1. The 2023 Baseball Hall of Fame candidates were announced and some former Cleveland players, Jhonny Peralta and Mike Napoli are on the ballot. Though we both know that Peralta and Napoli won't be making the Hall of Fame, we briefly discuss their careers and impact in Cleveland.2. Centerfield was a hot topic in 2022 with Myles Straw's offensive struggles. We explain why despite those struggles why Straw will be the Guardians starting centerfielder in 2023 barring anything shocking, and why he should be in for a bit of a rebound at the plate. We discuss Straw's centerfield value and why we think it makes sense that he'll be back as the starter.3. After discussing Myles Straw, we dig deep into other potential Cleveland centerfield options behind Straw, including Will Brennan and Will Benson, and then go prospect diving. We spend some good time on Petey Halpin, some names from the 2022 draft class, Isaiah Greene and Jaison Chourio as well.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Hi folks, we're back with another podcast summit with the Don't Call it a Rebuild, it's a Team Build podcast. Our special guest is Cody Stavenhagen, Tigers beat writer for The Athletic Detroit. Thanks to Cody for sitting in with us yet again as we recorded Monday night during the Tigers' loss to the Chicago White Sox. With the imminent debuts of three of the Tigers top prospects, there was much to discuss. We'll kick things off discussing Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, and Isaac Paredes, and get the latest word from Cody on reports out of Toledo prior to their call ups. Then we move on with a little speculation as to who else might find their way to Detroit in the very near future. We'll also get into the sense that these call ups mark the end of the teardown phase, and the beginning of Al Avila's mark finally making itself felt on the major league roster, for better or for worse. Of course, this isn't your Daddy's AL Central either. The competition appears set up to be a lot fiercer than during the Tigers 2011-2014 run atop the division. Finally, we discuss the struggles of Miguel Cabrera and Matt Boyd, debate the merits of the Jhonny Peralta card where Paredes defensive home is concerned, and consider which Tigers prospects will now get the invite to Toledo to work out with the Tigers alternates. The Indians made their first three camp cuts. For two players who were hurt it was logical, but what does it mean for the third player who had a career high in starts and innings a year ago. We look at some more injuries around the league. We take a look at this day in history which get us on the both of the last two extended Indians shortstops Jhonny Peralta and Asdrubal Cabrera. The 2010's was a memorable decade for the Indians. The team reached the playoffs four times, winning a wild card spot once and three AL East titles. The big years were 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018. 2016 was a magical year as the Indians went all the way to the World Series and reached Game 7 with the game tied in the 9th inning. They also discuss the recently shuffled rankings now that the draft and the J2 signing period are in the books. But, the trade deadline looms. Is Todd Frazier on the way? And if so, how much, how much is it going to cost the Red Sox? And will the players who will need to vie for a spot on the 40-man roster ahead of this winter's rule 5 draft be among the guys dealt? We are back to finish up our position previews for the 2016 season by talking about the starting and relief pitchers. First we cover some of the latest news in baseball, including Carter Capps, Jhonny Peralta and Pedro Alvarez. For starting pitching, it is a very deep position, but one that the top tier players have improved some much over the past few years. How does that change our strategy going into 2016? Also cover hot topics such as is Jake Arrieta for real? Can the new San Fran duo bounce back this year? Can stars bouncback from injury plagued 2015's? Super Sophmores and prospects. Relief pitching is such a roulette wheel all season long, you just never seem to know where the ball is going to drop and the closer loses their job. This makes drafting this position very interesting to me. Also what to do about Aroldis Chapman? Can Glen Perkins return to form? And the one guy you think will ultimately close that isn't set to start the season that way. Of course we finish each position with our sleepers and busts. As always can call into the show and join in on the conversation or ask us any questions. If you don’t want to call in you can send us messages on Twitter @FantasySixPack and @AppleGarthAlgar.

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex talks about the latest Red Sox offseason news with Steve Buckley of The Boston Herald. Alex and Steve talk about where the Red Sox are in the scheme of the offseason, as they've spent roughly $29 million of the $32 million that Alex Speier of WEEI.com hypothesized they could comfortably spend on next year's team. If the Red Sox are to make one more significant acquisition, it seems as if they will have to trade salary. The most likely candidates to be traded are veteran members of the starting rotation. The Red Sox have a surplus of starting pitching, especially considering all of the young arms in the minor leagues that are on the cusp of the major league roster. Stephen Drew's market appears to be drying up, as the Cardinals signed Jhonny Peralta last month and the Mets have spent close to $90 million in free agency. It's never wise to bet against Scott Boras, who eventually secured a four-year deal for his client Michael Bourn last winter. But Alex and Steve both think if a three-year contract isn't out there for Drew because of the draft pick compensation that's attached to him, the Red Sox should bring him back to play shortstop on a two-year basis. The Red Sox would be a better team next season with Xander Bogaerts at third base and Drew at shortstop than they would be with Will Middlebrooks starting on the left side of the infield. Alex and Steve also talk about whether the Red Sox have been too conservative this offseason, and if the team should sign either Jon Lester or David Ortiz to a contract extension this winter. Alex, by the way, thinks they should pay Lester market rate if he asks for it. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex discusses MLB's decision to ban home plate collisions from the game next season. MLB has chosen player safety over entertainment, and fans should be in support of the decision of they care about the long-term well being of players. Roy Halladay announced his retirement last week, and is more than deserving of Hall of Fame consideration. He was one of the most dominant starting pitchers in baseball for a ten-year stretch, and it's a shame he only appeared on the postseason stage five times. Speaking of starting pitching, the posting fee debate around Japanese phenom Masahiro Tanaka has been settled. The fee has been capped at $20 million, meaning any team that bids the $20 million for Tanaka can negotiate with him. Once he signs somewhere, the market for starting pitchers will begin to take shape. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Alex recently celebrated his 21st birthday, so belated birthday wishes are still welcome. (Please, he doesn't have a lot of friends...) "Without a Curse" will be on hiatus next Monday, Dec. 23. The next edition of "Without a Curse" will be published on Monday, Dec. 30. Enjoy the holidays!
Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex speaks with Tim Daloisio of Fire Brand AL. Alex and Tim talk about which of the four free agents2013Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Stephen Drew2013are most important for the Red Sox to resign. Though the market for Ellsbury has been developing slowly, Alex and Tim both feel he'll eventually receive a big payday. There is more money around the game than ever before, and not a lot of premium talent on the free agent market. Ellsbury will get a substantial deal, even if it takes a little longer than expected. The likelihood of Saltalamacchia and Drew leaving now that the catcher and shortstop markets have been set, as well as the possibility of the Red Sox dealing one of their starting pitchers is discussed as well. Prior to the interview with Tim, Alex says the Matt Kemp trade rumors are foolish, and resigns himself to the fact that Drew is likely a goner. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex gives his take on Alex Rodriguez's most recent antics. Though A-Rod storming out of his arbitration hearing and then crying on the radio to WFAN's Mike Francesa shows he is a petulant, egotistical, maniacal, self-absorbed, delusional, hypocrite, he kind of has a point. MLB's evidence against him may be copious, and he may have little chance to avoid the 211-game suspension. But the evidence was gathered in a dirty, criminal manner. Bud Selig went on a witch hunt to sink A-Rod, and now A-Rod wants to sink MLB along with him. There was a lot of hot stove action last week, as the Yankees signed Brian McCann, the Cardinals inked Jhonny Peralta, and the Tigers and Rangers pulled off a blockbuster trade involving Prince Fielder and Ian Kinsler. The McCann contract may look bad at the end, but the terms were to be expected. The most troubling thing for Yankees fans should be that the signing indicates the Yankees aren't changing their approach. They forfeited a first-round pick when they signed McCann, which means that they still don't value building organizational depth. They appear destined to continue to cycle through overpaid free agents in their 30s. The Fielder and Kinsler swap could work for both teams, as the Tigers cleared $76 million and the Rangers potentially acquired one of the elite power hitters in the game. The Rangers took on more risk, however, especially if Fielder's 2013 is an indication of a slow, painful decline. Alex concludes the show by paying respects to former MLBPA head Michael Weiner, who passed away at 51 after a 15-month battle with brain cancer last week. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Happy Thanksgiving!
It was another awful week in Cleveland sports. It was so bad in fact that I don't think Scott or I could even muster up any anger over it. When you get lulled out of anger and into straight depression, it doesn't mean it's any easier. It's just sadder. Anyway, here's the email I sent to Scott on Sunday night before we recorded on Monday morning... ---------------------- I was at the Browns game today. We don't need to spend too much time on that. It's over. The season is over. They'll be favored against the Jags, but I wouldn't bet on the Browns to beat any other NFL team right now. I'm missing next week's game driving back from thanksgiving. I normally rally the family at 6 AM to leave Indy so we can make it home in time for kickoff. Not doing it for this team. It's the first time that I'm missing a game in a long time and I really don't even care. I don't hate this team but I've never been with less passion in my life. Jhonny Peralta signed a 4 year deal for more than $50 million. Would Asdrubal get that today if he was working free agency? Plus this is the second straight year that a PED user went and got a deal after a suspension. Melky Cabrera last year. Taking the anger out with regard to the Cavaliers, what do you do if you're Dan Gilbert? I know he's not a sympathetic figure really, but what do you think he's thinking and feeling right now? Last but not least, I saw a really great movie filmed in Chagrin Falls. The Kings of Summer starred Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and some great unknown younger actors. While Cleveland / Chagrin Falls wasn't really a character in the film, it still have me pride. Local producer doing good work. Surprisingly funny. Learn more about your ad choices. On BYB Podcast 90, an exhausted Kurt, Al and HookSlide look back at the past week of Tigers' baseball, describe how they survived the ALDS, preview the ALCS, praise Jim Leyland and debunk the Moneyball narrative. Bless You Boys Podcast 90 has a running time of 1:16 and features Al Beaton, HookSlide and of course, Kurt Mensching. Topics: Surviving the ALDS: The Tigers were on their way to a sweep, were left for dead on the side of the road with fans wanting major changes, then scaring the living crap out of us, and finally on their way to the ALCS. The was plenty second guessing of Jim Leyland, but almost all of him moves worked. Max Scherzer, roller coaster reliever. Justin Verlander, stud ace. So much for Jhonny Peralta being rusty. Despite playing through what appears to be a major injury, Miguel Cabrera showed why you cannot bench him. Who broke Austin Jackson and can he be fixed in time for the ALCS? Sonny Gray or Bartolo Colon? The A's lost the ALDS in Game 4. The ALCS features a match up with the Boston Red Sox, and everything (best record, obnoxious fans, Fenway Park) that goes with it. Peralta and the Green Monster. The Tigers' edge over the Red Sox is their rotation. Cowboy Joe West named umpire crew chief of the ALCS. Expect an ump show! Predictions! The playoffs as a referendum on Moneyball Kurt SINGS! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On Bless You Boys Podcast 89, Kurt, Al and HookSlide look back at the past week of Tigers baseball, preview the ALDS, deny the existence of momentum, call Drew Sharp an idiot, have fun times with lawsuits and HookSlide does his Bill Simonson imitation. Bless You Boys Podcast 89 has a running time of 1:09 and features Al Beaton, HookSlide and of course, Kurt Mensching. Topics: Tigers are swept in Miami. Tigers are no-hit in Miami. Should we care about what happened in Miami? Momentum is a myth. The ALDS roster is set, any surprises? Drew Sharp of the Freep says the Tigers would have kept Jhonny Peralta off the roster, then goes into PED hysterics. Do the Tigers' playoff chances hinge on the health of Miguel Cabrera? We predict the ALDS winner. It's all about the Tigers' rotation. Lawsuits are everywhere. Alex Rodriguez gets litigious with Bud Selig and MLB, Albert Pujols looks to take down Jack Clark. Dusty Baker is fired, starting the managerial silly season early. The Wall Street Journal ranks the Tigers third in the playoff hateability index, whatever the Hell that is. HookSlide misses local announcers during MLB's playoffs. Kurt hates the "Downtrodden Detroit" trope. On BYB Podcast 88, Kurt, Al and HookSlide look back at the past week of Tigers baseball, Jim Leyland's tears, prepare for the post season, root for the Tribe, hope Brian McCann and the Braves lose and Kurt goes OFF on the usual sabermetric suspects. Bless You Boys Podcast 88 has a running time of 1:15 and features Al Beaton, HookSlide and of course, Kurt Mensching. Topics: The Tigers clinch the Central! Yet some fans are still not happy. Jim Leyland is cranky and crusty on the outside, a sentimental crier on the inside. Going into the series with the Marlins, the Tigers still had a mathematical chance at home field. Did they fold up their tents too soon? What worries you about this team entering the post season? Miguel Cabrera is what is at this point. What he isn't is healthy, and won't be anytime soon. The Jhonny Peralta outfield experiment begins to mixed reviews. Who's on and who's off the playoff roster? A wild Wild card race goes to the final day of the season. If Brian McCann and the Braves weren't around to enforce silly unwritten rules and proper home run etiquette, ANARCHY would ensue. Bud Selig announces he will step down as MLB Commissioner in January 2015. Will his legacy be positive or negative? Kurt goes off on extremists. Extremist sabermatricians, that is. Bless You Boys Podcast 87 has a running time of 58 minutes and features Al Beaton, HookSlide and Kurt Mensching. Topics include" The summer of HookSlide and HookSlide Jr. ends by attending Tigers' batting practice. Kurt was WRONG. Is playoff home field advance as important as some in the media make it out to be? Injuries continue to pile up, the latest being Jose Iglesias. Bruce Rondon's bullpen role. October left field candidates include Andy Dirks, Matt Tuiasosopo, Don Kelly and Jhonny Peralta. Someone is going to be left on the outside looking in. Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez and pinch running. AL MVP and Cy Young were thought to be all but locked up by Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer a month ago. Bless You Boys Podcast 86 has a running time of 1:08 and features Al Beaton, along with the singing debuts of HookSlide, and Kurt Mensching. Topics include: A 4 1/2 game lead? DOOOOOM. The Tigers' lead is back to six? Never mind. Jhonny Peralta is working out with the team. Does Peralta's rejoining the team ensure he'll be activated when the suspension ends? Should he be? Should morality play into this decision at all? Peralta in left field. Good or bad idea? Who should be worried about being left off the playoff roster if Peralta is activated? Max Scherzer, Anibal Sanchez and the AL Cy Young. On top of being injured, Miguel Cabrera is slumping. The future of Omar Infante. Ump show? Ump show! Charlie Marcuse, aka The Singing Hot Dog Man is fired for being anti-ketchup. The Marlins' Jose Fernandez hits a home run, breaks several unwritten baseball rules. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex talks about the Red Sox' important series victory over the Diamondbacks last weekend, as they keep pace with the Rays in the AL East. Jake Peavy tossed seven spectacular innings in his Red Sox debut, and Alex says there is no reason why Peavy can't be a big contributor for this team down the stretch. The Red Sox, according to John Tomase of The Boston Herald, are 4-15 against elite pitching in the American League. One way to beat good pitching is by countering with good pitching, and Peavy is certainly a good pitcher. Alex also discusses the Red Sox' amazing comeback win on Thursday night, and says how a great approach at the plate and great depth are the main reasons why the Red Sox have had so many walk-off victories this season. John Henry purchased The Boston Globe for $70 million late last week, and Alex talks about how the Globe sports department will be perceived now that Henry is the boss on Morrissey Blvd. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a closer look at the AL East standings, and shares a startling statistic on David Price's recent dominance. Startling, by the way, is a word one could use to describe Matt Garza's sexism... Alex leads off the show discussing the pending Biogenesis suspensions, and how though Alex Rodriguez is far from a victim, it's apparent MLB and the Yankees have a vendetta against him. A-Rod isn't the only player who will be suspended tomorrow, as reportedly up to 12 others will be handed punishments. Jhonny Peralta and Nelson Cruz are both pending free agents, and are on teams with postseason aspirations. It will be fascinating to see if they appeal their suspensions, or serve them right away. There are consequences to both decisions.

There's not much conclusive news about Chris Perez right now, and that took some of the wind out of our sails. Still, we had a conversation about a lot of the "what ifs" before getting into the real meat of the Indians' troubles right now as they work through the hardest part of their schedule so far this season.
