John and Derek had a chance to spend some time with a true renaissance cowboy: Las Vegas's own Stu Folsom. Stu is the founder of the killer crossover thrash band Spiritworld, an author and an all around great dude. They touch on Stu's early days in the rodeo, his vision for the trilogy of death-western albums, his book Godlessness and his lovely lady getting smashed in the face by a windmilling audience member. Linkin Park's third album arrived after delays and side projects from members of the band, but arrived with “honed, metallic pop with a hip hop stride and a wake-up kick”.“Minutes” is a roller coaster of emotion, including vicious anger, political rants, forlorn musings on lost love, and a heartbreaking final request that came to pass far too soon.Today's root beer is Boot's Sarsaparilla. Is the world ready for pipe-smoking scientists and rebellious kids? Right-oh, daddy-o!
Like good Midwesterners, we discuss the weather...then move on to the economics of the Denver metro area. Steve's air conditioner conked out, Brandon's kids are on the road. On to the movie, The Night of the Wererooster: Surviving family members of recently deceased people gather in the woods of rural Western Virginia to learn what happened to their loved ones. Charlotte Reeves has assembled them, and tells them she can help them learn the truth. The truth is, there is a god-damned WereROOSTER in the woods preying on the innocent. Is there really a Wererooster terrorizing Western Virginia, or is this just a cock-and-bull story? The cocky Charlotte teams up with the cocksure Col. Sanders, cock-of-the-walk Buddy, peacocking Lou, cockeyed Stan, and Bobbi, whose mouth is always going off half-cocked. Can this plucky crew overcome the odds of this cockamamie quest, or will they be coldcocked? WHY ISN'T THE GUY WHO PLAYED COLONEL SANDERS LISTED IN THE CREDITS?? Night of the Wererooster final grade: Steve says this one way "way better" than he thought it was going to be. Entertainment value elevates this "shitty movie" into the "not-so-shitty category." Lack of a "creature," and filler scenes aimed at a 90-minute goal detracted from the parts of the movie that were surprisingly good and well done. 3.00/5.0 Brandon Producer/Director/Actor David Radford seems to have sat down to try to make a shitty movie, and succeeded in doing so. This one blows the other "micro budget" movies we've watched out of the water. Penis-related humor hit in the right places. 3.52/5 Cocktail of the Week: Rooster Whiskey Cocktail 1 1/2 oz Bourbon 1/2 oz cinnamon Schnapps or, in our case, Fireball 4 oz Sarsaparilla or Root Beer. Rim a rocks glass with kosher salt. Mix the cocktail in the glass. First the liquors, then top with the root beer or Sarsaparilla. Stir to combine. Garnish with lime wedge. Cocktail Grade: Steve thought this cocktail was inspired by the lead character in True Grit, Rooster Cogburn. Turns out, it must have actually been inspired by the flavors of a rooster's cloaca. Root beer, cinnamon, and salt don't mix. We feel bad we wasted decent bourbon on this. Only drink this if you hate yourself. 0.2/5 ------------------ Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to: boozeandbmovies@gmail.com X: @boozeandbmovies Instagram: @boozeandbmovies Threads: @boozeandbmovies www.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/boozeandbmovies/support

Andrew Sharp began his professional career playing The Artful Dodger in J.C.Williamson's 1966 revival of Oliver! He went on to work steadily in theatre and on television in the 1970s, in shows such as Peter Kenna's A Hard God and Peter Handke's Kaspar at the Nimrod Street Theatre, The Season at Sarsaparilla and Julius Caesar for The Old Tote Theatre Company, The Rocky Horror Show at The New Art Cinema in Glebe, as well as playing a regular role in The Young Doctors and guest roles in other Grundy's productions. At the age of 25 he moved to London where he played leading roles in three long-running West End productions: Beyond the Rainbow, Stage Struck and Deathtrap. Returning to Australia in the 1980s he worked mostly in film and television, notably in movies such as Buddies and Undercover, mini-series such as Glass Babies and Sword of Honour and the 13 episode Taurus Rising - amongst other work. Throughout his career he dabbled in directing, producing shows with friends in unusual locations such as garages, living rooms and church halls. He graduated from the post-graduate diploma course in film directing at Melbourne's Swinburne Institute of Technology in 1986. In the 1990s he went on to work as an assistant director on several operas at The Australian Opera (as the company was then known), before returning to the UK in the 1990s, where he directed opera students at the Royal College of Music and the Birmingham Conservatoire and - for the Covent Garden Opera Festival - directed Handel's Saul and his own translation of Mozart's The Impresario. In 2002, searching for “home”, he moved to the small northwestern NSW town of Barraba, where he created The Playhouse Hotel, a 9 bedroom boutique hotel housing an 80 seat theatre. There he has presented dozens of touring theatre performances, bands, musicians and comedians… though he admits he misses his real hometown of Sydney, and plans to return soon. Peter Whitford had celebrated 17 prolific years in show business as one of Australia's leading actors before he was ever required to sing publicly in the commercial theatre. This was as the wily Governor in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Eight years later he trod the musical boards again in another Mike Walsh produced delight; Anything Goes as Moonface Martin; public enemy number 13, opposite Geraldine Turner. Another musical was to follow with Me and My Girl as Sir John, opposite Sheila Bradley.Born in Adelaide, his early stage ventures came though university theatre. Graduating from NIDA in 1963, Peter did an ABC radio play, King of Hearts, and never looked back. His professional stage experience was in the Old Tote's inaugural production of The Cherry Orchard. His theatre performances include Ghosts at Belvoir Street; See How They Run, Why Me? And A Small Family Business for the Northside Theatre Company; and The Country Wife for the Sydney Theatre Company.Other credits on his vast list include Hedda Gabler for the Royal Queensland Theatre Company, Butley and The Season at Sarsaparilla for the Old Tote, Cyrano de Bergerac and A Map of the World for the Sydney Theatre Company, When the Wind Blows for Belvoir Street, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Catch Me If You Can for Northside, and Kennedy's Children for the Melbourne Theatre Company. For television, Peter's performances include roles in I've Married a Bachelor, Water Under the Bridge, Division 4, Number 96, Carson's Law, A Country Practice, Bodyline, The Last Bastion, The Henderson Kids, Land of Hope, Rafferty's Rules, All Saints and the spin-off series for Kingswood Country known as Bullpitt! Some audience members may even remember him as Jack in ABC radio's Blue Hills. Peter's last acting credit was an episode of Rake in 2010.Peter has appeared in many films including My Brilliant Career, Phar Lap, Careful He Might Hear You, Dead End Drive-in, Running from the Guns and Warm Nights on a Slow Moving Train. Perhaps his most indelible screen performance was as the flamboyant Les Kendall in Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom. Our stage and screen elders possess such a wealth of knowledge and experience. It's so vital that we hear these stories. It was an enormous treat to access those stories via Peter Whitford. Leith Taylor is an experienced theatre practitioner having worked across a range of fields as an actor, director, producer, writer and drama educator. As an actor Leith worked extensively over two decades in film, television and radio as well as appearing in more than sixty theatre productions nationally and internationally. In Perth she is well remembered for her numerous appearances in leading roles at the Playhouse and Hole in the Wall theatres. After being awarded a Fellowship, she transitioned to directing and founded her own company, Theatre West, with a focus on shows by or about women. She subsequently directed numerous productions, some under the banner of her own company but also in collaboration with or for other theatre companies including Black Swan, W.A. and Perth Theatre Companies, deckchair and Melbourne's HIT Productions. Some of her productions toured nationally or were part of Arts Festival programming and include Oleanna, One Small Step, Woman in Mind, Speaking in Tongues, The Season at Sarsaparilla, Sixteen Words for Water and Blood Moon. Leith has long been involved with professional drama training having lectured and directed at numerous performing arts institutions in Australia and overseas including the Drama Studio (U.S. and U.K.), LaSalle College of the Arts (Singapore) and a long association with the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Early training in journalism enhanced her work as a dramaturg and scriptwriter, while her psychology qualifications resulted in work as a drama therapist with groups and individuals in this specialist field. She was able to bring these different perspectives to her doctoral research which focused on the role of emotions in actor training programmes, signalling the necessity for significant procedural changes in drama schools and in the profession. Leith is a graduate of the University of Western Australia, California State University L.A., the Drama Studio London and WAAPA @ ECU where she completed her PhD. She has won several awards for acting and directing and been a member of numerous boards and consultative panels including the Australia Council for the Arts, Perth International Arts Festival, Healthway Foundation and the W.A. Old habits die hard, right? I can't seem to drop an episode on time these days! What is this, the third show that I've hosted in a row to drop a day or more late? Ridiculous. BUT I have an excuse. Okay, I've had an excuse every time but THIS time it's real-er. Firstly, as our announcer Bill Heywatt will tell you, I AM Marc Hershon, the OG host for Succotash, The Comedy Soundcast Soundcast, and you've gotten hold of Episode 311. My excuse? I've been moving. Not just down the street, or down the block, or across town. My lovely wife, Debra, and I have uprooted from Sausalito, California – right across the bay from San Francisco, if you're unfamiliar – and headed for the hills. The Sierra foothills, that is, in Grass Valley, CA. That's a good 3-hour drive from the Bay Area, or SIX hours if you're making the trip in an electric car with a 100-mile range. Anyway, just moved in last Friday so “Studio N”, my Nerd Nook, had to be disassembled, boxed up, and re-assembled in our new place. It's been a journey, friend. Average daily temperature is in the upper 90s to low 100s. And just a couple days ago, a wildfire broke out about 14 miles away with smoke I could clearly see through the Studio N window billowing up. So enough of my excuses. You downloaded or are streaming this installment of Succotash to hear some snippet of comedy soundcasts, didn't you? Well, friend, I'll let you know what I have in store for you right after I ask whether you heard my inestimable colleague Tyson Saner, who always drops HIS show on time, in this feed last week with Epi310, entitled “Question, Listen, Kill”. It was a good time, featuring three shows I'd heard ABOUT but had never actually heard before: What'd You Do This Weekend?, I Hear Voices, and Kill Me Now with Judy Gold. If you didn't catch it then you can still catch it now through a variety of authorized listening posts, including Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Soundcloud, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, YouTube, PodBay, Podchaser, and always – along with more than 11 years of archived episodes – on our homesite, SuccotashShow.com. That gets you up to speed and gets us to this episodes fascinating lineup of featured snippets. I've harvested “sound seedlings” from 5-4, Crazy Town, Prop Culture, and Romance Road Test. In addition, we've got a new fake sponsor this week: Sarsaparilla. Let's get started, shall we? CLIPS 5-4This episode's first entry is from 5-4. If you're looking for it, that's the numeral five, then a hyphen (or dash, if you're from the Old Country), followed by the numeral four. It's a soundcast, as they say right upfront, about how much the Supreme Court sucks. A sentiment I happen to agree with more and more with each judgement they render. Or mangle, as the case usually is. The hosts, Peter, Michael, and Rhiannon look at the reasoning behind SCOTUS' issues, using their dark humor to reveal the high court's biases, as the About section of their homesite tells us. Spoiler Alert: The clip I've selected doesn't really have a whiff of their trademarked humor in it as if comes from their recent Emergency Episode: Roe Is Overturned. I didn't want to play anything funny because I don't think the matter is funny and neither do they. Romance Road Test It's always fun and interesting when one soundcast begats another. And now the long-running By The Book soundcast, hosted by Kristen Meinzer and Jolenta Greenberg, have had a baby soundcast, entitled Romance Road Test! Kristen and Jolenta are also co-authors of the book How to Be Fine: What We Learned from Living by the Rules of 50 Self-Help Books. After years of experimenting on themselves with every self-help technique under the sun, they're leveling up and putting their own long-term romantic relationships on the line. Over 16 episodes, Kristen and Jolenta and their partners will test out popular recommendations for reigniting romantic connections. Everything from grooming each other—to sex every day for a week. Audiences will listen in and learn about what actually brings them closer…and what makes them want to run screaming away from each other. In this clip from their debut episode, they set up the idea of re-creating your very first date with your partner…if you can remember back that far. (You can get the first episode of Romance Road Test in their By The Book soundcast feed BUT the remainder of the episodes are exclusively available on Audible.com or through the Audible app.) Crazy TownFor our next clip this episode, it's off to Crazy Town, a soundcast hosted by Asher Miller, Rob Dietz, and Jason Bradford. This motley trio from the Post Carbon Institute uses their show to try to keep it together while diving in to maddening issues like climate change, runaway capitalism, and widespread social delusionism. I clipped their episode from early June entitled, “Throwing Superman Through a Cigarette Truck: The Insidious Manipulation of Advertising”. Our snippet has the hosts getting into the annoying practice in movies known as “product placement.” Prop CultureI am still trying to wrap my head around the concept for our lat featured show, entitled Prop Culture, which is another brand new soundcast. First of all, it's not to be confused with a Disney+ show of the same name, hosted by Dan Lanigan, who is a movie prop collector. The Prop Culture we're clipping is hosted by 3 NFTs characters Loot Bag #2020, Quirkies #307, and Quirkies #1988. It seems to only be available on iHeart Radio, or was – the more I look for it, the more it seems to be leaking out into other distribution channels. I'm not sure who's doing the three voices. I do find it interesting that the show description on iHeart Radio ends with: “Prop Culture. We bet you'll hate it.” See what you think with this snippet from their first episode, “The Pickleball Murders”. That's what we got for you and apologies to anyone who used out @SuccotashShow handle in their socials this past week to get into the TweetSack. This episode is so late I'm dispensing with the Sack for this week. But I'll save up those handles until I'm back for Epi313. Tyson will be back for Epi312 next week in this very same feed, so tune in for his soundcast shenanigans and check out his gaming videos at Tyson Saner: Gamer on YouTube, too! Until next time, if you should happen to find yourself careening wildly down a steep hill on a bike with no brakes, and a pedestrian you narrowly missed as you zipped through an intersection screams out, “Have you heard anything good lately?!”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

In this episode, I discuss the Ginseng, Aralia and Smilax families of herbs. This includes Sarsaparilla, long valued medicinally, for endurance and sexual health. These are all adaptogens, powerful herbs that may be more precious than gold or as common as weedy briars. Understanding and identifying these herbs means finding tremendous value among your weeds. It's a REAL Old School with the TYT OGs Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, and Dave Koller. What's with the second X in VAXX? What cruel fate do people who use leafblowers deserve? Are you a cheese-a-holic? Did you get COVID swabbed? Maybe you're the type to memorise your credit card number. Bob's ready to guess if YOU like Sarsaparilla!
When Waylon sang "Mama don't let your babies grow up to be Cowboys", was it because the food was bad? It's true that food on the range could be difficult, but they did find a way to get their protein intake. Harty, rib sticking food is the cowboy way. Jerky was accessible and was complimented by beans, hard biscuits, fruits and stews. The contents of a stew called 'Son of a Bitch', needs to be heard to be believed. Not quite to my liking. Besides food, Cowboys had their liquid favourites. Sarsaparilla was reported to have special medicinal benefits. And then there is Cowboy Coffee. Barbara takes you through the process. If you get acid reflux when you have coffee, this might be the way forward for you.A couple of good history yarns along the way.

VH & C Mushrooms Provide a smooth, vitalizing influence, delivering 5-6 hours of calm, sustained energy with each dose. 2-3 caps in the morning and again in the early afternoon provides energetic support for the whole day, leaving you with energy left over at the end of the day. Contains several adaptogenic herbs which provide immune and hormone balancing influences along with a general strengthening of the whole the body. Our job is not to target diseases or micromanage specific chemical reactions or hormone levels. Our job is simply to nourish the body with a complete spectrum of the kinds of foods that it will recognize as "real food". Real food is that which is compatible with the organic nature of the body's original construction. The human body is a natural organism. It was created from the "dust (or clay) of the earth". Therefore, the perfect food for the body will also be of earthen origin ─ unaltered. Earthen resources that qualify as real food include such things as clay, water, algae, seaweeds, herbs, fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables. Anything less than whole would not be a "real food". This includes "natural" vitamin and mineral supplements assembled by a laboratory rather than by Nature. Our job is not to try to improve on Nature with our so-called "science", our job is merely to provide the body with an abundance of real food and let the body decide what to do with it. Earthen resources contain a vast array of nutrient-based building blocks for the body to select from in order to construct its own medicines.Again, this entire process is performed, not by our manipulation of chemical reactions, but through our support of the body's own inherent wisdom. Ingredients: 7 Mushroom Blend (Chaga, Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Maitake, Reishi, Agarikon, Turkey Tail), Bringraj, Ginger, Ashwagandha, Brahmi, Codonopsis, Coriander, Damiana, Devil's Club, Hawthorn Berry, Ho Shou Wu, Jatoba, Licorice Root, Nettle Root, Rhodiola Rosea, Sarsaparilla, Schizandra Berry, Shatavari, Wild Yam Root, Wood Betony, Ancient Plant Minerals, Borage, Eleuthero Root, Jiaogulan, Nettle Leaf, Suma Root, Laminaria Juice, Humic & Fulvic Earth, Ormalite All of our product ingredients are whole earthen in nature, and are sourced in this order of priority: wildcrafted, organic, or grown without chemicals. We do not add fillers, excipients, or flow agents. Our capsules are vegetarian sourced from pine bark. Recommended Low-Level Use: 1 teaspoon (4 capsules) 2 times per day in food, water, smoothie or SumaRaj tea. Recommended High-Level Use: 1-2 teaspoons (4-8 capsules) 2-3 times per day. Additional Info & FAQs: Other herbs in Adaptogen & Mushroom Blend help to improve endurance, better performance, an increase in repetitions, superior oxygen utilization, faster workout recovery, and accelerated tissue rebuilding following stressful workouts. Improves mental concentration, meditation, chi gong or martial art practices, sustained mental focus during a busy workday in the office and extended endurance for those with physically demanding jobs. Allows you to work a long day and still have energy left over at the end of the day, improving the quality of time spent with friends and loved ones after work. Long term usage gradually builds health and stamina due to the formula's nourishing influences upon the kidney jing (an energy more subtle and more foundational to overall health than the chi). Nourishes the body's immune system and cardiovascular system as well, strengthening the overall physical constitution, improving resistance to health compromises, while helping to restore greater youth and vitality. The Motivation Movement | Inspirational Quotes, Daily Advice, Lifestyle Design, Personal Development
Today’s episode is a true story about my business, Wild Bill’s Craft Beverage Co. My current role at the company is Chief Marketing Officer. Wild Bill’s has been in business since 2002. For the longest time, Wild Bill’s was regionally focused in the Northeast, servicing traditional, outdoor fairs and festivals with our western themed soda saloon activation. The concept is super simple: buy a stainless-steel mug, drink unlimited olde fashioned soda pop ALL DAY. We produce WILDY unique flavors like Sarsaparilla, Birch Beer, Root Beer, Vanilla Cream, Orange, Grape, Butterscotch and beyond. My business partner, who’s a Navy Veteran, and I became involved in 2017. It was our mission to use Wild Bill’s as a platform to provide meaningful employment opportunity to America’s Heroes, our Veteran’s, who all too often face serious unemployment and under-employment issues. At the height of our operation, in 2019, we had 50 full time and part time employees, with about half of them being Veterans. FAST FORWARD TO 2020, we were on a run-rate to service 400 events and $10 MM in revenue. Then, COVID happened. Quote: “But in practice master plans fail – because they create totalitarian order, not organic order. They are too rigid; they cannot easily adapt to the natural and unpredictable changes that inevitably arise in the life of a community.” – Christopher Alexander The natural and unpredictable changes that inevitably arise; talk about perfectly summing up the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020. We always had contingency plans in place, but no one in their right mind could have expected a situation like we’re currently experiencing. Small, medium, and especially LARGE gatherings were cancelled nationwide. Our core business at Wild Bill’s came to an abrupt, grinding halt. We were ABSOLUTELY DEVISTATED. We had to figure something out, and figure it out FAST. Pivoting from being an event-based business, to an e-commerce business has NOT been easy. Our expertise was in experiential, not digital. The options we had were clear, GO DARK and hope for the best, or take action, and adapt to the current predicament. We opted for the latter. Kate Fitzpatrick is one of our great actors. She was born in Perth but grew up in Adelaide. It was in this city that she developed her passion for art and cricket and classical music. Her potential as a visual artist was recognised by Jeffrey Smart, who awarded her a travelling art scholarship to Japan. Her love of cricket lead her to an appointment as the world’s first female Cricket commentator. And classical music has sustained her through a vast array of experiences in a career that has rewarded and challenged. At the age of 18 she was accepted into NIDA to study Acting. This instigated her move to Sydney and a career as one of our favourite actors. Her triumphant theatre roles include The Lady of Camellias, Hamlet on Ice, Rooted, Insignificance and Kennedy’s Children. She was there at the beginning of a burgeoning Australian theatre working in seminal works at The Jane Street Theatre, The Old Tote Theatre and Nimrod. She created the role of Magenta in the original Australian production of The Rocky Horror Show and began her career alongside iconic Australian directors like John Bell, Rex Cramphorne and Jim Sharman. The great Patrick White spotted her in The Legend of King O’Malley and became an immediate fan which then began a friendship that lasted until his death. Kate played Nola Boyle in White’s play The Season at Sarsaparilla. Subsequently he penned his next play Big Toys as a gift for her.She has been a regular face on our film and television screens. And an unmistakeable voice on radio. Kate has made an impression across all mediums.Kate joined me for long lunch and a candid conversation, detailing an extraordinary life in the theatre and some extraordinary experiences with some extraordinary people. She is a great raconteur and an immense wit, all delivered with wonderful detail and a voice as smooth as warm honey.Stages is available from iTunes, Spotify and Whooshkaa.

This episode, we’re sharing a double feature of two episodes that came out WAY BACK in January of 2018 - that’s closing in on two years ago. Part One of this feature is dedicated to our Iki Japanese bitters, and it includes a really cool phone interview with Jennifer Bloeser of Oregon Coast Wasabi. She is literally the farmer who tends these crazy plants, plucks em out of the dirt, and ships them on ice to our team so that we can create these super unique bitters. We also do a little romp through the culinary history and culture of Japan so that you can understand how this island nation and its cuisine has inspired us. Part Two is focused on the cocktails (and other alcoholic libations) of the American Frontier. Of course, our Frontier Sarsaparilla Bitters are another really popular member of the Heritage Collection, so in addition to talking about ingredients that are native to North America, we also do a really cool march through the drinking history of our nation from its inception to roughly the year 1900. This sounds like a long time, but when you zoom out and consider the vast sweep of drinking history, it’s a really condensed period when a lot of really important changes happened. And they happened here in America, which makes the cocktail a uniquely American invention.

On our 73rd episode we tackle the 1959 horror classic House on Haunted Hill starring Vincent Price, a film that holds up surprisingly well despite some hokier scares. We talk about the ghosts and murderous twists, the excellent linguistics of Price, the treatment of women and their "hysterics," and the drunken antics of Pritchard. We also cover Jeremiah Weed's Sarsaparilla Whiskey! The Gang visits Shout! Factory World Headquarters in Los Angeles, sitting down with President and Co-founder Garson Foos. In case you’ve been living under a rock, Shout! is the home video and music company helping Joel Hodgson bring back “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return.” Meanwhile, Kate yearns for a Jo Co Cruise with Jonathan Coulton, and celebrates Bill Nye’s new science show. Ryan and Greg dissect “The Running Man,” a perfectly decent Stephen King novella butchered into one of the lesser action flicks of Arnold Schwarzenegger. And everyone tries to figure out who decided to let Guy Ritchie direct “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.” Then it’s time to talk shop and drink Earp’s Sarsaparilla with Garson. Kate and Greg take A Very Adamant Stance against Ryan’s sanity, and indulge in one penguin callback too many. In Reviewers in the MST, James and Ron don some plaid and knock over some cardboard boxes while contemplating “Future War.” All this plus Tony the Tiger quietly yearning to mix it up a little with some healthy flax seed granola and goji berries, on this week's episode of the Revival League Podcast! (This podcast does not represent Alternaversal, Shout Factory or the Kickstarter campaign in any official capacity). EDITOR’S NOTE: In June 2019, this podcast merged with the Damn Dirty Geeks Podcast and became The Damn Dirty Drive-in. These are our classic back catalog episodes, dating back to March 2016. Please enjoy! The new Drive-In podcast opens for business with original sketches, movie discussions, interviews, weird food tastings and more at Episode 168.
Hello folks, come on into The Crochet Circle Podcast. Here are the show notes from Episode Fourteen - Unchained Melody? In this episode, I cover: Yay Crochet or Nay Crochet; FOs; WIPs; Feeding the Habit; Tunisian CAL; Festivals; Big Up and What's Good? This podcast is sponsored by my online crafting company, Provenance Craft Co. Thanks to everyone who tunes into the podcast whether it is through Stitcher, Podbean, Spotify, iTunes or the YouTube Channel. Your support and engagement are really appreciated and makes running a podcast very special and worthwhile. If you would like to support the podcast, you can do that through Patreon: 1 - Yay crochet, yay crochet, yay crochet and a wee bit more yay crochet! I love to learn, and so when I come across a new technique I like to dive in and understand its pros and cons rather than just accept that is naturally better. I was coming across comments on Instagram about how many people preferred to start their projects with a chainless foundation, rather than the traditional chained foundation because it was quicker and they preferred the finished effect. Hmm, time to get my hook out and investigate. The below photo shows you the times, sizes, pros and cons that I found between chained and chainless foundations. Bella Coco has a great YouTube tutorial on how to do a chainless foundation. 2 - Finished Objects I always get through more projects that I think. Through the guise of #StashBingo I have been using some really lovely yarns that otherwise would have remained at the back of the Stash Palace. I have really loved working with the Jamieson & Smiths Shetland wool and it comes in a fantastic range of colours. 1 - J&S 2 ply Jumper Weight (100% Shetland wool): Blue is shade FC41, dark green is shade 65, light green is FC62 and the fawn is actually J&S 3 ply jumper weight in undyed shade 2008/Katmollet. I was testing out whether the 3ply was better for the beginning of the cowl because the colourwork strands mean that the patterned areas are heavier and contain more yarn. My conclusion is that it is best to double up on the 2ply where needed rather than use the 3 ply. 2 - J&S 2 ply Jumper Weight (100% Shetland wool) Cream is shade 1A, orange is shade 125 and the dark red is shade FC62. I have been working on these projects as part of #StashBingo but also to design projects that can use up yarn straggles and look good. I also did a bit of investigating on the best place to buy Jamieson & Smith wool from and the cheapest source was Purlesence. They offer free UK and EU postage for orders over £25 and I believe that their non-EU shipping is also very reasonable. 25g of J&S 2 ply is only £2.90. 3 - This was a Corriedale pencil roving that I bought from Queen of Purls in Glasgow, but it doesn't seem to be listed on their website anymore. I used it to crochet a hat for my niece Darcie, which you can see below. If you like the look of this yarn then you may want to try Erika Knight for John Lewis XXL which is a slightly chunkier version or Drops Eskimo. The pattern is Super Chunky Bobble Hat by Jo Janes on Ravelry. 4 - Wolle Rodel Sport and Strumpfwolle in shade 16915 75% wool and 25% polyamide. 5 - Regia 4 ply 75% wool and 25% polyamide in Ocean (06629). I think this is what the yarn is... The pink yarn is West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4 ply, 75% wool (35% is Bluefaced Leicester) and 25% nylon in shade 545 Sarsaparilla. To share the love with listeners and watchers of the podcast, I want to test giving out a 50% discount code for my patterns. I am starting this off with my latest pattern Doppio Colosseum and so between 3rd and the 17th March (midnight GMT) you can get 50% off the pattern in Ravelry by using code DOPPIO50%. This is what Doppio Colosseum looks like and it requires 200g/800m of a 4ply fingering weight yarn. 3 - Work in Progress I have two main WIPs on the go at the moment, one crochet and one knitted. From now on in the podcast, I am only going to talk about my knitting projects when they have become finished objects. I want to make sure that the podcast remains predominantly about crochet but I still need to be able to reflect on the other things that I craft because they also give me inspiration for my crochet makes. Here is my second #StashBingo project (project bag number 4). This is some really course British wool that I picked up at Wonderwool Wales almost two years ago with the thought of making housewares with it. I then dyed up some of the wool when I ran the dyeing workshop last September. There was no real thought to how I dyed it, I was just helping to exhaust some of the wool in Gill's dye pot. The result is lovely with a shift in the depth of colour as you get to the outer parts of the skein because the dye couldn't penetrate the inner part of the yarn cake as readily. I am holding two strands of wool together to make this rug, starting with two strands of undyed. When the first cake of undyed had been crocheted, I added the lightest of my dyed wool in and continued to crochet with two strands - one undyed and one dyed. This is adding a really nice sense of balance to the rug because the undyed yarn is visible throughout the whole piece. I have then moved onto the next darkest skein of dyed yarn, and so on and so on. I love it! This will be an FO on the next podcast. Here is my knitting WIP. It is Stream by Isabel Kramer and I am using one of my sock club skeins from Life in the Long Grass and Socks Yeah! in Sphene (104) the mustard colour and Sugilite (112) the plum colour. 4 - Feeding the habit I am still being good. I have bought Top-Down Crochet Sweaters by Dora Ohrenstein and my subscription of Pom Pom Quarterly has turned up and here is a link to the Hanbira cardigan. I continue to focus on the MANY gorgeous yarns in my stash. 5 - Tunisian CAL is GO GO GO! This new CAL started on the 3rd March and runs until the 16th April. We are being expertly guided by Sol through this CAL as she already teaches Tunisian crochet, has tutorials on her blog and is providing patterns for the CAL. Tamara (long-term listener and group member) has also pulled together her top Ten Tunisian Crochet Tips as a blog post, so give that a read too. There are three categories: 1 - Sol's Cobbled Streets Cowl which is free of charge pattern and needs one skein (400m) of 4 ply yarn, a 4mm (G6) hook and a 30cm cable, though you may be able to use a long-shafted hook instead. 2 - Sol's Ocaso shawl which is a paid-for pattern and needs three (1 x Yarn A and 2 x Yarn B) skeins of 4 ply yarn with about 380m per skein. You will need a 4mm hook (G6) and an 80cm cable. Use code TCCPODCAST to get 50% off this pattern in Ravelry. 3 - Anything goes. The pattern of your choice, it just has to be Tunisian crochet. A Ravelry thread has already been opened and you can use #tccTunisianCAL on Instagram. If you are looking at joining in under category three, then you may be interested in a couple of new patterns: 1 - Zoe Halstead has a Tunisian shawl in Inside Crochet issue 87. 2 - The Crochet Project has a new Shawl book coming out and there is a Tunisian Crochet shawl in that. Here are the yarns that I am thinking about using: The one on the left is Denim 4ply (50% Merino/50% silk) 100g/400m by The Wool Kitchen and this is definitely going to become a Cobbled Streets cowl. The second two yarns are another sock club skein from Life in the Long Grass 100g/400m and some Araucania Yarns Ranco 100g/344m (PT 2109) but the jury is out on these colours as I may change my mind. Again. 6 - Festivals I didn't make it to Unravel but Helen did and has added a review to the thread in our group in Ravelry and also to get a new blog - thank Helen! I am heading up to Edinburgh Yarn Festival on the 11th March and will be pulling together a vlog on my antics. I will also be vending at Wonderwool Wales on the 22nd and 23rd of April and you can find me at stall H2. Come and say hello! 7 - Big Up Here are some blogs and podcasts that you may want to check out: Helen's making blog Making at Number 14 Chrissie Crafts on YouTube talking about her crochet and embroidery projects. Crochetcakes on YouTube talking about her life in Puerto Rico, crochet and knitting. 8 - What's good? I am back in the room and that is what's good! Until next month.
