Orlando emphasizes that they are not patriarchal warnings, admonitions, or “chewing outs,” but rather tools to help individuals understand their divine worth. Preparation as a Patriarch: The process involves intense, ongoing spiritual preparation. Orlando explains that he often feels like a “faucet that cannot be turned off” in the days leading up to a blessing, as he studies scriptures and topics prompted by the Holy Ghost to prepare his mind to receive impressions. Mortal Delivery of Revelation: Patriarchs receive inspiration, but they must articulate it using their own mortal capacity, vocabulary, and understanding. Consequently, a patriarchal blessing is a collaboration between the Spirit and the patriarch’s mortal expression. The Fallacy of the “Checklist”: Recipients should avoid viewing their blessings as a list of required events (e.g., marriage, missions, children) to be checked off. Instead, they should see the blessing as a resource to be applied to all of life’s decisions, challenges, and experiences. Understanding Lineage: The declaration of lineage is not a DNA test but an invitation to participate in the Abrahamic covenant and the gathering of Israel. Each tribe's unique description provides a different “skill set” for how an individual can contribute to the Lord’s work. Leadership Applications Alleviate Anxiety: Leaders can help reduce the nervousness people feel about visiting a patriarch by fostering opportunities for the patriarch to interact with ward members (e.g., firesides, sacrament meetings, or activities) beforehand, making him a familiar figure rather than a stranger. Foster a Broad Interpretation: Bishops and leaders should encourage members to interpret their patriarchal blessings with flexibility. When members feel confused by their blessing, leaders can help them understand that the meanings may evolve and deepen as they face different stages and challenges in life. The Wisdom of Abundance: Physical and Spiritual Necessity Welcome to our daily Bitachon Shaar Bechinah series. This is a very important lesson from the Chovot Halevavot , teaching us about the wisdom of God: whatever we need for our survival can be found in abundance, and whatever is a luxury is less available. Again, this is from the wisdom of God. If the world were haphazard, you wouldn't see this pattern. This design is one of the greatest signs of God's creation. The Hierarchy of Physical Needs Air: Air is breathable, and you cannot survive without it for even a moment. Therefore, God made it so that air is everywhere; there is no place where you cannot get it. Imagine if you had to buy air in bottles—you would constantly be running out. Water: Water is next on the list. While not as immediate as air, dehydration is still a serious issue. Therefore, water is everywhere. It covers the oceans, and while you sometimes have to pay for it—in the old days to a water carrier, or today for a bottle of Poland Spring—it is highly available. Food: You can last longer without food than you can without water. Consequently, food is available, but it is a little harder to get; you have to work harder for it. Clothing: You can survive without clothing for a quite long time. It is important, so our sources for clothing (like wool) are readily available, but it requires effort. Luxuries: When it comes to expensive jewelry, gold, silver, and luxury goods, these are commodities we don't actually need. The only reason luxury goods have any value is because humanity collectively agreed to it. Inherently, a diamond has no real value—it is not like a medicine. It's just that everyone said, "Hey, diamonds look nice." Because it has no inherent value, it is not abundant. In fact, if it were abundant, it would lose all its value because everyone would have it. God created luxury goods to be less available precisely because they are not necessary. Look at how God turns the wheels of creation! The author of the Chovot Halevavot expresses his sheer amazement at this larger picture of divine wisdom, exclaiming: ישתבח הבורא החכם החומל המרחם על עבדיו אשר עינו עליהם לטובה בכל מה שהם בו תקנתם אין אלוה מבלעדיו "Praised is the Creator, the wise, compassionate, and merciful One, Who watches over His servants for good, providing everything necessary for their well-being. There is none besides Him." He then quotes a pasuk (verse) from Yonah, where God corrects the prophet: "You, Yonah, cared about a transient plant that you didn't work for or develop, which was here today and gone tomorrow. Should I then not have compassion on Nineveh, the great city?" God is saying: I care about creation; I care about the world. As David HaMelech (King David) says: טוב ה׳ לכל ורחמיו על כל מעשיו ( "Hashem is good to all, and His mercy is upon all His works" ). The Spiritual Parallel: Emuna is Our Air The Alter (Elder) of Kelm takes this principle a step further. If this rule is true in the physical world—that whatever you need most is most available—surely it applies to the spiritual world as well. Whatever my neshama (soul) needs most must be the most accessible. For example, the mitzvah of sending away a mother bird ( Shiluch HaKen ) is obviously not as vital for daily spiritual survival, otherwise it would be more accessible. Of course, all mitzvot are necessary, but that one is not a daily requirement. Mitzvot that are more vital are easily available. If I need tzitzit , I can make them easily, just like clothing. But what is the absolute spiritual necessity? What is our spiritual air? Our air is emuna (faith). As the verse says, צדיק באמונתו יחיה ( "The righteous person lives by his faith" ). We live on this air. Therefore, Hashem gives us opportunities at every single step to strengthen our emuna —whether it is by looking at creation, recognizing God's hashgacha (divine providence), or engaging with His Torah. The opportunities for emuna are endless. The Element of Choice There is only one difference between physical air and the "air" of emuna . Because God cares about us so much, He did not want to leave physical breathing up to our conscious choice; if we had to actively decide to breathe, we might forget one day and die. When it comes to emuna , however, God made it highly accessible, but it requires our attention. If you don't think about it and pay attention to it, you won't see it. We can easily ignore miracles if we choose not to contemplate them. Recognizing the Signs Consider the examples we have spoken about recently: The Survival of the Jewish People: The Jewish people exist to this day simply because Hashem made a promise to Avraham Avinu, and that promise is being fulfilled right now. Eretz Yisrael: God promised that the Land of Israel belongs to us forever. What other being could make a promise like that and sustain it, if not the Creator? Job writes in the pasuk : מבשרי אחזה אלוה ( "From my flesh I see God" , Iyov 19:26). God made it so that you can see Him right from your own body, placing the opportunity for awareness right in front of you. Because remembering Yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus from Egypt) is so critical, God surrounds us with it every single day through Tefillin , Tzitzit , and the Mezuzah . This shows the wonder of our caring, preparing God. Ultimately, this principle goes both ways: How do you know something is important? By how much of it exists. The fact that Yetzias Mitzrayim and emuna are emphasized so heavily throughout the Torah—and that we recite Kriyas Shema twice a day—proves just how vital they truly are. Working on our Emuna and Bitachon is our greatest necessity, and that is exactly what we are here doing.
At the end of this week's parasha Naso , the Torah goes into great detail regarding the donations that the Nasi'im brought to inaugurate the Mishkan . And as we know, each Nasi brought the exact same donation and the Torah repeated each one of them, twelve times, one for each Nasi . Many mefarshim offer explanations as to why the Torah has all this repetition. The sefer Darkeh Musar brings from the Saba m'Kelm who explained, the Torah is teaching us here how Hashem relates to the individual. One should not think if a large group gets together to do a mitzvah that Hashem views it as if that group, so to speak, all got a check for their actions. The parasha of the Nasi'im teaches us, Hashem is happy with each individual separately. Although they all brought the same donations and collectively comprised a group of twelve, Hashem took delight in each one of them independently. Each one of them brought Hashem a different type of joy, depending on the person's background and what each of them had accomplished and experienced in their lives prior to this point. Everyone is always treated as if he is the only one in the world. And this does not only apply when a group of people get together to do a mitzvah. This is always the way it is. When something happens to a group of people, Hashem doesn't deal with them as a group, but rather every single person, with his own hashgacha . Whatever happens to him was decided solely based on what was supposed to happen to him. And the way a person reacts when things happen to him will show how much he really believes in Hashem's hashgacha . The Shomer Emunim writes, if we would know how valuable it is to honestly believe that every single thing that takes place in our lives comes directly from Hashem, our hearts would ignite with endless excitement. Furthermore, the pasuk says, ה' צילך – that Hashem is our shadow. And the Baal Shem Tov explained this to mean that Hashem acts towards us corresponding to the way we act towards Him. If a person says each time that something happens that it was from Hashem, then Hashem will deal with him with extra hashgacha pratit . He will be able to feel Hashem's presence more and he will get more Heavenly help. The pasuk says in Tehillim , ה' משמים השקיף על בני-אדם לראות היש משכיל דורש את אלוקים – Hashem is watching to see who is wise enough to seek Him out. The word אלוקים represents טבע which is nature. And as we know, הטבע is the same numerical value as אלוקים . So the pasuk is saying, Hashem is watching to see who will find Him inside of nature, who will attribute what seems to be natural occurrences, to Him. For this, a person must train himself until instinctively, he is able to say about everything, "That was m'et Hashem." When someone becomes a person who is fully ma'amin in Hashem's constant hashgacha , he will never get angry, he will never have animosity towards anyone, he will save himself from countless averot and he will get a mitzvah aseh each time he believes in Hashem's hashgacha , based on the pasuk, אנכי ה' אלוקיך אשר הוצאתיך מארץ מצרים. The Shomer Emunim gives the following words of chizuk to help strengthen us in this area. He writes, fortunate is the person who is constantly strengthening himself in the area of emunah called hashgacha pratit , because the reward for it in this world is that Hashem will show the person ניסים ונפלאות – miracles and wonders. And therefore, our job as religious Jews is to look at every single thing that takes place in our lives, whether it is obvious good or whether it seems to look bad, and attribute it to Hashem and know that it is absolute good and praise and thank Him for it. We constantly needed to be reminded about this great avodah . May Hashem help us to always see His hand in everything that takes place. Shabbat Shalom.
Daily Bitachon: Sha'ar Habechina — Lesson 96 Welcome to our daily dose of Bitachon. We are continuing in Sha'ar Habechina . Yesterday, we spoke about contemplating the ultimate benefit God gave us: the Torah, and the open miracles He performed to strengthen our emunah in that Torah—miracles like the Splitting of the Sea and Ma'amad Har Sinai . Now, this raises a seemingly obvious challenge: we don't see those types of open miracles today. To address this, the Chovot HaLevavot makes an unbelievable statement. He writes that if a person in our times wants to see something akin to the Splitting of the Sea or Ma'amad Har Sinai , they only need to look with a "true eye" at our very existence among the nations. Look at the fact that we have survived in exile from the time of the destruction of the Temple until this very day. We are surviving amongst them—and not just surviving, but thriving. We thrive even though we fundamentally disagree with them internally and externally, and even though they are well aware of it. More than that, we are quite often more successful than those around us in our financial status, or we find ourselves in a better, more protected situation even during wartime. Look at the difference between their middle class and our middle class; we just seem to be doing better. It is a miracle—not just that we are doing well, but that we even exist at all after waves of persecution, pogroms, expulsions, inquisitions, and the Holocaust. Yet, here we are today. This is the literal fulfillment of Hashem's eternal promise to us in Leviticus : " וְאַף גַּם זֹאת בִּהְיוֹתָם בְּאֶרֶץ אֹיְבֵיהֶם לֹא מְאַסְתִּים וְלֹא גְעַלְתִּים לְכַלֹּתָם לְהָפֵר בְּרִיתִי אִתָּם " (And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break My covenant with them). It is interesting to note that we read this pasuk every single year in Parashat Bechukotai , just two weeks before the holiday of Shavuot. We read it then so that "the year and its curses may come to an end." And the final words of comfort in those curses guarantee that, after everything is said and done, we will survive. As Ezra HaSofer later declared: we are slaves, but even in our slavery, God has not forsaken us. Similarly, in Tehillim 124, it says: "Lulai Hashem shehaya lanu yomar na Yisrael" —if not for Hashem being on our side, how could Israel ever have survived the galut ? The rest of that mizmor paints the exact same picture. The Verdict of History The Kuzari , in his second ma'amar (letter 33), notes that if any other nation were to be dispersed across the globe the way we were, their total assimilation would be guaranteed. He points out that we have seen this happen throughout history. We watched it happen to the Romans, and to Amon and Moav, which were once massive world powers. Aram was a great power; so were Peleshet, Kasdim, Madai, Paras, and Yavan. These were the empires of the world! He notes that so many others like them have simply vanished from the face of the earth—whether it's the ancient empires or the Aztecs—leaving nothing behind. Yet, here we are. The Elder of Kelm, in his sefer on emunah (page 99), writes: Who would ever believe that a nation so completely separated from all other nations could survive like this? Where do they even get their parnassa (livelihood) from as they are being bounced around from country to country? He suggests that if you were to stand there at the time of the Churban Beit HaMikdash (the Destruction of the Temple), watching the Jewish people being pulled down to Babylonia in shackles, or later dragged off to Rome, you would think there was absolutely no way this nation would ever be a nation again. You would never imagine that not only would they survive, but they would be respected, they would be close to kingdoms, and they would eventually even be accused of controlling the world! Who could have envisioned such a reality? It is nothing short of a miracle. The Hidden, Ongoing Miracle While the Chovot HaLevavot gently frames this as something "similar" to an open miracle, Rabbi Yaakov Emden goes a step further. In the introduction to his Siddur , he writes: "Chai Hashem" —I swear by the Living God—that when I look at the survival of the Jewish nation from the time of the Churban , it is in my eyes "yoter mikal hanissim vehamofetim she'asu b'Mitzrayim" —even greater than all the miracles and wonders performed in Egypt! Rav Yechezkel Levenstein, in his sefer Torah VeDa'at , analyzes the exact wording of the Chovot HaLevavot : "Veyivakesh adam bazman hazeh lirot..." (If a person seeks to see it in this time...). He points out that the author adds the words "yabit be'ein ha'emet" —one must look with the eye of truth. Why? Because this miracle is hidden. If you want to, you can try to explain our survival away with politics, economics, or sociology. It becomes an open miracle only for the person who is actively looking for the truth. Rav Chatzkel explains that this is just like the phrase we say in Hallel , "Lemakeh melachim gedolim... ki le'olam chasdo" (To Him Who smote great kings, for His kindness is everlasting). That reality is ongoing right now; it is just happening behind the scenes. Mark Twain's Witness We can beautifully conclude this idea with the famous 1899 essay, Concerning the Jews , written by Mark Twain. He captured this exact concept from a historical perspective, writing: "The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?" These are incredibly powerful words coming from a Gentile writer—someone who possessed that very "discerning eye" the Chovot HaLevavot spoke about, recognizing the living miracle of the Jewish people.

A conference leader who still loves being a Sunday greeter sounds simple until you hear what he's carried. Harry Kelm joins us from Edmonton, Alberta to tell the story behind 37 years of pastoral ministry and his current role as executive director of the North American Baptist Conference (NAB). We start with the roots: a German-speaking immigrant church in Milwaukee, a childhood faith shaped by belonging, and the moment that “ought to” religion became a love relationship with God that still fuels his leadership today. From there, Harry walks us through the real path of vocational calling: Bible school that kept extending, seminary formation, and a series of ministry moves across the Midwest, the Pacific Northwest, and Canada. He shares what he learned when confidence outpaced wisdom, why some seasons taught him “maybe you shouldn't have done that,” and how a hurting pastor and a hurting church can heal together. If you care about pastoral resilience, church revitalization, and long-term discipleship, these stories land with honesty and hope. If this conversation helps you lead with more clarity and kindness, subscribe, share it with a pastor or church planter, and leave a review so more leaders can find it. Shabbat: Zecher l'Yetziat Mitzrayim Welcome to our daily Bitachon. Today, Friday, we have our special Shabbat Dvar Torah. It is interesting to note that in this week's Parashah, Parashat Yitro, we find the Aseret HaDibrot where one of the Ten Commandments is זכור את יום השבת לקדשו —"Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it." We also know that in Parashat Vaetchanan, we read the second version of the Dibrot , which says שמור את יום השבת —"Keep the Sabbath day." The main difference between the two—besides Zachor and Shamor —is that the first Dibrot tell us to remember Shabbat vis-à-vis Maaseh Bereishit (the Creation). God is the One Who created the world; therefore, we work for six days and rest on the seventh to remember that He, too, created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. The second Dibrot , however, speak about remembering Yetziat Mitzrayim (the Exodus). Now, it is quite obvious what Maaseh Bereishit has to do with Shabbat—it's the six-and-one pattern. But what exactly about Shabbat causes us to remember the Exodus? This is a simple but vital question, because every Friday night in Kiddush we mention both: Zecher le'Maaseh Bereishit and Zecher l'Yetziat Mitzrayim . The Power of Association Remembering something means that a specific trigger sparks a memory—an association of sorts. For example, if I say the word "orange," what do you think of? Some might say the color, some the fruit, and some might think of Florida. That is an association. If I say the word "mask," what does that mean to you? It could mean Corona; it could mean Purim. The word triggers a specific memory. In that sense, a mask could be Zecher l'Corona or Zecher l'Purim . So, when I hear the word "Shabbat," why do I think of Yetziat Mitzrayim ? It is an important question because the Torah places it right in the Ten Commandments and we repeat it in our Kiddush. Two Reasons for the Connection We will offer two reasons, though I am sure there are many more: Ownership of Time: The simplest reason, cited by most Rishonim , is that a servant does not own his own time. A slave cannot simply decide to take a rest; they are subjected to backbreaking work. If you are in a slave labor camp, you don't just take a nap in the middle of the day. If you can take a nap, it's an indication that you are in charge of your own time—you are the boss, not the slave. Therefore, when we rest on Shabbat—when you take your Shabbat afternoon nap—think to yourself: "I have the right to take a nap. I own my time." That only happened because Hashem took us out of Mitzrayim. The Scrolls of Faith: Many of us know that even before the Exodus, Shabbat existed for the Jews in Egypt. When Moshe was a newly appointed prince, he asked his stepfather, Pharaoh, to give the workers a day off, arguing they would work better with rest. The day he chose was Shabbat. On those days, Moshe distributed scrolls which the people would read to strengthen their Emunah . When we take that day off today, it reminds us of the Shabbat we had in Mitzrayim, and how we used that time to strengthen our Emunah and Bitachon . Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetsky notes that if you read Mizmor Shir L'Yom HaShabbat (Tehillim 92), it doesn't actually talk about Shabbat. So why is it the "Song for the Sabbath Day"? He explains that starting from Tefillah L'Moshe (Tehillim 90), there are eleven chapters written by Moshe Rabbeinu. These were the very scrolls he gave out to the slaves in Egypt to give them chizuk . Mizmor Shir L'Yom HaShabbat contains the concept of Tzaddik Katamar Yifrach —that the righteous will blossom while the wicked are cut down—and concludes Tzuri Velo Avlatah Bo , that God is our Rock and there is no iniquity in Him. That was the chizuk they practiced in Mitzrayim on Shabbat. Deepening the Experience So, we have two ways Shabbat triggers the memory of the Exodus: Remembering that we are free people who own our time. Remembering the spiritual preparation we did while still in slavery. I also saw a beautiful thought from the Alter of Kelm regarding how we can maintain excitement for Shabbat week after week. He says you have to delve deeper. You have to really think into these topics—think into Maaseh Bereishit and Yetziat Mitzrayim . The more you delve into them, the more you will appreciate and gain from the day. Shabbat Shalom.

Ved. Kristina Toleikienė
We've spent ten days preparing for Yom Kippur, and now comes the moment of truth: can a person really change—permanently? Most people think it's impossible. By middle age, after trying and failing so many times, we make peace with our flaws. But the Torah teaches there is another way. It's a miracle—but it follows a clear formula. In this shiur, we explore the Rambam's five steps of teshuva, the Midrash on “Kol dodi dofek,” and the insights of Reb Yisrael Salanter and the Alter of Kelm. You'll learn how even the smallest act of teshuva—the size of a needle—can open the gates for Hashem to do the heavy lifting, bringing about real, lasting transformation. This is not about taking on huge commitments or impossible goals. It's about choosing something tiny, something real, and letting Hashem turn that pinhole into a doorway wide enough for wagons.Perfect listening before Yom Kippur—for clarity, focus, and hope. visit https://www.lawrencekelemen.com/ for more free lectures

How do we authentically mourn something we've never seen or experienced? The destruction of the Temple presents a unique spiritual challenge—connecting to a loss that occurred thousands of years before our time. This profound question leads us on a journey through Jewish wisdom about making the intangible tangible. Drawing from the teachings of Rav Reuven Leuchter and the Alter of Kelm, we discover how imagination serves as our bridge to the past. Just as Moshe Rabbeinu physically shouldered burdens to understand his people's suffering, our Tisha B'Av practices—sitting on the floor, chanting lamentations, fasting—create a tangible environment that activates our spiritual imagination. The concept of proximity (kiruv) emerges as central to understanding what was lost. The Temple represented the ultimate closeness with the Divine, a place where heaven and earth met. Its courtyard (azara) draws from the same root as "help" (ezer), revealing its purpose as the place that helped our prayers ascend. King Solomon's dedication prayer emphasizes this role—the Temple was fundamentally a house of prayer, the gateway through which all spiritual communication flowed. The heartbreaking story of Leiby Kletzky, who took a wrong turn with tragic consequences, serves as a powerful metaphor. Just as his father cried out "Leiby, turn!" while watching security footage too late to help, so too does our tradition call for us to turn—to do teshuvah (repentance). The destruction came from baseless hatred and self-centeredness; rebuilding begins with turning toward what truly matters.Whether you're deeply connected to Jewish tradition or exploring these concepts for the first time, this exploration offers practical wisdom for connecting to our collective past and finding meaning in ancient grief. Through strengthened prayer, imagination, and genuine empathy, we might help bring about the rebuilding we've awaited for so long.Support the showJoin The Motivation Congregation WhatsApp community for daily motivational Torah content!---------------- SUBSCRIBE to The Weekly Parsha for an insightful weekly talk on the week's Parsha. On our quest to acquire perfect emunah and think correctly, we want to purify our minds with the right hashkafa according to the Torah. The pasuk in parashat Ekev warns, if a person becomes well-to-do, he will forget about Hashem, saying, it is my might and strength that made me this wealth. The Saba from Kelm points out, the Torah does not say, maybe he will say this, because the nature of a person is to automatically think that way. It is only with proper training that we can uproot this thought process. If we see a successful businessman, what are our thoughts about his wealth? Do we think about what appear to be the immediate causes that brought him his wealth, like the product he sells or the stocks he bought? Or do we think that Hashem wanted him to be wealthy and He gave him his wealth? If we see an army successful in battle, do we think about their great strategies and war tactics? Or do we attribute their success to HaKadosh Baruch Hu? This is one way in which we could test our level of emunah, seeing if our initial thoughts have adapted to the way that Hashem wants us to think. The Gemara says in Masechet Berachot that Rav Huna had four hundred barrels of wine that soured, and when the Rabbis heard about it, they immediately told him to check into his deeds. Rav Huna asked the Rabbis why they suspected him of doing something wrong, and they replied, because without a question it was Hashem who made the wine sour, and it was a kapara for something that the Rabbi did wrong. Rav Huna looked into his deeds and indeed discovered his error in a different business dealing, and right after he made teshuvah , the issue of the wine went away. The baalei mussar point out from here, usually the way it works is when someone experiences some type of misfortune like this, he thinks about all the different natural causes of why the wine may have spoiled, but Chazal are teaching us with their pure emunah that the natural causes don't matter. Everything that takes place is because of Hashem. If we fix what Hashem wants us to fix, then the issue goes away. The Apta Rav used to say, the way of the world is when someone makes a certain hishtadlut and it doesn't work out the way he hoped, he thinks, “If only I would have done things differently, then I might have gotten what I wanted.” If the person said something he wishes he didn't say, he would think, “If only I would have said something else, then I would have gotten what I wanted.” Both of those reactions are incorrect. The outcome that took place was exactly the outcome that Hashem wanted to take place. And if the outcome could have been different because of different words or a different hishtadlut , then Hashem would have put those thoughts in the person's brain at the time he was making the hishtadlut . It is extremely difficult for someone to put in a lot of effort into something and then believe that the result had nothing to do with his efforts. But this is the way Hashem wants us to think, because this is the absolute truth. This is the way He runs the world. Even if someone says, “I did it and Hashem helped me do it,” that is tarnished emunah. אין עוד מלבדו , there is nothing other than Hashem. He doesn't need our help. He wants us to put in our efforts for various reasons. One of them is to test us in this very area, to see if we'll believe it was Him, even though we had to put in the effort. The more we train ourselves to think this way, the better we'll get at it. And b'ezrat Hashem, we will train ourselves to the point where our initial thoughts are with pure emunah.

Yahrtzeit Yomi #1059!! טו אייר Rav Avraham Eliyahu Kaplan רב אברהם אליהו ב״ר אברהם אליהו (1890 - 1924) ON HIS 100TH YAHRTZEIT!! ---------------------------------------------------- A little more than a century ago, 17-year-old Avrohom Eliyahu Kaplan composed an all-time classic poem titled Shakah Chamah, a ballad of mussar that speaks to the futility of life. For many years, the poor, lonely, and sick have found company in these meaningful lyrics. In truth, this young tzaddik faced personal challenges, beginning even before his birth: Avrohom Eliyahu was named after his father, who was known as the Rakover Iluy and who died a few months before he was born. Avrohom Eliyahu, a passionate and fiery young man, first attended the Talmud Torah of Kelm. After a short while, he moved on to the Slabodka Yeshiva, where he learned with great hasmadah, under the tutelage of the famed Alter of Slabodka, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel. Waging battle against the forces of secular Zionism and Haskalah from the time that he was a young bachur. Avrohom Eliyahu utilized his unique talents to write fearless essays and enthralling poems in the areas of Torah, Mussar, and Yiras Shamayim. A talented musician, he composed a number of mesmerizing songs, as well. One incredible story personifies his gadlus. Rav Avrohom Eliyahu was present at the Sheva Berachos of a Slabodka talmid, Rav Aharon Kotler, who married Chana Perel Meltzer, the daughter of the great Rav Isser Zalman. In honor of the celebration, Rav Aharon delivered a two-hour shtickel Torah. After he finished, Rav Avrohom Eliyahu stood up and promptly repeated the entire shtickel… in grammen form! When, years later, an incredulous talmid shared this story with Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman, rosh yeshivah of Ner Israel, he responded that it is certainly possible, as such was the brilliance of Rav Avrohom Eliyahu. Rebbetzin Ruderman, the daughter of Rav Sheftel Kramer and first cousin of Rebbetzin Kotler, overheard the conversation and shared a postscript. “Not only is it possible that it happened, but I was there! And Rav Isser Zalman's son played the violin as Rav Avrohom Eliyahu sang the grammen.” Although Slabodka emphasized gadlus ha'adam, the greatness of man, Avrohom Eliyahu composed the words to Shakah Chamah with an altogether different mindset. Drawing forth from the sobering teachings of RavYisrael Salanter, the father of the mussar movement, the lyrics portray a tormented young man infused with yiras Shamayim, who tries to wage war against the relentless efforts of the yetzer hara, yet finds his neshamah, his soul, sinking into the emptiness and darkness of the abyss. ...(for remainder of tribute see WhatsApp group) --------------------------------------------------- Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!! https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk --------------------------------------------------- To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email yahrtzeityomidaily@gmail.com. Yahrtzeit Yomi #949!! ו אדר Rav Dovid Povarsky רב יהושע דוד ב״ר שלום ראש ישיבת פוניבז׳ (1902 - 1999) Special 25th Yahrtzeit Edition!! ---------------------------------------------- Today, Thursday, 6 Adar, marks the 25th Yahrtzeit of Rav (Yehoshua) Dovid Povarsky ZTL, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. In his youth, Rav Dovid was a close talmid of Rav Aaron Kotler ZTL in the Slutzk Yeshiva, and later joined the Mirrer Yeshiva where he developed his lifelong connection to the Mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz ZTL. After World War I, he married and moved to Baranovitch where he became a chavrusa of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Elchonon Wasserman ZTL. Rav Dovid's reputation spread, and he received an invitation to join the staff of the noted Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, which he ultimately declined, preferring instead to continue learning and teaching in Baranovitch. For more than half a century, Rav Dovid served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Ponovezh in Bnei Brak, where he taught and guided thousands of worthy disciples, who staunchly continue the legacy of the venerated Rosh Yeshiva until today. For several decades, Rav Dovid's daily routine was to awaken at 3 AM, and to walk from his home in Bnei Brak to the nearby Ponovezh Yeshiva, where he would learn Torah until Shacharis. Nothing would impede him from this regimen; neither inclement weather, nor declining health. Like a disciplined soldier in the royal guard, Rav Dovid maintained his post, studying assiduously for a four-hour, uninterrupted stretch, come what may. In his later years, after he had slipped and fallen twice, his family, concerned for his safety, arranged for two of his closest Talmidim to escort him daily. Once, during a very stormy, windy night, while walking to the Yeshiva, Rav Dovid remarked to his escorts: “Heint der Alter hut mir gekummen mevaker tzu zayn (The Alter came to visit me today)”. (The Talmidim instinctively assumed that one of the great Mashgiachim from the Lithuanian Yeshivos must have appeared to Rav Dovid in a dream.) “Fuhn Kelm? Udder fuhn Slabodka? (Was it the Alter of Kelm? Or the Alter of Slabodka?)”, one of the escorts asked. “Nayn, nayn” corrected Rav Dovid, “nit fuhn der sort Alter (not that type of Alter)”. “‘Der Alter' who visited me this morning was much older than both of those”, remarked Rav Dovid with a slight smile. “This ‘Alter', although referred to by our sages as an ‘old stupid king', can actually be quite cunning.” The talmidim henceforth understood that the “Alter” to which the Rosh Yeshiva was referring, was to none other than the Yetzer Hara himself!! Realizing that there was much to learn from this seemingly casual exchange, one of the Talmidim asked, “What did the Yetzer Hara think he could accomplish by visiting the Rosh Yeshiva in the predawn hours? Couldn't he have found a more suitable acquaintance to visit with??” “Lummer dir eppis masbir zayn - let me explain,” said the Rosh Yeshiva. “Today, the Yetzer Hara suggested that I stay in bed for just an additional five minutes, based on an extremely logical premise: the entire world is now enjoying a sound, uninterrupted sleep. Wouldn't it be appropriate to heed the dictum of Chazal: ׳אל תפרוש מן הציבור׳ - ‘Never detach yourself from the congregation'? He even reasoned that it would be improper to rise from bed, as that would constitute a violation of the aforementioned teaching of Chazal!!
