Producer and filmmaker Chadd Harbold returns to the show to discuss Terrence Malick's awe-inspiring WWII epic The Thin Red Line. The film marked Malick's return to the director's chair after a 20 year absence from filmmaking and features an ensemble cast of dozens of recognizable faces, including many massive stars of the period reduced to mere minutes of screen time and a handful of lines of dialogue. Based on the James Jones novel of the same name, the movie is unlike any war film ever made and showcases Malick venturing deeper into his style of meandering camerawork, striking images of the natural world, and contemplative monologues delivered in voiceover (occasionally by actors we seldom see onscreen). We discuss the storied, decade-long journey of getting The Thin Red Line to screen, a process that involved Malick spending heaps of cash satisfying every one of his fleeting whims and every actor in Hollywood vying for a spot on the film's massive roster characters. Then, we discuss the film's juxtaposition of horrific war imagery with breathtaking shots of wildlife and nature - a visual contrast that enhances Malick's existential preoccupations with the nature of good and evil, darkness and light in the world. Finally, we praise Malick's working method, and how his decision to "shoot everything" allows his films to be born in the edit, often taking on thematic and visual nuances that were far from intentional on set, on the day. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is the fifth film in the Hunger Games franchise and is set sixty-four years before the events of the first film.  It explores the events that eventually lead a young Coriolanus Snow down the path to becoming the tyrannical leader of Panem.  With the tenth annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow becomes alarmed when he's assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird from District 12.  Uniting their instincts for showmanship and political savvy, they race against time to ultimately reveal who's a songbird and who's a snake. This week we're using the guidance of the Knight of Cups Tarot card to help us better connect, trust and follow our intuitive compass. We all have intuition but not all of us take the time to listen to it or explore the direction it's pointing us in. We'll use the support of the Knight of cups to chat about what intuition is, what it feels like and how you can start to trust your intuitive compass more. Tarot Journal Prompts Prompt 1: Think of a goal you're trying to achieve right now. Write it down in your journal and then underneath write about how that goal makes you feel. Do you feel frustrated? Excited? Does there feel like there's a lot of empty space between you and the goal? Does it feel within touching distance? Really start to settle into the energy that is created when you bring that goal forward. Prompt 2: If you could take one single step towards that big dream goal right now, what would that step be? Prompt 3: Taking into account where you are in this present moment, whether it's physically, emotionally, or spiritually, what is stopping you from being able to take that step and are these blocks caused by external energies or are they self-created e.g. self-limiting beliefs etc. Prompt 4: Imagine someone else has come to you and explained that those blocks are standing in their way to achieving their goal, what solutions could you suggest to them? Write them all down and then review them, pay attention to your body when you read them back to yourself, do any of these solutions feel like they have a stronger pull than the others? Do any of them just seem like the right solution but you've no facts to back it up? Really feel your way through the list. On this week's annotated deep dive, The Cultists present Terrence Malick's ‘Knight of Cups' (2015). Often regarded as a particularly “tough watch” (even by those who enjoy the film), Cups is a slow and mangled feast of images that will delight some and utterly baffle others. Adding to the challenge is that grasping the more concrete structure of the film demands a familiarity with a rather eclectic back catalogue of source materials that range from a working knowledge of the tarot's major arcana, to John Bunyan's 17th century allegorical novel, a spattering of gnostic hymns, and the regret-fueled works of Kierkegaard. And all this to tell what is essentially the lead-up to the beginning of a story that we don't even get to see. In other words, this film is incredibly cruel. But it's also beautiful. Deep Dive's Include: The film's production and the truly unique filming strategies of Terrence Malick; The adapted source material of The Pilgrim's Progress and The Hymn of the Pearl; Gnosticism (or why everyone is stuck in the water when they really just want to get closer to the sky); The Knight of Cups and the film's other Tarot chapter cards; existential angst and other Kierkegaardian philosophy; the statistical likelihood of an earthquake wiping out Los Angeles, and why, according to one of the film's selected source materials, Christian Bale's "Rick" is the lesser, memory-addled and drugged-up twin brother of Jesus….
