Au Honduras, où les médias sont concentrés entre les mains de quelques puissants, une soixantaine de radios communautaires résistent, souvent dans la clandestinité. Marie Griffon et Célia Pousset nous emmènent à la rencontre de responsables de ces radios qui utilisent les ondes pour défendre leurs terres et leur culture malgré les menaces. « Waruguma signifie étoile, une étoile lumineuse qui sert de guide à tout le peuple. » Ainsi parle Horacio Martínez, directeur de la radio du même nom, à Trujillo. Dans un pays classé 132e sur 180 au classement mondial 2026 de la liberté de la presse de Reporters sans frontières (RSF), des petites stations comme Waruguma sont souvent le seul moyen pour les populations de s'informer hors des canaux officiels. Le Honduras est le pays le plus pauvre d'Amérique latine après Haïti, selon le Fonds monétaire international (FMI). Gangrené par la corruption et le crime organisé, le pays est aux mains d'une poignée de familles industrielles qui possèdent la quasi-totalité des journaux et télévisions. Face à cela, les radios communautaires s'efforcent d'informer dans les zones rurales isolée et deviennent parfois des cibles. Le défi de la légalité Pour exister, ces radios doivent faire preuve de courage. Au Honduras, les fréquences sont mises aux enchères et s'arrachent à des prix inaccessibles pour des associations. « Ici, dans le Nord, une fréquence a déjà été adjugée pour 12,5 millions de lempiras (plus de 400 000 euros) », explique Jorge Andino, directeur de Play FM. Pour ces médias sans publicité, impossible de réunion une telle somme. Résultat : la majorité des 70 radios communautaires du pays opèrent sans licence légale. « La communication communautaire n'est ni légitimée ni reconnue par l'État. C'est comme marcher en permanence sur la corde raide. C'est vivre à la limite », déplore Jorge Andino. Sans reconnaissance, ces radios risquent à tout moment la saisie de leur matériel, voire la prison pour leurs animateurs, sur simple dénonciation d'un homme d'affaires influent. Au manque de protection juridique s'ajoute la précarité technique. Dans les studios souvent installés chez l'habitant, on utilise des ventilateurs de fortune pour refroidir des émetteurs de faible puissance. Lors des orages, faute de paratonnerres, les stations doivent souvent couper l'antenne pour ne pas perdre leur unique outil de diffusion. Informer, au plus près des communautés Plus au sud, à la frontière avec le Nicaragua, la Radio Cholula Triunfeña ouvre son antenne aux paysans locaux. Ici, on insonorise les murs avec des dizaines de boîtes d'œufs collées les unes aux autres. Wilfredo Hernández Cruz, le directeur, y défend une parole sans artifice : « Parlez comme vous êtes, car c'est justement cela l'essentiel : que les habitants des zones rurales aient accès à un micro. » Mais cette liberté a un prix. Située dans une zone de trafic de drogue et de traite d'êtres humains, la radio dérange les pouvoirs économiques et mafieux en dénonçant les investissements opaques et les concessions minières. « Nous avons déjà perdu des camarades qui ont été attaqués, persécutés, réduits au silence », confie Wilfredo Cruz. Les menaces sont directes : appels anonymes, piratages de téléphones ou encore l'envoi d'une balle dans une boîte pour signifier à un journaliste de cesser ses enquêtes. Amanda Ponce, directrice de C Libre (Comité pour la libre expression), souligne que l'État hondurien a longtemps occulté cette réalité. « Il y a deux décennies d'assassinats de journalistes qui sont aujourd'hui complètement effacées par l'État », précise-t-elle. Depuis les années 1980, le schéma reste le même : éliminer ceux qui mettent en lumière la corruption et les liens entre banques, narcotrafic et pouvoir politique. L'héritage de Berta Cáceres Dans les montagnes froides de l'ouest, le peuple Lenca poursuit un combat emblématique. C'est ici que la célèbre militante écologiste Berta Cáceres a fondé la radio Guarajambala avant d'être assassinée en 2016. Pour le COPINH (Conseil civique des organisations populaires et indigènes du Honduras), la radio est l'un des seuls moyen de mobiliser les communautés contre les projets extractifs qui menacent leurs rivières. Aujourd'hui, une nouvelle génération prend le micro. Leiby, une journaliste de 25 ans, a été formée dans l'école Voix des Rivières créée par l'organisation. Pour elle, la mission est claire : « Nous dénonçons, nous devenons la voix des communautés. Nous sommes la voix des grandes injustices que nous subissons dans ce pays. » Malgré la violence, ces radios continuent tant bien que mal de diffuser. Elles font entendre des musique indigènes ou alternatives, des langues en recul comme le Garifuna, elles racontent l'histoire de ces communautés marginalisées et créent une solidarité qui dépasse désormais les frontières. En l'absence de médias nationaux lors de la commémoration de l'assassinat de Berta Caceres, ce sont des radios communautaires du Guatemala et du Costa Rica qui sont venues prêter main-forte à leurs sœurs honduriennes. Ces ondes, bien que fragiles, restent un espace où l'on peut « inviter les gens à rêver ». Dans un pays où certains tentent de les faire taire, les radios communautaires prouvent chaque jour que la parole radiodiffusée est un pouvoir que l'on ne peut pas totalement éteindre.

Just as his father cried out "Leiby, turn!" while watching security footage too late to help, so too does our tradition call for us to turn—to do teshuvah (repentance). R' Leiby Burnham, MSW, is a Rabbi, psychotherapist, and writer. R' Burnham is the senior educator for the Weiss Family Partners Detroit program of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, where he does community outreach, and leads Jewish travel experiences in the US and abroad. He taught learning-disabled high school students for eight years in NYC, while receiving Rabbinical training at Shor Yoshuv Institute, and obtaining his Masters in Social Work from Yeshiva University. To round out his Jewish communal experience he spent five years working with at-risk youth in NYC, and six years volunteering with Chai Lifeline, a pioneer in social support for Jewish children suffering from serious illness. R' Burnham lives in Oak Park, MI with his wife and their six children. Richard Leiby is one of the most respected journalists in the United States. He was one of the first reporters to write about Scientology in the 1980s and he has covered the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. For several years he was the bureau chief in Pakistan for the Washington Post. He is now senior writer and editor Style Section of the Washington Post where he has worked for nearly 25 years.    I have been friends with him for exactly 20 years now, we met at the first HBO Aspen comedy festival in February 1995 and he also wrote about me and my Dad in April 1995 when I made Viva Vietnam! for Comedy Central and that special premiered in Washington D.C. He is one of the wise Buddhas in my life who I can go to to decipher the chaos of world events or if I need a source of higher world knowledge.   We have gotten together every year when I come to D.C. with the exception of those few years he was based in Pakistan. With all of the heart wrenching world events happening lately it was a perfect time to sit down with him and talk about events and the workings of modern journalism.    This conversation was recorded at the Washington Post on a brutally cold February afternoon but it contains the warm glow of two decades of friendship.
