New Podcast about The Prisoner! - Steven and Erika of Lazy Doctor Who fame(?) launch a new effort covering the colourful, psychadelic, trippy, wtf-is-happening spy-fi series that is 1967’s The Prisoner. The world premiere of The Prisoner happened 50 years ago today — in Canada, of all places! Despite this bit of our national heritage, we’ll release our episodes 50 years after each one aired in the UK. So expect the first proper In The Village ep to cover “Arrival” on the 50th anniversary of its UK premiere: September 29. Yes, we’ll be watching in the original UK airing order. Do you have a problem with that? Well, you’re not alone. Don’t worry. We’ll cover this additional odd aspect of an already odd show. We hope you’ll join us and enjoy. If you don’t, then blame the Lazy Doctor Who listeners who asked for it. Be careful what you wish for! Be seeing you! Host Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky.

This week's "last" is a goodbye to a companion we're all quite fond of, Steven Taylor (not to be confused with Steven Tyler). Join Deb, Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we marvel at the excellence of this story, the excellence of Dodo in it, the excellence of Steven's reason for leaving the TARDIS, and the total lack of excellence in the general amount of fandom discussion surrounding this story. Why have we heard so little about this one? Have you watched/read/listened to "The Savages"? Did you love it? This week's podcast features the audio from our meetup on how to start a podcast, which we recorded way back in September. This was a departure from our usual format. We had veteran podcasters on one side of the room and aspiring podcasters on the other, and we invited the rookies to pepper the vets with questions. You'll hear questions such as these: Which sound editing program should I use? What would you do differently if you started again, especially for business? How frequently should podcasts come out? What social media channels should you use? What analytics should you track? How do you make crowdfunding work? How do you record guests remotely on your podcast when they may not be technically savvy? Where's the best place for your podcast live, for hosting and distribution? And you'll hear answers from these podcasters: Ben Yendall of Tales from the Hydian Way; Erika Ensign of Verity!, The Audio Guide to Babylon 5, Lazy Doctor Who and Uncanny Magazine; Chris Sikkenga of Montreal Sauce; Dan and Trina Shessel of Northern Nerdcast; Danica LeBlanc of Yegs and Bacon; Troy Pavlek of Basket of Yegs; Steven Schapansky of Radio Free Skaro, Hockey Feels, Lazy Doctor Who, The Memory Cheats and Uncanny Magazine. Have a listen. This episode is also available in iTunes, on Google Play, on SoundCloud or on Stitcher. Many thanks to CafeRista for hosting us. Thanks, too, to CKUA Radio and the University of Alberta Music program for donating door prizes to give away. Audio from the October meetup on how to get the word out (featuring Kelly Froese of Edmonton Nerd List and Jeff Williams of Guerrilla Radio) is slated to be published in December. As you can see, there tends to be a lag between meetup and audio release, so if you can, join us in real life. The next one will be on Nov. 19 at Variant Edition. Watch for details on the Edmonton Podcasting Meetup page. This episode of Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Castria, where award-winning podcasters help you make your podcast sound great. In this episode, you'll hear Erika Ensign and Steven Schapansky talk about how they got into podcasting and how they use the expertise they've earned over the past decade to help bring other podcasts into the world (including this one).
V (5-6) - Steven and Erika watch a couple more Doctor Who episodes from 1965. Then Erika waxes poetic about a Labyrinth-Doctor Who connection that blew her mind. It was a turning-point episode for some of us, but does it live up to the memories? Listen and see! What do you think of "Dalek"? Is it still (or was it ever) amazing? We bring our year of companions to a close by returning to the very first one, Susan. (Though apparently that distinction is up for debate, as is anything and everything in Doctor Who!) Join Deb, Erika, and Liz as we talk about Susan's tenure on the show and her place in the pantheon of companions. Does she reverberate throughout the history of the show? Or is she an outlier? It's a fun discussion! Then Deb interviews Carole Ann Ford herself at LI Who. Listen in as they chat about Susan from the perspective of the woman who brought her to life! What do you think of Susan? And how do you think she fits into the history of the show? Modern TV has melded the old-school “chapter play” format with modern, lower-cost (and at once higher quality) production methods. The result is episodic content that is more than giving feature-length movies a run for their money. Erika Ensign (Verity, Lazy Doctor Who) joins Strax the Sontarran himself Dan Starkey to reveal how Doctor Who is succeeding where multimillion-dollar franchise features are hit-and-miss.
While we're not so sure this qualifies as part of a two-parter, we agree it's well worth talking about! Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Lynne as we delve into what it means to be immortal with a human brain, the fabulous chemistry Maisie Williams has with Peter Capaldi, some truly fantastic writing, and lots of fawning over highwaymen (by some of us, at least). It's a squee-filled episode, but not entirely without criticism. What did you think of "The Woman Who Lived"? Did you dig the highwayman gig? Did you weep at Lady Me's cruelty? Did you roll your eyes at the big kitty in a crown? We close out our companion miniseries in fine style with Liz's pick, "The Curse of Peladon". Join Deb, Erika, Katrina, and Liz as we discuss Jo's merits as a companion. They are many--especially in this story. There's a lot of Jo love, dissension among the ranks as to which Peladon story is better, and even some soul-searching. It's quite an episode! What do you think about Jo? Is she as awesome as the Verities think? Or do you still see her as a useless screamer? Our companion miniseries continues! This week Deb picked the story, so join her, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we chat about Rose in "The Unquiet Dead". It may not be the first story you think of when you think of Rose, but Deb explains why it's a great pick to demonstrate some of her Roseiest characteristics. What do you think of "The Unquiet Dead" as a Rose story? Does it display her companionness completely? Or would you pick a different story for her? Let us know in the comments! In every story worth its salt, there’s at least one pivot point. We’ve already had a couple in Babylon 5. This one won a Hugo. That made it a perfect time for our Control Group, Steven Schapansky of Radio Free Skaro and Lazy Doctor Who, to come back once more. “He said…pick a target.”
Yes, we assure you this really is episode 74. Pay no attention to the wildly inaccurate introduction claiming we've gotten further than we have. This is what happens when Deb leaves us alone. Join Erika, Liz, and Tansy as we try to cope without our moderating maven. And what are we discussing? We stick to our 2015 theme of companions, but we take it in a different direction this week. We're talking about the companions of a different Time Lord. Yep, from Delgado to Gomez, we're covering the Master's (Missy's) companions! Why does the Master always seem to have lackeys assisting him? We discover the Master's reasons for picking up strays aren't always that different from the Doctor's, though his methods of acquiring these "helpers" is usually quite different. What do you think of the Master's companions? Let us know in the comments! ^E Also covered [links on our site]: Liz discovers a delightful new podcast called Lazy Doctor Who!
