In this installment of Pixelated Audio, we're taking a stroll through the soundtrack of Blades of Steel. Originally, Konami released this fact-action hockey game in the arcades in 1987 but it really gained popularity a year later when it was converted to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. However, most of us (at least your hosts) tend to forget that two sequels were released: NHL Blades of Steel '99 and NHL Blades of Steel 2000 which we've got some tunes from as well. Composed by: Arcade/NES: Shinya Sakamoto, Kazuki Muraoka, Atsushi Fujio, Kiyohira Sada GameBoy: Hidehiro Funauchi, Akiko Itou GameBoy Color: Matt Simmonds Nintendo 64: Kazuhiko Uehara (sound producer), Nobuyuki Akena (sound director), Takahito Uenishi (SFX), Mitsuteru Furukawa (Sound programmer) PlayStation: Let us know! As Dylan argues on this ep, life on Earth is owed to the sun. So why has it taken us so long to make decent cars that use the sun? Sure, this is terrible logic that doesn't follow at all. But also I feel like I should own a solar car by now. Well, let's look at some really impractical ones- solar RACE cars. They're pretty cool, even if they look like cuts of salmon. You can find a video version of this podcast for free on Scanline Media's Patreon! If you want to find us on Twitter, Dylan is @lowpolyrobot and Six is @sixdettmar. Our opening theme is the Hangar Theme from Gundam Breaker 3, and our ending theme for this episode is Our Sun from Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hand. It feels like Metal Gear Solid barely needs an introduction. First released in 1998 for the playstation, it launched Hideo Kojima into the western spotlight and has been credited as a foundational game in the stealth genre. It combined a cinematic presentation with a larger than life cast of villains that somehow never broke through how seriously the game seemed to take itself. There was an attention to detail here that blew people's minds upon release, not only in the level of interactivity but also the many easter eggs and secrets scattered throughout the game. But for all its critical acclaim, and its renowned legacy, is Metal Gear Solid still a fun game to play today? Every single entry in the series innovated in a big way, and Metal Gear Solid was the first 3D title to come out. Were pundits at the time just wowed by what was essentially a glorified tech demo, or is Metal Gear Solid still a worthy title to play to this day?On this episode we discuss:StealthMetal Gear Solid is credited for the revitalisation and popularization of the stealth genre. But just how good is the stealth gameplay here really? Is it as good as the later games in the series, and how does it hold up in comparison to its contemporaries like Thief?StoryThe Metal Gear Solid series is famous for its batshit insane storytelling, wacky villains and twists and turns. How well does the first game execute on its story, and how does it use cutscenes and codec calls to reveal character's personalities and philosophies?ActionMetal Gear Solid isn't just a stealth game, and features a heavy dose of action particularly towards the end of the game. How well realised are the action setpieces compared to the stealth? We answer these questions and many more on the 110th episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast! Today's Rerun is C1E35: "The Floppy Show", originally released Sept 20th, 2018, it was our focus on music from games from Computer systems (as opposed to conventional game consoles). The episode was named after a local Des Moines-area kid's show from the 1950s-1980s, and features clips of the show in both the intro and the outro (as well as a little Kraftwerk and Sonic CD). Please note that due to the attached ear catcher at the beginning regarding Best of 2019, the time stamps in the track list will be off by a minute, minute and a half. Up against a deadline to put this down for a couple months, I did not have time to update the time stamps accordingly. They're still reasonably close, I suppose. :-) Cheers! Lifelong gamers might like to reminisce about video game consoles past, but just by the numbers, system that got the most play back in the ’90s was the Game Boy. It outsold every console in its day, which means that a lot of players would have played famous video game franchises on the Game Boy before they played it on a standard system. This episode is all about those versions of famous series, and how the composers tasked with translating iconic VGM themes often worked wonders with the Game Boy’s more limited sound technology. Sejam todos bem-vindos a segunda temporada do Som do Cartucho! Because console video games hit mainstream around the same time that America was watching a lot of B-grade action movies, there’s a more-than-occasional similarity between the way ’80s video games sound and the way those movies sound. It’s a good thing, and this episode is all about VGM that sounds like those movies. Track listing: 0:16: Title Theme / Final Fight (Amiga) / Jolyon Meyers (a.k.a. If you wish to subscribe to the "Noise from the Hearts of Nerds" podcast - audio-only, there are two options: Option 1: Subscribe right here to the "Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels" podcast feed. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us! Here's today's episode: https://youtu.be/3ZvCbBDCa-A Additionally, there are YouTube Playlists you can follow, both an "All Channels" Feed (recommended), as well as channel-specific feeds. You can find them here: Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels Podcast Feed Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 podcast Nerd Noise Radio is now available on Twitch as well! Episodes 21 and forward will be uploaded as they're released, with the backlog of earlier episodes to follow. We were hellions, though….we kept trying to sneak into the birthday line. :-Dp.p.s. The Streets of Rage series had one of the best soundtracks ever, and that music helped define the early '90s era of muscled vigilantes walking city streets and punching bad guys. This episode celebrates Yuzo Koshiro's incredible compositions for those games while also looking at other titles that get at a similar sound: a city at night, glowing with neon, riddled with crime and in great need of a face-punching.
