Dave Dreiwitz was born in NY to traditional jazz musician parents, Richard and Barbara Dreiwitz. His father plays trombone and his mother plays tuba. In 1983, at the age of seventeen, Dave joined the Hoboken, New Jersey based psych rock band Tiny Lights, his first professional band out of high school. In 1986, while attending Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, he met fellow schoolmate and drummer Scott Byrne and through a love of similar music, they started the rock band Instant Death in 1991. Instant Death dissolved with the passing of Byrne in 2005. In 1997, Dave joined Ween. Dave also performs in The Marco Benevento Trio, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, The Dean Ween Group and the Led Zeppelin instrumental tribute band, Bustle in Your Hedgerow. He occasionally plays bass with Chris Harford and the Band of Changes, Old Rugged Sauce as well as in his own drum and bass duo, Crescent Moon, which features Dreiwitz on bass and vocals alongside various guest drummers. Crescent Moon drummers have included Claude Coleman of Ween, Tomato from the Sound of Urchin, Eric Slick of Dr. Dog and Joe Russo of Furthur.
Steve is back with Ryan and J.P., and the guys discuss Freddy Peralta's role in the Milwaukee Brewers rotation with the looming return of Zach Davies, Corey Knebel's meltdown and whether he can be trusted in leverage situations going forward, and an update on the 2018 Season Prop Bet standings. Co-hosts Andrew James (@OneWhoSeesDimly) and Eric D. (@HopSnobbery) and joined by Mel Allen (@TheRealVoiceMel) to launch Episode 005 of Riff On, talking daughters and family. Andrew has a seven year old and ten year old daughter, Mel a four year old, nine year old and twenty-two year old and Eric D. has an almost sixteen year old, who lives in Los Angeles with her mom, a four and a half year old daughter and an almost seven year old son. Andrew, Eric D. and Mel immediately go down a rabbit hole where Eric D. brings up John Mayer, Dead and Company and Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Andrew reels it back in to talk about passing on the love of music to their daughters. Terrible twos was nothing. Threenager is really what it is happening with children nowadays, including the eyeroll and the fussiness that is feeding the kids. Passing on music to the children is something that all three hosts take pride in with their girls. Andrew's girls want to hear 'Stitches' nowadays, but they took great love to The Beatles way back in. Mel taught his oldest daughter to play guitar and some classic guitars and learned that her modern music didn't translate, so she took to older music. Trying not raise an a**hole, Eric D. asks his co-hosts if they feel like they've ever been to hard on their children. Mel recollects about his punishment of taking the door off the hinges after warning his oldest about door slamming. Andrew talks about sending this daughters's friends home early during a play date. Eric D. talks about taking away bedtime stories, despite his love of reading to the kids before bed. How do you get your children to listen? Eric D. is struggling with his kids. Andrew James has been shutting down the WiFi on his daughters to keep them from their YouTube and technology. The girls have grown up around technology, including streaming services and not watching commercials. Cord cutting has led children to not knowing what products are due to lack of traditional advertisement. Modern punishment has turned into "I'm taking away your WiFi" as a consquence. When does the need for entertaining the kids stop? When they get car keys? So, who is going to teach the kids how to drive? The mom? The dad? So, what happens when we all have self-driving cars? The kids are constantly trying to teach Eric D. patience. How do you handle patience with the kids? Mel says that if he needs to say it twice, he asks the kids to stop and look at him and tell him what he just said and if they don't, things just stop. Andrew's hardest time with patience is when his daughter's get a bit mouthy with their mom. Eric's biggest issue is having to repeat himself due to their lack of listening. Public education and daycare is discussed. Eric D. remembers his first grade teacher spanking another teach, and Mel recollects a principal in Richmond spanking. Were you spanked? Wooden spoons, the ruler and the switch were all used. Andrew James says he is transgenerational and says that every generation coming after them is not as good as their generation. The society is connected way more than it ever has been, so what is the concern over social media and the information we put out there? As a sales guy, Eric D. makes it a point of putting information out there. Do your children have a cell phone? Andrew James oldest has one and both of Mel's oldest had phones at the age of nine. Phones lead to everyone having a camera, yet we don't develop pictures anymore. So, are we going to have yearbooks in the future? Andrew James hosts The Local Haunt on Facebook. Eric D. also hosts the Let's Fix Construction podcast. www.LFCpodcast.com Please give us a follow on Twitter or Instagram at @RiffOnPodcast and a like on Facebook at www.facebook.com/RiffOnPodcast/
Here's hoping that this set of fine early Dead music will help warm your bones in the middle of this cold cold January... We continue with the band's performance from January 16th, 1970 at Springer's Inn in Portland Oregon. While we start out with a Cumberland Blues that is a bit shortened, this tape more than make sup for it with early versions of classic songs that are delightful to me as I listen to their early development. 'Easy Wind' is a classic, as is the wonderful 'Dire Wolf'... Because the set is a bit short, I've included a cut from a recently released set from one of my favorite bands, Joe Russo's Almost Dead.. this cover of Cream Puff War just seems to fit in perfectly here and I hope you enjoy it.. the rest of this wonderful set is available on archive.org.. Grateful Dead Springer's Inn Portland, OR 1/16/70 - Friday part 2 Cumberland Blues [#4:13#] % Me And My Uncle [#2:52] > Dire Wolf [4:10];[1:00] ; Uncle John's Band [6:51];[0:45] ; Easy Wind [8:00];[2:15] ; Cryptical Envelopment [1:48] > Drums [0:49] > Space [0:59] > Drums [3:54] > The Other One [8:32] > Cryptical Envelopment [1:16] > Cosmic Charlie [6:#19];[0:12] Joe Russo's Almost Dead Brooklyn Bowl, 12/29/2016 Cream Puff War You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011918.mp3 thanks so much for your support!!
It won't be long before Mardi Gras is here so I decided to bring you one of the better Mardi Gras shows the band performed in their later years. This is from February 23rd, 1993 at Oakland California. Part of me wanted to only play the second set, which features an excellent collaboration with Ornette Coleman, however the completest in me demanded the entire show, so this week I'm featuring set 1, which contains some nice highlights as well as the premier of Phil Lesh's version of 'Broken Arrow'. I quite enjoy Garcia's solo in Loser as well, and the unusual 'Johnny B. Goode' set closer. I decided to also include in this week's Deadpod part of a wonderful set by Joe Russo's Almost Dead. This comes from their performance on 12/30/16 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY. They simply tear up this Viola Lee Blues .. I hope you enjoy it!!! Grateful Dead Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 2/23/93 - Tuesday One Cold Rain And Snow ; Wang Dang Doodle ; Loser ; Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again ; Broken Arrow (first time played) ; Way To Go Home ; Johnny B. Happy Thanksgiving my friends! If you've listened to the Deadpod for awhile you know I enjoy bringing you acoustic music around the holidays - this year is no different and I think I've got an excellent show lined up for you. First off, one of the famous acoustic shows form the fall of 1980, this comes to us from the Warfield in San Francisco on October 4th, 1980. There's not a bad song in this set.. but some of my favorites are the 'Race Is On', 'It Must Have Been The Roses', 'Dark Hollow' and 'To Lay Me Down'.. the set-ending 'Ripple' still brings chills.. Following this wonderful set, we have a marvelous performance of the complete Terrapin Suite from some great musicians honoring the Dead tradition today - Joe Russo's Almost Dead. A little over a month ago they performed an acoustic Terrapin Station that surely deserves to be heard. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have..... Grateful Dead Warfield Theatre San Francisco, CA 10/4/80 - Saturday One Deep Elem Blues [4:13] ; The Race Is On [2:53] ; It Must Have Been The Roses [5:48] ; Monkey And The Engineer [2:48] ; Rosalie McFall [3:06] ; Dark Hollow [3:13] ; To Lay Me Down [8:34] ; On The Road Again ; Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie [5:34] ; Ripple [4:30] Joe Russo's Almost Dead Brooklyn Bowl, Brooklyn NY 10/7/16 Terrapin Station Suite (Acoustic) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112516.mp3 I'm grateful to all of my friends who listen to the Deadpod each week and allow me the chance to spread the light and love contained within. thank you .. -the professor
Seth and Rob sit down with guitarist Tom Hamilton and discuss his work with Brothers Past, American Babies, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Billy and The Kids and other groups. Tom explains the various ways some of these bands approach Grateful Dead music, and relates his experiences working with the surviving members of The Grateful Dead. Tom also reveals that Louis CKs eulogy of Robin Williams served as an influence for the creation of what would become the American Babies' fantastic new cd, "An Epic Battle Between Light & Dark." Also discussed are Tom's experience with depression, how he feels stand up comedians are "today's Shakespeare," how his improvisational goal is to compose new and great songs on the spot and his grossly underappreciated/slightly dysfunctional band, Brothers Past. Sports fans might enjoy the comparisons between athletic and musical teamwork and fans of obscenity will surely be delighted by the various uses of the f-word. Tom also takes us to the early days of Joe Russo's Almost Dead and what it's like playing in a band with the drummer serving as a point man. He also performs his first-ever a solo reading of "Bring It In Close" from the aforementioned American Babies release, "An Epic Battle Between Light & Dark."
