As workers across the country return to their jobs for a new year, there's growing calls to give people the right to ignore their bosses after hours. A new policy document by the Council of Trade Unions is advocating for an amendment to the Employment Relations Act, off the back of Australia implementing 'right to disconnect' laws in 2024. Council of Trade Unions president Sandra Grey says many Kiwis workers are feeling pressured to take on unpaid overtime, and changes need to be made. "It's our time if we're not rostered to work and we should be able to say - actually, I'm not coming in on my day off, do the meeting on a day when I'm not rostered to work." In this episode of Inside IR, Steve Bell and Natalie Gaspar explore the new "right to disconnect" in Australia, which allows employees to refuse to monitor or respond to work-related communications outside of their ordinary hours, unless it is unreasonable to do so. Steve and Nat explore the implications of these new laws, including the role of the Fair Work Commission, how the laws intersect with broader obligations to manage psychosocial risk, the increasing awareness among workers of their rights to reasonable working hours, and the role of employers in managing these expectations. Recorded 23 August 2024
Australia recently gave employees the right to ignore their boss outside of ordinary work hours. The law is meant to protect the health and wellbeing of workers and reduce stress and overwork, allowing for better work-life balance in a time when the world is more hyper-connected than ever before. But what role does corporate culture and employee satisfaction play in financial performance, and will financiers actually consider the new law when making investment decisions?Today, we are joined by Emma Pringle, Head of ESG and Portfolio Manager at Maple-Brown Abbott, a boutique firm with around $9 billion in assets under management.Pringle will explain how investors and asset managers respond when workplaces are exposed as dysfunctional or 'toxic' - and what impact this has on business performance. The host of The Greener Way is Rose Mary Petrass, senior journalist at FS Sustainability.
Many countries, including the most recent, Australia, are adopting "right to disconnect" laws that protect workers' personal time from being infringed by employers. Should the U.S. follow suit? Kevin O'Leary, known as "Mr. Wonderful," made headlines by opposing these laws, but isn't he so far up the corporate ladder that he doesn't face the same pressures of having his downtime interrupted? In today's smartphone-driven world, it's crucial to define clear boundaries for when we're off-duty—not just from employers but also from clients, customers, and the public. Humans weren't designed to work 24/7, and perhaps AI can help us create a society that respects personal time.

Good ads heighten the experience of Instagram, I would argue. The good ads on Instagram make my experience of Instagram better. I think Instagram is a little bit worse if it has no ads because I discover things.” - Phillip{00:29:35} - “In my mind, this is as good as [AI music] will ever be. There's nothing remarkable or memorable about any of it. And I almost feel the same way about all AI-generated content. AI-generated art, AI-generated writing. There's nothing memorable or remarkable about it ever. The memorable thing is the discourse around it.” - Phillip{01:04:29} - “We are getting to a point now where we're hitting Norbert Wiener's prediction around "the world of the future will be an even more demanding struggle against the limitations of our intelligence, not a comfortable hammock in which we can lie down to be waited upon by our robot slaves." It's been a huge week for music cos the Super Bowl is on, and the biggest platforms on screen and off have been dominated by artists. Beyoncé stole the show by dropping her highly anticipated country era, with two new songs and an album to follow. The response has been interesting, and open up a conversation around who 'owns' country and who are the gatekeepers to the scene. This viral moment was a splash in a big pool of Taylor Swift's media domination; likewise, she used the Grammys stage to announce her new album and her dream run of record breaking, awards, album sales (and a Super Bowl win for her beau) has kept her in the headlines non-stop. As she arrives in Australia for her biggest shows ever we dare to discuss: are we getting a little Tay Tay fatigue? How are we complicit in this clickbait era? And when will the backlash begin?Alicia Keys has also been in the headlines, after her stunning performance at the halftime show revealed a smoothing out of her opening bung note, in post.
