Pixelated Audio is back from another VGMCon in Minnesota, this time about space! Joining Gene once again from last year are Pernell from Rhythm and Pixels and Carlos from Heroes Three! We did a similar panel last year; we take a broad theme and make it educational, and then use it as an excuse to cram in all sorts of VGM examples. We had some tech issues and lost some of the recording but we were able to rescue it with a more laid back "part 2" we recorded in the hotel room as a way to fill in gaps and riff for a while. Prepare for launch on this massive double episode clocking in at almost 2 hours! We discuss space, its influence on games and computing, and a wide range of games that have a direct or sometimes tenuous link to space. We've got a ton of music this episode so we hope you enjoy it. Pardon the noise in the background, it was the best we could do with a portable recorder. If you'd like to follow along with our slides that we used during the talk, feel free to click through. If the presentation doesn't show up below, click here. 2025 re-run bonus notes:   This episode is the third in a trilogy of music blocks (parts 1 and 2 were our January and February reruns). Long time listeners may already know what this trilogy is all about, but for those who don't and have been following the reruns, the introduction to this episode finally explains what the trilogy is all about.   So, the fun [for me] question: of the three music blocks in the trilogy, which did you like best (and why), which did you like least (and why), and do you or do you not think I made the right decision bumping "music block A" for "music block B" in C1E41? Let me know at nerd.noise.radio@gmail.com, or by any social media outlet on which we exist. I will genuinely be curious to know what you think. Even to this day in 2025, I *STILL* don't know what to think, personally!   DISCLAIMER: the production value was worse in 2022 when the intro and outro were produced, and substantially worse in 2018 when the music block was produced. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since.   ----------------------------- Original (2022) Show Notes -----------------------------   Today's broadcast is  C1E69 for Mishmash Monday, November 7th, 2022. Music Block produced in GarageBand in macOS 10/19/2018.       IMPORTANT NOTE: The tools and techniques I used back in 2018 in producing the music block were NOT up to my current standards – including featuring less sophisticated fades, more imprecise volume level balancing, less developed track run-order sorting, and even my having used MP3s rather than WAVs in the source production, resulting in a lower-fidelity final product, and further limiting my ability to touch it up after the fact. As such, the production value of this episode will NOT be to par with our current "fresh episodes". But production values aside, the quality of the CONTENT itself, otherwise, I feel, is excellent, and well worth digging up to share with you.....I hope that you'll agree! :-)     You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. 2025 re-run bonus notes:   This rerun is releasing on the precise 5yr anniversary of its original release - in other words, this celebration of St. John's 40th birthday, featuring his wife, both his kids, both his parents, and his brother is re-releasing on St. John's 45th birthday!   Also, it is the second of a trilogy of music blocks (the first of which was last month's rerun), which, if not already clear to long-time listeners of the show will be explained in the intro to the third track of the trilogy, which will be our March 2025 rerun. So stay tuned til next month's rerun!   DISCLAIMER 1: DEAD-NAME ALERT! August is not their birth name, and this episode was recorded prior to their self-discovery, so it uses their birth/dead name. Because of this, I checked with August prior to releasing it to make sure they were okay with it. They said they were okay with it so long as I included the disclaimer - which I would've done anyway! :-D   DISCLAIMER 2: Apologies for some of the off-color jokes and references in the blooper reel. I was not as far along in my personal transformation at the point this episode was released. There are things that made this blooper that would not have today. Therefore, please consider it a piece of history rather than an accurate representation of current perspectives.   DISCLAIMER 3: the production value was much worse back in 2020. So if this is your first time hearing Nerd Noise Radio, please keep in mind that our production values have much improved in the time since.   ----------------------------- Original (2020) Show Notes -----------------------------   Today's broadcast is C1E51 for Mishmash Monday, February 3rd, 2020. Prata (gamla) spel!

“Then, someone found a cure.” Metroid 4. Or Metroid IV. Coming off the back of Wario Land 4, Nintendo R&D 1's crack team set about writing a direct sequel to Super Metroid, but also a title set much later in the timeline, serving eventually as a prequel to Metroid Dread. Leon, Brian, Leah, Rich and community correspondents get their GBAs (or equivalent) on, and brave the claustrophobic tunnels of a biological research centre and the terrifying, corrupt Samus clone, the SA-X. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_544.mp3   Music featured in this issue:1. Today's Broadcast is C1E68 for Theme Thursday, October 27th, 2022. Today's theme is a collection of spooky, dissonant, jarring music for the occasion of Halloween, on a program we're calling "They're Coming to Get You, Barbara" - a "Lost Level", originally intended for C1E37: Halloween 2018, then bumped to C1E48: Halloween 2019, before being bumped indefinitely, and lost to the sands of time....UNTIL NOW! Featuring a music block produced all the way back in July of 2018, making today's broadcast "THE KING OF LOST LEVELS"! And even though the "production quality" of a music block this old is far inferior to our current fresh productions, the "design philosophy" behind this block remains to this day the most sophisticated thing I've ever done. I'll let the intro tell the story!    Track# - Track - Game - System - Composer - Timestamp    01) Intro - 00:00:00  02) Freak you Out - Vay - Sega CD - Shigeki Sako - 00:04:59  03) Kadaver's Base - Skeleton Krew - Genesis - Nathan McCree - 00:06:56  04) Title - Mystix: World of Horror - Atari 8-bit - Falk Büttner - 00:09:36  05) Elm Street - Nightmare on Elm Street - NES - David Wise - 00:11:09  06) Inside Deep Darkness - Lagrange Point - Famicom (VRC7) - Akio Dobashi, Noriyuki Takahashi, Katsuhiro Suzuki, and/or Atsushi Fujio - 00:13:55  07) Twilight - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GameCube / Wii - Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ohta - 00:16:11  08) Section F Suspense - Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus - multi - Mick Gordon - 00:19:32  09) Dark Sanctuary Fortress - Metroid Prime 2 - Game Cube - Kenji Yamamoto - 00:21:41  10) Earth Elemental - Chakan: The Forever Man - Genesis - Mark Miller and/or Jason Scher - 00:23:49  11) Options - Bram Stoker's Dracula - Genesis - Matt Furniss - 00:27:01  12) Gravity Unusual - Strider - Genesis - Junko Tamiya - 00:28:07  13) Triangle - Thumper - PS4 / SWITCH - Brian Gibson - 00:28:54  14) Metroid Prime Battle - Metroid Prime - GameCube - Kenji Yamamoto and/or Kouichi Kyuma - 00:32:40  15) Gore Nest - DOOM (2016) - multi - Mick Gordon - 00:36:25  16) Boss 3 - Legendary Axe - TG16 - Atsumi Chikuma and/or Toshiaki Takimoto - 00:40:14  17) Ghost Valley - Super Mario Kart  - SNES - Soyo Oka - 00:41:38  18) Mojo's Future Crush - X-Men - Genesis - Fletcher Beasley - 00:42:53  19) Bloodpuppets Battle - Splatterhouse 2 - Genesis - Eiko Kaneda - 00:45:53  20) Battle - LaPlace no Ma - PC Engine - Unknown - 00:47:46  21) Endless Pursuer - Snatcher - Sega CD -Konami Kukeiha Club - 00:49:20  22) Crisis - Final Fantasy X - PS2 - Masahashi Hamauzu, Junya Nakano and/or Nobuo Uematsu - 00:51:12  23) Shadow Beast - LoZ: Twilight Princess - GameCube / Wii - Toru Minegishi and/or Asuka Ohta - 00:54:58  24) Beelzebub - Ghouls and Ghosts - Genesis - Tamayo Kawamoto - 00:56:06  25) Naja - Cosmic Carnage - 32X - Hikoshi Hashimoto - 00:57:29  26) Inside a Leviathan Seed - Metroid Prime 3 - Kenji Yamamoto, Minako Hamano, and/or Masaru Tajiima - 00:59:33  27) Agahnim - LoZ: LttP - SNES - Koji Kondo - 01:03:15  28) Spook Mansion - Tiny Toon Adventures - SNES - Kazuhiko Uehara, and/or Yukie Morimoto - 01:04:17  29) Undead - Conker's Bad Fur Day - N64 - Robin Beanland - 01:05:51  30) Maze Music 3 - Kether - CD-I - Santiago J. Another year another MAGWest, we're back in person in person this year exploring the depths of what makes 'water music' with a legend of VGM analysis, 8-bit Music Theory! We put him through the paces as we goof off in our usual Pixelated Audio style. First we 'get to the bottom' of what makes water music sound so wet with some examples and audience commentary, followed by a silly but fun quiz! Check out 8-bit Music Theory's YouTube channel. 8bmt is a music theory expert, drummer, pianist, and all around nice guy who was so kind to join us on the panel! Thanks also to special audience appearances by friends and previous PA guests: Chase Bethea (Eps: #156 and #20) Street Cleaner aka Jesse Bishop (Eps: #150 and #161) As well as comments from new musician friends Audio Mocha and winner of the sad prize, Mason Lieberman! Apologies about the audio quality, but that's live baby! We still hope you enjoy the show as much we did! We did our best to make our show as enjoyable for regular listeners, but we have also included our presentation slides which help enhance the experience. Our Outro Music is Results Parade from the Check Mii Out Channel on the Wii, composed by Kazumi Totaka.    Produced using Ardour 6 / Audacity 3 in Ubuntu Studio [Linux] 22.04    A few important milestones in 2020 / 2021 that I had failed to mention in the intro, but which deserve mentioning:    A) we had our first Ch 1 episode by Hugues (which was also the first Ch 1 in the entire show's history that St. John had absolutely no hand whatsoever in producing. It was a focus on music fromFalcomgames, and was quite succinctly named "The Falcom Episode"    B) We made the migration from producing Nerd Noise Radio in GarageBand via MacOS on a mac mini (and using primarily MP3s in production – mostly through YouTube-to-MP3 websites) to producing NNR in a mix of Audacity andArdourvia Ubuntu Studio (Linux) on a mix of a Dell Latitude Laptop and my custom-built gaming PC (and using primarily WAVs in production – mostly through the youtube-dl command in the Linux terminal). The last episode to be produced in Mac was C1E52: Backtracks (April 1st 2020) and the first episode to be produced in Linux was Channel F: Backtracks – the OTHER 50 (April or May 2020). I feel like the production value on balance is noticeably and appreciably better after the change. And since Hugues is also a Linux user, that means that both sides of our Channel 2 episodes are Linux productions.    You can find the Google Sheets spreadsheet showing St. John's work in arriving at his tracklist for this episode here (WARNING: MILD SPOILERS! Contains track lists for potential future Archive-exclusive SUPER BONUS supplemental music collections:    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X6JpkqiGADAF9sHAsSpgyImjvimVWJv2mOATf5_ZZGc/edit?usp=sharing    You can also find all of our audio episodes on Archive.org as well as the occasional additional release only available there, such as remixes of previous releases and other content.    Our YouTube Channel, for the time being is in dormancy, but will be returning with content, hopefully, in 2022. No podéis perdéroslo!!! Lifelong gamers might like to reminisce about video game consoles past, but just by the numbers, system that got the most play back in the ’90s was the Game Boy. It outsold every console in its day, which means that a lot of players would have played famous video game franchises on the Game Boy before they played it on a standard system. This episode is all about those versions of famous series, and how the composers tasked with translating iconic VGM themes often worked wonders with the Game Boy’s more limited sound technology. There’s the Mario music that gets remade time and time again with each new game, but there’s also a great deal of other tracks that don’t. They're good too, however, and a lot more eclectic than you might expect from ol' Super Mario and friends. This episode — a sequel to Episode 23, linked below — is all that weird stuff from Mario games and their various spinoffs. The Marioverse is wild and strange. Enjoy. Alex:Through the Ages   Larry: Dice City by AEG What it is: "Die Crafting” game where the dice themselves change the city you acquire and build each round. Why it's fun: Die rolling, fun city building, fun puzzle aspects, with accessible but rewarding game play. I.e. looking back over your plans however well they went at the end of a round has been satisfying for me!   So I first acquired and played this one a little over a year ago and am glad that I did, once I played it I decided to get the expansions for more content. But it's not NECESSARY to have a good time with what's in the box. A comparison is the obvious Kingsburg from Fantasy Flight games, whereas that one eschews to the heavier end of the spectrum, this one tackles the same genre of general play in a lighter way TONE wise. The play is varied without as many moving parts, and the colorful and slightly more playful art style backs this up. Verdict: Get this one if you like dice rolling, have or have played Kingsburg and want a different implementation of the same theme (dice rolling city building) and or are looking for another soloable game with depth enough to be fun, without being all that thinky!   Beyond the Box - Sleeves, Mats, Dice, customized. Back in November on Channel 1, we had our first FaceOff Friday episode, and with it, our first Nerd Noise Radio contest! The third person to e-mail nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com would get to have their picks featured in a bonus episode here on Channel F, and if they so chose, even guest host the intro and/or outro of the episode. If the winner would turn out to have a podcast or other project of their own they'd get the opportunity to promote it.   It turns out that winner was Trey Johnson, one of the hosts of the Nintendomain Podcast, as well as being the host of W.A.R.T. Radio, and one of the hosts of The Honey Darling Show. In order to maintain the elements of surprise, I will not say which parts (if any), Trey chose to guest host, and which parts (if any) I hosted as usual. Also, to maintain the element of surprise, the track list below DOES NOT indicate which versions of the tracks Trey selected. In the video version of this episode, the track versions are revealed in the pop-up at the beginning of each track, as well as in the track list in the outro. In the audio version, only in the track list in the outro. Of course, the astute listener will not require either aid to be able to determine which version they are hearing. However, as a general "roadmap" to the episode, the track list (minus version specification) is provided below. This is John’s picks from Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1’s C1E18: Face-Off Friday - vol. 1 (Nov. 2017). I’ve hidden the version details in this track list so as not to “blow the punchline”. However, track list provided at the end of the episode does list the version info. Also, in the case of the YouTube video version, there’s a pop-up for each track, and those provide version info as well. Also, I had one tie, where both (or all) of the versions included in the original episode are still included here. Though not stated explicitly in this track list, the very astute observer will likely be able to glean where that tie is. Please don’t blow it for everyone. ;-)   Track Number / Game Name / Track Name / Composers / Versions List (Obscured) / Timestamp   01: Intro - 00:00 02: Spiderman vs the Sinister Six - Game Theme 1 - David Whittaker - 03:10 03: Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu - Stage 3 - Masakatsu Maekawa - 06:27 04: Genocide 2 - Refreshing Breeze - Hideyuki Shimono and/or Naoyuki Kimora - 08:16 05: LoZ (Either BotW or OoT) - Zora’s Domain (c. In other cases, there may be months in-between new content. Please do not unsubscribe during those drought periods.   Also, a reminder: there is a contest! Third person to e-mail me at nerdnoiseradio@gmail.com will get to curate their own list of picks from Face-Off Friday - vol. 1, and I will produce and release it on Channel F in late January.   Lastly, since this was produced on 12/28/17, it is the one-year anniversary of the passing of my dear friend, Chris Chandler, and thus, this production is dedicated to his memory. To hear a fuller tribute to him, see Nerd Noise Radio - Channel 1 - C1E10: “Mishmash Monday - vol. 1”.   Until next time! Fly the N!!!   Cheers!
