I'll introduce Jo. Introducing romance author Jo Thomas Jo Thomas Best selling author of feel-good fiction featuring food, love and family... Hello there Jo, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Jo Thomas: Jenny, great to be here. Jenny Wheeler: You say up front that the sorts of books you write are about food, love, family, and fun. You like to have happy endings. And they are for people who like sunny and funny. Is that's how you started out your writing? Jo Thomas: It's really yes, because they were the books that I loved to read. And I would read authors like Katie Fforde, Jill Mansell and Milly Johnson. I wanted books that would take me to somewhere different where you felt that you would join in old friends? Like in the evenings, I can remember reading a Jilly Cooper and getting into bed at night and thinking, ‘I'm going to visit old friends down the pub.' And it's a nice place to be. I want people to feel that they care about the characters in my books and that they're with them through adversity and that they leave with hope and a smile on their face. When you start writing, people say, oh, write about what you know, and I thought, I don't know about anything. The only thing I like is food really. But I'm not a chef. I'm just someone who's interested in where their food comes from and then I thought why not write about the thing I'm interested in? I was in a restaurant in Galway, in Ireland with my husband and I was like, ‘I dunno what I'm gonna write about.' A perfect setting for Jo's first best seller I'd ordered some oysters and they put down this platter of oysters in front of me. And just for a moment, it stopped raining for a while. And I looked out the window and I was looking out over Galway Bay and the moon came and shone silvery shadow across the water and the candle was going in the window and it was like being in someone's front room eating these oysters. And I thought, this is sexy.

When Catherine Miller became a mum to twins, she decided her hands weren't full enough so wrote a novel with every spare moment she managed to find. By the time the twins were two, Catherine had a two-book deal with Carina UK. There is a possibility she has aged remarkably in that time. Her debut novel, Waiting For You, came out in March 2016.Catherine was a NHS physiotherapist, but for health reasons (Uveitis and Sarcoidosis) she retired early from this career. As she loved her physiotherapy job, she decided if she couldn't do that she would pursue her writing dream. It took a few years and a couple of babies, but in 2015 she won the Katie Fforde bursary, was a finalist in the London Book Fair Write Stuff Competition and highly commended in Woman magazine's writing competition. Soon afterwards she signed with Carina. Soon after that, she collapsed in a heap and was eventually revived by chocolate.Since then she's become an internationally bestselling novelist and hasn't found a week that didn't require revival by chocolate. She is one eighth of The Romaniacs – a group of writing friends who've supported each other since meeting through The Romantic Novelists' Association's New Writers' Scheme. Her latest novel is THE DAY I LOST HER:As I stare at the girl, I feel my heart pound inside my chest. There she is, my daughter, right in front of me after all this time. I have to reach her, to hold her, before I lose her all over again…I have experienced what no mother should: I have lost my child. Many years ago, after my divorce, my daughter moved in with her father, and then went missing…For years, I searched everywhere for my darling girl, but she had vanished without a trace. But even on my darkest days, when my heart felt truly broken, I kept a hope alive inside – a hope that my little girl would, one day, find her way back to me.And now, standing in front of me, so close I could touch her, is a young woman who looks just like my beloved Tilly. I've been reminded of her so many times over the years, but this is different. The curve of her face, the sound of her voice…But just as my heart leaps with unimaginable joy, she disappears into the crowd and I lose sight of her. I can't believe she has gone before I had the chance to reach her.As I desperately scan the faces around me, my heart pounding in my chest, I realise I am certain that she was my little girl, back after all these years. But why would she seek me out now, just to vanish all over again? And how can I find her? Because no matter how much time has passed, she will always be my little girl… And I will do whatever it takes to hold her in my arms once more.An absolutely unputdownable and gripping story about one mother's quest to find her little girl. Fans of Jojo Moyes, Jodi Picoult and Diane Chamberlain will be hooked on this emotional book until the very final page.BUY IT HERE: https://amzn.to/45qfFxyHey! We have spent 3 years using StreamYard. Hold on tight – not only did you have the wonderful Milly Johnson last week… Get ready to meet one of the most brilliant, encouraging and wonderful women writing fiction today. Katie was a mother looking after her 3 children and their dogs while her husband was away at sea, when she had that feeling as if something was missing, a bit like a missing piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Katie started writing Mills and Boons novels, carving out moments while she was running her children's bath. For 8 years she faced rejections, but she never gave up. Her writing may not have been right for Mills and Boon, but she did find an agent and publisher who loved her work. Katie has just written her 30th novel. Her books have sold in their millions in the UK alone as well as all over the world. But what's even more special about Katie is how supportive she is to other writers. She's been the President of the Romantic Novelists Association for more than ten years and has helped so many aspiring authors as well as setting up the Katie Fforde Bursary scheme. Since recording this episode Katie has won the Lifetime Achievement Award for the RNA and it could not be more deserved. We discuss Katie's method-acting style of research, how going to a ballet school when she struggled to dance taught her resilience and the importance of finding her tribe (think Milly Johnson and Jill Mansell… I mean what a tribe). Katie has built a career from her passion – all around the family she adores in Gloucestershire. Plus, she gives some wonderful advice to help you do the same – whatever your missing piece of the puzzle may be.

Subscribe to the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Questions 1. I’m in the mood for a steamy pirate romance, but not one that’s cheesy or over the top ridiculous (which unfortunately is all I’ve been able to find.) My favorite romance authors are Tessa Dare and Sara Maclean, mostly because of the feminist tone and whimsy. Thanks for keeping me company while I commute to work! -Brooke 2. I’m reading Where The Crawdads Sing. Omg! I’m flying through this book. I love that the marsh is a character. Can you recommend a book that has that same feel? I’ve also read Moloka’i and loved it! I live in NC but have spent some time in Hawaii. I would love southern/beach/island. I also wouldn’t mind something set in Europe or Africa but please no middle America. I like something I can spend some time with so please no graphic novels or short stories. Thank you so much! -Jessica 3. I’m 47 and went thru a divorce two years ago. I’m looking for romance novels that involve women that have been married for many years and are rejoining the dating world and finding love. I’ve not been brave  enough to do so yet and need inspiration.  -Lee 4. Hello! I’ve been a chick lit fan since I read the first Bridget Jones book in 2000ish.  I’ve read many of the popular authors from the last 20 years or so.  I mostly like ones set in the United Kingdom, that are contemporary and of the romantic comedy type.  No dukes, lords or highlanders, not too much graphic sex, not too much real high stakes drama.  Just fun, wacky, romantic comedy hijinx!  Some popular authors I’ve read and enjoyed in the past are Helen Fielding, Marian Keyes, Jojo Moyes, Sophie Kinsella, Jill Mansell, Katie Fforde, Jenny Colgan, Jane Green, and Louise Rennison. Pretty much all of the early 2000’s chick lit staples.  I’ve been looking for something light and fun to read this summer,  and would love to discover some new chick lit authors and titles. Hopefully some with a bit more diversity!  I recently read and loved Queenie. Thanks so much! I’m a big fan of the podcast and looking forward to your suggestions.   -Tamara 5. Hey guys! I was really hoping you could help me out of a reading slump I’m in. I’m in college, and reading usually two books for my classes a week (at least) that are pretty heavy and dense, as well as a bunch of academic articles. So, during the school year I find myself not reading as much for fun, save for comic books. Summer just started however, and I’ve been so excited to relax and read, but now I can’t find the motivations or want to read any of the books I have. I think I need lighter, more fun material; a page turner. I read pretty much any genre, but mostly sci-fi and fantasy, and sometimes historical fiction. My two favorite authors are Donna Tartt and N.K. Jemisin. Also, no graphic novel recommendations please, as I find myself still able to read those.   -Scarlett 6. My husband and I are considering adopting/fos-adopting a child. And like the reader I am, it always makes me feel more comfortable to read as much about it as I can before jumping in. I’m looking for books about the adoption process. Can be fiction or nonfiction. Memoir or biography would be great. I just recently read “Instant Mom” by Nia Vardalos and that really fit what I’m looking for. I’m looking for material from the perspective of the people doing the adopting, NOT from the perspective of the person being or having been adopted (which is what I keep finding). Books can be either book or audio format. Fiction is fine if it is something I can read to relate to or get inspiration from. Thank you so much for your help! -Ally 7. I have recently become a romance obsessed reader. I mostly read M/M romance and I love the jock and the “what is sports and who cares” guy trope. What I would like is an F/F version of this trope. I am thinking of something like a member of the US Women’s National Soccer Team and a woman who does not get sports. (Yes, I have a crush on Megan Rapinoe. Who doesn’t?) Although I love YA, I would really love it if these were adults so being an athlete is the job of one of the women. I am totally happy with sexy times on the page. (The hotter, the better.) Thank you so much! -DyAnne Books Discussed The Rogue Pirate’s Bride by Shana Galen Captured by Beverly Jenkins Land of Love and Drowning by Tiphanie Yanique (tw: rape of a child) All the Birds, Singing by Evie Wyld (tw: violence against women incl. sexual assault, harm to animals) The Switch by Beth O’Leary His Perfect Partner by Priscilla Oliveras (cw: family member with cancer) The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory Sofia Khan Is Not Obliged by Ayisha Malik Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan Rebelwing by Andrea Tang A Big Ship At the Edge of the Universe by Alex White  To the End of June by Cris Beam Motherhood So White by Nefertiti Austin Fire and Ice by Rachel Spangler Roller Girl by Vanessa North

Jill's Mansell's heart-warming new book is the feel-good novel of 2020. A beautiful Cornish setting, a chaotic family, a woman who's had enough of romance - or has she? Not to be missed by readers of Katie Fforde and Millie Johnson. The trouble with secrets is that you can't guess what the consequences will be . . . Lainey has just lost everything. Luckily one little fib (OK, quite a big fib) helps nail her dream job. Soon she's living in a stunning house by the sea, fending off obsessed fans for a retired - if far-from-retiring - actor and organising his charming but chaotic family. Yes, everyone thinks she's part of a couple and it's tricky keeping this secret. But at least she's not looking for love: with her disastrous relationship history, men are definitely off the agenda. Except Seth, the actor's grandson, really is very attractive. There's growing chemistry and a definite connection between them. What would happen if he knew the truth? But Lainey's not the only one with a secret - it seems everyone has them! And they're all about to start unravelling...

What we're often seeing as consumers are loss leaders for big media. Amazon doesn't have to make money from Kindle Unlimited. One you might not have heard of: Scribd (https://www.scribd.com) . So far, it's reasonable for authors and for readers (although their "unlimited" may really mean "unlimited unless you're a superuser, in which case maybe not"). The takeaway for writers: limit yourself to Kindle Unlimited with great caution. The takeaway for readers: Unlimited is still limited--to what's there and available. Relying on suggestions and highlights from various services is probably limiting what you see, and maybe what you read. #AmReadingSarina is seeking "great books with ghosts in them." Which reminds me (KJ) of one Sarina and I both enjoyed: The Keeper of Lost Things (https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780062473554) , Ruth HoganJess is listening to Nick Hornby's Slam (https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781594484711) , and Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World (https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780735214484) from David Epstein. She added an appreciation for Stephen King's Ur.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ur_(novella))KJ is slowly reading Author In Progress (https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781440346712) and regretting some Kindle Unlimited downloads from an author she once enjoyed (Katie Fforde). As restaurant prices double for the day and the world turns pink and fluffy, it's easy to be cynical about February 14th. Romance is a marketable commodity, partly because most of us grow up convinced that our most important aim in life should be to find true love, believing that the perfect partner is out there waiting, if only we can identify him or her, and then it will be hearts and flowers all the way to the grave. You don't have to be starry-eyed to argue that this vision of romantic love is a good thing; it holds families together, it inspires hard work and virtuous behaviour - and it affects the chemistry of the brain in a way that is similar, it seems, to cocaine. There is an alternative point of view; romantic love was invented a mere five hundred years ago and has been a nuisance ever since. In this view, a couple's aspiration to remain together and faithful until death do them part (which gets more ambitious as people tend to live for so much longer) is an unrealistic ideal; it under-values both shorter-term and less exclusive relationships, and it causes unnecessary family breakdowns over infidelities that ought to be forgiven - if not indeed permitted. Is Saint Valentine the harbinger of human happiness - or the devil in disguise? Witnesses are Katie Fforde, Prof Simon May, Dr Julia Carter and Andrew G Marshall.

If only Essie hadn't written that letter - the one that went viral... THIS COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING is the feel-good new novel from Jill Mansell, the bestselling author of MEET ME AT BEACHCOMBER BAY. Not to be missed by fans of Katie Fforde and Lucy Diamond. On the one hand, if Essie hadn't written that letter - the one that only her best friend was meant to see - then she'd still be living like an actual proper grown-up, tucked up with Paul in his picture-perfect cottage, maybe even planning their wedding... On the other hand (if her true feelings hadn't accidentally taken the internet by storm, that is) she never would have met Zillah and Conor - not to mention Lucas. And she'd never have found out just how much life there is to be lived... 'One of my favourite writers' Katie Fforde 'Reading Jill is always such a joy!' Veronica Henry
