Not everyone loves wine. I know this. And while it's hard for me to relate, I can respect it. My very good friend Heather, who lives in Austin Texas, has never liked wine. In fact, she has even referred to it as “rotten juice” during our decades long friendship. She suggested we do an episode where she shares her past experiences and biases with wine, so that other non-wine drinkers out there felt seen. I see you. Heather was open to tasting a little bit of wine, because she is curious about why people like me find so much joy in it and she wanted to have some baseline knowledge so she could carry on a conversation with the wine drinkers in her life. Listen as we open 5 different bottles of wine and discuss:What's that smell? The one that was “stanky”If cheddar popcorn and chili pistachios hold up as wine pairings The definition of cougar juice Drinking for taste, not to get drunkIs non alcoholic wine a thing?Get my favorite wine preservation system, the Coravin Pivot, here- so you can take your time with your open bottles. Throughout history, across cultures and in every walk of life, there have always been people whose identity went beyond the two-gender mold. And those who do not fit the gender assigned to them at birth. Though people in the past did not often have the concepts, terminology or relative freedom we have today, there are many notable historic figures whom historians speculate were likely transgender or non-binary. Every winter for 13 years between 1954 and 1966 the greatest sports cars as well as the greatest sports car drivers in the world would gather in the Bahamas for what may well have been the coolest racing event in history. 10 days of partying, racing, hanging out on the beach, and enjoying life with some of the world's greatest stars is just as awesome as you think it is. Racers like Stirling Moss, AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Masten Gregory, Roger Penske, Carrol Shelby and others showed up year in and year out to battle for the money and glory in the world's coolest cars. The first ever 427 Cobra race car debuted at this event, Duntov brought the Gran Sport Corvettes, Ferrari, Porsche, and on and on it goes. The history is interesting, led by a tyrant named Red Crise the event was his idea and with a unique combo of an iron fist on one side and a velvet gloved Baronet's hand on the other, he made magic. This is the fantastic story of Bahamas Speed Week.
So in this episode Laura, Krys and Dean discuss Valentines Day, mostly in Krysta's corner before we dig into the life of Harry Oakes. We discuss his life, how he discovered his fortune, how he met his young wife and became a British Citizen and earned the title of Baronet as he settled in the Bahamas. The Bahamas was governed by the Duke of Windsor, the former King of England Edward the VIII and his American wife the Duchess of Windsor. We learn about his murder, how someone attempted to set the body on fire using insecticide and then we discuss suspects, the bungling of the investigation and so much more in this man-history-can-be-weird episode of the Family Plot Podcast!!

Jim Mallinson has a lot of titles. Baronet, Sir, Professor, Doctor, Mahant, and of course Pilot. Jim is the world's leading expert on Hatha yoga and Sanskrit. He has translated texts that go back thousands of years. Jim became fascinated with India on a trip there when he was 18 years old and for every year since other than during Covid he has spent 6 months of every year there living as a Sadhu, or "one who has renounced worldly life"- basically a vagabond, but then during the other 6 months has achieved an unbelievable resume in academia, mostly through Oxford University. We're kicking this week off with a bang talking about one badass soldier named Fitzroy Maclean. Now, the British army is full of some of the worst names for just about everything. I mean, c'mon, knights of the garter? But they more than make up for it by bringing in all the baddest Irish and Scottish shitkickers they can find to shore up that inherent English weakness. Some of the things Fitzroy accomplished were truly remarkable. And the ways he did them even more so. This was a fun one, so enjoy!

DEFRA has failed to file dozens of reports on environmental legislation, which it is legally bound to do. The reports are essential because they show the public and campaign groups how effective laws are at achieving their goals. The findings are published in a report by the Office for Environmental Protection, or OEP, which was set up to monitor how well environmental regulations are working and whether government departments are implementing them properly. The Food Standards Agency has confirmed that one person has died following an outbreak of listeria. It is warning people not to eat any Baronet soft cheese products after high levels of listeria monocytogenes were found, although the death has not been specifically linked to this cheese. The Old Cheese Room which produces Baronet told us in a statement that they have now changed their testing regime, and none of their other cheeses has been affected. A new report suggests supermarkets and the government need to do more to reduce the environmental impact of agriplastics. That's things like polytunnel plastic, plastic mulch - the sheeting that's put on the fields to keep the soil warm - irrigation pipes, fertiliser bags and even the microplastics present in fertiliser pellets and some composts. The Environmental Investigation Agency report says government policy around the production and disposal of agriplastics is lacking. As we continue our week-long look at farm waste, we visit one firm in South Wales which is turning waste farm plastic into products. They collect and clean materials like wrapping for silage or feed packaging, it's then turned into pellets which can be used to make things like fence posts. Secret Societies are cloaked in shroud and mystery. Private ceremonies, invite only parties, members who are sworn to secrecy participate in ancient rituals, indulge in hush hush rites, possibly partake in debauchery. One such place and order was the Hellfire Cave and the Hellfire Club. We travel back in time to share the origins of this mystical group and gathering spots to peek into the closed off convention. Please click on the subscribe/Follow Button Click here to go to joe's book Click here to go to Jen's Poshmark Closet Click here to go to our website The Hellfire Club To build the lodge, they say that Connolly's workmen used stones from the ancient passage tombs - their destruction marks the start of the association of the site with the supernatural. Local legend has it that the devil was so enraged by the desecration that he blew off the wooden roof of the lodge in a storm. After Connolly's death, his widow leased the building to the Earl of Rosse, Richards Parsons, in 1735. He was one of the leading figures in the Dublin Hellfire Club - also known as The Blasters or the Young Bucks of Dublin. The club was one of many in both England and Ireland where rich young rakes indulged in ceremonial drinking and dining and gambling and carousing. The Hellfire Caves (also known as the West Wycombe Caves) are a network of man-made chalk and flint caverns that extend 260m underground. They are situated above the village of West Wycombe, at the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, Southeast England. They were excavated between 1748 and 1752 for Francis Dashwood, 11th Baron le Despencer (2nd Baronet), founder of the Society of Dilettanti and co-founder of the Hellfire Club, whose meetings were held in the caves. The caves have been operating as tourist attractions since 1863.

Sources: “The closing scene of the Bible is not a vision of human beings going up to heaven, as in so much popular imagination, nor even of Jesus himself coming to earth, but of the new Jerusalem itself coming from heaven to earth… What God did in Jesus, coming to an unknowing world and an unwelcoming people, he is doing on a cosmic scale. He is coming to live, forever, in our midst, a healing, comforting, celebrating presence… Heaven and earth were joined together in Jesus; heaven and earth will one day be joined fully and forever.” – N. T. Episode Description: This week, the Duchess meets the brilliant Virginia Grant of Kingston Bagpuize House. In this episode, the Duchess learns about the perfect architectural symmetry of Kingston Bagpuize, we are taken on a tour through the rare fauna on the estate, and Virginia reveals what it's really like to have Maggie Smith in your home. Top Quotes: “My guidance to future generations would be don't ignore what your predecessors did. It's so important you preserve the estates. It's so important to realise you have this jewel and you must look after it properly.” - Virginia Grant “These homes, this is part of OUR heritage and I mean our heritage as a country. We have this extraordinary wealth of art, of buildings, of scenery. In time, when there are houses all around them these estates will be an oasis for people to enjoy.” - Virginia Grant About the Guest and Stately Home: Virginia Grant is a qualified barrister and the current custodian of Kingston Bagpuize House & Garden. Virginia married Francis Tollemache Grant, son of Sir Francis Cullen Grant of Monymusk, 12th Baronet in 1993. The couple had two children together Elizabeth and Alexander and, following the passing of her husband in 2003, Virginia became responsible for the management, maintenance and development of the house, its gardens, parkland and the estate buildings. Kingston Bagpuize House is an historic stately home that sits in the village Kingston Bagpuize in Oxfordshire. Thought to have been built originally in the 1660's, the house seen today is largely the result of remodelling done in the early 1700's. The beautiful gardens at Kingston Bagpuize House were created by Miss Raphael and contains a notable collection of unusual trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs. Kingston Bagpuize House was used as the set of 'Cavenham Park', the residence of 'Lord Merton', in the television series Downton Abbey. It was also used as 'Mrs Goddard's School' in the 2020 feature film Emma. About the Host: Emma Rutland, The Duchess of Rutland, did not always stride the halls of stately homes. Born Emma Watkins, the Duchess grew up the daughter of a Quaker farmer, in the Welsh marsh countryside. She trained as an opera singer in the Guildhall School of Music, and worked as a successful interior designer before meeting her future husband David Manners, the 11th Duke of Rutland, at a dinner party. Their marriage in 1992 would transform Emma Watkins into the 11th Duchess of Rutland, thrusting her into the world of aristocracy, and handing her the responsibility of one of the nation's great treasures: Belvoir Castle. While simultaneously running the day to day operations of the castle, and raising five children, The Duchess became fascinated with the history and importance of the other stately homes of the UK. Join The Duchess as she embarks on a wonderful journey through time, to learn more about the incredible homes that have defined Great Britain and, most importantly, meet the other extraordinary women who work tirelessly behind their doors to preserve their history and magic for future generations.
