I am really excited to chat to today's special guest Kay Wilson. Kay is a Nottingham-based illustrator, most well known for her cover of the best-selling book A Kind of Spark, as well as Keedie, Like a Charm and Like a Curse by Elle McNicoll. Kay has worked on a wide range of projects, from editorial illustration to podcast art. I hope you enjoy listening to our chat!Things Kay mentioned and recommended (with notes below provided by Kay!):Gabe Dunn Article - Get Rich or Die Vlogging (the original was posted to Fusion, which doesn't seem to exist anymore, hence the reupload)Layout Paper - I used Seawhite of Brighton's one if people want exactTombow Brush PensPosca MarkersPentel Arts Pocket Brush Pen - the name of the pen Kay couldn't remember!Pith Sketchbook - technically I use their "blank notebook" as their official sketchbooks have much heavier GSM paper, and I mainly use ink. The heavier GSM is probably better for painting, but the notebook level is perfect for sketching and doodles :)Kay's links:Instagram: Kay Wilson

Journey of Justice: The Civil Rights Act at 60

The Community's Conversation

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2024 53:46

As our country heads into a pivotal 2024 election, we unpack the creation and the legacy of one of the most significant legislative achievements in American history, the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The 60-year-old Civil Right Act – bold, imperfect at creation, and controversial – demanded a fundamental fairness in American life that today remains an unfinished task. In June 1963, President John Kennedy urged Congress to enact a comprehensive civil rights bill, driven by widespread resistance to desegregation and the murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. Following Kennedy's assassination, President Lyndon Johnson championed the bill, ultimately securing its passage the following year, despite intense resistance that included a 54-day filibuster by opponents. At the bill's signing on July 2, 1964, President Johnson was joined by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other civil rights crusaders. The Civil Rights Act barred unequal voter registration requirements, banned discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, or national origin” in places of public accommodation, in public education and in federally-assisted programs, banned discrimination based on “race, color, religion, sex, or national origin” in hiring, and expanded the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. The passage of the Civil Rights Act was a watershed moment in American history. It effectively ended the era of notorious “Jim Crow” laws, previously upheld by the Supreme Court, which permitted racial segregation under the pretext of “separate but equal.” Since 1964, Congress has expanded the Civil Rights Act to strengthen the protection of essential civil liberties. With an expert panel, we pay respects to the vision of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and take stock of the state of – and threats to – civil liberties in today's America. Featuring: Janet E. Jackson, Former President & CEO, The United Way of Central Ohio, Former City Attorney for the City of Columbus, Former Franklin County Municipal Court Judge Dr. Hasan Kwame Jeffries, Associate Professor, Department of History, The Ohio State University Jen Miller, Executive Director, The League of Women Voters of Ohio The panel moderator is W. Imagine going to your doctor and having treatment forced upon you. This is called compulsory treatment and in Australia it's legal. Compulsory mental health treatment is when a psychiatrist believes that a patient is at a severe risk of harming themselves or others, who can then be forced to take medication or undergo treatment. But how subjective is that decision on labelling the risk? And if the medical practitioner gets it wrong it means a loss of their rights, and quite often incredibly strong and debilitating medication. Dr Kay Wilson from the University of Melbourne joins the Briefing to explain how compulsory treatment works and the stigmas attached to mental health in Australia. The debate about whether mental health law should be abolished or reformed is one that is highly charged and to which there are no easy solutions. In Mental Health Law: Abolish Or Reform? (Oxford UP, 2021), Dr Kay Wilson does not shy away from these controversial debates. Examining the work that dignity can do, she makes the case for an holistic interpretation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In thinking about mental health reform, she provides a core framework which may guide support and intervention in a way that compels respect for the dignity of the person. This book makes an important contribution to the literature. Its nuanced approach and fearlessness in delving into the hard issues should be required reading for policy makers, lawyers and mental health practitioners.   Dr Kay Wilson is a postdoctoral fellow at the convenor of The Disability Law Network at Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne. As an Energy Healer, she has worked across the spectrum of healthcare, from corporate clients to patients in and out of hospital, including young babies in intensive care, to the elderly at home. She is passionate about the importance of energetic health and peace of mind as a pathway to enhancing both health and lifespan of her clients.  Kay's work on performance and life quality specialises in helping individuals release negative patterns of self-sabotage and triggering self-destructive behaviours which are often imprinted from childhood or passed on from generational trauma. This powerful work enables them to overcome challenging interpersonal relationships, crippling self-doubt, stress and health issues at any age or life stage.  I have known and worked with Kay for over 5 years and in this time consider the transformative work we've done together as essential in my arsenal of wellness tools and experts. She is quite simply extraordinary in her ability to heal what traditional medicine and therapy can sometimes bypass. In this soulful episode with one of my favourite go to experts, I invited Kay to share her wisdom about the womanhood cycle in the context of understanding each phase in a culture that fetishises youth. This is a new perspective on the powerful cycle of life that each woman journeys through, just as we witness in nature, every living entity has different phases of existence. Episode 81 - Staring in the Eyes of Evil

Two Nice Jewish Boys

It was a Saturday afternoon in mid December in 2010 when Kay Wilson and Kristine Luken decided to go for a hike in the Mata forest, near Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem. That decision proved fateful, and even fatal for one of them. Rewind 4 months. Kay, a British-born Israeli citizen, is guiding a Holocaust tour through Poland. She meets Kristine Luken, a Christian American enthralled by the Jewish people and their history. Kay is so moved by Luken's passion that she invites her to her home country to experience the real Israel and Luken accepts. She flies to Israel and the two engage in their mutual love of hiking. What happened in the hills that day in December has been haunting Kay ever since. This very interview was postponed as Kay found herself suffering from a debilitating bout of PTSD. But still she finds the strength to tell her story, again and again. Why? We're honored to have Kay Wilson join us today to tell her story and answer that question herself. I met a great friend who I have known "my whole life" but didn't meet until I was 33.  She is Kay Wilson.  Kay was stabbed by Hamas 13 times.  She lived to tell the tale.  She is not wonderful because of her EPIC story of survival, she had an epic story of survival because she is wonderful.  See for yourself.
