Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

This week, we're joined by Adam Richard, shrunk to a microscopic size, and sent on a mission consisting mostly of ruthless moral self-examination. Meanwhile, somewhere else completely, a romcom is taking place. It's Into the Dalek. Notes and links Some of us are old enough to remember the constant television repeats of Fantastic Voyage (1966), in which a small submarine and its crew are shrunk to microscopic size to remove a blood clot from the brain of a scientist who is defecting to the West. The glamorous catsuited assistant to the crew's chief scientist is played by a young Raquel Welch. Richard identifies as the chief influences on this episode Fantastic Voyage and Rob Shearman's Doctor Who episode Dalek. (Which we discuss on Episode 137, To Mainsplain Aliens.) Of course, Peter Capaldi was most well known for his role in Armando Ianucci's political comedy series The Thick of It, in which he played Malcolm Tucker, the Prime Minister's sweary and frankly terrifying political enforcer. Ianucci will go on to create Veep, in which Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays the hapless Vice President of the United States, and Avenue 5, starring Hugh Laurie as the captain of a luxury space cruiser which goes catastrophically off course. Moffat's first sitcom Joking Apart has been mentioned before on the podcast. Its main character also discovers how terrible he is as a person during the course of the first series. Class was a short-lived and ill-fated Doctor Who spinoff, written by Patrick Ness and set at Coal Hill Academy. Peter Capaldi appears as the Doctor in Episode 1, and the season itself is broadcast between Series 9 and Series 10 of Doctor Who. It is cancelled after the first eight-episode run. Trinity Wells, the American newsreader during the first RTD era, does have her very own Big Finish story: Driving Miss Wells by James Goss, which is part of the second Lives of Captain Jack box set, released in 2019. Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, James is @ohjamessellwood, and Richard is @RichardLStone. The Flight Through Entirety theme was arranged by Cameron Lam. We're also on Facebook, and you can check out our website at flightthroughentirety.com. Please consider rating or reviewing us on Apple Podcasts, or we'll continue to make almost no effort at all to learn any of your names. And more You can find Jodie into Terror, our flashcast on the entirety of the Whittaker Era of Doctor Who, at jodieintoterror.com, at @JodieIntoTerror on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and wherever podcasts can be found. We'll be back with a new flashcast on the second Russell T Davies era in November. Our James Bond commentary podcast is called Bondfinger, and you can find that at bondfinger.com, at @bondfingercast on Twitter, on Apple Podcasts, and everywhere else as well. We can also be heard on the Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power, which has completed its coverage of the first half of the show. And finally, there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. We'll be back with a new episode this coming Friday, but while you're waiting for that, you can still catch our most recent episode, in which Joe and Nathan got together in person for the first time ever to watch the notorious Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Justice.

Tonight, however, we talk about our backgrounds with Big Finish... what we have and haven't heard... what we'd like to do with our Big Finish listening in the future... and most importantly of all, we review THE HOLY TERROR by Rob Shearman, as voted by YOU. Rob Shearman was given the task of bringing the Daleks back to Doctor Who in 2005. But, because this was such a daunting proposition, he decided to make it just about one Dalek. Much easier. Rob has awards coming out of his ears for his fantasy and horror writing, he wrote plays under the auspices of Alan Ayckbourn, works in TV, Radio and comics. In "We All Hear Stories in the Dark" his most recent non-doctor Who publication he has written one of the most unique and ambitious collections of short stories of all time. On #SLEDGEHAMMER we talk about all of this, plus "THE GREATEST SHOW IN THE GALAXY" his process, his tricks and tips, and about the creation of his blindingly good Target novel adaptation of Dalek. It was a cracking conversation. Rob Shearman. All hail.

Day Two of Gallifrey One 2014! We ring in this auspicious occasion with the august personage of Dominic Glynn, musician extraordinaire and composer of what many (well...us, anyway) consider the best arrangement of the classic opening theme. And we continue with the Lovely Person Agenda with the presence of author and bon vivant Rob Shearman and comedian, actor and 60s BBC barman Toby Hadoke, who performed his one-man show "My Stepson Stole my Sonic Screwdriver" here at Gallifrey One only last night! But instead of covering that fine event, we spend 20-odd minutes berating the pair of them for not publishing Volume Two of Running Through Corridors. That's Radio Free Skaro, all class. It was one of the more exciting weeks in Doctor Who recently with global cinema screenings of "The Day of The Doctor" being announced around the world, and Big Finish's 50th anniversary story "The Light At The End" being given an early release, one month before the actual anniversary itself. The resulting chaos showed that no internet site knows the wrath of an impatient group of Doctor Who fans, but at the end of the day, thousands of fans will be watching the 50th Anniversary story in 3D together in cinemas (the Three Who Rule included!) on November 23 and 25. Once the furore of this died down on the podcast, the Skaro boys turn back the clock to delve into the first half of the John Nathan-Turner era in the Miniscope, with the wonderful Rob Shearman! On this episode of The Writer and the Critic, your hosts, Kirstyn McDermott and Ian Mond, decide to eschew their normal thirty-odd minutes of waffle and plunge straight into a discussion of the two titles at hand, Bluegrass Symphony by Lisa L. Hannett and Everyone's Just So So Special by Robert Shearman. As both books are short story collections and also very new releases, there are no spoilers as such. But here are the time stamps anyway: 03:00 for Bluegrass Symphony (yes, that's three minutes -- they really meant it with the eschewing) and 33:00 for Everyone's Just So So Special. Final remarks kick in around 01:21:00. Kirstyn would like to disclaim that she is a judge for both the Australian Shadows and the Aurealis Awards this year, for which Lisa Hannett's stories are eligible, and therefore needs to stress that her opinions of the collection as expressed on this podcast are solely her own and do not necessarily reflect the views of the judging panels for either award. Ian would like to disclaim that he loves Rob Shearman just so so much, and is therefore incapable of holding any objective opinion of his work. So there's that. The Karen Joy Fowler story that is tangentially mentioned can be read online over at Subterranean Press, while Rob Shearman's insane One Hundred Stories project lives here. Next month, Ian and Kirstyn invite John Richards from Boxcutters to be their special podcast guest. John has chosen Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture by Douglas Coupland as for everyone to read, while Ian has selected Room by Emma Donoghue and Kirstyn has recommended The Secret History by Donna Tartt. They will most likely be back to their usual spoilerific form, so read ahead and join in the fun!

This week the podcast has an international flare to it.  First up I review the autobiography, of sorts, American on Purpose by late night talk show host Craig Ferguson as he reveals alot about his past successes and failures.  Then it is off to the east as I give my DVD review of Samurai Jack Season 1 as an ancient warrior fights off the forces of a shape-shifting demon.  Then we journey back a few months for my feature segment and interview with writer Rob Shearman from Who Party 14.  He talks about writing for Big Finish as well as the Doctor Who Series 1 episode Dalek and who his favourite companion is.  You also get extra audio at the top of  the show as I share a lesson learned when it comes to banking and debit cards.  Music for this week features the songs Cost Cut Japan by Raggae Far East and You're my Demon by ODYC, both can be found at www.podsafeaudio.com along with the intro song Let's Get Ramblin by Dynamo Snackbar.  Other instrumental music is by the band Mr. Burns (www.mrburnsmusic.com).  As always your comments and suggestions are welcome

The Three Who Rule continued their blitzkrieg coverage of Gallifrey 2009 with not only a wicked hangover (Warren), jet lag (Chris) and a smug sense of clean living self-satisfaction (Chris), but also a sterling interview with one Rob Shearman, the scribe behind award-winning Big Finish titles such as “Chimes at Midnight,” “Holy Terror,” and “Jubilee,” which was later adapted into “Dalek,” the return of everyone’s favorite mean-tempered pepper pots to the new series. Also joining us was Jason Haigh-Ellery, head honcho of the Big Finish audios who was kind enough to supply us all with sweet, sweet, alcohol. Enjoy!
