Today's broadcast is C1E95 for VibeOff Vrijdag, May 9th, 2025. Today's broadcast will be a one-time-only special twist on a FaceOff Friday, where, instead of comparing different versions of the same track against each other, we're comparing pairs (and occasionally trios) of different songs against each other which either have similar movements, or melodies, or instrumentation, or simply just vibes and asking you, the listener to not only tell us which one you like better, but whether or not the comparisons are even valid, and how strongly or weakly if so. So, in lieu of an 8th and final FaceOff Friday episode, Nerd Noise Radio is pleased to present: VibeOff Vrijdag (Vrijdag = the Dutch word for Friday). See the show notes for a link to a document which will allow you to grade me on these comparisons if you so choose!    Tracklist: Vibe-Off# - Timestamps  Track# - Track - Game - System(s) - Composer - Famously never localized for an English-speaking audience, HAL Laboratory and Brownie Brown's Mother 3 has almost become a meme at this point. So much so that I wondered if it could live up the inflated expectations that I unwittingly put on games that are unavailable or difficult to find, a kind of forbidden fruit syndrome. So I made sure to put Mother 3 on my Backlog Resolutions list for 2024 and hey! It's pretty good! It's a lot like Earthbound in good and bad ways, and I like the story of Mother 3 for different reasons than I liked Earthbound's story. Looks like I'm gonna need an all-star guest to dig into this one... Joining me for the discussion about Mother 3 is Rebekah Valentine! Reb is an award winning investigative reporter for IGN, reporting on the inner workings of the industry, how the games we love get made, and giving a voice to workers who are laid off or otherwise mistreated. "Category: Pink Round Puff he's the BALL... Alien SUPAstar!" Today we are talking about beloved Nintendo icon Kirby!!! Created by then-19-year-old Masahiro Sakurai (who later went on to create the Super Smash Bros. series), Kirby first hit the scene in 1992 with Kirby's Dream Land for the Nintendo Game Boy.  Kirby was designed to be approachable to new and younger players unfamiliar with games, and since his inception Kirby has been known as a series with something to offer for everyone: beloved by newcomers and veteran players alike.   Kirby superfan and artist Alejandro Muñoz (@sequin.horchata on IG) joins us to talk about our connection to this loveable pink boy, our first and favorite Kirby games, (including Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and the criminally underrated Kirby Air Ride) and our thoughts on his latest escapade in the 2022 Switch game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Kirby's first true 3D platformer. We also discuss Kirby-creator Masahiro Sakurai's recently started YouTube Channel, where he discusses game development concepts as well as retrospectives on his past projects (including a video on Kirby's Dream Land, which he released the night before we recorded this episode!)Later in the show in "What else we're gay for" this week, we discuss Yakuza: Like a Dragon, HBO's Hacks, Pikmin Bloom, Tower of Fantasy, and more!========Get in touch with us!EMAIL US at gayforplaypodcast@gmail.comFOLLOW G4P Twitter: @GayForPlayPodInstagram: @GayForPlayPodTwitch: twitch.tv/gayforplaypodSupport the Show & Unlock Bonus Episodes on our PATREON========CREDITSIntro and outro music by Connor Marsh (@connorjmarshmallow)Show art by Benny Kessler (@retro.spectacle.studio)Special thanks to our patrons: Blueberri Mary, Elijah Punzal,  Trevor McTavish, Travis Ryans & Martha Turner

Greetings, Gamers! This time, we are joined by Shootkapow's good friend (and game developing partner) RJ! RJ's been recommending songs for the show for over a year, and we're really excited to have him on to talk about one of his favorite composers, Shogo Sakai! Sakai isn't quite as well-known as some of the others we've discussed this season, nor is he as prolific as far as the number of games he's composed. However, he's been involved in the VGM scene for over 30 years, and his work on the massive (and beloved) soundtrack to Mother 3 has made him famous in at least the VGM fandom. And as always, everything we're bringing from his discography is Very Good Music! Thanks as always to our amazing patrons and the artists who made our show art and theme song. You, too, can become a patron at patreon.com/vgmvgm, and you can reach out to us one of these ways: Discord: https://discord.gg/qpbXPdCf2N Twitter: @VGMpod and @Shootkapow E-mail: verygoodmusicvgm@gmail.com Voicemail: Anchor.com/vgmvgm. We look forward to hearing from you! Very Good Music is now proudly affiliated with RPGEra.com (https://rpgera.com/)! The sun has gone down and the moon has come up, and it’s not a good time to be in the city. This is part three of a three-part series that began with a drive into the city and led to a fight through the city. Now you’re in a neon metropolis at night and you’re on your way to the big boss fight. Back in the 16-bit era, urban streets were littered with no-good punks who would attack in wave after wave, leaving a group of musclebound heroes no choice but to keep on punching — and hope there is a whole roast chicken hidden in a garbage can somewhere. This episode is a celebration of those gritty city environments, the music heard in them and the music from other genres of game that nonetheless get at this same vibe. In this epic episode, Voltz goes all out to bring you the greatest underwater podcast episode of all time. But has he bitten off more than he can chew? Is he prepared for the horrors of the deep sea? In delayed celebration of the delayed release of the Turbografx16 mini / PC Engine mini / CoreGrafx mini, our rerun this month will not be one episode, but three - each part of our three part mini-series on the TG16 / PC Engine from September of last year, which was made in conjunction with Bryce Dumond of the Turbotastic Podcast (a fantastic TG16/PCE "game by game" pod). The only difference being that instead of running them parts 1, 2, and 3, we are running them part 3, 2, and 1. This was originally planned for March, and planned to have part 1's rerun date coincide with the release of the mini on it's original release date of 03/19/20 as something of a "grand finale". When COVID pushed back the system's release indefinitely, it scrubbed this rerun scheme along with it. When the system finally did launch last month, it was with insufficient head's up to allow for my mini-series rerun scheme to materialize. So, here in June is our first opportunity. I hope you will accept / indulge the mulligan, enjoy the episodes if you've never heard them before...and enjoy them anew if you have.     Please note that due to the attached ear catcher at the beginning regarding Best of 2019, the time stamps in the track list will be off by a minute, minute and a half. Up against a deadline to put this down for a couple months, I did not have time to update the time stamps accordingly. They're still reasonably close, I suppose. :-)     Cheers!    Legend:    (BC) = Bryce's Picks – CD Audio  (BH) = Bryce's Picks – HuC6280  (JC) = John's Picks – CD Audio  (JH) = John's Picks – HuC6280  (JA) = John's Picks – HuC & ADPCM      01 - Intro - 00:00:00  02 - (BH) Blazing Lazers – Intro - Masatom Miyamoto, JTS, Masanobu Tsukamoto, Sydon Inoue, Keiji Takeuchi and/or Ozono - 00:03:10  03 - (BH) Raiden – Gallantry - Akira Sato - 00:05:09  04 - (JA) Cyber City Oedo 808 – Music S00 - Keiichi Yamamoto, Atsuhiro Motoyama, Miyuki Takagi, and/or Atsushi Yamaji - 00:07:37  05 - (BH) Salamander – Burn the Wind - Miki Higashino, Yoshiaki Hatano, and/or Kazuki Muraoka - 00:10:42  06 - (BC) Lords of Thunder – Auzal Stage - Satoshi Miyashita - 00:12:19  07 - (BH) Afterburner II – Final Take Off - Hiroshi Kawaguchi, and/or Shigeharu Isoda - 00:16:43  08 - (BC) Ys 1 & 2 – Palace of Destruction - c: Yuzo Koshiro / a: Mieko Ishikawa - 00:20:42  09 - (JH) Street Fighter 2CE – Character Select - Yoko Shimomura - 00:22:45  10 - (BC) Lords of Thunder – Llamarada Stage - Satoshi Miyashita - 00:23:49  11 - (BH) Bloody Wolf – Level 1 - Azusa Hara, Hiroaki Yoshida, Tatsuya Kiuchi, Hitomi Komatsu, Shuuji Segawa, Shogo Sakai, Takafumi Miura, Yuji Suzuki, and/or Yusuke Takahama - 00:28:14  12 - (JH) Dead Moon – Moon - Mamoru Ishimoda, and/or Yoko Sonoda - 00:30:12  13 - (JH) Metal Stoker – Computer System (Stage 6) - Hiroto Saitoh - 00:32:33  14 - (BH) Raiden – Fighting Thunder - Akiro Sato - 00:34:48  15 - (BH) Afterburner II – Afterburner - Hiroshi Kawaguchi, and/or Shigeharu Isoda - 00:38:01  16 - (BC) Ys 1 & 2 – Holders of Power - c: Yuzo Koshiro / a: Mieko Ishikawa - 00:42:59  17 - (BH) Blazing Lazers – Area 9 - Masatom Miyamoto, JTS, Masanobu Tsukamoto, Sydon Inoue, Keiji Takeuchi and/or Ozono - 00:44:37  18 - (BC) Lords of Thunder – Cielom Stage - Satoshi Miyashita - 00:46:51  19 - (BC) Castelvania: Rondo of Blood – Bloodlines - Mikio Saitou, Akiropito, Kinuyo Yamashita, and/or Satoe Terashima -  00:51:16  20 - (JC) Double Dragon 2 – Stage 5 - Togo Hiroyuki - 00:54:24  21 - (BC) Ys 1 & 2 – First Step Towards War - c: Yuzo Koshiro / a: Mieko Ishikawa - 00:57:11  22 - (JH) Magical Chase – Stage 3 - Hitoshi Sakimoto and/or Masaharu Iwata - 0:59:12  23 - (BH) Ninja Ryukeden – Level 1 - Keiji Yamagishi, BB, Hasake, and/or Makiko Tanifuji - 01:02:20  24 - (BH) Legendary Axe – Level 3 - Atsumi Chikuma and/or Toshiaki Takimoto - 01:04:12  25 - (BH) Salamander – Starfield - Miki Higashino, Yoshiaki Hatano, and/or Kazuki Muraoka - 01:06:31  26 - (BH) Salamander – Boss - Miki Higashino, Yoshiaki Hatano, and/or Kazuki Muraoka - 01:08:25  27 - (BH) Legendary Axe – Level 1 - Atsumi Chikuma and/or Toshiaki Takimoto - 01:09:04  28 - (BH) Bonk's Adventure – Boss - Tsukasa Masuko and/or Hirohiko Takayama - 01:11:10  29 - (BH) Ninja Spirit – Kessen - M. Coming off of last week's episode featuring songs picked by Bedroth, this episode is Shootkapow's, who picked not only the topic, but all of the songs - each coming from a game that promintently features sword-swinging characters! Inspired by the "too many swords" jokes about Smash Bros, Shootkapow takes us on another ride through the wide world of VGM across multiple console generations. We hope you like Zelda, Fire Emblem, and RPG's, folks! As always, of course, it all follows our one big rule: everything has to be Very Good Music! Thanks to our listeners, Dan Laughton, UtopiaNemo, Voltz Supreme, and RJ Garcia, for our lightning round picks! As always, if you have any comments, questions, or requests, please send them to verygoodmusicvgm@gmail.com, or leave a comment on YouTube! Shout out to Ben "The Diad" Dishman for his help with the awesome pixel art for our show! Check out his stuff @TheDiad!
