We're back from the Historic African American Neighborhood and District Summit (HAANDS) and we're still buzzing! Deqah and Vanessa discuss the many things they learned about preservation-based economic development — and gush over the great people they met who are working to help their communities stay in place, connect with their past, and thrive into the future. Our experience at the summit really crystallized the importance of storytelling (and the work we do) when it comes to preserving communities of color. We have so many ideas for future episodes; we just need support from listeners like you to make them a reality. If you believe that the work we do matters, and want to see more of it, please donate to our PayPal page or Venmo. If you donate today (Giving Tuesday), your donation will be matched. If you want to know more about HAANDS, check out our previous conversation with co-founder Elijah Davis. Credits: Thank you to Claudia Polley and Krista Weatherholt of the Urban Legacy Lands Initiative who made our trip to Atlanta to attend the summit possible. Thanks to HAANDS co-founders Elijah Davis of Urban Impact and Lejuano Varnell of Sweet Auburn Works. This episode was edited by Vanessa Quirk and mixed by Connor Lynch. Elijah Davis is the co-founder of the Historic African American Neighborhood and District Summit, HAANDS, for short. HAANDS brings together professionals in historic preservation and storytelling, economic development and entrepreneurship, and community organizing to share ideas about what can be done to “preserve, enhance, and elevate” Historic Black places. In this conversation, we learn more about Elijah's family connections to Mobile, his work in community economic development with Birmingham-based Urban Impact, and how he started HAANDS with his co-founder Lejuano Varnell of Sweet Auburn Works. This year's summit will take place over November 17 and 18 in Atlanta Georgia — and guess what, listeners… we'll be there! Claudia Polley of the Urban Legacy Lands Initiative, which we featured in our Indianapolis episodes, has offered us a travel stipend to attend. To help us cover the remainder of our travel costs, we're hoping to raise $500 dollars from our listeners. If you believe in the work we do, sharing and preserving the histories of underrepresented people and places, then please donate to us via our PayPal page or Venmo. Note the word “HAANDS” when you donate. If you're interested in the future of black heritage lands, we think you'll really enjoy this conversation — and maybe even get inspired to join as at the summit! Hope to see you there! This episode I speak with community leader and my good friend BJ Stewart. BJ serves as the Chief Operating Officer at Urban Impact in Seattle Washington. Seattle is a global hot spot, a tech powerhouse with a buzzing scene for startups. But of course, there’s another story. The city saw a huge surge in coronavirus cases early on, which only served to exacerbate the problems for many local communities. BJ wants to help break the barriers to marketplace entry that marginalized entrepreneurs face, and Urban Impact is in a prime position to serve the diverse ethnic groups that dwell in the 98118 zip code. Breaking the cycle of poverty requires addressing the many facets that feed into a significant opportunity gap. Pastor Ed Glover of Urban Impact speaks to the Geneva community about the value and uniqueness of each person. „ You can continue planning to run your city with the same methods and the same people and same organizations - but disruption is gonna happen again and again and again.“ (Anthony Townsend, City Rebels Podcast Episode 1) In our first ever episode of City Rebels we kick off with an outstanding guest: Anthony Townsend (Twitter: @anthonymobile) Listening to our interview which we recorded back in November 2018 you will understand why Anthony is a real city rebel to us. His understanding and takes on smart cities have started way back when he was in college. For him, a smart city has always been more than big players implementing a new technology into the city's infrastructure or government. Since he has been looking at the topic of information and communication for more than twenty years so no wonder he brought out his first book "SMART CITIES: Big Data, Civic Hackers, and the Quest for a New Utopia" in 2014, discussing the use of big data and digitalization of our cities, and their transformation into smart cities. Besides publishing his first book, Anthony’s recent research has covered the future of automated and autonomous vehicles (AVs), the urban science movement, and big data and inclusion. One of his latest projects has been The Autonomous Vehicles: Future Scenarios supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of the Bloomberg Aspen Initiative on Cities and Autonomous Vehicles and NLC. So, let's jump into our first episode! To keep it simple and structured - here are the show notes *drum roll* This episode is all about smart cities and new technologies. Discover with us: What Smart Cities has to do with the 2008 Financial Crisis and what led to Anthony writing his first book "Smart Cities“ How different parts of the world approach the smart city movement The three giants Uber, Amazon and Airbnb and their impact on our cities How new mobility is changing real estate models Why we should talk more about last meter rather than last mile logistics What watershed management has to do with autonomous driving E-Scooters in our cities and their potential for automation The Autonomous Vehicles: Future Scenarios - Booklets What potentials Anthony sees in Berlin in terms of future technologies Anthony's current work on his new book: Ghost Road: Beyond the Driverless Car About this Podcast: We are Urban Impact, an agency from Berlin, scouting, connecting and helping urban tech startups to grow in Europe. Through our work we have been getting into touch with real change makers, people, that shape our cities, think forward and make a real difference to us. We call those people "city rebels", just like our Podcast. Working with people, talking to them made us realize, how many amazing stories are out there, which we want to share with you. In this interview, you will hear our interview with Ed Glover, Founder of Urban Impact, on the work he is doing to put a dent in the fatherless epidemic in our world today. In the interview, we talk about what why Ed created ManUp, why it's important, his advice to dads, his encouragement to those who have had wounds that came from a fatherless situation, and how you can get involved with Urban Impact. This interview was conducted at ManUp Pittsburgh at Victory Family Church. The conference was created and produced by Urban Impact. About Ed Glover: Rev. Dr. Ed Glover and his wife Tammy have passionately followed their calling to minister to the least, the last, and the lost in Pittsburgh’s urban North Side community for almost 30 years. Together they founded Urban Impact in 1995, after serving for almost a decade in youth ministry at Allegheny Center Alliance Church.Rev. Glover is a leader, a visionary, an evangelist, and a motivational speaker. In 2011, Pastor Ed received the prestigious Restoring Places Award at the Epoch Missions Gala in Atlanta, GA. In 2014, Urban Impact was also awarded the inaugural “True Inspiration Award” for the northeast region, from the Chick-fil-A Foundation for demonstrating “groundbreaking practices and visionary leadership” with an innovative education.Pastor Ed also founded Global Impact USA six years prior to Urban Impact’s inception. Global Impact was an annual, one-day missions event that gave students the charge to respond to the call of God in their lives and put it into practice. For the next 24 years, he incited over 55,000 kids from 19 cities to participate in the Global Impact mission. As a result, this produced over 1,000 pastors and missionaries to serve around the world.Today, Rev. Glover is a highly respected and sought-after speaker. He is regularly scheduled to speak at churches both locally and nationally. He currently serves as Associate Preacher and Director of Urban Missions at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Sewickley, PA.Ed graduated from Lambuth University in Tennessee and received his Masters of Divinity from Alliance Theological Seminary in Nyack, NY. Does Your Sunday Change Your Monday | John Gerhardt - Urban Impact | 3.3.2019 by Grace Church
Rev. Dr. Ed Glover Buzzsprout-844599 Sun, 28 Oct 2018 00:00:00 -0400 2005 Christ Church, Grove Farm, CCGF, Sewickley, Sanctuary, Wilson, Sermon, Ed Glover, Ephesians 2 , UIF Sunday, Urban Impact, workmanship, partnership full false
Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. - Luke 10:30 (ESV) One thing that amazes me about Jesus is his ability to see through all the smoke screens that people would put up especially religious people. Religious folk, like us, are great at using our faith as a shield to avoid love and action. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a great example of that kind of deflection. This week we have the privilege to have John Gerhardt with us. John is the director of Urban Impact ministry in NOLA. We have supported and ministered alongside John and the team there for many years. He will be opening up the word to this parable and he will be jumping in with the worship team. It should be a great morning!
Scripture: John 1:35-42. As we celebrate our partnership with the Urban Impact Foundation, the Rev. Dr. Ed Glover joins us to share the message of "The Power of One".
This is our second episode as an independent radio station. This was done live in the studio. And it was a very nice blessed hour interview with Maddie Ridgeway. Maddie has a lot of passion and belief in what she does. Her organization is called "Urban Impact" and it was a wonderful hour and blessing to hear what she believes God put on her heart to follow and help/assist her community, in North Pittsburgh. Please listen and share with everyone (this can't be stressed enough, to please share. We never know who will be touched to help). It was an inspiring hour to hear about her life, her love for dancing, her love for Jesus and to help these kids and to be there for her community. Right now she needs help to raise her salary as an urban missionary. This is a wonderful vision. Have a beautiful and blessed day, May God chase you down with favor in your life. In this episode of the L3 Leadership podcast, Doug Smith got to interview Pittsburgh Steelers Coach, Mike Tomlin at Urban Impact's annual Manup Pittsburgh event. In the interview you'll hear Doug ask Mike: If you could have coffee with your 15-20 year old self or a group of kids that we’re encouraging people to invest in, what would you tell them? What do you wish people knew about your journey what it took to get to where you’re at? What are some principles/character traits that you try to form in the young men who come under your influence as a head coach? How do you help them become men? One of your key principles that you teach is “The Standard is the Standard”. What is the origin of that statement? When you learned that and how do you apply it in your own life? What did you think you knew as a player about leadership and coaching that wasn’t actually true when you stepped into coaching? How do you handle criticism and praise? What can we do to serve you and partner with what you're doing? Enjoy the episode! To see the notes and ways to connect with Coach Tomlin and Urban Impact go to the show notes at L3Leadership.org/episode151 Mike's Bio: Mike Tomlin was named the 16th head coach in Pittsburgh Steelers history on January 22, 2007. Hired at the age of 34, Tomlin became only the third head coach hired by the Steelers since 1969. Through nine seasons, Tomlin has accomplished many things that have never been done in the team’s storied history. His 92-52 regular-season record (.639) is the best start in franchise history, and he became the youngest head coach in NFL history to both coach in and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII (26 years, 323 days). By winning the Super Bowl in only his second season as a head coach, he also became the fastest to win a Super Bowl title in Steelers history.
