It's Die Hard on a prison plane!(you can watch this week's episode on YouTube!)This week, Phil ‘Philly Bedlam' Gawthorne and Liam ‘The Coliseum' Billingham take a high-security flight on CON AIR with special guest Scout Tafoya, aka ‘The Massachusetts Mangler'!After serving a long and harsh sentence for a self-defense killing, parolee and ex-Army Ranger Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage) travels on a prisoner transport plane nicknamed ‘Con Air', to meet with his wife and daughter. But when said plane is taken over by vicious criminal mastermind Cyrus ‘The Virus' Grissom (John Malkovich) and his bloodthirsty cohorts, Poe finds himself unable to abandon his friend Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) and vulnerable female Prison Guard Sally Bishop (Rachel Ticotin), and decides to fight back against the vicious convicts, with the help of unconventional US Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack), who assists his efforts from the ground. As CON AIR is one of the best and most iconic ‘DIE HARD ON A [BLANK]' films ever made, this is one of our biggest, and most substantive, episodes yet. The guys start out by discussing the origins of these kind of cinematic stories, going all the way back to movies such as STAGECOACH, before digging in on the film's plentiful ‘Die Hard DNA'. They go deep on the film's themes, meanings, and aspirations, and discuss how its politics and portrayals have aged, for better or worse, in the intervening decades since its summer 1997 release. They talk in detail about the three principle stars – Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich – as well as the rest of the stellar supporting cast, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Simon West, and writer Scott Rosenberg. Events culminate with a highly contested edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', and a criminally tough ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz! Trust us, this is one flight you don't want to miss! CON AIR trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Olvpk5BXWCIAt the time of release, CON AIR is streaming on Hulu, TNT, TBS and TruTV in the US and is available to rent or buy on YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Filmmaker, critic, video essayist and author Scout Tafoya joins the show to discuss the work of undersung journeyman Bruce Beresford and his brilliant 1991 film 'Black Robe', a story of faith, the frontier, and the church as a pernicious vestige of the European colonial project. Set amidst the 17th Century French conquests of North America in modern-day Quebec, the film follows the titular Black Robe, Father Laforgue, a Jesuit Missionary tasked with bringing Christianity to the indigenous populations of the region. As he ventures deep into Huron territory with his company of Algonquin guides, the limits of his faith and reason are tested, as it becomes clear that his beliefs and the promises they supposedly carry can find no purchase with a people who have no need for them. Greenlit in the wake of the success of 'Dances With Wolves' and cashing in on an exceptional amount of goodwill Beresford had accrued after directing the Academy Award-winning 'Driving Miss Daisy', the film is a brilliant study of self-deception, and the profoundly human impulses of one's perceptions of the divine. We discuss Beresford as filmmaker, his history as a contemporary of Australian greats Peter Weir and George Miller, and why his work deserves an immediate and vast reappraisal. Then, we discuss 'Black Robe', its exacting observations of faith and imperialism, and its unusually sensitive and well-researched portrayals of indigenous American tribes. Finally, we talk about other films in the canon of great portrayals of faith and the frontier, including Michael Mann's gorgeous 'The Last of the Mohicans' and Martin Scorsese's late-period masterpiece 'Silence'. The writer and filmmaker Scout Tafoya, author of the new book But God Made Him a Poet: Watching John Ford in the 21st Century, joins the show to discuss one of Ford's greatest films, the 1962 western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, starring John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin. Made in the twilight of Ford's career, the downbeat Liberty Valance is an example of what we would now call a filmmaker's Late Style: a veteran director taking stock of their own legacy in their final works. Liberty Valance is a preview of the conclusion of the classic era of the Western genre in the tumult of the sixties, the end of the Old West as represented by Wayne, the cowboy archetype finally replaced by constitutional order and modern progress as embodied by Stewart, as a young eastern lawyer who travels west to the town of Shinbone, intending to introduce education and order to a lawless place approaching statehood, and is soon targeted for death by feared local outlaw Liberty Valance (Marvin). Scout has seen every one of John Ford's surviving films; we discuss Liberty Valance in the context of Ford's career and worldview, grapple with the ongoing question in our age of assessing the art of the problematic artist, and consider what this film has to say about the consequences of violence and the media's role in reinforcing the official version of historical facts. Unwatchables welcomes Scout Tafoya— critic, video essayist, and author of But God Made Him a Poet: Watching John Ford in the 21st Century— to discuss the film branded for decades as the quintessential big-budget disaster. Michael Cimino's HEAVEN'S GATE gets blamed for a lot of things: for bankrupting its studio, for animal cruelty, and for singlehandedly ending the auteur-driver New Hollywood era. Danny and I discuss the desiccated ideal of American journalism, unguarded moments, and Pakula and Redford take film seriously as an art form. ----------------- About Danny Bowes ----------------- "New York-based Danny Bowes makes film and theatre pieces when he isn't writing criticism of many kinds. A constant (and constantly humourous) presence on Twitter, Bowes is deeply connected to the continuing saga of film and film criticism, bringing wit and enthusiasm to the stories behind classic films as well as the state of modern TV and movies. He started writing for Premiere, which led to many other gigs, many of them online, including dedicated himself to reviewing Bollywood films for Rogerebert.com, giving them the attention they aren't often afforded elsewhere. He communicates a love for his favourite auteurs that extends to their making project choices that play to their strengths. He lets his personal obsessions and loves drift into his writing because the success of the medium is personal to him. His writing on the state of criticism and his words in tribute of Roger Ebert aren't just relevant; they're deeply touching. He knows better than most that one must have a love for the medium to keep writing criticism because it isn't always a rewarding profession. He has an infectious conversational style, illuminating every aspect of a production with such glee that you can practically see his eyes lighting up as he discusses everything right with Kiss Me Deadly and Buckaroo Banzai. He's willing to go to bat not merely for films or artists he admires, but for the idea of a rational, civil critical conversation, an endangered species in 2014, making him a most vital voice." - Scout Tafoya, The Encyclopedia of Film Criticism ( http://www.punkeinfilm.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-encyclopedia-of-film-criticism.html ) , 2014 *Twitter:* @bybowes ( https://twitter.com/bybowes ) *Outlets:* Rogerebert.com, Premiere Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

What happens when Nic Cage does a favor for his first-time filmmaker brother Chris Coppola, but derails it with a performance so bizarre it makes Vampire’s Kiss look like Leaving Las Vegas? Well, this week on the podcast, Nathan and Clint find out with the help of guest and friend of the show Scout Tafoya (RogerEbert.com), as we talk about Deadfall and Look Who’s Talking Now! Two films at widely disparate ends of the Travolta/Cage spectrum, Deadfall and Look Who’s Talking Now feel like adventures at different points in the same gonzo dimension. In Deadfall, we follow a con man (a bland Michael Biehn) roped into grifts within grifts thanks to his unscrupulous uncle (James Coburn) and Cage’s Eddie King, a figure of cosmic weirdness and inconcievable line deliveries. And then there’s Look Who’s Talking Now, the execrable final entry in the Look Who’s Talking series, where the focus shifts off the kids (who are too old to have Bruce Willis and Roseanne in their brains) and onto a pair of dogs (Danny DeVito and Diane Keaton) living out the Lady and the Tramp dream while Travolta and Kirstie Alley’s marriage collapses in real time. It’s cuckoo bananas in an entirely disparate orbit from Deadfall, and yet we gab about it all the same. Take a listen! Since we've been stuck inside for so long, I've longed for the open plains of the Western. Luckily, Kino Lorber's got our back; this year marks the twentieth anniversary of Nancy Kelly's sumptuous film Thousand Pieces of Gold, which they're celebrating with a remarkable 4K restoration, courtesy of IndieCollect, which you can find on their virtual screening service Kino Marquee. Critically acclaimed at the time but eventually lost to the annals of history, there's no better time to revisit it. Based on the novel of the same name by Ruthanne Lum McCunn, Kelly's Western tells the story of Lalu, played by Rosalind Chao long before she'd make waves with films like The Joy Luck Club and her extended stint on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. She's a young Chinese woman in the 19th-century who finds herself sold to a Chinese man who runs a brothel in a small Idaho mining town. Far from accepting her fate as a prostitute, though, Lalu finds ways to assert agency and free will in a world that is especially hostile to women, Chinese women especially. It's wild to watch this in 2020, in a world more openly aware of the misdeeds perpetrated against women, and especially women of color, and see the ways Kelly's sensitive lens handles the deep, theatrical nuances of Lalu's story. It's an especially wonderful early star turn for Chao, demonstrating remarkable strength and vulnerability as a woman forced to make something of herself. I've been a fan of Chao for years, and when it came time to cover Kino Lorber's restoration of this film, I leapt at the chance to talk to her. Now, for those who don't know, I co-host a Twitch livestream series for Consequence of Sound called COVID-EODROME, which you can find on COS's Twitch channel. A week or two back, my colleague Scout Tafoya and I were lucky enough to talk to the cast and crew of Thousand Pieces of Gold -- in addition to Chao, we spoke to her co-star Chris Cooper, director Nancy Kelly and editor/producer partner Kenji Yamamoto.  But on top of that, I got the chance to speak to the lovely Rosalind Chao one-on-one for this show. Together we discuss her work on this film, the immense struggles she had as a young actress early in her career, and the ways her work has blossomed since then. And yes, we spare a little time to talk about Star Trek, too. Take a listen.  (More of a Comment, Really… is a proud member of the Chicago Podcast Coop.
