This week Adan Fout, Sallie Goetsch, Chris Badgett, Adam Preiser, and Morten Rand-Hendriksen joined host Jonathan Denwood to discuss Tips and Tricks for Creating Successful Information Products. The biggest key is to create quality content that provides value for your customer. The group mentioned sometimes you give your email to someone and find that the giveaway is fluff. One question arose on whether there are specific types of content that are better suited for information products and if a specific length is recommended. The clear answer was that different audiences may prefer different types and length of content, and that the situation for content may change this interest. Some people like to read content, and the current “long reads” trend gives people an easy way to consume written content in a distraction free environment. Many times when people want to learn something fast, they may be looking for a quick video. On a long run or car trip, an hour+ podcast or even audiobook may be preferred.
On today’s roundtable, Sallie Goetsch and John Locke joined the show’s co-host Kim Shivler to share tips for making your websites mobile friendly along with recent news stories. While mobile responsive design has been around for many years, and you would think everyone was designing this way by now, we find that many people still ignore it. From large background videos that don’t load well on phones to content that is designed for a print layout not online layout, we still see major issues trying to access websites from a mobile device. John Locke’s top tips included: Pay attention to the typography. He finds many sites with small fonts that are not legible on mobile. He recommends font sizes of at least 16 pixels. Tap targets, those buttons you must tap with your finger on a mobile device, need to be big enough to tap on.
This week’s roundtable gathered to discuss Design Elements for your WordPress website including selecting a color scheme, and fonts. Sallie Goetsch, Adam Preiser, Kim Shivler, and special guest Amanda McCoy joined host Jonathan Denwood for a lively discussion with plenty of links to resources to help you with your own site. Amanda McCoy spoke at WordCamp Sacramento 2017 on color palette selection, so we invited her along to share some insights. She works in both web and print design, and likes to select colors that fit the project. If you take a look at her website, you’ll see what she means. Her portfolio shows plenty of examples where the colors set the tone of her message. She also says to keep it simple for your website. You only need a few colors. Adam has several tutorials on fonts and colors. One of his pet peeves is when he can tell, at a glance, what WordPress theme people are using because they haven’t taken the time to change default fonts and colors.
This week’s, WP-Tonic Roundtable (Lee Jackson, Sallie Goetsch, Adam Preiser, Jason Marlowe, Kim Shivler and leader Jonathan Denwood) discussed the different things people mean when they talk about Membership Websites. We covered meanings from content restricted areas to business directories and social networking platforms. With so many different meanings of the term, we delved into the importance of discovery calls with clients when they ask for a membership website. When the requirement is content restriction, the group covered plugins including RestrictContent Pro and MemberPress, and Lee Jackson explained how in many circumstances, restricting content may be better handled with simple coding than the complexity of a membership plugin.
