Courtney, designer of Pipeline 36m29s - Eric Lang's tweet about turn angst. You can hear more directly from Eric in Ludology 175 - Auld Lang Design. 38m33s - Food Chain Magnate. 45m33s - Geoff and Gil discussed ludonarrative dissonance in Ludology 190 - Diabolus in Ludica. A positive example of ludonarrative dissonance: Unspeakable Words. 46m55s - Cloudspire. 50m28s - Emma is referring to Ludology 209 - The 6 Zones of Play. 51m51s - Bohnanza 51m58s - Here's an example of Magic Card flicking. It's even worse when the cards are sleeved. 55m36s - Uno, The Mystery Rummy series of games. 59m33s - The Sears Tower in Chicago is now called the Willis Tower. 1h02m57s - The preview page for the High Rise Kickstarter campaign.

In this episode Steve is joined by Conor and Sarah and the team discuss some great techniques to get family and friends in board games who might be averse to trying new things. The team share their experiences of getting games to the table with people who aren't familiar with modern board gaming. So if you ever see Steve shuffling cards in your peripheral... In our Sizzling Games this week Conor enters the world of Portuguese wine in Vinhos, Sarah remains in control in... err, Ctrl, and Steve gets up to all kinds of shenanigans in Don't Get Got. In our Board Game Bracket segment we settle our last listener-voted bracket; 7th Continent vs Seasons; and then set-up the next battle; On Mars vs Eclipse. And we have a special guest phone in to defend his On Mars nomination against Sarah's Eclipse argument. Both space-themed games sound excellent so expect this to be a close battle. Make sure you vote on our socials to make sure your favourite goes through to Round 2. While the team are still reeling from the Nemesis: Lockdown pledge manager (#nemesisbackerwallet), Sarah tells us about a really beautiful Japanese game; Izayoi; currently on Kickstarter. Meanwhile, Conor is keeping an eye out for the postman for his Super Fantasy Brawl and Cloudspire deliveries. Finally in Swear An Oath, Conor channeled Sir Richard Attenborough in Dinosaur Island, Sarah pleased the Gods by playing Teotihuacan: City of Gods, and Steve got his cogs turning in Tzolk'in. The team then swear new oaths by committing to playing Era: Medieval Age (Conor), Res Arcana (Sarah) and Tiny Epic Kingdoms (Steve). There are days when I am convinced of the magical nature of our podcast. Today is one of those days. Somehow we have managed to squeeze three very big games into what amounts just the same length of podcast. From a physics standpoint this is clearly impossible - and let’s face it - telling you how we do it would be giving away a very big industry secret. But by Jove, I think we've got it. Age of Steam: ( 04:35 ) - In theory, reprints of classic games are incredibly exciting because here’s a chance for people to rediscover something that was clearly good enough to be propelled by the industry for that long. In practice, imagine the dread of the reviewer when they realise that maybe this much beloved classic is… well. Let’s just leave it at that for now. You’ll have to listen to the podcast itself for more. Tainted Grail: ( 22:23 ) - Oh no! It’s 7th Continent all over again. But grimdark! Long time viewers will know that that much beloved game did not sit well with these beloved reviewers inspite of its popularity. Is there more to this different spin on the genre of a giant map full of choose your own adventure hotspots and survival mechanisms? That’s what we’re here to talk about. Cloudspire: ( 44:30 ) - Remember when you used to say things like “light as a cloud?” Well, forget about it because Cloudspire comes in at a hefty ten kilograms of neoprene matts, poker chips and custom dice in this voluptuous board game take on the MOBA genre of video games. With a ruleset that prompted this genuine response from your favourite podcast host. Mailbag: ( 1:00:48 ) - Listener Lambert sent in a swarm of questions about our time with Gloomhaven. We were perhaps a touch too brief in answering them, but everything has good reasons. Want to send us a question? Fire it to efka@nopunincluded.com Want to leave a comment? We puzzle over the practices and intentions of game designers this week as though we were archaeologists trying to divine the practices of ashen Pompeiians. Why did these authors insert this mechanism into their artifact? Was it a mating ritual? Was it an obeisance to some vengeful, long-dead god? Was it to shoehorn in player interaction? Or was it to placate a Kickstarter audience? Oh, sorry, that one is redundant with the obeisance to a god thing. Fatherhood is the overall theme of this week's episode. Imagine Harry Chapin's Cat's in the Cradle, except with the father played by Vladimir the Great and the son by Svyatopolk the Accursed. "When you coming home, dad?" asks the Accursed, to which the reply is "I don't know when. But we'll get together then, son." And then, the son allegedly murders several of his siblings in a vicious power struggle. Just like in the song! Folk music of the seventies is more bloodthirsty than many people recall. Liz and Jeremy are back once again to talk about some bigger, meatier projects. Many of these were featured at the big show in Indy this past year, so into the wrap-up they go! Liz starts us off with Detective: City of Angels (10:16), the highly thematic case-solving game from Van Ryder Games that will unfortunately not hit retail due to scale and cost. Go ahead and check Kickstarter, as well as some conventions, if you want to get hold of this one. Next, Jeremy gives us some knowledge about Gugong (16:38), a mid-weight economic game set in the Forbidden City in China. Liz then jumps back in to share about a “dudes on a map”-type game with a slick auction system, Rurik: Dawn of Kiev (22;37). We wrap up with one of the most buzzed-about games at the whole con, the MOBA-style combat game with competitive, cooperative, and solo modes, Cloudspire from Chip Theory Games (31:36).
