Send me a text!Length: 1 hour 43 minutesSynopsis: Last night (4/4/25), in our Thursday night women's shiur, we explored a question posed to me by two of my students (shout out to Moshe and Shmarya) about a song found at the end of most Haggadot: “Is there an inherent problem with saying Adir Hu?” The concern is that, on the surface, Adir Hu seems to exemplify the type of excessive adjectival praise condemned by R' Chanina in Berachos 33b. Our session was more of a “Machshavah Lab”-style exploration than a formal shiur: we learned the Gemara, raised a bunch of questions, and then turned to the poskim—with the Rambam leading the minority view, opposed in various ways by the Tur, Beis Yosef, and Shulchan Aruch. We also looked at the Rambam's stricter formulation in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim, noting what seem like major inconsistencies in his position. We concluded with a summary of why, according to everyone except the Rambam in the Moreh, it's halachically permissible to sing Adir Hu. Welcome to What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World, with host deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan speaking with comedian/filmmaker Adir Miller and his mother Marianne Miller, a child Holocaust survivor. On January 27, Marianne -- a well-known Israeli speaker and educator -- will address the United Nations General Assembly on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Born in wartime Budapest, Marianne will speak in New York about her survival story, surrounded by three generations of her family, as she was last year while leading a March of the Living delegation from the city of her birth to Auschwitz. As a baby, Marianne was saved by her mother, who tore off her yellow star and, holding her daughter, ran away from a transport for mothers and children to certain death. They evaded capture after Marianne's mother bribed an Arrow Cross Hungarian Nazi soldier with a simple golden ring. Son Adir, one of Israel's most celebrated comedians and artists, used his mother's stunning survival story as the basis of his recent movie, "The Ring," which he wrote, directed and starred in. "The Ring" is playing now in Israeli theaters with some 240,000 viewers so far. It will be screened in New York on January 28 at a special screening hosted by the Israeli-American Council (IAC). This year marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, where over 1.2 million people, including 400,000 Hungarian Jews, were murdered. Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī's very presence inspired awe. His glance was so powerful and penetrating that few could bear it. His every movement and gesture expressed extraordinary inner strength. Many smug persons became humbled and submissive simply by entering his presence, as did Mahārāj Adirāj Vijay Chanda Bahadur of Burdwan, who related: "I often went to see Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, and naturally bowed at his lotus feet whenever I did. Yet at one point I considered, 'I am the great Mahārājādirāj of Burdwan. Among all the highly respected people in Bengal society, none is more famous and respected than I. Who is this sādhu in comparison to me? Why should I prostrate before him?' Next time I won't, and I'll watch how he reacts. I was unable to wait to see his response to my rudeness." The canon governing Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī's life was Kṛṣṇa. "kṛṣṇārthe akhila-ceṣṭā"—everything should be done for Kṛṣṇa. That quotation is from the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 22.126. Always busy, busy satisfying Kṛṣṇa in innumerable ways, he unwaveringly personified that maxim, day and night. Wherever he happened to be, Śrīla Sarasvatī Ṭhākura was constantly absorbed in topics of Kṛṣṇa. After his heart condition manifested, when people would ask, "How are you?" he often replied, "I am all right, but Kuñja Prabhu does not indulge me in Harikathā; hence I am unwell."
