When we first spoke with Justin Dry five years ago, he was riding the proverbial wave of success with his start-up online wine retailer. Since then, Vinomofo has matured into a multimillion-dollar company with a growing focus on overseas expansion. How has he maintained the company's ethos of “no BS and no bow ties” while expanding his mofo tribe? In Part 2 of the Vinomofo story, Justin Dry shares some of the biggest lessons he's learned as CEO of an expanding empire. To join this club you have to make a pledge: “There is no right or wrong, there is only what I like and don't like.” In 2011, in an industry full of pretention, Justin Dry and Andre Eikmeier founded an online wine community with down-to-earth ideals. By July 2016 Vinomofo had 450,000 members and set its sights on overseas markets. In this first part of the Vinomofo story, Justin Dry explains how Vinomofo fought off the big wine sellers by offering some of the very best wines at great prices – and built a passionate following in the process. Justin Dry lost his house not once, but twice, before he learned to trust his gut. With each loss, the robust Vinomofo founder has picked himself up off the cellar floor and come at it again from a new angle. Dry has aged wisely. He's grown from the classic idea-machine entrepreneur, through record funding rounds and tough decisions, to responding to crises with exactly the right kind of genius to pull his premium wine delivery business through. Now that VinoMofo's matured through “the difficult teenage years”, Dry's full of ideas for the future. His new role as Chief Entrepreneur is perfectly paired with his enterprising spirit. So what's next for the irreverent wine boss? And what can he teach you about come-backs after setbacks? +++ Curveball is a production of Deadset Studios. Justin Dry’s business career is very much like a good bottle of wine. The culmination of years of meticulously mastering a craft, and blending that knowledge into something that improves with age. In this episode of Disciplinn, Justin covers the highs, and numerous lows of getting to where he is now, CEO of Vinomofo, a great brand and a great showcase for how one business model can be brilliantly be adapted to dominate different verticals. This episode should be mandatory listening for any entrepreneur; success, failure, capital raising, failed deals, successful M&A, buy back and then master of ones domain. It’s an incredibly journey. Enjoy our discussion.
**** Re-releasing this one for something different as a very big, exciting guest had to postpone last minute this week AND I realised some of you have only just joined and may not have caught up on our back catalogue! Also realised how much I've learnt about audio plus we recorded this in a very noisy hotel, but it's still a zinger so I hope you enjoy! **** I mean, what words really are there to do this week's guest justice and adequately explain the feelings you can only imagine I felt being lucky enough to sit down with him for a chat about seizing the yay. As I've been bombarding you about on socials, I'm sure most of you already know I met the inimitable Gary Vaynerchuck last week when he was briefly in Melbourne to launch the epic collaboration between his new company, Empathy Wines, and Aussie wine legends, Vinomofo, thanks to another amazing Seize the Yay guest and Vinomofo founder, Justin Dry. Ahead of every curve with his astonishing intuition, Gary Vee has gone from former Soviet Union migrant to worldwide entrepreneurial sensation embracing e-commerce before the term was coined taking his family wine business from a $3million to $60million turnover when he took over the reins and producing content prolifically since YouTube was just four months old. The accolades and achievements since then are too many to list, but most importantly not as relevant to list as you might expect despite him having since founded VaynerMedia as well as investing early in many of the world's biggest beasts a la Facebook, Snapchat, Venmo etc. Not having been quite sure what to expect, it was so delightful to be met with an incredibly humble, hardworking and honest person focused more on redefining success away from financial metrics and external approval and towards happiness and love – he is definitely seizing his yay and I'm SO grateful he shared some of it on the show. Full video will follow shortly too! Ladies and gentleman, Gary Vee… + See show notes here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

At the age of 12, Justin Dry saw his entrepreneur father lose everything. Now, Justin is the co-founder and CEO of one of Australia’s fastest growing companies, Vinomofo. He joins us for our second COVID-19 ‘lockdown’ episode, chatting to us from his home office at the dining room table, with handy access to the wine fridge and his 4-month-old daughter Matisse in the next room. Justin and his brother-in-law Andre Eikmeier launched Vinomofo from their Adelaide garage in 2011, and since then it has grown to over $50 million in annual revenue, 500,000 members and operations across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Earlier generations of Justin’s family planted the first vines in the Barossa, so wine practically flows through his veins, but it took a couple of turns on the small business merry-go-round before he and Andre hit on a winning idea. Justin opens up about those earlier business experiences and how they helped build Vinomofo – as well as the business decision that saw him repeating his father’s mistakes. We also chat about Justin’s love for self-motivation and forward planning, how he thinks COVID-19 will reshape the wine industry, and his passion for island holidays. Hi – this is Julie Masters and you’re listening to The Next Right Thing – a mini-series from The Inside Influence Team. Designed to provide some actionable certainty in uncertain times. Specifically – and the situation we’re all facing right now – the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lock down. The idea behind this series is to go out to some of the most popular guests from past episodes of Inside Influence – and ask them one question: ‘What are the most important things you’re focusing on right now (tools, ideas, strategies) - or advising your clients to focus on - that you know for sure work in uncertain times?’The intention being that somewhere in there, from these incredible minds, you might be able to find inspiration for your next right thing – a point of certainty amidst the uncertainty. In this episode I speak with… Justin Dry – Co-Founder + CEO of Vino Mofo, an online wine retailer and community that began in a garage - and then a campervan - and then became one of the fastest growing online wine retailers on the planet. With an annual turnover of more than $50 million – and collaborations with power houses that include wine rockstar Gary Vaynerchuck.Justin and his team has done what many would say was impossible – and the challenge that so many are facing right now. Which is take a category that previously relied on high touch – face to face interaction – and pivot it into a high tech, high engagement online community. That - rather than diminishing the experience – takes it to such another level that their best form of marketing is the customers themselves. In this conversation we talk about… the pivot from high touch to high tech – the impact of lock down on our digital attention (including what he sees working right now) – and why relentlessly obsessing about your story is still the number tool of engagement. If you want to dig even further into Justin’s experiences in creating, building and globally scaling Vino Mofo… you can hunt down our previous conversation - which I believe is episode No.62. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – audio not perfect. So… other than staying well and looking after each other - I hope somewhere in here you find the fuel you need for your next right thing. I'm so incredibly grateful that our first guest is Justin Dry, the Founder & CEO of Vinomofo. Greetings everyone, my name is Julie Masters and welcome to another episode of Inside Influence. In which I delve into the minds of some of the world’s most fascinating influencers – or experts in influence - to get to the bottom of what it really takes to own your voice - and then amplify it to drive an industry, a conversation, a movement or a nation. ____________________________________________________________________________One of the things I notice a lot in talking to people about influence - and influencers - especially those that have managed to harness attention long enough to redefine or reinvent an entire industry - is the assumption that it must be sexy.Like the hero’s journey - only in a cool T-shirt. A one way upward trajectory - where you can always see a light beconning at the end of the tunnel, and everything you try either works - or provides an obvious answer around what will.Yet never - in 20 years of working with, talking to influencers - have I heard anything like that version of events. Usually it starts with a feeling - a nagging thought that something is missing - a product, a service, a conversation. And then begins a seemingly never ending process of figuring out what happens next. And that generally involves years of starting conversations you have no idea how you’ll finish. Experimenting with strategies you’re not sure you fully understand. Selling ideas or products you have no clue how you’re going to build. And sitting on the office floor once everyone has gone home - trying to remember why you started.I saw a diagram on Instagram the other day… what people think it looks like - what it actually looks like. AND THAT - IN MY EXPERIENCE - IS ABOUT AS TRUE AS IT GETS.For my next guest - that squiggely line began in a garage - and then a campervan - and then became one of the fastest growing online wine retailers on the planet. With an annual turnover already of more than $50 million- and a Global Tribe of Wine Lovers who - and trust me I’ve met a few - you can’t stop evangelising about their love for all things Mofo.As Co-Founder + CEO, my guest today Justin Dry has done what many would say was impossible - reinvent one of the oldest - most weighed down in tradition - categories imaginable. Wine.I first met Justin when I was asked to interview him on stage at a corporate event. So much gold came from that conversation - around what worked - but more importantly what didn’t - when it comes to starting, scaling, hacking attention, using social fuel and combining the powers of human interaction with cutting edge content. That all I remember is walking away feeling like ‘why didn’t we record that?!?’.In today’s conversation we talk about:The incredible, unexpected, journey of vinomofo - I don’t always dive into back story - it’s just not that kind of podcast - but with Justin I did - for specific purposeHow grassroots storytelling is at the heart of building any tribePractical tools on how to use online platforms to gain traction (including when to and when not to double down) - and what he sees coming next when it comes to online attentionHow to translate what works in a traditionally face 2 face (i.e. high touch) model (such as buying wine) into digital channelsHow to manage the issue of control when it comes to creating a culture where everyone is responsible for building digital engagementHis favorite and most expensive mistake - and what it taught him about being grown upAnd how the 5 love languages has transformed the way Justin’s manages team MofoWhat I love about Justin and the Vino Mofo story - is not only that it’s a story about being willing to back yourself, over and over again. Which is key number one in influencing anything - or anyone. But that it always, always - comes back to how many times you’re willing to get curious, reset, follow your gut and ask the question.A small shout out finally also to Justin and his amazing partner Asher - who - just last week - welcomed baby Matisse into the world. She’s gorgeous - and it’s hard to imagine how much wine would have been consumed in her honor over the past seven days. Congratulations guys. Enjoy the cocoon - and the caffeine. So - without further delay - pour yourself a glass - and enjoy my conversation with the Head Mofo himself - Justin Dry. This episode took a little longer to get to you than usual but, like a fine wine, all good things take time! Today's guest is an amazing entrepreneur, investor, public speaker, co-founder and CEO of Vinomofo – the legend Justin Dry. Like many good ideas, Justin started Vinomofo with his brother in law at the time over a shared belief that wine should not be about “bowties and bullshit”. On Christmas Eve 2006, they decided to start a business together which led to several further wine related businesses that ultimately ended up in the creation of Vinomofo in 2011. Vinomofo now operates in Australia, NZ and Singapore where it has grown quickly to over $50m in annual revenue, 500,000 members (or "mofos"), and a team of 100. Their incredible success has been recognised by a host of accolades include Online Retailer of the Year 2015 at the ORIA's, Telstra Victorian Business of the Year in 2016, and Hottest Aussie Online Retailer in 2018. Justin himself has been Awarded Spotify Young Entrepreneur of the Year at The Australian Startup Awards is a BRW Young Rich Lister and has been named one of the Top 50 People in E-Commerce 2016, 2017 and 2018 by Internet Retailing. I loved hearing how his love for wine and business have persisted throughout his life and his vision has gone through multiple iterations before he landed at “the one”. Justin has loads of great stories and he isn’t afraid to share the struggles and challenges he’s had along the way, as well as the successes. That kind of candour is a rarity in the business world and it makes for great conversation - and I hope great listening for you. We spoke for more than an hour, but I suspect we could have gone on for much longer …. Especially if we’d had a bottle of great Vinomofo wine at hand.Justin’s episode will be an inspiration for lots of people, but especially those of you who are just starting out and wondering whether they can really make it in business and on the international scene. I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had recording it.
Though Vinomofo was launched in 2011, it really started life back in 2007 in the garage of brothers-in-law and fellow wine geeks Justin Dry and Andre Eikmeier, who just wanted to do something cool for wine lovers and producers. My guest for episode 64 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is Kate Morris, the Founder and CEO of Adore Beauty, Australia's first e-commerce beauty store. With a lot of today's media attention on the startup industry being focused around raising large funding rounds and successful exits, the challenges, struggle and shear resilience required to even get to that point can often be overlooked. Someone who epitomises the real journey to success is my guest for today's episode, Kate Morris, the Founder and CEO of Adore Beauty. Today the company is a huge success, it has over 190 brands on board, 13,000 products available online and an annual turnover $28M. But the company wasn't always a roaring success. Kate founded the company in 1999 as a 21 year old with just $12,000 to cover all operating costs and She struggled to get buy in from the industry with only 2 little known brands joining Adore Beauty at launch. It took Kate several years to get major brands on board and it wasn't until 10 years into the business that she saw substantial growth in the company. Check out festival.business.vic.gov.au/ to access over 500 free and affordable events to elevate, support and inspire you and your business. Today, we’re in the company of Justin Dry, co-founder, online wine club Vinomofo.com. Justin, along with his brother-in-law Andre, originally started their business as Qwoff, an online wine community, where members rated and reviewed wines. They then produced a web series chronicling their wide road trip across Australia in a combi visiting some of the countries best winemakers. But after several years of trying to make it a viable business through community and content, Justin and Andre pivoted to become a wine deals site, adding commerce to their mix, and so Vinomofo was born. Here we talk with Justin about the journey, and the role innovation has played in taking an idea, executing it, learning, pivoting and the importance of evolving in small business.
