In recent years, literacy has emerged as a prominent national issue, prompting a call to action in communities across the country. Building Our Future has stepped forward to confront the reading crisis in our own Kenosha County. Through strategic partnerships with schools, agencies, and organizations, an important initiative unfolded, leading to the introduction of Wisconsin Reading Corps as a literacy support at Brass Community School and Wilson Elementary School during the 2021-2022 academic year. The success story continues, with its expansion to additional schools: Jefferson Elementary, Grewenow Elementary, Somers Elementary School, Frank Elementary and Riverview School in Silver Lake. In this episode, we sit down with Felicia Dalton, Director of Strategic Initiatives with Building Our Future, Eric Hoffman, Director of Wisconsin programs with Wisconsin Reading Corps, and Kristy Makowka, Interim Principal from Jefferson Elementary. Together, they shed light on the power of literacy and the strides being made to equip K-3 students with the essential reading skills they need. Discover the passion, dedication, and impact of these literacy champions as they discuss their experiences, the challenges faced, and the victories achieved in the pursuit of a more literate and empowered future for the youth in Kenosha County. Tune in, be inspired, and share this episode with others to spread the word about the efforts underway to build a brighter, more literate future for our community.

Our Success to Significance Reunion Series continues with Delia Bullock Ferko, fellow classmate at Sherman, Texas Class of 1974. Enjoy hearing the colorful journey of Delia that is rich in detail about downtown Sherman. Having lived in Sherman for all but six years of her life, she knows more about the most number of people in our hometown. We stood together reciting The Pledge of Allegiance, ate very aromatic cinnamon rolls at Jefferson Elementary, and shared the milestone events like the Cuban Missile Crisis, hiding our heads under our desks and the JFK's Assassination. Our teacher, Mrs. Mackey wept. Thank you Delia for this extraordinary walk down memory lane.

Today's top STEM teachers embrace learning opportunities wherever they arise, whether it's baby squirrels that have fallen from their nest, or engineering design failures that literally go up in smoke. At the GeekWire Awards on May 18, we're celebrating two STEM Educators of the Year: Ted Rodriquez, an instructor for high school juniors and seniors at the Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center in Everett, Wash. Melissa Pearcy teaches kindergarten-through-fifth-grade students in her role as a science specialist at Jefferson Elementary, which is part of Spokane Public Schools. These teachers are among the best in delivering science, technology, engineering and math education. They're teaching students fundamental scientific principals -- but perhaps even more importantly, they're helping them learn how to solve problems, take risks, and recover from failure. The GeekWire Awards recognize the top innovators and companies in Pacific Northwest technology. Our STEM educator honorees were selected based on community nominations, along with input from GeekWire Awards judges. We recently spoke with the two teachers to learn more about their creative, engaging efforts to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. Bank of America is the sponsor of this award, now in its third year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S3 Summer Conversation Series with Genessee Montes We are back again this summer with our Summer Conversation Series! Our goal is to hit up as many educators as we can and share their response to a single summer question. Last year we asked all our guests a question about an external goal for education. “What's one thing you want to change about education?” This year though we are going with a more internal and reflective question. “What is one thing you want to change about yourself to be a better educator, leader, or colleague?” On this episode, Josh sits down with Genessee Montes, a principal in Mesa, AZ. Genessee is about to start her 11th year impacting students as the principal of Jefferson Elementary and she talks about what she wants to work on for our Summer Conversation Series. Genessee is also a Facilitator for AVID and the Hispanic Leadership Institute in Arizona. As a bonus our friend of the pod, Alex Valencic shared a little conversation with a student about why she loves punk rock! In this one, we gather up several very talented educators to discuss changes to the teaching profession and survival strategies in the era of Covid-19. We have two teachers from Albany's Capital Region - Jamie Pink and Tracy Trainor, a local guidance counselor, Lexie Phillips, and educator from Brooklyn, NY, and my niece, Jessica Lorenz. There is also a little warning for all teachers put to music at the top of the episode from yours truly... Some of the discussions: Recess- Will that go away? How about the lunchroom? Assembly programs? Teaching styles - how will it change when you are instructing kids on Zoom vs face to face? This and much more.. Also , if you go to my Facebook page @richiephillips - I have some clips of songs written by Jamie and Tracy's students in Jefferson Elementary and Menands School, The third clip is from Lexie Phillips' school -Carroll Hill in Troy during my "Reading, Writing and Rhyming" songwriting program - something I did for over 20 years during my "stint" as a morning radio cohost. Enjoy!
If you're a teacher with ideas and you are looking to connect with your principal about getting them in motion, this is the episode for you. Back in February of 2019, I posed a question on Twitter that got a lot of attention. It sparked an ongoing conversation with on of the administrators initially tagged in that Tweet. that conversation has brought us to this episode of Dear Teacher, Don't Give Up! In this episode, I talk with Dr. Christina Podraza, Principal of Jefferson Elementary. The conversation is wide-ranging about how teachers and principals can better relate with one another. In the end, teachers, we can walk away with some actionable tips: Engage with your principal on a personal level, assuming he or she is open to the idea of building any kind of relationship. Announce that you are trying something new, and invite your principal to give you feedback. Teachers, HAVE A PLAN. The faculty meeting is not a public forum, or brainstorming session, where you get to volley half-baked ideas for change. Show your principal that you are connecting with their priorities BEFORE offering your suggestions for improvement. REMEMBER, it’s not a once-in-a-life-time sales pitch; it’s a process. If you would like to connect with Christina further, you can find her the following ways: Website: christinapodraza.com Email: Contact form at her website Twitter: @christinapod Instagram: @jeffersond205 (The account of Christina's school) As for me, the host of the show, if you are currently working in education and have EVER thought about leaving, or right now, you’re a classroom teacher looking for the nearest exit, I want to hear your story. Please, contact me Email: makethemmasterit@gmail.com Twitter: @MakeThemMastrIt Voxer: Makethemmaster (Find me, title the chat w/ what you want to discuss, & talk!)
