Pixelated Audio is back from another VGMCon in Minnesota, this time about space! Joining Gene once again from last year are Pernell from Rhythm and Pixels and Carlos from Heroes Three! We did a similar panel last year; we take a broad theme and make it educational, and then use it as an excuse to cram in all sorts of VGM examples. We had some tech issues and lost some of the recording but we were able to rescue it with a more laid back "part 2" we recorded in the hotel room as a way to fill in gaps and riff for a while. Prepare for launch on this massive double episode clocking in at almost 2 hours! We discuss space, its influence on games and computing, and a wide range of games that have a direct or sometimes tenuous link to space. We've got a ton of music this episode so we hope you enjoy it. Pardon the noise in the background, it was the best we could do with a portable recorder. If you'd like to follow along with our slides that we used during the talk, feel free to click through. Iconic video game composer Tim Follin has a distinct style that fans can recognize instantly.  As a western composer, Tim brought his prog rock influences to create some incredibly beloved soundtracks, including Solstice and Pictionary, just to name a couple.  One distinct trait you'll notice is the use of arpeggios, which can be heard on many of his tracks, including High Score from

In this latest mini episode we're talking about Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos, a childhood favorite on the NES composed by Tim Follin. Solstice released on the NES in the US and UK in mid 1990. It was developed by Software Creations and published by various companies in different regions. It's a challenging isometric puzzle platformer in the vein of games like Knight Lore and Lumo. Solstice only released on NES, but it did have a sequel on the SNES called Equinox. Tim Follin is a VGM composer that hardly needs an introduction. Master of VGM folk and prog rock and putting way more effort into game soundtracks than they usually deserved, Tim worked on games like Bionic Commando and Ghouls'n Ghosts for C64, Plok for SNES, Ecco the Dolphin for Dreamcast and a tons more games. More recently he's moved into game development with games like Contradiction: Spot the Liar.

The hotly anticipated Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge is here for your listening pleasure! The game saw several releases between 1992-1994 on the SNES, Genesis, Game Boy and Game Gear. It was developed by UK games company Software Creations Ltd., published by LJN on Nintendo systems and by Acclaim subsidiary Flying Edge on Sega systems. It's a bad game where you control 5 different characters: Spider-Man, Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops and Gambit in a gauntlet of tedious stages with great music (except Wolverine). The soundtrack was originally composed by brothers Geoff Follin and Tim Follin, no strangers to writing amazing soundtracks for mediocre games, many of them for Software Creations throughout the 80s and 90s. The arrangements for other systems were done by "Sound Images" on Genesis, John Loose on Game Boy, and Alastair (Allister) Brimble on Game Gear. We've disliked the game for almost 30 years but we hope you enjoy the music! Another year another MAGWest, we're back in person in person this year exploring the depths of what makes 'water music' with a legend of VGM analysis, 8-bit Music Theory! We put him through the paces as we goof off in our usual Pixelated Audio style. First we 'get to the bottom' of what makes water music sound so wet with some examples and audience commentary, followed by a silly but fun quiz! Check out 8-bit Music Theory's YouTube channel. 8bmt is a music theory expert, drummer, pianist, and all around nice guy who was so kind to join us on the panel! Thanks also to special audience appearances by friends and previous PA guests: Chase Bethea (Eps: #156 and #20) Street Cleaner aka Jesse Bishop (Eps: #150 and #161) As well as comments from new musician friends Audio Mocha and winner of the sad prize, Mason Lieberman! Apologies about the audio quality, but that's live baby! We still hope you enjoy the show as much we did! Today's Rerun is C1E35: "The Floppy Show", originally released Sept 20th, 2018, it was our focus on music from games from Computer systems (as opposed to conventional game consoles). The episode was named after a local Des Moines-area kid's show from the 1950s-1980s, and features clips of the show in both the intro and the outro (as well as a little Kraftwerk and Sonic CD).   Please note that due to the attached ear catcher at the beginning regarding Best of 2019, the time stamps in the track list will be off by a minute, minute and a half. Up against a deadline to put this down for a couple months, I did not have time to update the time stamps accordingly. In this episode of our weekly fashion vlog we're doing mostly checkered stuff and a bunch of Crocs. As a bonus Krazy Kaptain Khalid plays some funky beats from the 1992 ACCLAIM SNES game "Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade's Revenge" composed by Geoff and Tim Follin. Melee Markus is doing the score to the 1997 Paul Verhoeven classic "Starship Troopers" by Basil Paledouris. Oh btw, we're using a new technique to live mix our stuff so maybe the transitions don't sound as smooth and seamless as they used to BUT you get some awesome live knob-fiddling instead which allows us to comment on stuff while it's running, basically like they do on real podcasts. Enjoy!

The late 1980s and early 1990s was an age full of change in video game music, and that shift into higher quality was arguable when it came to the Commodore 64. But do big budget titles from the silver age of gaming sound as good on The Little Computer That Could? Or were they even better than the originals? Mike and Justin take a listen to a list of tracks which may surprise listeners and will have you wondering...which one sounds better! From Double Dragon adult film discussion, to trying to name the SID chip with goofy names, plus a “brand new Tim Follin soundtrack and game?!” Sold.

David Whittaker, Jesper Kyd, Tommy Tallarico, Toshihiko Horiyama, Miki Higashino, Tim Follin...

While a small number of video game composers go on to achieve great fame thanks to their work in the industry, there are countless others who receive little to no attention at all . One of those often forgotten great video game composers is Tim Follin. A talented individual who’s career has been often hindered by the poor quality of the games he composed music for, so such that despite his considerable talent as a composer, his work is regularly overlooked in favor of other, more well known composers who simply had the good fortune to work on high profile releases. Regardless of the overall quality of the games Follin worked on, he always gave it his all and made some of the most memorable tracks in video game history. Tim Follin is unmistakably one of the absolute greats in the world of video game composition. And this is why This STAGE of the Retro VGM Revival Hour is dedicated to the great works of Composer TIM FOLLIN. =====Game - Composer - Title - Year - Company - System==== 1.) A cover of the "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" theme song by Tim Follin. This cover was arranged for the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive (YM2612 + SN76489) over the course of four nights—from nine o'clock to four in the morning—using my most favorite music tracker ever DefleMask. The only sample I used was the opening guitar riff from the original song (hence why it's called a remix and not a cover). I noticed that if you have a sample and pan it to the left, import it into DefleMask, it comes out different than just importing it into DefleMask right away. How strange...
