This week's guest is Botanical Artist, teacher and exhibition organizer, Carol Woodin. Carol was born in 1956 in Salamanca, Upstate New York inside the Allegany Indian Reservation, one of two governed by the Seneca Nation of New York. Her father James was a construction worker and her mother June, a library clerk who also enjoyed oil painting and playing the piano. Carol is the middle of six children with four brothers and one sister. Her childhood was one of making her own fun outdoors and with sketchbook in hand she pursued an early interest for art. At first this would be still life and landscape paintings until an introduction to orchids became a passion and one that developed into a level of expertise she did not plan on. In fact, she never wanted to be a botanical artist; her foundation for illustration started in high school and then at the Williamsport Area Community College (now known as the Pennsylvania College of Technology) as a technical illustrator where she was one woman amongst 50 men. But before she could make art her career, Carol spent time as a draftsman, surveyor's cartographer, UPS manager and for three years a tractor-trailer driver. In 2016, she married Paul Harwood who is also a painter and gardener. For the past 30 years Carol has focused exclusively on botanical art; as a painter, teacher and exhibition organizer. Most recently her work has been shown at Jonathan Cooper Gallery, London; Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew, UK: UBS Galleries and Newhouse Galleries in New York; Museum de Zwarte Tulp, in the Netherlands; and the Marciana Library, in Venice, Italy. Her work is also in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the Americas and Europe. Carol was recently invited to contribute to the Grootbos Florilegium, a project to document and raise awareness of the Cape Floral Kingdom in South Africa. In 1995 Carol received a Gold Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for her watercolors of Paphiopedilum orchids, and was the recipient of the 1998 “Bouchier ASBA Award for Excellence” from the American Society of Botanical Artists. In 2013 she received the first Lankester Award for Orchid Art in Cartago, Costa Rica and in 2016, the Orchid Digest Medal of Honor. It's almost time again for our end-of-year “Best of Season 2” (C2R2), on Channel 2, where Hugues and I will pick a combined 22 tracks from the 72 total which we featured across all of Season 2 in calendar 2022. Like last year, we'll each pick 2 tracks per episode (one per episode per host from each of the two hosts), as well as each picking one wildcard track to serve as our episode opener and closer tracks. To build a little excitement for that episode, as well as to give you a handy refresher of everything we did this year, we have put together a music-only recap of the entire season's output (links will be included to each of the “full episodes” with Hugues and I's dialog included). Of the 72, we already know which 22 we're going to feature as “Best of”s, but as there'll be no spoilers on it, you'll have to just guess and wait and see and hope your personal favorites make our cut! ;-) You can also email us at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or reach out to us on social media telling us what your top 11 would be (one track per host per episode, plus one wildcard), and if we get some submissions before recording time, we can mention them in the episode (or if we get enough of them, perhaps we can even make an Archive SUPER BONUS release out of them). The episode I intended to put out this week isn't done yet, but I decided to toss you guys an episode that was previously a Patreon-exclusive. Last year, around the time Singing Mountain hit one hundred episodes, I did a bonus that was just all the VGM tracks I'd encountered just through doing research for this podcast. You know, as opposed to hearing them while actually playing video games, like normal people. Also, if you're seeing this episode, that means Singing Mountain has successfully transferred over from SoundCloud, which sucks, to Libsyn, which does not. Yay! In delayed celebration of the delayed release of the Turbografx16 mini / PC Engine mini / CoreGrafx mini, our rerun this month will not be one episode, but three - each part of our three part mini-series on the TG16 / PC Engine from September of last year, which was made in conjunction with Bryce Dumond of the Turbotastic Podcast (a fantastic TG16/PCE "game by game" pod). The only difference being that instead of running them parts 1, 2, and 3, we are running them part 3, 2, and 1. This was originally planned for March, and planned to have part 1's rerun date coincide with the release of the mini on it's original release date of 03/19/20 as something of a "grand finale". When COVID pushed back the system's release indefinitely, it scrubbed this rerun scheme along with it. When the system finally did launch last month, it was with insufficient head's up to allow for my mini-series rerun scheme to materialize. So, here in June is our first opportunity. I hope you will accept / indulge the mulligan, enjoy the episodes if you've never heard them before...and enjoy them anew if you have. Please note that due to the attached ear catcher at the beginning regarding Best of 2019, the time stamps in the track list will be off by a minute, minute and a half. Up against a deadline to put this down for a couple months, I did not have time to update the time stamps accordingly. They're still reasonably close, I suppose. :-) Cheers! Your Video Game Grooves podcast has returned to refresh you and strengthen your resolve for video games, music, vinyl records, and video game music on vinyl records! This time Anthony and Jeremy are joined by friend of the show Frederik "Blipblop" Lauridsen for a blast from the past! Or, in this case... a Blassty from the passty? This episode is an exploration of the "oldies", meaning game music released on vinyl more than 10 years ago, with Anthony and Frederik headlining some VERY cool picks! First, the never-before-heard (and literally not-on-the-internet) arranged version of Cruise Chaser Blassty, the first game soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu. The flexidisc included with the PC8801 version of the game included a 3-track arranged (and very Prog-rock) album that we are happy to debut to the internet thanks to Frederik's efforts! Next we look at the more conventional (but hard-to-find) Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished Final Chapter by Falcom, and feature tracks by Mieko Ishikawa and Yuzo Koshiro. These older features transition into a discussion-based second segment where we talk about the process of chasing and acquiring older releases. Where can they be found? What might you look for, and how to approach it? ...Is it worth it? We offer our tips, guidance, and suggestions to collectors both new and established. Finally for our third segment we get to some CURRENT events, with news, new releases, and points of note. Join us on our trip through time and space! Mieko Ishikawa, discusses the enormous number of living things in the tropical rain forests of Borneo: giant jungle trees rising 200 to 250 feet high, insects carrying pollen, animals feeding on fruits—all interacting with each other and the unique weather in a complex and mysterious dance. Rafflesia, the largest flower on earth, can grow only in this kind of jungle. Ishikawa has visited Borneo 11 times. Each time, she is fascinated with the energy and mystery that fills the jungle.
It's that time again here at the Retro VGM Revival hour, where you, the fellow listener, have entered another BONUS STAGE.
