Richard Wagner refused to call Parsifal an opera, but instead considered it a rite of “consecration.” For many years, its performance was restricted to the small German town of Bayreuth: the destination of a new kind of artistic/religious pilgrimage.   The story itself is somewhat perplexing; both mythic and strangely fragmentary.  It is a tale of knights, witches, sorcerers, and one pure innocent fool… all of them engaged in a mystical struggle between good and evil. It is this cosmic aspiration that has made Wagner's final operatic composition an enduringly controversial work of art.  People adore Parsifal, revile it, groan at the thought of its great length, and celebrate its beauty and power… and often, do so all at once. Parsifal failed in his first attempt at the Grail Castle but years of wandering and succeeding at the more mundane tasks of life have left him hungering for a return. This week's pick is the 1983 post-apocalyptic film 2019: After the Fall of New York. A nuclear holocaust has wiped out most of humanity and left survivors sterile. Parsifal is forced by the Pan-American Confederacy to locate the last remaining fertile woman in Manhattan but has to get through the evil Euracs, rat eaters, mutants, and monkey men along the way.

I've already done a Lententide episode devoted to contraltos singing the music of Bach, but it seemed to me that in the upheaval of today's vengeful and war-hungry world, we could use another contemplative episode to provide us with meditative (and even tuneful!) music to calm our spirits. The tunefulness comes especially from recordings of favorite religious music by Gounod, Franck, and other 19th-century French composers sung by Camille Maurane, Marcel Journet, Richard Verreau, and Françoise Pollet.
