Today, we're diving into one of the most misunderstood, wrongly demonized, and yet most important pieces of your nutrition strategy: PROTEIN.We're going deep into:Why so many people still believe protein is dangerous — especially for your kidneysWhere these outdated beliefs came fromThe role of protein in muscle gain, fat loss, aging, and long-term healthWhy the RDA is setting you up for failureWhat YOU can do today to get the benefits of a high-protein lifestyleResources:1. High-Protein Diets and Kidney Function in Healthy Adults:Study: A Systematic Review of Renal Health in Healthy Individuals Consuming High Protein DietsFindings: This review analyzed multiple randomized controlled trials and found that increased protein intake led to higher glomerular filtration rates (GFR), all within normal kidney function ranges. The data suggest that higher protein consumption does not adversely affect kidney health in healthy adults. Study: Effect of a High-Protein Diet on Kidney Function in Healthy Adults: Results from the OmniHeart TrialFindings: This study concluded that a healthy diet rich in protein increased estimated GFR. However, it noted that the long-term effects of high-protein diets on kidney health remain uncertain.2. Protein Intake and Sarcopenia (Muscle Loss) in Older Adults:Study: Protein Intake and Sarcopenia in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-AnalysisFindings: The meta-analysis indicated that older adults with sarcopenia consumed significantly less protein than their non-sarcopenic peers, suggesting that inadequate protein intake may be associated with muscle loss in the elderly. Study: Role of Dietary Protein in the Sarcopenia of AgingFindings: The study suggests that moderately increasing daily protein intake beyond 0.8 g/kg/day may enhance muscle protein anabolism, potentially mitigating age-related muscle loss. Protein & Kidney Health in Healthy IndividualsSystematic Review: High Protein Diets & Renal FunctionConclusion: No negative effects on kidney function in healthy adults.

Dr. Valentin Fuster discusses the February 2025 issue of JACC, which focuses on advancements in heart failure research. The discussion covers five key sections: heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, cardiac amyloidosis, standardization of kidney function, and ICD therapy for primary prevention in heart failure patients. Experts explore emerging therapies, diagnostic thresholds, and the potential impact of blood pressure and genetics on patient outcomes, underscoring the need for comprehensive approaches in managing these complex conditions.
Nephrologist Manjula Tamura discusses the downsides of kidney dialysis, especially for old or frail patients. Her field has set its sights on offering alternatives, including supportive medical management without dialysis, dialysis in increments, wearable artificial kidneys, and transplanted kidneys from genetically modified pigs – in addition to advances in preventive care that can help humans avoid kidney failure in the first place. Dialysis can extend life, she says, but it is a lifestyle change. The goal is to ensure that every patient's choice aligns with their values and life goals, Tamura tells host Russ Altman in this episode of Stanford Engineering's The Future of Everything podcast.Have a question for Russ? In EPISODE 182 OF GROWING OLDER LIVING YOUNGER, Dr. Thomas Weimbs and Dr. Gillian Lockitch discuss the prevalence and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD), which affects one in seven adults in the U.S. Dr. Weimbs highlights the importance of diet and lifestyle in managing CKD, particularly through ketogenic metabolic therapy. He explains that ketosis, induced by a low-carbohydrate diet, can slow the progression of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) by reducing inflammation and improving kidney function. Dr. Weimbs describes the Ren-Nu program, a three-month nutrition and lifestyle intervention for kidney disease patients, which has shown significant improvements in kidney function and pain reduction for many participants. Whether you're affected by kidney disease, have a family history, or are simply interested in how nutrition and epigenetic strategies can support healthy aging, this episode will provide invaluable insights. Thomas Weimbs PhD is a leading expert in kidney disease research. He is a professor at the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB) where he directs a research laboratory focused on polycystic kidney disease. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Cologne, Germany, and then conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California in San Francisco. In 1999, as an assistant professor, he started his first independent research laboratory at the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. There, his research on polycystic kidney disease began with the support of a local family affected by PKD and whose family foundation still supports PKD research in Dr. Weimbs' lab today. In 2005, Dr. Weimbs moved his laboratory back to California to join the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology at UCSB. The laboratory studies molecular mechanisms underlying PKD with an emphasis towards developing new therapies. Recent research has led to the discovery that dietary interventions and natural metabolites strongly slow PKD progression in animal models. This led to the launch of Santa Barbara Nutrients with the goal to make these approaches available for the nutritional management of PKD. Hello everyone, In today's episode, I delved into a simple yet often overlooked aspect of weight loss and energy enhancement: hydration with water. As a board-certified family and lifestyle medicine physician, I've seen firsthand how proper hydration can transform lives. Here's a summary of what we covered: Key Points Discussed: Cellular Hydration and Metabolism: Proper hydration aids cellular functions, enhancing metabolic activities like protein synthesis and lipid metabolism, which boosts energy expenditure. Thermic Effect of Water: Drinking water temporarily increases energy expenditure as the body works to heat the ingested water to body temperature. Studies show that 500 mLs of water can increase metabolic rate by about 30% for over an hour. Hormonal Balance and Appetite Regulation: Adequate hydration helps regulate hunger and satiety hormones, preventing the misinterpretation of thirst signals as hunger, thus reducing caloric intake. Kidney Function and Toxin Removal: Hydration supports kidney function, aiding in the efficient removal of waste products and toxins, reducing the risk of kidney stones, and maintaining metabolic balance. Influence on Physical Performance: Proper hydration is crucial for maintaining blood volume, muscle function, and thermoregulation during physical activity, thereby enhancing physical performance and calorie expenditure. Practical Tips for Staying Hydrated: Increase Daily Water Intake: Aim for 8 to 10 ounces per hour during the first 8 to 10 hours of your day. Start Your Day with Water: Begin your morning with a glass of water to set the right tone for the day. Enhance Water Flavor: If you dislike plain water, consider adding frozen fruit or opting for herbal teas. Consume Water-Rich Foods: Include fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content in your diet. Drink Slowly: Avoid gulping down water to prevent frequent urination, especially at night. Additional Advice: Monitor Your Symptoms: If you experience persistent fatigue or other issues, consult your doctor. Avoid Overhydration: Spread your water intake throughout the day to avoid hyponatremia, a condition caused by drinking too much water too quickly. I also shared insights on my signature framework for weight loss and metabolism mastery, and how I've helped thousands of people achieve their health goals. What's it like to have an autoimmune disease, resulting in borderline kidney failure and be on the verge of needing a kidney transplant? It must have been really scary to deal with. That's what today's guest Rhonda faced. She had just been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called IgA nephropathy which significantly impairs kidney function, and in her acute hospitalization, it was found that her Glomerular Filtration Rate (GRF) had already dropped to the super low level of 12. She was about to be put on the transplant list, but she wasn't even 50 years old yet and still had a full life ahead of her, not to mention another grandchild on the way to love. Yet, following the advice of her kidney doctor, she decided to give plant-based eating a try…and what results she experienced within just 6 months of making this change! Hear about the health transformation Rhonda experienced in part 1 of this Guest Interview. Not only did her kidney function improve naturally, her HbA1c dropped drastically from 8.2 to 5.4, her mental health got better and she went way down in pills. The most commonly used equation that determines someone's kidney function includes a binary male-female sex coefficient. But what does this mean for the care of transgender, gender-diverse, and nonbinary people? Cameron Whitley, an associate professor with kidney failure experience, and researchers Keila Turino Miranda, a PhD student, and Dr. David Collister, a nephrologist, shed light on this important topic. Dr. David Collister (he/him) is a Kidney Doctor, Clinician-Scientist and Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta. He has a PhD in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. His research program is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Kidney Foundation of Canada and focuses on randomized controlled trials of interventions for uremic symptoms, cannabinoids, the responsiveness of uremic symptoms to the initiation of dialysis, metabolomics, proteomics and the intersection of gender diversity and kidney disease. Keila Turino Miranda (she/her) is a first year PhD Student in the Cardiovascular Health and Autonomic Regulation Laboratory at McGill University. Ms. Turino Miranda's work focuses on understanding and addressing the unique healthcare needs and disparities faced by transgender, gender-diverse, and non-binary (TGD) individuals in the realms of nephrology and cardiology using a patient-oriented approach. Cameron T. Whitley, Ph.D. (he/they) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Western Washington University. He studies issues concerning the environment, human-animal relationships, and transgender-affirming medicine. He got involved with studying transgender-affirming medicine when he was diagnosed with kidney failure and received a kidney transplant while writing his dissertation. Through this process, he coauthored one of the first articles addressing the discrepancies in evaluating kidney function for transgender people. He has over five dozen publications featured in places like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Academic Emergency Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, and Annual Review of Sociology. Certain medical instruments have built-in methods of correcting for race. They're based on the premise that Black bodies are inherently different from White bodies. The tool that measures kidney function, for example, underestimates how severe some Black patients' kidney disease is, and prevents them from getting transplants. Medical students and doctors have been trying to do away with race correction tools once and for all. And they're starting to see some success. About Innate: How Science Invented the Myth of Race “Correcting Race” is Episode 9 of Innate: How Science Invented the Myth of Race, a podcast and magazine project that explores the historical roots and persistent legacies of racism in American science and medicine. Published through Distillations, the Science History Institute's highly acclaimed digital content platform, the project examines the scientific origins of support for racist theories, practices, and policies. In honor of March being National Kidney Month and the repeated requests we've received for this topic, today we will discuss foods to eat for good kidney function. One in seven American adults have chronic kidney disease, but many don't even realize it until it is in an advanced stage because the signs aren't obvious. Early detection is the best for treating kidney issues and for preventing toxins that can lead to other health conditions such as gout, bone disease, and heart disease. Today we want to discuss the major sources for kidney disease and help you understand that what you are eating can play a part in how well your kidneys function.

It seems like "experts" from many backgrounds seem to agree on the importance of protein, especially as one ages. Meeting a leucine threshold in a meal seems to be a common consensus as well. I love meat and hit that target with no issue 3x per day. However, what I've never heard any of these protein experts talk about is a "stimulus" threshold for MPS. They all talk about weight lifting being a MPS signal but I've never heard of a minimum required dose. I was wondering if in your reading/learning you've heard anyone talk about the minimum "strength workout" needed to initiate MPS. Or is it relative? Like my doing 2 sets of max rep pull ups gets a little MPS going but an hour long leg workout with leg press, deadlifts, RDLs, split squats triggers more? Any insights here would be appreciated! Thanks :) Early onset Parkinsons and a different approach Amy says: First I want to say I love you guys. I'm always trying to obtain more knowledge in the health and wellness field as a Firefighter/Paramedic and Fitness Coach as a part time. Your show is easy and fast knowledge. Plus I love LMNT. The chocolate medley is my favorite. Now my question. Recently my husband had a hand tremor experience. Early in the morning in bed where it woke me up. He didn't mention it for a couple days but when he did I realized it concerned him as well. He is your typical male that doesn't want to seek medical advice and had to be dragged to the doctor years ago when I suspected a DVT. We found out he had the largest his physician had seen from his ankle to his hip and 3 PEs. ( Pre covid, no he is not vaccinated) we found out it was a genetic disorder. Since the tremor, in my own research I feel like he has a lot of early signs for Parkinsons which I may be me jumping ( but so was the DVT at the time) but this is so concerning. We take a more functional approach to our health and I was wondering your thoughts on that for Parkinsons. I have a previous client where we found weight training really helped his tremors but also any emotional response could make it worse. My husband is healthy, 45, weight trains multiple times a week and does a lot of zone 2 training. Only medical history is the clotting disorder for which he takes Eliquis. Sorry for the long question. Thanks in advance. Kidney function and protein with age Dawn says: Hello Robb and Nicki, A friend of mine in her late 40's is following a mostly paleo diet and has been increasing animal proteins and working on resistance training to increase muscle mass the last few years to help with healthy aging, glucose control, maintaining function etc. She has recently started including creatine supplementation to help with brain and muscle function as per all sorts of recommendations from various ppl in the healthy aging and menopause space. She has relatively low body fat (visible abs and shoulder muscles) and has only a couple drinks a week. She uses LMNT daily. She just received blood work results showing higher than normal creatinine and ALT levels and is wondering whether to stop creatine supplements. Also, she will be booking in to see a renal doc to discuss further but is worried because all conventional advise for kidney disease Appears to be: go on a low protein diet, eat vegetable oils, “healthy” whole grains etc….which completely flies in the face of her experience of better health and body comp for years on a more ancestral style diet with increasing protein over time. She has experienced several UTIs in the last year which could be due to estrogen dropping post hysterectomy (therefore she is menopausal) and recently had covid…so there is a history now of urinary infection AND it seems that some people experience renal issues post virus. Any suggestions on protein and creatine? Resources we can research so she can make informed choices? It's scary that the conventional dietary changes are totally opposite what someone needs to do to retain good muscle mass as one ages, and they seem to promote higher glucose levels over time which we know will lead to diabetes. Thanks so much for any light you can shed. It can be difficult when you are trying to buck the normal trend of decline with middle age by doing seemingly the opposite of what the doctors tell us to do. Dr. Michelle Gumz is an associate professor at the University of Florida. Her research focuses on the kidney's circadian clock and its relationship to cardiovascular health. In this episode, Dr. Gumz details how the circadian clock provides a mechanism for predictive homeostasis that directly impacts cardiovascular and kidney function. She also explains why normal sleep patterns are critical to long-term health outcomes. Dr. Gumz has a long-time interest in the molecular control of renal function. The Gumz laboratory is investigating the role of the molecular circadian clock in the kidney with the long-term goal of determining how the clock in the kidney contributes to the control of blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health. Aldosterone is a mineralocorticoid hormone that regulates sodium balance and blood pressure. As a graduate student, Dr. Gumz was the first to identify the circadian clock gene Period 1 as an aldosterone target. She has subsequently shown that Period 1 regulates the transcription of alpha ENaC, the aldosterone-regulated and rate-limiting subunit of the epithelial sodium channel. New areas of study include cross-talk between the kidney clock and other tissue clocks and sex differences in the function of Period 1 and Bmal1, another critical core clock gene. That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem "Stress is your brain and body preparing you to do something effortful." Dr. Alex Auerbach “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming, you're a swimmer, if you're driving, you're a driver. If you're leading, you're by definition, a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to decide or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day! That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Miray's experience combining Vivoo with saliva and CGM testing to cross-check everything. The fact that 60% of Americans are not meeting their daily magnesium intake and 70% are not for calcium. How important it is to count our nutrients and not just calories in some individuals' cases. Power Quotes From The Show Common Nutrient Deficiencies in the USA "Around 60% of Americans are not meeting their daily magnesium intake and it is 70% for calcium. Please be mindful of what you are eating. As well as counting calories, if you are doing that, try to count nutrients as well because as humans are living longer, we need to take better care of ourselves. Many of us will easily live to be 90 years old or older if we continue to take good care of our health. It's important that we have good health as we get older so that we're not in bad shape, barely walking, and suffering for decades. These nutrient deficiencies are really, really important and we need to keep an eye on them on a regular basis." - Miray Tayfun Vivoo's Positive Encouragement for Lifestyle Change "I want people to be encouraged by their Vivoo results. If their results are above average, instead of panicking, I want them to see it as an opportunity to make a change to improve their results. The language we use on the app is not rigid but friendly because we don't want to make people feel sad or punished if they're not hydrated but rather encouraged. People don't tend to have a serious lack of information about how to improve their health but they have a lack of motivation and we want to help them with that. A health product and app should be supportive, not make you feel bad." - Miray Tayfun Living Life Well Every Day "For me, wellness is listening to your body's voice; listening to your mind's voice.
