The British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith had to stop running at the European Championships this week because of cramp. She said it was because of her period, and now she's calling for more research into periods and sporting performance. Hepatahlon Olympic Bronze medallist Kelly Sotherton comes onto the programme, as well as Dr Richard Burden who's co-lead on Female Health & Performance at the English Institute of Sport We talk to Sharon Horgan and Eve Hewson, about a new black comedy series they're in called Bad Sisters. It's all about five Irish sisters, and four of them hate their brother-in-law. They're desperate for the fifth sister to be rid of him. What will they do? We speak to Lena Kulakovska, who escaped Ukraine when she was 36 weeks pregnant and is now safely settled in Devon. She's just had a baby daughter, so what are her plans for her and her three young children? We hear once again from listener Titania. She sent us an email when we put the call out to tell us how it feels to reach the age your Mum was when she died. We hear her story. And we start a new series about fangirls. This week we go beyond the stereotype of the hysterical girl who's obsessed with someone famous. We ask instead what does being a fan bring to your life? We're joined by playwright and songwriter, Yve Blake, who's created the award-winning musical FANGIRLS and Hannah Ewens, a writer at Rolling Stone, former fangirl and author of Fangirls: Scenes from Modern Music Culture.

As a heptathlete, Kelly Sotherton had huge success. A triple Olympic medalist, Commonwealth Games gold medalist and with European and world medals. But some of her medals came years and years after she actually competed as the result of some of her opponents failing drug tests retrospectively. We talk about that and her next chapters now, as a coach, as a team leader for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Kelly doesn't hold back and I find that so refreshing. She says what she thinks and it comes from a place of wanting her sport to be in a better place and I think everyone listening to this will get some great nuggets to take away as well as just enjoy her humour, her storytelling and her wisdom. We start with Kelly telling me how she swapped her coach, bringing in the formidable dutch mentor Charles van Commenee a year before the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Being a heptathlete (we imagine; we’re hardly speaking from experience here at Backstraight HQ…) requires not only explosiveness, endurance, technical finesse, and sublime co ordination, but nerves of absolute steel. The psychological challenges of the event have proven a stumbling block for many physically-gifted athletes, and to be able to reach into your bag of tricks and deliver a third round clearance, lifetime best, or gutsy 800 metres at the end of two gruelling days of competition requires the mentality of a supreme competitor. Niamh Emerson, from what we’ve seen so far, is one of those. Bronze at her first major senior championships, gold in Tampere after the most dramatic of 800 metres, and silver behind KJT with the best pentathlon performance ever executed by a teenager: we have grown accustomed to this athlete bringing her A-game every time. Great Britain’s heptathlon heritage is as rich as they come - Mary Rand, Mary Peters, Judy Simpson, Denise Lewis, Kelly Sotherton, Jess Ennis-Hill, and Katarina Johnson Thompson - and it seems increasingly evident that Emerson’s name is destined to join that illustrious roster. A knee tendon tear in Gotzis might have brought her season to an abrupt halt, but her outlook is remarkably positive, with Tokyo drawing ever-closer, and this pause in her meteoric ascent the perfect opportunity to reflect upon her career so far. Friendships with Jess and Kat, working on her explosive power whilst maintaining that fantastic 800 metres of hers, and how on earth she always manages to find that extra centimetre when the pressure’s on: we hope you enjoy this latest interview special. Here’s a seven-event challenge of your own, should you choose: listen to this episode, give it a share to spread the Emerson love, review the Backstraight Boys (& Girl) podcast, let us know your thoughts (@BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas), follow us on Instagram (@BackstraightBoysPodcast), join our Fantasy DL League (PIN: 5533292), and - finally - just keep being the awesome listeners that you already are x

Our first EY Personal Performance Programme podcast is hosted by Mark Clemmit and Scott Ward, plus special guests, who discuss the honest realities of being a professional athlete – from training and competing, to life beyond elite sport. When Orla Met…Kelly Sotherton is a conversation about the ethical challenges faced by athletes in elite sport. Sortherton is one of only five women to have won multiple medals in Olympic heptathlon but did not receive the recognition she deserved until after she had retired when Lyudmila Blonska and Tatyana Chernova were disqualified for doping violations. In this podcast, Kelly talks through her frustrations, doubts, and what it was like to finally be awarded the medals she had trained so hard to achieve. She also discusses her attitudes towards doping today and how she thinks young athletes should be protected in the future.
The popular, critically acclaimed podcast series When Orla Met…is back for a second season, and Orla has once again spoken to a host of top athletes and fascinating characters from the world of sport, to find out more about what drives them to phenomenal lengths and success, what it takes to make it to the very top, what lessons we can learn in dealing with setbacks, and how we can all find inspiration in the pursuit of excellence. In this season, Orla explores themes that expand beyond the boundaries of sport - the role of women in society, what kind of personality traits it takes to excel, how we can train our brains to be more successful in our own lives, the universality of cheating. Featuring, among others, Tour de France winner and BBC Sports Personality of the Year favourite Geraint Thomas, triple European Champion sprinter and fellow Sports Personality of the Year front-runner Dina Asher-Smith, world-renowned psychiatrist and author of 'The Chimp Paradox', Dr Steve Peters, Team Sky and British Cycling head coach Rod Ellingworth, triple Olympic medalist Kelly Sotherton and Olympic hockey Champion Sam Quek. It's a podcast for anyone interested in stories, in the fortitude and frailties of those who push themselves to the limit. It's a chance to get to know some of the biggest names and brains in sport along with Orla, and to learn a little more of the motivation, fears and discipline that drive the ordinary to become extraordinary, to become the very best.
