Grace Rouvray thought she knew what grief was. Then her best friend Katie died. In this deeply moving conversation with Holly Wainwright, Grace shares the story behind her memoir Is It Too Early To Bitch? — a love letter to the friendship that shaped her life, and the devastating loss that changed it forever. Grace and Katie met at drama school in 2009 and quickly became inseparable. Through awkward share houses, terrible dates, career highs, creative projects and countless late-night phone calls, they became each other's person. The kind of friendship that can feel every bit as profound, intimate and life-defining as a romantic relationship. Then, in 2021, Katie died suddenly at just 34 years old. Grace reflects on navigating unimaginable grief during lockdown, what it means to lose the person who knows you best, and the unexpected ways loss reshaped her understanding of friendship, family and herself. This episode explores the bond between female friends, the reality of life after loss, and why some of the greatest love stories aren't romantic at all. Bestselling novelist Holly Ringland on writing from joy instead of fear, the toolkit she built to meet the inner critic with self-compassion, and finding the first true sentence of her debut after decades of silence.   We discuss Why the pain of not writing eventually outweighs the pain of writing. What grief and loss can crack open in a writer that nothing else can. How the first true line of a novel can arrive once you stop listening to the reasons you can't write it. A bullet-point approach to plotting that protects the nervous system from the blank page. What to ask for from early readers, and what to refuse. The distinction between self-doubt and the inner critic, and why it matters. Meeting the inner critic with an equal and opposite internalised force. Breaking procrastination by making the next step impossibly small. Fiction as the lie that tells the truth truest.   Resources & Links

Kayla Jade didn’t plan to become one of the most recognisable women on Australian TikTok. She didn’t plan to become a sex worker, or a mum, or a viral sensation. But somehow, she’s all of those things and more. In this episode of No Filter, Kate Langbroek sits down with Kayla to talk about the story that wasn’t supposed to be told. The one that includes a man named Peggy Sue, an A-Lister who asked for too much, falling for one of her clients and that infamous meet up with Drake. It's deep dive into the wild, unfiltered life Kayla’s built - one storytime at a time. From her rise on OnlyFans to becoming a full-service sex worker, from co-parenting in the Gold Coast hinterland to managing fame, surgery, shame and survival, Kayla speaks with extraordinary candour about everything she’s lived through and what she’s still learning. He's best known for his 2018 novel, Boy Swallows Universe, which was adapted into an award-winning Netflix series last year. His new book, Gravity Let Me Go, promises to be more auto-biographical, as it tells the story of a character in crisis as he works to tell more stories. "It's so funny that as I'm talking about a book that is all about that, that I am inside the busiest period of my life...the whole story of Gravity Let Me Go is this journo who keeps obsessing about the story of his lifetime and he's in danger of missing an even bigger scoop, and that's something that's involving his wife and kids, and that's the story of my life." A young woman is found dead in the country land of 1920's Australia. Was it murder? Suicide? An accident? The police investigation into this mystery becomes a deeper dive into the lives of people a century ago, where the technology, human rights reforms, and economic safety nets of today did not exist. Sylvia Lerch's historical fiction, Grasp The Nettle: Australian Country Life in the 1920s Era, is her debut novel at age 80, and it draws upon many aspects her family had experienced back then. The moving work reveals to the reader the challenges of living life in a time and place that was not kind to many, especially women and the gender diverse. How did people cope with the harsh obstacles of trying to live a meaningful, happy, healthy, love-filled life a century ago?Grasp The Nettle reveals what those living in Australia country in 1920s had to confront. The world was so different then, from its lack of modern technology to few defenses against diseases that today are well under control. Women were not allowed to be financially independent, many were in loveless marriages, and a lack of reliable contraception kept them overwhelmed by more kids than they can handle.Lerch, an octogenarian who never used an ATM, doesn't own a cell phone, lives in a home without Internet service, and doesn't know from social media, lives a nearly tech-free lifestyle similar to that of those who lived in the 1920's.“My book also shows the powerful role of the church in the 1920's,” says Lerch. “The church was the loom for the fabric of society, including education, mental health therapy, charity for the needy, births, deaths, and marriages. It was a meeting place not just for religious ceremonies, but for the conducting of the business of one's life.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
