For the second of our Edinburgh Fringe 2024 podcasts Ali spoke to musician Jo Mango and theatre-maker Liam Hurley to talk all about A Giant On The Bridge, which is part of the prestigious Made in Scotland showcase, and will be at the Assembly Roxy Central between 2nd-18th August, 10.40am. Jo describes how A Giant On The Bridge came about, emerging from the work of Vox Liminis and their Distant Voices project which explores crime, punishment and reintegration through songwriting and other forms of creative expression, and pairs some of Scotland's best songwriters with people who've experienced the criminal justice system from different angles. Liam then talks about his role with A Giant On The Bridge and the collaborations which are vital to the whole. The two then discuss the nature of the collaborative process, making each story individual, why having multiple musical genres is key, the challenges in making live music theatrical, what audiences can expect, and how their involvement, and reaction, is essential. Described as a gig-theatre event (and for an explanation of that, you'll have to listen to the podcast) it features some of Scotland's finest musicians. As well as Jo herself they include Admiral Fallow's Louis Abbott, Raveloe, Solareye and Louise McCraw (AKA Goodnight Louisa). A Giant On The Bridge promises to be a very special production of music and theatre (but, importantly, not musical theatre), and is shaping up to be one of the highlights of this year's Fringe. Steven Seidenberg is an incredible photographer and in this episode, I spoke with Steven Seidenberg and the writer, Carolyn White about a little-known bit of history in Post World War 2 Italy. His latest book The Architecture of Silence: Abandoned Lives of the Italian South documents the ruins of a failed policy that gave impoverished people a bit of land and housing without the infrastructure needed to sustain a community. The companion book Distant Voices: on Steven Seidenberg's Architecture of Silence is a collection of essays that help put it all into perspective with relevant historical context. Past Lives and Distant Voices is a photography exhibition that explores the concept of anemoia —longing for a time one has never experienced firsthand. Through the lens of photographer Nirmala Karuppiah, one journeys through moments that blur the lines between past and present, reality and memory. We speak to Nirmala, to find out more.

Good morning SNOBBIES! And welcome back to our episode on Terence Davies month. This week we have Jared's pick and he decided to go with “The Long Day Closes.” This film has a similar feel and vibe to Distant Voices, Still Lives. In this film we follow the perspective of Bud, a boy in Liverpool in the 1950's, coming of age around the other family members and the austere Catholic Church as he enters the rigors of school, nurtures a bedazzled love of the movies and longs for companionship. Jared says this is a near perfect film and Terence Davies best film he's ever made. We dive into childhoods, favorite shots, the Davies Dissolve, and much much more. Enjoy! Welcome back Snobbies! This month we are continuing to feature the late Terence Davies and his filmography. This week was Eric's pick and he chose to go with 1988's Distant Voices, Still Lives. A film that has been described as the most important British film ever made, this film was powerful. This film opened up a bit of discussion in all of us about family, fathers, abuse, history, love, pain, and healing. This film delves into the heart of a family and the heart of a human. Joins us In our discussion and enjoy this film. Davies was from the working class and only became a filmmaker in his thirties but made up for lost time with a series of semi-autobiographical, poetic works that drew on his troubled upbringing and instantly put him on the map of international cinema. After some underperforming literary adaptations in the nineties Davies had difficulties getting film financing for several years, but in 2008 he returned to acclaim with his expressionistic and personal documentary about the history of Liverpool, Of Time and the City which kicked off his second wind as a filmmaker through the 2010s including The Deep Blue Sea, Sunset Song and his final work, 2022's biography of the queer anti-war poet and decorated WWI soldier Siegfried Sassoon, Benediction. We discuss Davies' singular vision as an film artist, his innovations in using stock footage and music to express his personal vision, his hilarious distaste for the Catholic Church, the Monarchy and the Beatles, and the sad state of film financing in the UK. Currently Canadian and American listeners can stream Distant Voices, Still Lives and Of Time and the City on Kanopy. Follow Ben Nash and James Slaymaker on Twitter. Kathryn Tickell and The Darkening's new album, Cloud Horizons, fuses synthesizers with a bone flute, a sistrum – very old Egyptian instrument - and lyrics based on an inscription in Latin carved on a stone in Northumberland nearly 2 millennia ago. Kathryn talks to Samira about this ancient Northumbrian futurism and plays her smallpipes, live. We remember the film director Terrence Davis, perhaps best known for the film Distant Voices, who has died aged 77. Samira spoke to him for Front Row last year, about his Netflix drama Benediction, which followed the life of the war poet Siegfried Sassoon. Samira talks to Jhumpa Lahiri, the Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, essayist and editor. Her latest offering Roman Stories marks a return to shorter fiction, presenting snapshots of a city and its unnamed residents in flux. Today the Heritage Fund announces nine ‘Heritage Places' across the UK- the first of twenty to receive a share of £200 million in National Lottery funding over the next 10 years to support local heritage. We hear from Eilish McGuinness, Heritage Fund Chief Executive about how the money will be spent and from Eirwen Hopkins, founder of the heritage group Rich History in Neath Port Talbot, one of the nine places to receive the cash injection. Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Olivia Skinner

Matthew (he/him) and Jo (she/they) are the “Distant Voices” this week saying that this episode of DS9 sucks. We wait as long as possible before we have to actually start talking about this episode, then when we do we discuss “old acting” across Star Trek and we look at what doesn't work in this episode and propose what could have worked better. Matthew asks if we pulled 10 random people off a NYC subway would they be able to do a better acting job in this episode and Jo talks at length about The Man From Snowy River. As always, be prepared that spoilers may be lurking around every corner just like Garak on Empok Nor.Subscribe for weekly recaps of Star Trek Deep Space Nine, follow us online at @TerokNoir on Twitter for silly memes and polls and contact us by e-mail at teroknoirpod@gmail.com

Today's premiere comes in the form of the opener track from “A Long Way,” Jacques Bon, and Drux's forthcoming album. The 8-track LP starts with a bass-heavy, celestial-sounding one-minute opening scene, after which a steady kick enters, surely bound to push every dance floor it's played on into a frenzy. A breakdown follows shortly after, topped by a subtle, chopped vocal sample. A second breakdown occurs, decreasing the energy even more before erupting into insanity again. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album: deep, dubby, and sophisticated. The entire release has common thematic elements woven through it yet is never dull or repetitive. Some are slow-burners perfect for warming up floors, and some will serve as big, memorable peak-time moments. Overall, an incredibly impressive album that will inevitably receive an extremely warm welcome upon its release. Business as usual from the renowned Smallville. “A Long Way" LP will be out on Smallville on July 1, 2022. write up by https://soundcloud.com/sabro96 https://soundcloud.com/jacquesbon https://soundcloud.com/druxdrux https://soundcloud.com/smallville-records Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacquesbon_/ https://www.instagram.com/d.r.u.x/ https://www.instagram.com/smallville_records/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_itsdelayed_ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

48 years after the British jury gave them nul points at the Eurovision song contest, ABBA the avatars begin a long term arena residency in London. Samira talks to the director Baillie Walsh and the choreographer Wayne McGregor about creating the show. Terence Davies, director of some of the finest films ever made in the UK, such as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Long Day Closes, talks to Samira Ahmed about his new film Benediction. It's based on the life of Siegfried Sassoon, one of the great poets of the Great War. As well as writing about its horrors and having fought with great courage, he declared his refusal to take any further part in it because he saw that the people in power, who could bring the suffering to an end, were prolonging the slaughter. The film chronicles his troubled life as a gay man after the war. It is two years tomorrow since George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis. To mark this sad anniversary, we asked the poet Zaffar Kunial, whose first collection Us was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot prize, to reflect on this and see if he could write a poem. He did, and reads Watershed, for the first time.

Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Through the Looking Glass Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 19 of Deep Space Nine: Through the Looking Glass. Yassss! Back to the Mirrorverse! This time it's Sisko who gets pulled into the dark other world by Mirror Miles who has rigged a device to just beam across! Who knew it was so easy?? We've got some bumpy stuff in this episode with a woefully done-wrong-by Dax and some questionable acting by one of the guest stars...but we also get Leather Kira, cowboy Sisko and cranky Garak, so maybe it's not so bad. Through the Looking Glass (Again) We knew Miles was up to something when he turned up in Ops in a new outfit that was not his uniform, his rebel outfit or his sexy Keiko-only outfit. And we were right...this is not our beloved Chief, it's Mirror Miles and he's come to kidnap Sisko. So Sisko finally gets a taste of the Mirrorverse and at first he's not so thrilled to be there, but then he finds out that his wife Jennifer is still around in this universe. So he thinks you know what, maybe I'll hang out here a bit and he embarks on a mission to save Jennifer from herself and the Alliance. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet, The Wire or Past Tense Part II and check out the previous episode, Distant Voices (and all of its tennis balls). Next time... Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Distant Voices Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 3 Episode 18 of Deep Space Nine: Oh My Tennis Balls! Just kidding....it's time for Distant Voices. In this episode we talk about Lutherans, muppets and tennis balls (there are a lot of tennis balls). We also get a look deep into the crevices of Julian's brain...and it turns out those crevices really aren't that deep. Distant Voices Julian meets an unpleasant Lutheran...or was it Lethian...who is trying to acquire an illegal medical substance. When Julian doesn't help, the alien attacks him sending him into a trap inside of his own mind (that looks a lot like the station). While Julian runs around the nearly abandoned station he encounters Garak playing tennis, Miles who is afraid of his own shadow and tennis balls falling from panels.
