Producer and filmmaker Chadd Harbold returns to the show to discuss Terrence Malick's awe-inspiring WWII epic The Thin Red Line. The film marked Malick's return to the director's chair after a 20 year absence from filmmaking and features an ensemble cast of dozens of recognizable faces, including many massive stars of the period reduced to mere minutes of screen time and a handful of lines of dialogue. Based on the James Jones novel of the same name, the movie is unlike any war film ever made and showcases Malick venturing deeper into his style of meandering camerawork, striking images of the natural world, and contemplative monologues delivered in voiceover (occasionally by actors we seldom see onscreen). We discuss the storied, decade-long journey of getting The Thin Red Line to screen, a process that involved Malick spending heaps of cash satisfying every one of his fleeting whims and every actor in Hollywood vying for a spot on the film's massive roster characters. Then, we discuss the film's juxtaposition of horrific war imagery with breathtaking shots of wildlife and nature - a visual contrast that enhances Malick's existential preoccupations with the nature of good and evil, darkness and light in the world. Finally, we praise Malick's working method, and how his decision to "shoot everything" allows his films to be born in the edit, often taking on thematic and visual nuances that were far from intentional on set, on the day. A estas alturas de la pandemia hay una historia que todavía no te hemos contado.  Aunque seguro que las has visto o las has recordado estos días.  Las películas de las grandes catástrofes naturales, o invasiones, o enemigos invencibles… Todas tienen un mensaje común o una moraleja de esperanza.  Algo así como que unidos es más fácil. Todos juntos contra el enemigo común.  Siempre aparece un héroe o un conjunto de héroes. Y siempre, en todas las malditas películas de catástrofes, hay una sucesión de escenas en las que se ve a gente de todo el planeta, de diferentes sitios y razas, acurrucados alrededor de una radio o un televisor, queriendo escuchar una buena noticia. Por ejemplo en Armageddon, película de 1998, lo vemos cuando habla el presidente de los Estados Unidos antes del lanzamiento de las naves hacia el meteorito que va a impactar con la tierra… La realidad nos dice ahora que los discursos no son tan bonitos ni nadie les pone música de fondo.  Tampoco salen escenas de los vecinos bailando en las terrazas. La realidad incluso en estos momentos es algo más mundana. Pero ahí siempre han estado los medios de comunicación.  No para hacer debates estériles como todos los días si no para en los grandes acontecimientos ser la referencia, llevar el liderazgo informativo y poner voz a las malas noticias. Esto lo aprendí viendo en la tele una serie de ciencia ficción.  Una en la que unos extraterrestres llegaban a la tierra en son de paz pero luego resultaba que eran lagartos y se comían nuestras ratas.  Te hablo de la serie de los años 80 “V”. A mí me pilló muy pequeño y quizá por eso me impactó mucho.  Pero lo que más me gustaba, más allá de los efectos especiales y el miedo que me producía, es que en la última temporada todos los episodios de V empezaban igual.  Un informativo de televisión en el que una cadena de televisión llamada Freedom Network, cadena de la libertad, daba el parte de la guerra de los humanos contra los visitantes.  Yo lo veía, y a pesar de que sabía que todo aquello era una ficción, no sé por qué pero me sentía unido al resto de la humanidad. El presentador, que se llamaba Howard K. Smith era una especie de Iñaki Gabilondo, veterano y con credibilidad, hablaba desde Nueva York y también destacaba ejemplos de héroes anónimos. Y siempre acababa con la misma frase.  Una frase que nunca olvidaré: “Nuestras esperanzas están con ustedes”. En la realidad no suena la música de Hanz Zimmer cuando hablan los presidentes. Ni tampoco aparece en el último momento Bruce Willis ni Will Smith.  La realidad nunca ha tenido presupuesto para la épica. Pero de todas esas películas y series sí hay algo que encontramos la realidad.  La radio, la televisión, los periodistas que insisten cada día, desde todas las cadenas, que la vida puede ser maravillosa. The Road to El Dorado (2000) was not a box office success proving that road wasn't paved with gold. Dreamworks first animated feature may have been a flop, but the film is still fondly remembered by those who saw it. It is full of colorful characters, expressive animals, and even has an evil wizard. The script was from the writers of The Pirates of the Caribbean with a star studded voice cast that includes Kevin Kline, Kenneth Branagh, Rosie Perez, Armand Assante, Edward James Olmos, Jim Cummings, Frank Welker and Tobin Bell. With music by Hanz Zimmer and Elton John this film had all the hallmarks of a major live action blockbuster. Invasion of the Remake tries something a little different this week by reimagining The Road to El Dorado from animation to live action much like Disney recently did with Beauty & the Beast. John Ridley describes Idris Elba as a Renaissance man; were he not so humble, he might just as easily apply the expression to himself. An Oscar-winning screenwriter for the magnificent 12 Years A Slave, he's also a dab hand at directing, producing, novel-writing and (believe it or not) stand-up comedy. He's ferociously thoughtful, considered and intelligent too, so our latest offering is as much about sociology and politics as sound. John's latest project is Guerrilla, made by the ever-reliable Showtime and available in full via Sky Atlantic. Staring Idris, Frieda Pinto and Babou Ceesay, it focusses on the little-known story of the British Black Panther movement in 1970s London. In addition to some rare contemporary grooves from that, you'll hear extracts from Hanz Zimmer's score for 12 Years A Slave, Waddy Watchel's bespoke arrangements for the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side, and a spot of Carter Burwell's work on 3 Kings (which John scripted). But in putting this episode together, we owe a special debt of gratitude to his music supervisor on Guerrilla, Sarah Bridge. Not only did Sarah provide us with hard-to-find source tracks by Britain's first ever all-black rock group Noir, she also delivered examples from Max Richter's score - including Love Song, the piece that plays under Edith's introduction. Perhaps most excitingly, though, she's given us an exclusive recording of Femi Kuti's track Look Around, which he actually performed live for a club scene that features in the narrative ...
