Carrie Dils joined Jonathan Denwood and Kim Shivler for Episode 279 of the WP-Tonic Podcast. A long-time, successful WordPress freelancer, Carrie has launched a platform to help other freelancers find success in business. In this episode, Carrie shares her top tips for creating a successful freelancing business including Small Business Administration Resources and using clarity.fm to charge for consulting phone calls. Carrie Dils began working at Starbucks. She had a vision open her own coffee shop, and thought why not learn the ins and outs of how to make coffee and get paid to do it. But soon, she realized she didn’t want to depend on others for success. Not that her team wasn’t great, but she was done trading hours for dollars. For her birthday, Carrie’s dad signed her up for an annual subscription to Lynda. She started taking classes taught by Morten Rand-Hendriksen which is where her career started rolling as a freelance web developer. Now, she’s been consulting and educating for 3-4 years. Working for Lynda, she travels to California to record lessons around 3 times a year. She began blogging tutorials on her website as a way to give back to the community. The WordPress community is very generous with learning, and the positive affirmations and people she is able to help through teaching are strong motivators for her. https://carriedils.com/ https://twitter.com/cdils https://www.lynda.com/Carrie-Dils/965233-1.html

From large background videos that don’t load well on phones to content that is designed for a print layout not online layout, we still see major issues trying to access websites from a mobile device. John Locke’s top tips included: Pay attention to the typography. He finds many sites with small fonts that are not legible on mobile. He recommends font sizes of at least 16 pixels. Tap targets, those buttons you must tap with your finger on a mobile device, need to be big enough to tap on.

This week Benjamin Ilfeld from 10up.com joined Jonathan Denwood and his co-host Kim Shivler to discuss Google Analytics. Benjamin is the Lead Audience and Revenue Strategist at 10up. They focus on the audience and revenue side of the business for their customers. Benjamin explained that while Google Analytics is a tool to provide insights into traffic visiting your site, it’s like a Swiss Army Knife that isn’t specific to one need. It’s generic and to get the most from it, you need to configure it to meet your needs. For example, if you are running an eCommerce store, you want to filter out bot traffic to make sure anyone visiting is a potential customer. Ben also recommended configuring views and filters in order to fine tune what you see. He always recommends creating a test view that is your sandbox. Use this like a test or staging area before putting anything into a live view. Once it’s live it will show up in your reports. Google Analytics and other tools give you insights into your data, but what is really important is to set goals and have a measurement plan. The tools them provide the measurements, but if you don’t know your goals and what you want to measure, the numbers don’t matter.

This week’s WP-Tonic Roundtable (Jason Marlowe, Mendel Kurland, Kim Shivler and leader Jonathan Denwood), considered different types of Marketing Automation. While many people think of Email Automation, Marketing Automation covers more than email. As Jason pointed out, it’s taking any process in your business and automating it. Mendel likens automation to a trash compactor. It condenses the time you have to manually spend on tasks so that you have time to do other things within your business. We discussed several Email Automation tools including Drip https://www.drip.co/ and Active Campaign http://www.activecampaign.com/ along with MailChimp https://mailchimp.com/ which now includes automation services in their free accounts. Text options and text messaging automation were also highlighted since these are growing in popularity. Mendel has been actively tracking his traffic and email options for his site https://hikingwithgeeks.com/. He considers how visitors interact with the site and measures the effects of his email campaigns. Big takeaway is to set a goal and measure your results. “Don’t spend money or time, indiscriminately on something you haven’t set a goal for and can’t measure.”
