SAN ONOFRE-Same time next year, lil ole yarnspinner you, John?! Hey Big O, What a definition of perilous dire straits this week has been. A fog! Sunday night I was hit with some sort of bug. I wasn’t sure if it was TB, polio, or leprosy. I was fit for an iron lung. I spent from Monday til Wednesday sliding into dream visions. And, my brother, they weren’t enlightening or visually stunning. No! These things were dull and uncomfortable. I dreamt my niece and her family were like the Joads from “The Grapes Of Wrath”. I had to push their jalopy up the San Bernardino Mountains. Nothing but broken inner tubes, metal wash basins, and feral chickens. The next dream was more depressing and went on for days. I was in a truly square conference room stuck at a cafeteria style folding table. The room was packed to the gills with evangelicals. All in polyester suits. Donald Trump was at a dias. He was bragging about himself. Then he started lecturing about his past lives through the eons. Dating back to ancient Egypt. I was feeling uncomfortable. I looked at my arm and noticed I was wearing an ugly brown suit. I finally pulled myself out of the sick bed to take care of business. I was walking like the undead and had an I.Q. of even less. I passed a large hillbilly woman that was smoking a cigarette who gave me the stink eye. She was wearing a t-shirt that read “If you’re going to be salty then bring the tequila “. If I had my 110% I would have talked about it when we talked; now follow me along here… Vincennes. It’s the center of the universe. The whole burg believes if a nuclear war was to happen it would be the first place to be bombed. Iggy Pop peeing in a drink and trying to serve it to a guy I used to work for. That is only the tip of the iceberg. Joe South and his importance to me right now and the writing of this latest TH album. Plus all of his songs are self help odes. And I know nothing about that! No album title yet. That’s how that one goes. Playing Deep Blues Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi this fall and hitting Memphis and elsewhere way down in the south. JOHN FORD: THE INFORMER & GRAPES OF WRATH W/RICK PATT!Our two-part John Ford series begins with Ford fan and podcast pal Rick Patt joining us and curating the films!For part one we watched two Oscar winning award-winning Ford films made before he and John Wayne became entwined in their classic western collaborations (that's next week). THE INFORMER (1935) won Ford a Best Director Oscar! It features an Oscar-winning performance by Victor McLagen as a large, dim brute "Gypo" Nolan in the latter days of the Irish civil war in 1925. When the opportunity comes to turn in an old chum with a reward on his head, Gypo does the unthinkable and does just that. With the money he can now sail to America with his sweetheart! Sweet, right? However, a  night of drunkenness leads Gypo into the unthinkable as the money spills away in drink and debauchery.  A claustrophobic, smokey nightmare that, not surprisingly, ends poorly for our lad.  McLagen gives a brilliant old-school performance of big gestures and confused morals and Ford shoots in an unsparing bravura style GRAPES OF WRATH (1940)  won Ford another Best Director Oscar and is one of his best remembered  for good reason. A dynamite script and a cast to die for brings John Steinbeck's Pulitzer and National Book Award winning depression-era road trip classic about the Joads making their way from Oklahoma to California into a stirring reminder of both resilience and how crappy some folks can be.  Top five all-time cinematographer Gregg Toland shoots the living hell out of this in one of the best-looking black and white films in the era known for the best-looking black and white  films. The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck, chapter 30, Narrated by Isaac BirchallIn this chapter, The Rain pours down, on the third day, the wainwrights suggest to leave. The river is flowing fast and starting to rise. Uncle John and Pa decide to try and build a bank to block the river. A scream. Rose of Sharon goes into Labor, and the men work harder still, pushing themselves until they can work no longer. like the men, Rose of Sharon continues to push...The Joads decide to try and wait out the Rain in the box car with the Wainwrights, however after many days of rain, and Rose of Sharon being very weak after giving birth, they decide move somewhere safer and dryer.  Al decide to stay behind with Aggie, so the main family leaves him behind, not knowing if they will ever see each other again. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 28 Narrated by Isaac BirchallIn this Chapter, The Joads continue working on the cotton fields in the day, and return to their box car home at night, with Ma sneaking food off to Tom while his face recovers.  After working a while however, Ruthie lets slip that Tom is hiding because he has killed someone. ma has to slink away to tell Tom, and come to terms with herself, that He has to go.Ma comes back from her conversation with Tom. She finds out that he is looking for workers to pick cotton on the farm he's hiring for. She takes this news back to her family and her neighbors. They also announce that their daughter and Al are going to get married. The next day they set out to work, hoping to get there before everyone else, and the looming storm so they can earn as much as possible before the cotton becomes too wet. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 26, Narrated by Isaac BirchallIn this chapter, the Joad family prepare to leave the camp. There is no work around, and they need to get some as Rose of Sharon's baby is almost due. Ma reprimands the men for not having found any work and having not talked about it. Al then goes off to say goodbye to a girl he has been seeing.The Joads officially leave the Weedpatch camp and take to the highway north in search of work.  They have 1 dollar to their name, and all seems to be going well until, being the only car on the road, they hit a nail. They stop and get out and inspect their tire to find it punctured.  While trying to fix it, a roadster pulls up and asks them if they're looking for work, and that there is work a little bit down the way picking peaches.  He then leaves them and the tire gets fixed. They pile back into the car, determined to go to the peach orchard.the Joads finally find work, picking peaches. The work is fairly easy, but at only 5 cents a box, it takes a full day's work to earn only a dollar.  Ma then takes the dollar to buy food, and finds out that all of the prices have been inflated for a stupid reason.Tom goes off to explore the new camp, and more importantly, check out the protest they saw when arriving. He skulks his way through the camp, and finds a ditch where he can squeeze under the fence. Outside, he comes across a tent, wherein he finds the "preacher" Casey, fresh out of prison. He tells Tom about his time in prison, and he has been trying to get the migrant people to fight for better rights. that is until the men arrive...Tom tells his family about the events of the pervious night, and how his face became the way that it did.  Just as Casey predicted, the Strike was bust, and the price was dropped to 2 cents a box. Throughout the day tom flitters with the idea of leaving to protect his family, but Ma's words stay with him, and he promises not to go, not yet.The Joads gather their things are decide to leave the peach camp. With all of the new men coming to work, it's impossible to earn enough to feed the family. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, chapter 13 , Narrated by Isaac Birchall.In this chapter, the Joad family are truly on their way to California, with Al driving the truck, listening to, and feeling the car, making sure that there are no strange noises or shakes that the truck makes. While driving, he asks ma if she is concerned about California, and if she thinks that it will live up to what they all hope for it to be.The Joads continue their journey, driving through the cities and towns that line route 66. They eventually decide to stop for the evening, reasoning that they can't make the trip in one go.  they pull up, and meet a husband and wife, who are also leaving for California. Grandpa's condition worsens and the new family is kind enough to let Grandpa sleep in their tent. Grandpa doesn't sleep however, and has a stroke, while the wife, and Casey are at his bedside.The Joads have to decide how to bury Grandpa. If they message the coroner's office then they pay $40. If they don't then he will have to be buried here in an unmarked grave.  They conclude to bury him here, and to avoid any policing, they have Tom write a message in a bottle for him.  Later, Tom and Al suggest to the family and their new friends that they should share the load. Their truck is too heavy as it is, and if they share the load, then they'll all have a getter chance of getting to California. It is still operational and has been on Mars for over 8 years.John “Grizzly” Adams - When talking to Schmidt, Sadie refers to vaginas as a “Grizzly Adams.” John “Grizzly” Adams was a famous mountain man and grizzly bear trainer. He loved the outdoors and nature and eventually cared for and trained grizzlys for display, zoos, and circuses.Pommel horse - Jess mentions falling off of a pommel horse when being worried about having affected her own fertility. The pommel horse is a part of artistic gymnastics that is traditionally only used by male gymnasts. It has a metal body covered with foam rubber and leather with plastic handles, also known as pommels.“Arrive at the bridge, meet the troll, and then answer his riddles three” - When Schmidt is meeting with Sadie he shares the above phrase. While not specific to any one story, this is a common trope in movies and stories where there is a troll guarding a bridge that won't let anyone past unless they pass a test, usually with 3 questions.Studio 54 - One of Emma's fantasies that she explored with Schmidt on this episode was a French maid handyman with a Studio 54 busboy. Studio 54 is a Broadway theatre in Manhattan and used to be a disco nightclub. Yea in a world full of Christians and money, the world burns and dies. Which means land and hypocrisy rule us. The people in power fuck us until we are underground, then they fuck our memories. There is enough money to heal the world. To Make it a happy place .
