Welcome to Mysteries to Die For.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you in the heart of a mystery. All stories are structured to challenge you to beat the detective to the solution. Jack and I perform these live, front to back, no breaks, no fakes, no retakes. The rules for law and order create the boundaries for civil co-existence and, ideally, the backdrop for individuals, families, and companies to grow and thrive. Breaking these rules puts civil order at risk. And while murder is the Big Daddy of crimes, codified ordinances across municipal divisions, counties, states, and countries show the nearly endless ways there are to create mayhem. This season, we put our detective skills to the test. This is Season 8, Anything but Murder. This is Episode 6b, attempted infanticide is the featured crime. This is Safe Haven Part 2 by Jason Little.DeliberationBarrett Turner needs our help like few others have. The elusive figurehead Sampic and his loyal SampicKnights are determined to kill Baby Davey if Barrett can't stop the insanity. Here are the people Barrett's interacted with today:Nelson Kessler, current police chief and former best friendBetty Lou Turner, Barrett's mother and social media fanaticIrene Van Horten, current FBI agent and crazy ex-girlfriendKaleb Hempstead, mail carrier who rescued Davey after his mother died Here are the facts as far as Barrett has figured them out:Based on the video evidence, an alien landed in Branch River and raped poor Mary, who weeks later gave birth to Davey. She died explosively in childbirth two days prior. Her house burned down this morning.Kaleb saved Davey and brought him home. His wife didn't want the baby, so he purchased a baby blanket and took him swaddled to the firehouse.Barrett tried to turn Davey over to the authorities, but each time, one of the SampicKnights who fought the alien intervened, determined to kill Davey.Sampic was an international sensation calling for a unified front to make earth into a safe haven. Some of his followers committed suicide. He was now calling for them to kill the baby with the birthmark over his eye.Police chief Nelson Kessler physically looks like Sampic, with his dark hair and eyes. Irene suspects he may be involved with everything going on. He is known to be grandiose with a mean streak, according to Barrett, his former friend.Betty Lou Turner was uploading Sampic videos at her home and tried to show them to Barrett, but he wouldn't watch. Barrett said Betty Lou is forgetting things, like how she called him with a “cardiac attack” on the day his wife and son died. She denies she called him but noted the accident happened the same day as the meteor.FBI agent Irene Van Horten doesn't trust Nelson Kessler. She has copies of the videos and has traced the IP to a local computer. She is eager to restart a relationship with Barrett.Kaleb has a burned arm that he claims was from a grilling accident, but Barrett isn't so sure. Who is behind Sampic and the SampicKnights' rampant attempted infanticide?ABOUT Jason LittleJason Little is a Texas-based writer with a knack for spinning tales that keep readers hooked. Betty Lou Beets has been referred to as Texas' Black Widow. She had a reputation of chewing up men and spitting them out. Many believe that due to the abuse she endured during her childhood, as well as at the hands of some of her husbands, Betty Lou didn't deserve the punishment that she got. This dirtbag was addicted to love, but was she also a cold-blooded killer? In this episode, my friend Sherry Thomas and I are talking ‘Eddie and the Cruisers', the 1983 cult classic film about a fictional early 1960s rock ‘n roll band on the rise that virtually disappeared from the airwaves after their lead singer, Eddie Wilson, supposedly died in a car wreck following a dispute over the band's experimental second album, which was never released. Almost 20 years pass, and Eddie and the Cruisers are back on the charts, thanks to a renewed interest in ‘60s pop culture and music, and a journalist decides to go on a mission to find out what really happened to Eddie and the unreleased album. Enjoy Sherry's and my conversation about our experience with the film—first as teenagers when the movie debuted, then again recently, as adults—and our lasting love affair with not only the movie but also the soundtrack by John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band. Episode 20 The Zodiac Killer Part 1On December 20, 1968, just after 11pm, 2 teenagers David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen were parked on sleepy and dark Lake Herman Rd on the outskirts of Vallejo, CA. The spot where they parked was one often chosen by young people to due it's privacy. On this night, they weren't alone. A killer pulled up beside their car. What happened next is not known, but what is known is that minutes later, a woman driving by the scene found both of them shot lying near David's car. She raced off to get help and brought police back to the scene. Responding officers found David barely clinging to life. He had been shot once behind the ear at close range. 28 feet away, Betty Lou lay dead, the victim of multiple shots to her back. The randomness of the double murder and clear lack of a motive cast a dark cloud over the coming Christmas holiday. As the holidays passed, the murders faded from memory.Seven months later, on the night of July 4, 1969, just a few miles away from where David and Betty Lou had been killed, Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau sat talking on a different Lover's lane area in Vallejo; Blue Rock Springs park. Their peaceful night was interrupted around Midnight when a car pulled in behind them. It's driver exited the vehicle and carrying a flashlight, walked up to the passenger side of Darlene's Corvair. WIthout warning, the man shined the flashlight into the car and opened fire shooting Darlene and Mike multiple times. He walked back to his car not realizing that his victims were still alive. When Mike cried out in pain, the shooter came back to the car and shot both Mike and Darlene additional times. He then walked back to his car and drove off leaving Darlene in Mike badly injured. First responders rushed Mike and Darlene from the scene. Darlene would not survive her injuries. While Mike was badly injured, he would recover and provide police with a few details. While police were processing the scene 40 minutes after the shooting, a caller using a phonebooth in Vallejo called the operator and reported the attack. But he wasn't a witness, he was the shooter, and he provided details of his crime. He also took credit for the 1968 Lake Herman Rd murders. But the killer was far from done, and from that moment on, using the moniker 'The Zodiac', he would terrorize the SF Bay area for the nect 5 years. This is part 1 of a multi-episode deep dive into one of America's greatest unsolved mysteries; the Zodiac MurdersTo find out how to join us live as we record each new episode of Citizen Detective, follow us on Social Media.Twitter- https://twitter.com/CitizenDPodFacebook Home Page- https://www.facebook.com/CitizenDetectivePodcastFacebook Discussion group- https://www.facebook.com/groups/233261280919915Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/citizendpod/?hl=enYoutube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSgvqIuf4-sEF2aDdNGip2wVisit our homepage: Citizendetectivepodcast.comTo support this podcast on Patreon and gain access to ad-free episodes, bonus content, and our after-show 'The Scrum' visit Patreon.com/CitizenDetective Continue the conversation about this case with fellow Citizen Detectives over at Websleuths: https://www.websleuths.com/forums/forums/citizen-detective-true-crime-podcast.719/The Citizen Detective team includes:Co-Hosts- Mike Morford, Alex Ralph, and Dr. Lee MellorWriting and Research- Alex RalphTechnical Producer- Andrew GrayProduction Assistant- Ashley MonroeSuzanna Ryan- DNA ExpertCloyd Steiger- Retired Seattle PD Homicide Detective

This is a true story that begins in 1931 and is still developing as we live and breathe. You will learn about a woman who served God and died too early. Her service and devotion to God and St. Joseph was almost eclipsed by her friend Father John J. Crowley, also known as the Padre of the Desert, a larger-than-life servant of the Catholic Church. Their stories are forever intertwined and with the help of special guest, Molly Hudson, we will share what happened to us after I mentioned Sister Irenita in Curious Cat Episode 14: Cemeteries. Woo. On this Episode of Under the Library: In the lobby of the theater, Jo is approached by a couple from Abeline, Texas. Betty Lou claims to be able to read minds and provides facts about both Jo and Cully, and Jimmy Dale seems to be a little slow. Betty Lou gives Jo a quarter from 1892 and leaves to get ice cream, saying that she will see Jo later. Worried about Bello's health, Franny calls Dr. Eveline Gardener. She speaks to a receptionist who warns that the doctor is busy but will come as soon as possible. Dr. Gardener has a penchant for picking up stray dogs and keeps a kennel behind her clinic. She also volunteers as a grave digger to stay motivated. Boone has cleaned up in the bathroom and joins Rutherford in looking for Dick. Since they can't find him, they instead head out to look for evidence of the wild dogs. As they wander around the theater, the sky lights up with a flash of fuchsia and green. This is probably the unique "Los Alamos Boreales" that is familiar to town residents. Rutherford and Boone return to the front of the theater to look for Dick. In the distance they see two men shove a third man into a generic looking black car with an illegible license plate. Although they couldn't identify the kidnapped man, Rutherford is convinced that the government has taken Dick. The session ends as Dr. Gardener enters the theater. ------------------------ Bloodstone is an original Call of Cthulhu sandbox, designed by Under the Library's Keeper, and features weekly actual play / live play / real play sessions. There's an earthquake, but it's not really an earthquake. It's just Daphne-now-Deborah having a bit of a temper tantrum b/c no one can call her by the right name -- but now that the power is out, even more ridiculous things can happen. Betty Lou awakes in a bed, in the dark, and doesn't know her location. Where is she? Who's brought her there? Why can't she see? And what is THAT on the bed with her? Once Daphne-turned-Deborah has settled down, Inspector Nards makes a surprise visit to her to see who she really is, what she's up to, and why Deborah has come from the other side to habit Daphne's body. Oh, and Deborah made a milkshake -- except it sounds kind of gross. And things take a turn, in this episode before the finale, when we find out how Jonathon, while on the john, thinks of a way to possibly figure out who the killer is. If this episode doesn't make you tremble, well, then you definitely weren't at the Innocents.

On May 3rd, 1980 Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band started a six week run at number one on the US album chart with 'Against The Wind'. By the time he entered the studio to record 'Against The Wind' in 1979, Bob's decade long run of constant recording and touring had finally paid off. In the spring of 1976 he released 'Live Bullet', his first release with The Silver Bullet Band. It reached the top 40 and went five times platinum in the US. He followed with his ninth studio album, his first with The Silver Bullet Band - 'Night Moves', in October of' '76. Thanks to the hit singles "Main Street", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets" and "Night Moves" the album reached #8 on Billboard and sold six million copies in the US. 1978's 'Stranger In Town' was another huge hit, six times platinum, a #4 placing on Billboard and four more hit singles - "Still The Same", "Hollywood Nights", "We've Got Tonight" and "Old Time Rock & Roll". We've got characters pushed to their limits on this episode of Out of Touchstone, highlighted by one of the most notorious flops in Touchstone's history: THE GUN IN BETTY LOU'S HANDBAG. While Penelope Ann Miller was great in the lead role, both Mike and Chad felt the script left a lot to be desired. The hosts also look at the stressful predicaments in Disney's HONEY, I BLEW UP THE KID and the oppression featured in SARAFINA! from Hollywood Pictures, comparing the plight of each film's protagonist to the turmoil facing Betty Lou.
Betty Lou had a rather rough upbringing and suffered mental and physical abuse throughout her entire life, but does that give her justification to kill? Even though she may have suffered from mental illness, is that reason enough to shoot her second husband, try to run over her third, and ultimately kill her fourth and fifth? Was Betty just an abuse victim that finally had enough or was she a cold blooded black widow that spun a web full of lies and deceit.

These sisters of 15th century English royalty are in for more time travel, as they judge this "weak" experience between mid-late August 1972, 1985, and 1992! First up, Mike Ranger is back to kick things new school with a triumphant August of 1992. Marc James also climbs into the phonebooth and dials us all the way back to August 1972! Rounding things out, Mancrush brings a totally bodacious August 1985 to the fold. These Princesses are as sweet as you'd expect babes from the past would be! They don't always agree with each other's selections, but they are most harmonious. There weren't any heinous picks on this episode, so no melvins were issued! That said, this episode is packed with lots of stellar stuff such as: a rocker receives a dead man's belt, living the American dream, the ladies give their thoughts on reboots, imposter Princesses, the machine that started it all for Mancrush, flaccid linebackers, a musical homage to the 60s, attending high school for seven and a half years, cult classics that stand the test of time, Kimberley gets a movie idea, cellphones killed Hollywood, find out what happens when the FBI stops being polite and starts getting real, a woman fixes daytime TV, HIV can't stop Magic, a famous Bird rides off into the sunset, a movie that makes Mike Ranger's blood boil, Barry Manilow is pissed at Brandy, dude Kimberley got a Compaq, cereal that came with diabetes, musical refugees, Betty Lou is packing, Diane's thoughts on rebooting a virgin, never buy a used coffin, the lack of 80s period pieces, and would you rob a bank for your lover? Do you agree with the Princess's rulings? Play at home and judge for yourself! While you're at it, send your rulings to our Facebook and pick up 20 points on the Dueling Decades Leaderboard! Also, don't miss out on our live trivia! Friday, August, 28th! Check our Facebook events for more details. Please don't forget to subscribe and review! Spencer Thomas is an egregiously talented singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist from Jackson, Mississippi. His new album 'Hangin' Tough' is an 10-song meditation on depression and love. He was formerly the drummer for the band Young Valley and is currently packing up to relocate to Athens, GA. Before she menaced puppies as Cruella de Vil, Betty Lou Gerson was one of radio's busiest character actresses. Her husky voice and powerful characterizations added flair to shows like Suspense, Escape, Johnny Dollar, and Sam Spade. We'll hear her as a murderess trying to stay a step ahead of her conscience in "Beyond Reasonable Doubt" from The Whistler (originally aired on CBS on July 16, 1947). Working for Catholic Charities as a homeless advocate, even into retirement, she still represents the organization's priorities in homelessness at the State Legislature. She provides an insight into the reasons and magnitude of homelessness. She talks about Housing First as the best, but expensive, program and provides an example of how this worked for a chronically homeless mentally disabled individual. She has worked in transitional housing as a bridge, especially for families, and discusses the school services for homeless children. She describes how the federal government's lack of funding for developing low-rent housing in the 1980's has affected homelessness. She tells us about Hawaii's Rental Housing Revolving Fund. We discuss how our passion has carried us into retirement by still doing important work. If you liked what you heard, please hit the SHARE button above and share this episode with your network! Do you have any idea how special you are?Over the last 72 hours, half a million people did the same crazy workout and then shared their score in public. Most of those people didn't win first place. Most of them didn't even want to compete. They didn't do it because Dave Castro made a workout so compelling that it made everyone jump off their couches and start exercising. They didn't do it because Greg Glassman's 2002 Journal articles made them want to exercise until their hands ripped or they felt like vomiting. And they sure didn't do it because they read this blog and wanted to make up an Intramural team of their own. They did it because you quit your job, took the second-largest loan of your life, or spent all your savings on a cold cinderblock space and some barbells that almost nobody really wants to use. They did it because they see you at 5am, and they know you're still there at 9pm when they're at home watching Shark Tank. They did it because you've put everything on the line for them, and they're willing to cross this one little line for you. For YOU, coach. They did it because they trust you to say "good job", and for dozens of others to follow in your exact example. They did it because you told them they COULD, and you're probably the only person in their life who says that. They did it because Betty-Lou from the noon group said, "Will you play for my team?" and nobody's ever done that, even in third grade. They got picked, coach. They got chosen. Because of you. They're not posting their pictures on Instagram because they're hoping to win a new pair of Reeboks. You made them a celebrity. You made them a first-round draft pick. You made them famous, wanted, cheered. You did.The things their parents wanted to give them--security, health, and friendships--you gave them those things. Their husbands wanted to put them on a pedestal--and you gave them a podium. You gave them the respect of their children and the love of their spouse. You.On some days, when the risk seems heavy; when the debt seems long; when the stress makes even the barbell too heavy; when it feels as if your vow of service was really a vow of poverty, I beg you to remember this:You gave up a "job" to start a business helping people. You spent tens of thousands of dollars with no guarantee of return, let alone reward. You give your clients a longer, healthier life. No one else can.On any given hour of any given day, you can change a person's life forever. And you do.Thank you, Coach.

If you wish to subscribe to the "Noise from the Hearts of Nerds" podcast - audio-only, there are two options: Option 1: Subscribe right here to the "Nerd Noise Radio Network - All Channels" podcast feed. Feed will include Channels 1, 2, 3, and any future channels not yet planned. Feed will also include podcasts in high quality, stereo where applicable, and episodes will never expire off the feed. Therefore it is STRONGLY recommended that you subscribe to this Nerd Noise Radio feed and bypass all others. This one will contain all their content anyway. Option 2: If you're ONLY interested in Channel 1 ("Noise from the Hearts of Nerds") episodes, and not in any of the other content that is or will be offered by Nerd Noise Radio, there is a Channel 1-specific feed. But it's hosted on a free account, rather than an upgraded account like the "All Channels Feed" with lower quality sound (mono, I believe), a maximum 2hrs per month of content (so if the month's episodes run longer than that, they may need to be trimmed), and episodes expire off the feed forever after 90 days. It is STRONGLY recommended for most listeners to subscribe to the All-Channels feed instead. However, if you really are only interested in Channel 1 content, here's the RSS: http://www.buzzsprout.com/77944.rss Our episodes will also appear on our Nerd Noise Radio YouTube Channel - just search for Nerd Noise Radio, you'll find us!
