Have you ever really thought about your kidneys? About what they do? About what happens when they fail? They are two small organs, quietly filtering waste, balancing fluids, and keeping you alive—until they don't.There is no cure for kidney disease. Dialysis helps you wait, but it isn't a solution. A transplant gives you a second chance, but not forever. So what happens when that second chance runs out?Today's conversation is personal. In December 2000, my sister gave me the greatest gift. She gave me a kidney. But a transplant isn't a cure. It's a borrowed moment. And sometimes, that moment runs out.Cristina Howorun knows this better than most. She's an award-winning journalist and documentary producer and someone who has spent her career shining a light on the stories that need to be told. She is also a fellow kidney transplant recipient. And now, she is facing the unthinkable: her kidney has failed, and she is waiting once again for another chance at life. Our stories are different, but many of our experiences are the same. In this deeply personal episode, we discuss:The realities of kidney disease and why transplant isn't a cureThe challenges and gifts of life as a transplant recipientWhat it's like to live on dialysis while still trying to live a full lifeThe myths, misunderstandings, and hidden struggles of organ failureWhy organ donation matters and how you can save livesMarch is Kidney Month. We've heard a lot this week about how people are freaking out over seeing drones in the air. There are over a million drones registered in the United States. Those who attend will have the opportunity to visit the Old Beaufort Hunt. Old Beaufort Hunt was a classic, English-style foxhunting club founded in 1929 by landowner Ehrman Mitchell in what was known as the Linglestown Valley. "And frankly, that organization is still in existence. They hunt in other parts of central Pennsylvania now because because the lingers Hound Valley is so built up. But the first house on the tour where we go for orders is called Fox Run Manor. And that's right in Beaufort Estates. And it dates from the 1930s, I believe. It's a wonderful colonial revival house and it looks like the Beaufort Estates area would have looked back in the 1920s, "said David Morrison, Executive Director of the Historic Harrisburg Association. This is the 33rd annual event that kicks off the holiday season while fundraising for local charity. "It's a progressive dinner and it's a very formal affair. We have orders in one house, dinner and another and dessert in a third house. And all of our guests are are chauffeured in motor coaches from start to finish so they don't have to drive at all to go to these houses. And it's catered. We have wonderful caterers and wine pairings, live music at every property, and the properties themselves are just spectacular, "said Morrison. Did you know you could have kidney disease and not even know it? It happened to a family member of mine, and it nearly took his life. Please join me in speaking with Nanette Zumwalt and Mary Beth Barry, kidney recipients and ambassadors of the CORE Kidney program, which raises awareness about kidney disease as well as organ donation. Nanette received her kidney from a living donor, while Mary Beth's donor was deceased. Both women were in dire need of a kidney transplant, and they talk about their unique journeys with us. They also want to educate people about getting screened for kidney disease when they go for their yearly physical through a simple blood test. Kidney disease is a leading cause of death in the U.S., with an estimated 35-million people estimated to have chronic kidney disease. It's critical to know about your kidney health, how and what to eat to keep your kidney functioning, and well discuss that during our interview. This is a topic a lot of people don't think about, so we're here to learn more and get the conversation going. Please join #DeborahKobyltLIVE on all video and audio podcast platforms, and invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to have you join us.

The most commonly used equation that determines someone's kidney function includes a binary male-female sex coefficient. But what does this mean for the care of transgender, gender-diverse, and nonbinary people? Cameron Whitley, an associate professor with kidney failure experience, and researchers Keila Turino Miranda, a PhD student, and Dr. David Collister, a nephrologist, shed light on this important topic. Dr. David Collister (he/him) is a Kidney Doctor, Clinician-Scientist and Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta. He has a PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. His research program is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Kidney Foundation of Canada and focuses on randomized controlled trials of interventions for uremic symptoms, cannabinoids, the responsiveness of uremic symptoms to the initiation of dialysis, metabolomics, proteomics and the intersection of gender diversity and kidney disease. Keila Turino Miranda (she/her) is a first year PhD Student in the Cardiovascular Health and Autonomic Regulation Laboratory at McGill University. Ms. Turino Miranda's work focuses on understanding and addressing the unique healthcare needs and disparities faced by transgender, gender-diverse, and non-binary (TGD) individuals in the realms of nephrology and cardiology using a patient-oriented approach. Cameron T. Whitley, Ph.D. (he/they) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western Washington University. He studies issues concerning the environment, human-animal relationships, and transgender-affirming medicine. He got involved with studying transgender-affirming medicine when he was diagnosed with kidney failure and received a kidney transplant while writing his dissertation. Through this process, he coauthored one of the first articles addressing the discrepancies in evaluating kidney function for transgender people. He has over five dozen publications featured in places like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Academic Emergency Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, and Annual Review of Sociology. An Unexpected Career Path and Lessons from the Business Side of Medicine with Dr. Shaminder Gupta In this episode, Dr. Shaminder (Shammi) Gupta joins David to discuss his career path, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on that path, and what he is learning from being a business executive as well as a clinician. Shammi begins with his background – where he grew up, what got him interested in medicine why he gravitated to internal medicine & nephrology. He explains why his first job out of training was not a fit for him and how hurricane Katrina changed his path completely – as it did for many living in New Orleans at the time – opening up a career path he would not have considered otherwise. Shammi also covers how he built a significant dialysis practice in a smaller town setting, became president of the Kidney Foundation, and built a reputation throughout the state. This led to his practice being acquired by Monogram Health, where he works today as an executive and clinician. Shammi then shares what he is learning from the “business side” of medicine, as he builds out a multi-state medical platform for kidney health, and describes the value CEOs see in physicians who can communicate well and know their field of medicine intimately. Next, David gets Shammi's insights on wealth management, including building the right advisor team and why to potentially change advisors as you grow, and Shammi concludes with his three pieces of advice for fellow physicians, especially those starting out.
