Say hello to Red Skelton, a favorite of comedy fans for five decades. Red considered himself more of a clown than a comedian and his routines were filled with colorful characters and sight gags. A solid draw in movies back in the 1940s, Red took the leap to television when that medium arrived and he was a smash. Red was also famous for "working clean" which made him a family favorite both on screen (large and small) and on stage. Red also had a side career as a painter, specializing in -- what else -- portraits of clowns. « Dis-moi à quel jeu tu joues, je te dirai qui tu es », est une série spéciale de RFI à la découverte des jeux populaires à travers le monde. Ces jeux qui, à travers les joueurs, parlent de la culture et de l'identité de chaque pays. Aujourd'hui, direction la France et plus précisément Lyon, où l'association des Béninois du Rhône-Alpes organise une après-midi de jeu autour de l'awalé. Ce jeu de semailles est le jeu de société africain le plus répandu, de l'est à l'ouest du continent et jusqu'aux Antilles. Entre transmission et nostalgie, pour la diaspora africaine, l'awalé fait le lien entre l'enfance au pays et la vie en France. Reportage à Lyon de Welly Diallo. Assis face à son adversaire, Julio se concentre. D'une main, il saisit quelques graines qu'il dissémine le long du plateau : « J'ai grandi avec mes grands-parents au pays donc je connaissais déjà l'awalé. » Julio maîtrise le jeu, mais ça ne veut pas dire qu'il gagne chaque fois. « J'ai joué avec quelqu'un de beaucoup plus expérimenté que moi donc euh... Non ! », s'amuse-t-il. Le jeune Béninois n'avait presque aucune chance face à Bienvenue Kenke, le trésorier de l'association des Béninois de Rhône-Alpes, pour qui ces rencontres autour des jeux oscillent entre transmission et nostalgie. « Ça permet aussi à ceux qui sont à Lyon de rester dans le mood des anciens jeux malgré leur âge adulte pour transmettre à leur descendance, explique Bienvenue Kenke. Comme on s'est retrouvé ici, on s'est dit : sortons notre awalé pour que ceux qui sont venus il y a longtemps soient toujours dans le mood de l'ancien temps. » Sur la table d'à côté, Odette la doyenne, retrouve ce « mood de l'ancien temps », cette ambiance, cette excitation d'autrefois. Depuis son arrivée, elle enchaîne les victoires et explique les bases du jeu aux nouveaux-venus. Aujourd'hui, l'awalé se joue dans presque tous les pays d'Afrique subsaharienne. À l'origine, le jeu a émergé entre le XIIIe et le XIVe siècle au Ghana. Puis, la traite négrière va contribuer à son expansion aussi bien en Afrique qu'aux Antilles. L'historien Joseph Salumu Kamangu est le président de l'association africaine des jeux et sports traditionnels : « À l'époque, à chaque déportation par la traite négrière, ces gens-là emmenaient l'awalé avec eux. L'awalé, que l'on appelle aussi l'adji ou owaré, est présent dans les ateliers et séances de jeux, et même jusqu'au festival Yardland de hip-hop, dancehall et R'n'B, qui a eu lieu à Paris début juillet, à l'hippodrome de Vincennes. Dans son stand, Ngoufo Gangnimaze, président du Club Awalé, a proposé aux festivaliers de découvrir le jeu. « Il y a beaucoup d'enthousiasme parce que l'awalé, c'est le jeu le plus connu en France. Les gens viennent très naturellement parce qu'il y a un capital sympathie fort. Et nous, tout ce qu'on a à faire, c'est intervenir dans des festivals, des foires des fêtes de jeux pour faire connaître l'awalé et les jeux africains », raconte Ngoufo Gangnimaze. Faire découvrir le jeu, mais à condition qu'il reste africain, surtout dans sa fabrication : « C'est les Chinois qui ont pour l'instant le monopole de cette fabrication-là. Ils les vendent essentiellement dans les centres commerciaux, grandes surfaces et boutiques en ligne, commente Ngoufo Gangnimaze. Il faut s'investir dans cette industrie, les Africains doivent prendre l'espace, investir dans la fabrication du jeu, faire du lobbying en fait ! Moi, j'ai déjà rencontré des ergothérapeutes qui utilisaient l'awalé pour exercer leurs patients dans tout ce qui est la psychomotricité finee. » Outil pour soigner, pour éduquer, pour se souvenir d'où on vient... If you don't have any money to spare but still want to give back, pray and tell others– prayers and listeners are worth more than gold!   TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Popeular History, a library of Catholic knowledge and insights.   Check out the show notes for sources, further reading, and a transcript.   Today we're discussing another current Cardinal of the Catholic Church, one of the 120 or so people who will choose the next Pope when the time comes.   One of eleven children, Philippe Xavier Christian Ignace Marie Barbarin was born on October 17, 1950 in Rabat, Morocco, located right in the middle of the second big inward curve if you're following the coast coming up from south. Though Morocco is over 99% Muslim, Rabat has popped up on our radar before, thanks to recent Cardinal López Romero winding up as Archbishop of Rabat after his continent hopping journeys. Cardinal Barbarin hasn't gotten credit as Morocco's first Cardinal, when you Google that up you get lots of Lopez Romero. Granted, Philippe Barbarin wasn't born in the modern nation of Morocco, rather he was born in French Morocco, like Cardinal Mamberti, if you remember that. And it's fair to not count colonizers who never really lived the same lives as the locals. I don't know for sure that Philippe actually fits that description, but that's also not the only reason folks might not be in a rush to credit him as the first Moroccan Cardinal… but I'm getting ahead of myself.   After Moroccan independence, Philippe wound up in France, experiencing the joys of military service while also studying a little theology and a lot of philosophy in Paris, getting a licentiate in the former from the Carmes Seminary and a doctorate in the latter from the Sarbonne.   In 1977, Philippe Barbarin was ordained a priest for the young diocese of Créteil, centered on an eponymous suburb southeast of Paris. From 1977 till 1985, he served as Vicar in two parishes: Notre-Dame d'Alfortville and Notre-Dame de Vincennes, Notre-Dame of course being French for “Our Lady”, on the off chance that you got this deep without already knowing that.   From ‘85 to ‘90, Father Barbarin served two parishes and a school simultaneously, as well as an ecumenical role in the diocese. The parishes, if you're wondering, were Saint François de Sales d'Adambille en Saint-Maur, and Saint-Hilaire de la Varenne.   From ‘91 to ‘94, Father Barbarin served as the pastor of Saint Léger Parish and then transferred quite a ways, effectively being loaned out to the Archdiocese of Fianarantsoa in Madagascar, where he taught theology at the Major Seminary of Vohitsoa. Which explains the presence of Malagasy, the dominant language of Madagascar, on the list of languages Cardinal Barbarin Speaks, along with English, Italian, Spanish, German, and of course his native French.   1998 was white phone time, when Father Barbarin heard from Pope Saint John Paul the Second that he was going to be made Bishop of Moulins, back in France. As is so often the case, you can see why the three bishops that consecrated him were chosen for the task: his principal consectator was the Archbishop of Fianarantsoa, who he had been serving under in Madagascar, accompanied by his original bishop in France from Créteil, as well as the Bishop emeritus of Moulins who he was replacing.   Physically located in pretty much the exact center of France, it's worth noting that I simply do not trust the demographic data Catholic-Hierarchy.org has for the Diocese of Moulins. I want to give them credit for their essential work, and it's entirely possible the error is in the sources they're relying on and not some issue on their end, but I don't see how you can have the shifts shown in the period recorded. I'm sure I've missed flagging bad data before, so don't take this as an indication that I'll point it out whenever there's something fishy floating around, but I do what I can and felt I should mention the oddity there. At some point when I get around to it I'll cross reference their source material since they're kind enough to cite it.   In 2002, Bishop Barbarin was chosen as the next Archbishop of the ancient see of Lyon in southeasternish France. Allegedly, Lyon was the Capital of the Gauls back when the Gauls were a thing, and in any event it's pretty universally agreed that it's old enough one of its first bishops was a disciple of a disciple of Saint John, so basically Jesus' spiritual great-grandson, and that wasn't even the *first* bishop there. To this day, the Archbishop of Lyon also carries the title of Primate of the Gauls.   In 2003, that is, at the next opportunity, Archbishop Barbarin was made a Cardinal, which is completely unsurprising given the status of Lyon: every Archbishop of Lyon in the 20th century was made a Cardinal. And as we know, the red hat gets you additional duties: he was made a member of the Congregations for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. Of course the most famous duty of a Cardinal is the one he exercised in the conclave of 2005 that elected Pope Benedict, and again in the 2013 election that gave us Pope Francis.   Later on in 2013, Cardinal Barbarin suffered a heart attack while in South America preparing for World Youth Day. An unsourced wikipedia entry states that he underwent a successful triple bypass surgery in Martinique a few days later, and I think it's safe enough to say something like that happened: in any event he did survive.   In 2016, Cardinal Barbarin began to get asked questions about his handling–or lack thereof-of a bad priest, a certain Father Bernard Preynat. Content warning, I'm not going to go into graphic detail but yes we're talking about the abuse of minors here. From 1971 to 1991 Father Preynat abused some seventy minors he encountered principally through the scouting program.   Obviously, and allow me to stress this emphatically, the charge against Barbarin was not the abuse itself, but rather his lack of disclosure of the situation to the authorities. This was very much a charge though, because his lack of reporting was apparently a crime, and as a victim myself- though not of clergy- rightly so. Apparently in 2019 when Cardinal Barbarin was originally convicted of failing to report and was given a six month suspended sentence, he offered his resignation to Pope Francis, who initially refused, speaking of the presumption of innocence, which seems an odd line to take given Barbarin had *just* been convicted, but hey what do I know.   In any event, the next year Cardinal Barbarin's conviction *was* overturned on appeal, so it seems Pope Francis was perhaps wise to wait, but then in March his holiness turned around and accepted Cardinal Barbarin's resignation after all, making him the Archbishop Emeritus of Lyon.    Cardinal Barbarin says he is available for whatever mission Pope Francis might entrust him with next.   Barring a further change in his status, which to be clear I do not expect as I think it would have happened already if it was going to happen, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin remains eligible to participate in future conclaves until he turns 80 in 2030.   Today's episode is part of Cardinal Numbers. Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, que nous connaissons sous le nom de marquis de Sade, est un écrivain renommé, connu notamment pour une œuvre emblématique, "Justine ou les malheurs de la vertu", qu'il rédige à la Bastille en 1787.Mais si le nom de Sade est passé à la postérité, c'est davantage en raison des dérèglements de sa vie. Au point, d'ailleurs, d'avoir inspiré le mot "sadisme".Ses livres, où la pornographie et la violence, sous toutes ses formes, ont la part belle, et sa vie, émaillée de scandales, lui ont valu de très nombreux séjours en prison. Il y a en effet passé 27 ans, sur les 74 que comporte sa vie.En 1768, alors qu'il a 28 ans, Sade défraie une première fois la chronique. Il est accusé d'avoir suborné une veuve, puis de l'avoir entraînée dans une maison d'Arcueil, dans la région parisienne, où il lui aurait fait subir divers sévices.Le scandale éclate et le marquis, protégé par sa famille, n'écope que d'une peine d'emprisonnement de quelques mois, au château de Saumur.Mais quatre plus tard, en 1772, alors qu'il séjourne à Marseille, il fait encore parler de lui. La rumeur l'accuse de s'être livré, en compagnie d'un valet de cinq jeunes filles, à diverses débauches, dont la sodomie, alors passible de la peine capitale.Et, de fait, il est condamné à mort par le Parlement de Provence. Mais il échappe à la justice en s'enfuyant en Italie, en compagnie d'une belle-sœur dont il fait sa maîtresse. Il est alors arrêté sur l'ordre du duc de Savoie et incarcéré au fort de Miolans, dans l'actuel département de la Savoie.D'autres prisons suivront. En effet, Sade est emprisonné au donjon de Vincennes, en 1777, puis à la prison royale d'Aix. Son procès n'aboutira qu'au paiement d'une modeste amende.Mais il retourne à Vincennes, avant d'être transféré à la Bastille, en 1784. In 1987 a young Beth Giesman was trying to figure out what she was going to do with the rest of her life. A chance meeting with Mark Goodrich on a campus visit at Vincennes University and learning about a profession that was new to her, turned in to over 30 years working as an athletic trainer. Small University, small classes but big AT experiences are what Vincennes offered as well as young enthusiastic mentor in Goodrich. Beth excelled in this environment. From Vincennes she transferred to Indiana State and was the first woman to work men's basketball as a student athletic trainer. Graduating in 1992 she took a job near her home in Fort Wayne with Orthopedics NorthEast and their athletic training outreach program. She held various roles in the ONE system, Head Athletic Trainer at University of Saint Francis, Assistant Athletic Trainer and Assistant Strength and Condition Coach at IPFW, Team leader for Performance One, ONE performance enhancement division and then finally 21 years ago starting out as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Huntington University and eventually becoming the Head Athletic Trainer.Beth was most recently honored as the Crossroads League Athletic Trainer of the year for 2023-2024. She also was the 1991 Mel Blickenstaff Outstanding Senior Athletic Trainer at Indiana State and the 1994 Outstanding Alumni Award from Vincennes University. She resides in the Huntington area with her husband, Terry and their 3 sons.Mark Goodrich is a staff physical therapist with Pro-Rehab in Vincennes, IN. He was an Athletic Trainer and faculty member at Vincennes for over 30 years. He lives outside of Vincennes with his wife Jennifer.

Une mobilisation mémorable pour rendre hommage aux victimes, montrer l'unité du peuple français et soutenir la liberté d'expression.Dix ans plus tard, la France se souvient et rend un nouvel hommage ce mardi aux 17 personnes qui ont perdu la vie, lors de cette série d'attentats, qui ont fait basculer le pays dans une nouvelle période marquée par le terrorisme. Greenhouses – five tropical greenhouses with plants from across the world. 9. Maze – yes, you read that right, a maze in central Paris. Amazing. 10. Natural Science Museum – weird and wonderful. The displays will leave you spell-bound. 11. Bateaux Mouches – avoid walking too much and getting tired. The most thrilling and beautiful way to see the best of Paris. 12. Pony Riding – in Parc Monceau, Luxembourg Gardens and the Champ de Mars, which also offers go-karting. 13. Jardin d'Acclimatation – not a garden, but an amusement park. Fairground rides and rollercoasters galore. 14. Big Zoo – in the heart of the Bois de Vincennes. Exceptionally good, for a city zoo. 15. Ice skating at the Grand Palais – returning after a long closure. Is there a more beautiful place to ice skate in the world? 16. Ground Control – not especially central, but worth the commute. A huge abandoned train depot that houses diverse food stands, with interesting shops and games. 17. Comptoir Général – a roomy, buzzing canal-side club by night and restaurant by day. Keep your eyes peeled for the pirate ship. 18.
