Le groupe britannique de metalcore est à l'honneur avec la sortie imminente de son onzième album "The Sky, The Earth and All That's In Between". L'album de la semaine est "Blindness" de The Murder Capital, enregistré entre Dublin et Los Angeles, dont "That Feeling" reflète l'énergie post-punk du groupe. La reprise du soir met en lumière Rage Against The Machine, qui revisite "The Ghost of Tom Joad" de Bruce Springsteen en version rap-rock. We're going back to classic movies this week, and spending some time with John Ford. The Grapes of Wrath (1940) is based on the 1938 Steinbeck novel and follows a group of rural Oklahomans as they search for a better life in the west. Henry Fonda stars as Tom Joad, a former prisoner trying to better his life and take care of his family. Will Isaac like this movie, or will it be a snooze-fest for him? Steven Spielberg is the most successful director of his generation and the highest-grossing director of all time: his films have taken more than $10 billion worldwide. From Jaws to E.T. and Jurassic Park to Schindler's List, his storytelling has captivated audiences around the world.Steven grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he started making films as a young boy. In 1958 he made a short Western which won him a Boy Scout merit badge. He screened it to his entire Scout troop and their laughter and applause got him hooked on film making. In 1971 he directed a television movie called Duel about a motorist who is pursued by a murderous truck driver. The film attracted good reviews from critics, and before the age of 30, Steven had directed his first global hit: Jaws grossed $471 million worldwide and is credited as heralding the arrival of the blockbuster era. He now says Jaws was ‘a free pass into my future.'He has won three Academy Awards, and has received eight nominations for best director. The Fabelmans, his most recent film, is a semi-fictionalised account of his own coming of age, drawing on his film-making experiences as a child.Steven is married to the actor Kate Capshaw, who starred in his film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and they have seven children.DISC ONE: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance by Gene Pitney DISC TWO: Fugue in G minor, BMW 578 – “The Little” arranged by Leopold Stokowski, composed by J.S Bach, performed by Philadelphia Orchestra and conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin DISC THREE: Michelle by The Beatles DISC FOUR: What the World Needs Now Is Love by Jackie DeShannon DISC FIVE: Come Fly with Me by Frank Sinatra DISC SIX: The Ghost of Tom Joad by Bruce Springsteen DISC SEVEN: Somewhere, composed by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, performed by Reri Grist DISC EIGHT: Coolhand by Buzzy LeeBOOK CHOICE: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck LUXURY ITEM: H-8 Bolex camera CASTAWAY'S FAVOURITE: Coolhand by Buzzy LeePresenter Lauren Laverne Producer Paula McGinley

Jérôme Colin et Miguel Allo traversent les États-Unis d'Est en Ouest. De New York à Los Angeles. Directed by John Ford and released in 1940, The Grapes of Wrath is a film based on the Steinbeck novel of the same name. Following a fictional Tom Joad and his family the movie follows their move from their home in Oklahoma to California in search for work. Drawn by flyers advertising jobs during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression the hope of a brighter future the flyers offer is too good to pass up. A film told through wonderful performances and rich and beautiful black and white photography, it shines brightly as a nod to a classic novel.
After achieving massive success in the 1970s and 80s, Bruce Springsteen began the 1990s with the release of two albums in 1992, "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town," which showcased a departure from his work with the E Street Band. Like with his 1987 album "Tunnel of Love," Springsteen explored more personal themes at the end of his marriage and relocation from New Jersey to Los Angeles. Despite mixed critical reception, the albums produced notable singles like "Human Touch" and "Better Days." While some wrote off Springsteen as stale and out of touch, he returned on the soundtrack to the movie Philadelphia with the haunting and sparse "Streets of Philadelphia." He followed that up in 1995 with "The Ghost of Tom Joad," a stark, acoustic folk album that harkened back to the style of "Nebraska" and focused on social and economic issues, earning him critical acclaim and a Grammy Award for the title track. This period, though less commercially dominant than the 1980s, demonstrated Springsteen's versatility and commitment to evolving as an artist, and the 1998 four-disc compilation Tracks made up of 66-outtakes from the earliest years of his career up to the 90s showcased his hidden gems and concert-only favorites, leading up to his induction into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1999. The Ghost of Tom Joad". Plus, they talk about the types of classes at Margaritaville High School and ask, “Are hammocks more trouble than they're worth?”
After getting it figured out what time of the year it is (year's end - Gregorian calendar, year's beginning - lectionary calendar), we agree it is Christmastide. Odd word, “Christmastide”, but as of this recording, it is the 4th Day of Christmas, so the Christmas tide is still rising. As always we begin with random talk about bagels and smoothly segue into hefty theological discussions and conversations about lists. This is the season of lists. The best of the year, the worst of the year, and more. We look at some of those often overlooked lists. Here are some links for what we discussed:Google Search TrendsWorst Things to Spill in Your CarVarieties of Axe FragrancesAnd the inventor of auto-tune, Dr Andy Hildebrand(Apologies to Botticelli's Nativitiy, thanks PhotoShop Generative Fill AI)
Adam Scott Aukerman go track-by-track through Da Boss's eleventh studio album, The Ghost of Tom Joad, in addition to looking back on why Bruce reassembled the Edible Street Band to record new songs for his Greatest Hits album. They also discuss how Bruce came to record Streets of Philadelphia, the invention of valets, flying on Con Air, and the filmography of Richard Benjamin.
Cody and Craig resume their award-winning podcast (what awards, you ask?) after several months. And just for nostalgia, we go back to the 2018 introduction with Tom Joad telling what he's been thinking about. We also play around a little with some new artificial intelligence tools to help summarize our conversation. See the podcast write up.

Dem boyz are back this week and are traveling back to the 80s to drop the needle on 'Born in the USA' by Bruce Springsteen. His most popular achievement, which threw off seven Top Ten hits and became one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has been certified 17× Platinum by the RIAA, having sold over 17 million units in the United States, and over 30 million copies worldwide. Born in the U.S.A. topped the charts in nine different countries, including the United Kingdom and Australia, becoming his most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling albums of all time. It is a pristine and precise record whose synth pads, massive drums, and front-and-center vocals represent the defining qualities of the 80s mainstream rock production. With strikingly somatic sounds, the music and melodies begin to feel alive. Most of the songs were recorded live by the band in just a few takes, with Springsteen shouting cues and can be heard whooping and hollering off mic. Fascinatingly, Born in the U.S.A. did become a pivotal moment in Springsteen's career, but perhaps not in the way he may have wanted: he arguably didn't make another good album until The Ghost of Tom Joad 10 years later, another mostly acoustic project, and then not for another eight years until The Rising in 2002. The records in this middle period found Springsteen slowly drowning into the pop sound he had pioneered on Born in the U.S.A., often creating cloying and forgettable works. Born in the U.S.A. is not just Bruce Springsteen's biggest-selling LP, but one of the most popular recordings ever released. The anthemic title track is a song so intrinsically woven into American culture that most BBQ's and get-togethers still jam it to this day and are likely to be passed down from generation to generation for as long as BBQ's and get-togethers exist. Growing up outside of Boston, multi-instrumentalist David Hamburger first picked up a guitar at the age of 12. Through his first guitar teacher he was exposed to bluegrass music, and at home his father was turning him on to Tin Pan Alley pop. Through his teens, Hamburger was also becoming more interested in blues and jazz, incorporating the various styles into his playing. His interest in blues was further stoked while attending Wesleyan University when a friend taught him to play slide. A stint at Manhattan's School of Music where he was studying jazz composition didn't last, as Hamburger left the graduate program to play with a then-unknown Freedy Johnston. Hamburger was also playing with an R&B band as well as performing solo, finally gathering some of his favorite local musicians to help him record King of the Brooklyn Delta in 1995. Extensive touring helped him to build a live following around New York and New England, while he continued to contribute guitar, dobro, and pedal steel to the recordings of others. Indigo Rose, recorded in a little more than a week, arrived in 1999.As a solo artist, David has appeared at Merlefest, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Old Settlers Music Festival, and venues including Passim, Cafe Lena and the Cactus Cafe. He has opened for Dave Van Ronk, Jorma Kaukonen, Rory Block and Roy Book Binder and jammed onstage with Duke Robillard, Gatemouth Brown and Tinsley Ellis. As a sideman and session musician, David has recorded with Freedy Johnston, toured the U.S. with Joan Baez, and appeared with Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen on Springsteen's remake of “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”David is also the author of two dozen instructional books and videos, including the award-winning Beginning Blues Guitar, which has sold over 100,000 copies and been released in a second edition after 20 continuous years in print. We talk all things acoustic blues, he even whips out a stunning sounding Martin and demos a bit for us so, not one to miss! Steven Spielberg is the most successful director of his generation and the highest-grossing director of all time: his films have taken more than $10 billion worldwide. From Jaws to E.T. and Jurassic Park to Schindler's List, his storytelling has captivated audiences around the world. Steven grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he started making films as a young boy. He now says Jaws was ‘a free pass into my future.' He has won three Academy Awards, and has received eight nominations for best director. The Fabelmans, his most recent film, is a semi-fictionalised account of his own coming of age, drawing on his film-making experiences as a child. Steven is married to the actor Kate Capshaw, who starred in his film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and they have seven children. C.V.'s 10 to Check Out Podcast Curtis and Aaron Vaughn came up with the idea for this podcast. The concept for this podcast is to give information and opinions about ten songs each month that may fly under the radar for most listeners of music. Also, we will play a snippet of each song and ask the listener to comment to us through one of our social media outlets so we can get different opinions on what you think about these songs and what they mean to you. The opinions of the music selected are only the opinions of Aaron and Curtis and may not reflect what the artist had in mind. They believe that is the beauty of music. It can mean so many different things to so many different people. In short, Curtis came up with this quote to describe the show: “Sharing the joy of music in hopes of bringing back old memories or helping listeners discover unfamiliar artists, bands, or songs that they might want to look further into. At the same time, helping out Veterans and their families with donations along the way."Songs for this month are:1. Another Day, Another Dollar - Wynn Stewart2. Alone and Forsaken - Hank Williams & The Drifting Cowboys3. Four-O-Thirty Three - George Jones4. Ben Dewberry's Last Run - Jimmie Rodgers5. Bob and Brad kick off a mini-series of films from director John Ford with 1940's The Grapes of Wrath. Based on one of the "Great American Novels," this movie features iconic lines and performances, though at least one of our hosts thinks that star Henry Fonda may actually be less-than-believable as Tom Joad. Hosted by Andrew Quinn and Darren Mooney, with special guests Aoife Martin, Jason Coyle and Ronan Doyle, The 250 is a (mostly) weekly trip through some of the best (and worst) movies ever made, as voted for by Internet Movie Database Users. New episodes are released every Saturday at 6pm GMT. This time, John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath. Released from prison after serving four years, Tom Joad returns to his family's farm in Oklahoma to discover that it has been utterly changed by the Great Depression. He joins his family on a road trip westward, towards the new opportunities waiting for them in California. However, the Joads very quickly discover that their push westward may not deliver them to a promised land. At time of recording, it was ranked 232nd on the list of the best movies of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
It is about time that we move on to the mother of all conspiracies, the green revolution and the total control of the world's food production. Our story conveniently starts with a small semi-dwarf grain, stolen from the experimental labs in Japan in 1945. A grain and a crime which will take us on a journey to the US, Mexico, Malaysia, India, Rwanda indeed anywhere in the world where plants can be grown. It's a story of industrial espionage, assassination, the covert funding of extremists, the Rockefellers, Ford, the World Bank, IG Farben, Monsanto, Bayer, the United Nations, Nobel Peace Prize winners, Gates and the other technocrats, Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Chem, Big f**ing everything. John's Steinbeck's 1939 tale of an "Oakie" family who crosses Route 66 seeking to escape the Dust Bowl only to discover California isn't the paradise it's been advertised as is one of the most iconic Great American Novels in our literary history. Its impact was profound and immediate: rarely has a novel been so viciously denounced simply for promoting the belief that all Americans deserve to make a living. But the novel has also been celebrated as a testament to democratic protest, inspiring folks songs by Woody Guthrie and Bruce Springsteen that have in turn been covered by later generations of musicians such as Rage Against the Machine. This episode explores what makes the novel such a fan favorite, as well as the pros and cons of tackling politics in literature. We examine the curious role of Steinbeck's intercalary chapters, which, alternating with the story of the displaced Joad family, raise their plight to mythic levels. We also dig deep into the journalistic inspiration for the novel as well as its Hollywood legacy with John Ford's classic 1940 adaptation.
The second chapter of my audiobook of The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. We are introduced to the principal character Tom Joad, a prisoner on parole who is trying to get back to his parent's farm. He waits outside a highway diner on the sideboard of a truck, and tries to hitch his way home with the talkative driver.Get SurfShark and protect yourself online todayVPN: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=926&aff_id=20389Antivirus: https://get.surfshark.net/aff_c?offer_id=934&aff_id=20389Get data brokers to stop selling your information with:Incogni: https://get.incogni.io/aff_c?offer_id=1219&aff_id=20389Thank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreadsSupport the showThank you so much for listening, if you want to support the me go to any of these links :)*Social*SHOPIFY: https://the-essential-reads.myshopify.com/INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/theessentialreadsTWITTER: http://twitter.com/isaacbirchall98Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/theessentialreads
Jay kicks us off with the story behind “I Am The Moon”, a four album exploration of Layla's perspective from the old Arab story “Layla & Majnun”. Then we move onto the controversy of the past week. Ticketmaster has rolled out its dynamic pricing system just in time for Bruce Springsteen tickets to go on sale. Tickets to some shows have gone for as much as $5000 due to demand. Most of that money is going to Bruce (instead of the scalper that bought it a reasonable price and resold it to the highest bidder), which begs the question: Why does this still feel unfair? We discuss…Song: Tedeschi Trucks Band - “Hold That Line”Nick has a bit? Nick has a bit! “Show Must Go On” is about bands that are so inspired by their founder's vision that they continue playing as a group after the founder's passing. This week on our inaugural edition, we learn about Sun Ra Arkestra. Sun Ra, born in Birmingham AL in 1914, had a brilliant ear and took to the piano at a very early age. Growing up an African American musician in the deep south during the 1920s was incredibly difficult and, early in his college years, he had a vision of ascending to Saturn where Africans could live with the freedom and self-agency that they could not attain in many parts of the Western world. He was an incredibly prolific artist, performer and philosopher. His lifelong project, Sun Ra Arkestra, lives on to this day to keep his vision alive.Songs:Sun Ra Arkestra - “Somebody Else's Idea”Sun Ra - “I Am Strange / I Am An Instrument”Greg gives us the story behind a recent gig that The Resilient performed for AFSCME at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Hired to perform a handful of songs, a request came in to play some Springsteen. Greg recalled a Bruce song that Tom Morello taught the Music Corps Band back at Walter Reed Hospital called “Ghost of Tom Joad”. After playing the show, Greg had a friend send Morello a clip of their performance and heard back…which kind of means we have Tom Morello's cell number now! More importantly, The Resilient are amazing and we were excited to hear about their latest outing!Songs: The Resilient - “Ghost of Tom Joad”

Today, I'm going to make a few people really happy because this is the Bruce Springsteen Niche Episode that more than a handful of you have been waiting for. The episode where I explain the long-lasting appeal of Bruce Springsteen as told through select Springsteen tracks arranged in order of progressive maturity of narrative voice. The journey takes us from frustrated youth in a small town, to emergent adult getting into trouble, an adult desire for love and reconciliation with the past, deepening radicalization as the hardships of life are revealed to be so often caused by oppressive systems of class and hierarchy, and finally a swell of hope and resilience as a more mature voice of elderhood emerges. Features 15 of his 60+ albums. I have created this playlist in Tidal but I'm going to add a list of each track and the specific album it appears on - because the specific recording matters. This is a musician who is known for tireless touring having played over 2,600 concerts since he signed with Columbia Records in 1972. But of course, he had a career before that - Bruce Springsteen has been the front man of a rock and roll band since his first gig as a 17 year old with his band called The Castiles in 1965 and he's never had any other job since. Never had a workin man job. Not a day. But his dad did. His dad had lots of jobs, it was hard for him to keep jobs. Partially because of declining industrial jobs around New Jersey intensifying in the mid-60s, but also because Bruce's dad struggled with alcoholism and undiagnosed depression and schizophrenia, and that became a defining feature of Bruce's life and his music, wrestling with intergenerational demons and the mirroring of one family's life in the larger decline of America as a country and an idea at the end of the 20th century. Today's episode is all about the first of the two 20th century waves in the folk music movement and how that movement rallied people behind some big themes to help them fight for social justice. As a people, Americans are inclined towards optimism and a belief that if things aren't working, they can be fixed. How improvement is defined, which issues get the focus, and how those improvements are managed comes down to party philosophy. Practically speaking, America has been a two-party system with a number of other minor parties that represent the people that don't line up with everyone else. On the ‘left', we've had three parties, progressives, socialists and communists. Woody Guthrie, and a number of ‘folkie' musicians like Pete Seeger, Josh White, Burl Ives and others, did something that hadn't been done before in American music; they used it as a weapon against the things they thought were wrong in the world. For instance, Woody Guthrie's guitar had the words “This machine kills fascists” on it.They taught a nation to sing powerful songs about hope – Woody Guthrie did that – and when you do, you may sow the seeds of change in future generations, like the way Guthrie stood as Bob Dylan's musical mentor. But music is just the drum beat that the rest of us have to march to. If we don't like how things are going, we're still Americans. We can still change it. We need to act on it. Ghandi said “Be the change you want to see in the world.” When we do, we'll see that just like things improved in working conditions, and minimum wage laws, and many other ways, the world can become a better place. Our country belongs to the people, not the tiny fraction on top. And this is a country that promises equality, but that equality is something we have to continuously protect TracksWoody Guthrie: This Land Is Your LandPete Seeger - Talking Union BluesBurl Ives: Wayfaring StrangerJosh White - TroubleThis Train is Bound for GloryWoody Guthrie - Do Re MiWoody Guthrie - 1913 MassacreThe Almanac Singers - Which Side Are You On?Woody Guthrie - All You Fascists Bound to LoseThe Almanac Singers - The Sinking of the Good Reuben JamesPete Seeger - Deliver the Goods60 Minutes with Charles Kuralt - Interview with Alan LomaxCBS Radio Network - HootenanyAlan Lomax Interviews Muddy WatersMuddy Waters - My Home is in the DeltaMáire Ní Shúilleabháin, Ballylicky, Co.
