Lorcan Finnegan's wild and weird trip-fest flick The Surfer is one that's had local audiences salivating at the prospect of its arrival. That anticipation went into hyperdrive when Oscar winning actor and walking cult-factory Nicolas Cage was announced as the leading man, a bloke returning home to the South West to buy his family home, reconnect with family, and surf a little. His idea of a Christmas sojourn is scarpered when 'the locals', headed up by Julian McMahon at his career best, thwart his chance of escaping the heat and securing the home he has his eyes on.The Surfer is, admittedly, a divisive flick, with reactions ranging from comparisons to Wake in Fright, to our own critic Cody Allen voicing displeasure with it. I personally found the film akin to that of a dehydrated fever dream, as if you're continually out of reach of hydrolytes and salvation, so instead you have to resort to drinking dog shit filled water and maybe chowing down on local rodents to get by. It's sweaty, filthy, and at times, oddly representative of what it feels like to visit Margaret River and Yallingup after downing too many bevvies at Beerfarm. And yeah, those comparisons to Ted Kotcheff's flick feel apt given its presentation of masculinity, but to me it's more like a West Aussie version of the seventies thriller The Swimmer. There's something really sweaty about The Surfer, a mystery embedded in a world of mean and mad folks who each have a sly streak of cruelty, wrapped up in that familiar Aussie friendliness. I was never sure where Lorcan Finnegan and writer Thomas Martin was taking me, but I was bloody happy to be dragged along in the process. There's a risk taking mindset to The Surfer, one that pushes at the boundaries of what Aussie films or stories can be. If this is where Aussie stories told from non-Aussie perspectives might be going, then strap me in, I'm on for the whole ride.As Western Australia ramps up to becoming a full throttled filmmaking state with the 2026 arrival of our first 'film studios', it then became a good time to touch base with surrogate sandgroper Robert Connolly, this time wearing a producer hat, to talk about his role in bringing The Surfer to WA shores, what his experience of having made films like Paper Planes and Blueback brings to a major production like this one, and additionally, what his producing presence means for filmmakers, actors, and Aussie creatives. It's always a delight to be able to talk to Robert, just as it's been a delight to be able to see the global reaction to a film like The Surfer. If you're in Australia, you'll have your chance to catch the film on the big screen - just how it's meant to be seen - from 15 May, before it heads onto Stan. later in the year.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. The Essential 11
Inner Strength for Outer Success: Developing Healthy Self-Worth w/ Cody Allen

The Essential 11

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 11, 2023 33:23

Self-worth is the belief in one's own intrinsic value and abilities. It's important to recognize that self-worth comes from within and cannot be determined by external factors. Self-worth is the foundation upon which we build confidence and resilience, allowing us to face challenges with a positive mindset and overcome obstacles. It's crucial to develop a healthy sense of self-worth in order to lead fulfilling lives and reach our full potential. Cody Allen imparts his life's lessons, wisdom, and counsel to everyone listening today. Your value doesn't decrease based on someone's inability to see your worth. After all, self-worth comes from one thing - thinking that you are worthy. Tune in as young leaders ask questions about life, personal growth, and more! Quotes: “The biggest thing that I learned at a young age, and then I still carry through today is that doing the unpopular thing.” – Cody Allen “The further that you find people getting away from their core values, the more their life is apt to fall down.” – Cody Allen “If you work hard at something, you should be extremely proud of it.” – Cody Allen Takeaways: Doing the right thing isn't always popular or easy. It takes courage and conviction to stand up for what you believe in, even if it means going against the crowd. Ultimately, doing the unpopular thing can lead to personal growth and can be a catalyst for change. It's important to stay true to yourself and your values, even in the face of challenges or outside pressures, to avoid losing sight of what truly matters. When we put in the effort to achieve something, we should take pride in our accomplishments, regardless of the outcome. It's important to recognize and appreciate the hard work that goes into achieving our goals, and not let fear of failure or self-doubt overshadow our achievements. Conclusion: Self-worth is something that can't be earned or given by others - it comes from within. Often, we look to external sources for validation, however, it's important to remember that we don't need others to determine our worth. Instead, we can treat ourselves with kindness and respect, celebrating our strengths and accomplishments. Remember to be gentle with yourself when you make mistakes and learn from them instead of dwelling on them. Ultimately, you are already worthy just by existing. So, take care of yourself and recognize your own intrinsic value.

All this while solving crimes while driving around in a fancy car.    1984's Riptide starred Perry King as Cody Allen and solved mysteries with his friends Nick and Boz, while driving around in a fancy car.    Simon and Simon were two brothers who, while opposite in a lot of ways, were great at solving mysteries and driving around in a variety of fancy cars.    Hardcastle and McCormick premiered in 1983 and starred the legendary Brian Keith as Judge Hardcastle who is trying to catch a bunch of criminals who escaped conviction with the help of a car thief named McCormick, who drives around in a stolen fancy car.    Hunter set the stage for overly-macho guys who carry big guns, but sometimes have a female partner. Back Sports Page presents a new episode of the Exit Velo podcast with your host Adam Cohen and Henry Winkelhake. In this episode of the Exit Velo podcast, Adam Cohen and Henry Winkelhake discuss the eye-popping fourteen-year, $340 million extensions given to one of the most exciting young players in the game. The duo mentions a couple of other players who can receive an extension, and how the Padres' finances will suffer from yet another megadeal. Besides Tatis Jr.'s outrageous deal, Cody Allen, Brian Dozier, and Tim Tebow all retire and the crew looks back at each of their baseball careers. Afterward, the team talks about minor MLB transactions, such as the Yankees re-signing Brett Gardner, the A's spending money for a change, and the Padres adding low-cost, high reward additions to their bullpen. To cap off the show, Adam and Henry debate who is the best second baseman in baseball. In baseball's most top-heavy position, there is a lot of disagreements between each list. We start out talking about why the Shane Bieber revelation about COVID is potentially the biggest Indians story in weeks. As Cleveland fans saw with Myles Garrett a full recovery is never guaranteed. Then we take time to discuss the long and great career of Oliver Perez and why Indians fans should be happy he is back. We go over concerns, but also take time to appreciate a player who debut in 2002 as a violate starter and in 2021 will be pitching as a reliable reliever. Then we talk about Cody Allen, who had one of the most amazing climbs in franchise history on his way to being the greatest closer in team history. We talk about how strange it is his career is ending at 30 while is draftmate Francisco Lindor is just hitting his prime. We talk about the class, for awhile. The Cleveland Indians have been scuffling winners over the first six weeks of the season. While their 18-14 record puts them atop the American League Central by a game over the Minnesota Twins, the team has yet to click for more than a game or two at a time. No, it's not a time to worry, but while we're waiting for this team to get healthy and put it all together, there are some interesting struggles emerging. Sure, it's WAY too early to be talking about first place, and worries, with a roster as talented as this one, but it's still something to put in your back pocket, as the summer season grows closer. Today, WFNY's Jim Pete and Mike Hattery dive into a few of these conversations, discussing the fantastic bullpen, the suddenly thin-ish rotation, and of course, how the Indians are handling Yandy Diaz, and what and how they're presenting his talent to the public. We're on Patreon and you can support us! Subscribe: iTunes Stitcher Google Play YouTube Here's the line-up: The bullpen is elite, the rotation is really good. All things considered, how good are they? Can the bullpen and rotation carry the team if the offense struggles for long stretches because the American League just sucks...and Mike isn't chatty. The Nick Goody experiment Goody as a high leverage reliever at some point? Yeah, we have to talk about Yandy Diaz. They sent him down to work on multiple positions and get every day at bats, and they brought him up to be a utility...super. We recorded this podcast on Sunday...so we have predictive powers. Mike is offended...OFFENDED...about the 25th man usage. The Michael Martinez defense How to use Yandy, and get him at bats Protecting Kipnis and Brantley Left-handed pitching, and why it's killing us right now, and why it won't always be that way There are natural factors which cause us to struggle against lefties when Encarnacion and Guyer are struggling Yandy Diaz ISN'T A CONTROL ISSUE... Cody Allen and Andrew Miller Has Andrew Miller become the "Corey Kluber" of the bullpen, lifting the rest of the pen? Fun bullpen usage Rotation depth worries? Salazar's a risk, can't punt Bauer, Tomlin is always a concern, and Triple A pitchers are struggling Clevinger is a five-and-fly dude A way too early talk about trading for a starter...because Cooney and Frias There likely is enough talent in the rotation and beyond, to compensate Cost of a starter, could be a worry, unless the market is flooding Minor League talk: Worried about the Indians overall depth? Loving Thomas Pannone There's some really good talent, but there's a gap between the now guys, and the then guys players taking a step back Logan Ice...a catcher to keep any eye on?
