Welcome to our humility series. Today we are going to explore the contrast of arrogance and the proper outlook. We know we should not be arrogant, showy, boastful people who take credit for our accomplishments and feel that we're special. That is Gaava , which should not be confused with something called the Rommemut HaNefesh/an uplifted soul, a feeling of how special I am. I come from good stock. I have Tzelem Elokim, I'm not an animal. I'm a human being. I have a certain royalty to me. That's not a feeling of Ga'ava . What's the difference? Ga'ava is I'm better than somebody else. Like it says of Hashem, Ki Ga'oh Ga'ah /He is arrogant bove the arrogant. His kiseh kavod is above the most arrogant of the wild beasts- the lion, the domesticated cow, the eagle. They're the most arrogant and Hashem is above them all. That's the term of Ga'avah . But there's another term used of Hashem, /Hashem is the King that was uplifted alone from way back when. What does that mean? The Maharit, Rav Yosef of Trani and the Bet Aharon explain that this means that even before there was a world, where there was no one compare oneself to, Hashem was Ram . That's what we also have to be. I'm not great if I look at myself, where I come from and what my sources are and see that I'm royal. I'm not comparing myself to you. That's an inherent greatness and that is a prerequisite to having good Middot . Rav Yehezkiel Levenstein says that when a person has that feeling of Rommemut , he doesn't need to start looking down on others. He has an inherent greatness. He doesn't need to become great by pushing others down. The Elder of Kelm says that the force against the Jewish people is Amalek . What did Amalek do? We left Mitzrayim b'Yad Rama/with an outstretched hand, with Rommemut They were like a bubbling bath. They were on the top of the world. But along came Amalek, and like a person that jumps into the bubbling bath, cooled them down, didn't let them feel their Rommemut , or feel how special they were. Amalek wanted to take away the feeling of Beni Bechori Yisrael. That's what Amalek came to do. So how do we fight off Amalek? Says the Elder of Kelm, וכאשר ירים משה ידו, :Moshe Rabbenu lifted up his hands and כשישראל נושאים לבם לאביהם שבשמים, the Jewish people lifted up their hearts. He says this means שהתחזקו ברוממות נפשם they strengthened themselves in the exaltedness of their souls. And they looked and had they honor then V'gavar Yisrael. He adds that later Amalek was Haman, who also tried to break the Jewish people, להכניע רוממות הנפש מישראל, to break that exaltedness. But it didn't work. How did we fight back? Mordechai would not bend, he would not bow. We have to realize that this is not just about Amalek the person or Haman the person. Bereshit 6, 5 says וְכָל יֵצֶר מַחְשְׁבֹת לִבּוֹ רַק רַע כָּל הַיּוֹם: / The Yetzer of his heart said only bad all day . So simply it means that all day the Yetzer Hara is giving you bad ideas of what to do. The Nefesh HaChaim, in Shaar 3,Perek 8 says this means that the Yetzer Hara's trick is to say all day to you, You are no good. He wants to break you. He wants to make you feel shafal . And once he breaks you, you'll do anything. You need to have Rommemut HaNefesh. But part of his ploy is to make you think that being shafal/ being lowly is how you're supposed to feel. The Imrei Emet says something unbelievable about the words רק רע כל היום The last letter of רק is ק The last letter of רע is an ע . The last letter of כל is ל . The last letter of היום is מ , which spells עמלק Amalek. We all have an Amalek inside of us that wants to tell us all day, " You're no good. " But don't think that's Anava . It's Shiflut . And the Nefesh HaChaim in Shaar This is the Torah of the human being, to ant Jewish person, Don't say in your heart, Who am I? What's my strength? What's my power? What can I do? Who am I? " No, you have to realize, he says, and put steadfast in your heart. Every deed, every speech, every thought that you do every second of the day has impact. How great are your deeds! How powerful they are! Rabbi Ades once said, Imagine a man sitting in front of the control tower with all kind of buttons and levers, and that's the place where they hit the button to launch a nuclear attack. Will he sit there and they'll say, " Who am I? What am I? What can I do? " It's not about you, it's about what you connected to, where you're positioned. You're a Jewish person! Your soul came from beneath the Kiseh Hakavod. You're powerful. And this is throughout all our writings. Mesilat Yesharim chapter 19, when talking about praying for the Bet Hamikdash to be built, says, "if a person says, מִי אֲנִי וּמָה אֲנִי סָפוּן שֶׁאֶתְפַּלֵּל עַל יְרוּשָׁלַיִם What am I? What's my value? I'm going to pray for Yerushalayim? My prayers are going to cause the Galut to come and the Yeshua to happen? And he says, Yes. The answer is Man was created alone, because everyone has to say, בִּשְׁבִילִי נִבְרָא הָעוֹלָם" I am the only one to pray for the churban. I am important. I'm the only person in the world. We have to walk around with these feelings of Rommemut HaNefesh . The Sefer Kol Mevaser on Parashat Yitro quotes Rav Bunim of Peshishcha who said, Every Jew has to have two pockets . In one pocket, it should say, " בשבילי נברא העולם / For me the world was created And in the other pocket should say אנכי עפר ואפר , /I am but dust and ashes If you're getting a little too carried away, remind yourself I am but dust and ashes And if you're getting a little down, you have to take out the בשבילי נברא העולם / For me the world was created. It's a balance. You have to have both. So much so that Rav Hutner brings down in that in the Gemara in Masechet Rosh Hashana 26 B, there's a discussion of How the shofar of Rosh Hashanah is supposed to be. Should it be bent or should it be straight? One opinion says, כמה דכייף איניש דעתיה / the more you bend yourself in humility, the better it is And another opinion says, No כמה דפשיט It's better to be straight. What are these two approaches? Rav Hutner, in his sefer on Rosh Hashanah, Maamar 15 says that, yes, there's a concept of bending yourself. That's important. It's Rosh Hashanah. There's Kabalat Ohl Malchut Shamayim. accepting the yoke of God's kingdom. I am going to humble myself and bend myself. But that could be dangerous. We don't want you to feel like you're a piece of dirt. So the other side is, you have to stand up straight, stand with your head high and say, I belong to the army of Hashem. I'm a proud card-carrying Jew. That's not a contradiction to Anava . You can know who you are, know your family, know your roots, know your greatness. And at the same time, after all that, you say, but did I do it? It's a gift that Hashem gave me. It's the car that God gave me to drive. It's not my car, its all His gifts. It's the talents that God gave me. Anava doesn't mean walking around lowly. That's the Yetzer Hara talking to you. When you walk around feeling down and low and it's not allowing you to produce, then you know it's coming from that Rak Rah Kol HaYom. You have to see what it's producing, what it's causing. He wants to break us. And that's why we sometimes think that it's the Yetzer HaTov saying, " You have to be humble. You have to be xyz.." No. You are great. And there's nothing wrong with saying you're great. And there's nothing wrong with saying Bishvilli Nivrah Olam . There's nothing wrong with saying Banim Atem Hashem Elokechem I once asked one of the gedolim, Rav Berel Povarsky, what a healthy person that's feeling depressed should do. And he said, " What should you do? You say the Beracha Ohev Amo Yisrael- God loves you. You're part of the Jewish people. The Creator loves you." Those are the thoughts that a Jewish person has to have. Rav Haskel Levenstein says, the more Rommemut you have, the better your Middot will be, the less you'll be brought down, the less you'll be stuck over pettiness and silliness. Rav Ades says he was once on a plane, looking out the window at all the cars in the parking lot getting smaller and smaller and smaller. What happened? Who was shrinking all the cars? Of course, he was saying that in jest. The cars didn't get smaller, he said. I got higher. And when you lift yourself up, you see that all the things that are seemingly important, that people get busy with, are really small. You lift yourself up and the challenges disappear. Rav Yerucham Levovitz once said, " How many people have to go for therapy to get out the sandbox and stop playing in the sand? How many people have to go therapy to stop playing with their dolls? How'd you stop?" The answer is, You matured. You grew up, you became uplifted. It says in HaAzinu Devarim 32,2 thar the Torah is compared to a wind that blows through the grass, and just like the wind strengthens the grass and makes it grow, it lifts you up, it makes you greater, it makes you above. Now, someone might say, and again, the Yetzer Hara talking, "what do you mean? Ma Anu, We say every morning, what are we? Ma Hayinu/What's our life? Ma Hasdenu/What's our kindness? Ma Sidkatenu/What's our righteousness? Ma Yeshuatenu/What's our salvation? Ma Kohenu/What's our strength? And we go on..: and we say, It's hot air, man is nothing more than an animal… it sounds horrible, But you have to continue. Now we go into a whole different story We're Your nation the the children of Your convenant, of Avraham Yitzhak and Yaakov, that You love them and You're happy with them. And we're called the Yisrael Yeshurun, and therefore we have to be thankful and praise You and bless You, How lucky we are, how fortunate we are, We come to shul in the morning and we stay late at night and we say, Shema Yisrael.. what a positive switch. You can't get stuck in the What are we?Of course there is truth to that. What is our strength? And what is our abilities? But we have a Neshama, and that gives us Rommemut. These are the thoughts that we have to have. And they're not contrary to Anava.
Welcome to our series on humility. Yesterday we spoke about the concept of Rommemut HaNefesh/ an exalted uplifted soul . Today we'll continue with that topic, starting with a quote from Rabbenu Yonah in Shaare HaAvoda. It's worthwhile to read every word. He says, " The first opening of serving Hashem is that the person who's serving Hashem should know his value and realize his qualities, and the qualities of his forefathers; how great they were, how important they were, how dear they were to Hashem. And they should try and strengthen themselves constantly to keep themselves on that high level and to act on it constantly. And every day, continue to add strength to get even more qualities to connect to their Creator. It'll be slow at the beginning, but he will get even greater as time goes on." And then he says, " This will cause him that when he has a desire to do something negative or he becomes arrogant and wants to do something improper, he'll be embarrassed of himself and of his forefathers and he'll tell himself, 'Somebody great and important like me, with is so many wonderful qualities…I'm the children of the greats of kings of old, how can I do such a thing like this?'" And he quotes a term used by Yosef HaSadik, " איך אעשה הרעה הגדולה הזאת וחטאתי לאלקים /How could I do a sin like this and sin to God?" hinting to that's what saved Yosef. And the word that he uses in Hebrew is, I have qualities that are exalted… And he says the opposite: If heaven forbid, you don't realize your qualities and qualities of forefathers, very easily you're going to go in the ways of the Pritzim/people that breach the proper ways. He says The one that wants to serve Hashem has to constantly try to realize his qualities and the qualities of the Sadikim and Hasidim and how important and endearing they are to Hashem. He has to realize that he too can reach those levels of importance and endearment, as long as he serves Hashem the way they did and uses his time and abilities according to his strengths and talents . As the pasuk says in Devarim 30,14, כִּֽי־קָר֥וֹב אֵלֶ֛יךָ הַדָּבָ֖ר מְאֹ֑ד בְּפִ֥יךָ וּבִֽלְבָבְךָ֖ לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ / It's extremely close to you, in your mouth and your heart to do it which means Hashem is not asking you more than you can do. And our great forefathers Avraham Yitzhak and Yaakov served Him according to their abilities." Unbelievable words of hizuk from Rabbenu Yonah, That the first step towards serving Hashem is realizing your hashivut / importance . And again, that's not a contradiction to being humble. On the other hand, Rav Chaim Vital in his sefer Shaare. Kedusha , section 2 gate 4 says almost the same words in contrast, that being down on yourself is the gate of the beginning of the seduction of the Yetzer Harah. Even if you're a sadik, the Yetzer Hara will come to you as a pious man and say, 'How could you even entertain coming close to the Holy King of the world, you piece of dust, worms and maggots?' These attitudes come from the original snake that interacted with Adam and Chava. Last class we spoke about Amalek. Amalek is the evil force that tries to tell us, Rak Rah Kol HaYom/ You're only evil, all day . The pasuk in Yeshaya 14,29 says ךְ כִּֽי־מִשֹּׁ֤רֶשׁ נָחָשׁ֙ יֵ֣צֵא צֶ֔פַע וּפִרְי֖וֹ שָׂרָ֥ף מְעוֹפֵֽף׃ / From the root of the Nachash/snake will emerge a Sefa/viper. These are 2 different types of snakes. And our rabbis tell us that from the root of the snake (referring to the original snake, the sin of Adam HaRishon) will come out a viper- referring to Amalek. The Chida says in Nachal Eshkol , his commentary on Kohelet 10,11, that the numerical value of צפע is 90 + 80 + 70 = 240, the same numerical value as עמלק Amalek. Amalek is that continuation, the embodiment of the snake. And that's why just like in the future it says the snake will be wiped out, so too, Amalek will be wiped out. As we mentioned previously, the epitome of Amalek was Haman . And that's why the sefer Kehilat Yaakov, written by Rav Yaakov Tzvi Yalish (1777- 1825), one of the students of the Chozeh of Lublin tells us that Haman is Rasheh Tevot for ה וא מ שרש נ חש . He comes from the root of the snake. The opposite is Mordechai HaSadik. Haman was there to bring down the exaltedness of the Jewish people and Mordechai brought it up by not bowing. The snake is told, in Bereshit 3:15 וְאֵיבָ֣ה ׀ אָשִׁ֗ית בֵּֽינְךָ֙ וּבֵ֣ין הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה I will put hatred between you and the woman. The word איבה spells is א יש י הודי ה יה ב שושן. Wonder of wonders, that we have this concept clearly brought out that it goes back to the snake who started all our problems. The snake tried to introduce the false Rommemut/ arrogance into man and he continues his mission with Amalek, and with Haman. Let us again go a little deeper into our story: As the Jewish people are leaving Mitzrayim, they're going out ביד רמה with an uplifted hand, with Rommemut. Amalek can't stand that. Amalek can't swallow the fact that we're coming out with Rommemut . Amelek's numerical value 240 is רם as well. Every concept has a negative and positive. The Jewish people are the Rommemeut of Kedusha/ the holy aspect of exaltedness, whereas Amalek is the opposite. He's the contaminated aspect of exaltedness. He misuses this concept of Rommemeut . He's a fraud. He's Haman who makes it look like he's רם Ram/exalted , important. But it's fake, because he is dependent on the world to give him that importance. It's not inherent. He goes wild when he doesn't get his importance because he's not really internally great. He doesn't have internal qualities of greatness. The Elder of Kelm in Shemot , essay 253 tells us that true honor cannot be taken by anybody else. As it says in Mishleh 3,35 כָּ֭בוֹד חֲכָמִ֣ים יִנְחָ֑לוּ l The wise inherit honor. Because they have wisdom, they have inherent greatness. If a person is always complaining and in pain because they don't get outside recognition and constantly feel chased by others, that is a sign that other people own his honor and they can give it or take it away from him. But not the Chachamim . They have inherent honor and no one can take it away from them. Look what Haman ended up saying. When one person, Mordechai, doesn't bow down to him, he says, " כל זה איננו שוה לי This is all worthless to me ." Of course, he can't show it, as it says, VeYitapek Haman. Haman holds himself back. He controls himself, but he knows, inside of him, how much it hurt. The rabbis tell us, based on Gemara in Masechet Megila that Yaakov Avinu requested from Hashem, " Don't let Esav HaRasha get his will. " And that refers, it says to גרממיא של אדם If Hashem would not have held them back, they would have destroyed the whole world. Rav Yaakov Emden, hundreds of years before the Holocaust, says there's a mistake in the text- It shouldn't say גרממיא , it should say גרמניה , Germany . So the Gemara clearly says that Germany is this force that comes from Esav (as does Amelek) that could wipe out the world. The Germans mimic the fake concept of Rommemut as well. As we know, Hitler professed the Aryan race, his pseudoscientific superior race concept. Now that we have DNA and RNA, there's nothing to support this claim. It's what we called pseudoscience. But they believed that they were some special, superior specimen of humankind. They thought they were a master race and they believed that non-Aryans were racially inferior. The term that Hitler used was Untermentsch/subhuman, and he claimed they were an existential threat that had to be exterminated. That was the state ideology that led to the Holocaust. Blonde hair, blue eyes- a made-up, fake Rommemeut . There's nothing there. It's Pseudoscientific. Rav Wolbe writes in his sefer at the end of Parashat Beshalach where it talks about Amalek's attack, that the Jewish people have quality . That we have what's called Azut D'Kedusha. We have a strength of brazenness, of holiness. We don't give up. Like Mordechai, we aren't impacted by outside world opinion. That's why we're still here today. We're called Azin Sh'bUmot the most brazen of nations , and we wouldn't survive without that. But Amalek has the Azut of Tum'ah. As it says, Every nation is in trembling, they were all impacted by the event of Keriat Yam Suf. And who was the one that said, I'm going to be brazen I don't care… That was Amalek. He's not impacted. He doesn't change from anything around him, from anything outside of him. He continues to do what he wants to do. That's the ultimate evil. As long as Amalek is around, Hashem's throne is not complete. He is the antithesis of a Hashem. Shaul Hamelech was the first king to take on Amalek but he didn't do it. Why not? In Shmuel 1, perek 15:24, Shaul excuses himself and says חָטָ֔אתִי כִּֽי־עָבַ֥רְתִּי אֶת־פִּֽי־יְהֹוָ֖ה וְאֶת־דְּבָרֶ֑יךָ כִּ֤י יָרֵ֙אתִי֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וָאֶשְׁמַ֖ע בְּקוֹלָֽם׃ I sinned. I didn't listen to Hashem and to you. Because I was afraid of the people. You were afraid of the people? That's a lack of Azut D'Kedusha. You can't take on Amalek, the Azut of Tum'ah unless you possess Azut D'Kedusha. Lastly, we said there's difference between Ga'ava , which means you think you're great because you're above somebody, and Rommemut , which is inherent exaltedness. We say Romemtanu Mikol Leshonot/God lift us up/exalted us, above all other tongues. But why do we have to be above all other tongues? It should be inherent, shouldn't it? And the answer is, it is inherent. We are greater than all other tongues doesn't mean that we're just greater than all the nations. It means our language is greater, not by comparison, but it's inherently greater. The building blocks of creation were the 22 letters of the Alef Bet. Just like we have a periodical table elements, we have the 22 letters. They call water H2O, two hydrogen and one oxygen. But if you could look with spiritual glasses, you would see water is מים . Mem Yud Mem. That's the spiritual makeup of water, and that's why it's called the Mayim . When you call it water or agua or any other name, it's just a made up word to refer to it. It's not the inherent essence of the word. So the only language that is inherently exalted, because it's talking about the thing itself, is Lashon Hakodesh . That's why we're not just being arrogant about our language, like, " My language is more poetic than yours ." Or, " My language is richer than yours." No, it's inherently exalted. It's Rommamtanu M'kol Leshonot. This concludes our lesson on the contrast between exaltedness and arrogance.

On our quest to acquire perfect emunah and think correctly, we want to purify our minds with the right hashkafa according to the Torah. The pasuk in parashat Ekev warns, if a person becomes well-to-do, he will forget about Hashem, saying, it is my might and strength that made me this wealth. The Saba from Kelm points out, the Torah does not say, maybe he will say this, because the nature of a person is to automatically think that way. It is only with proper training that we can uproot this thought process. If we see a successful businessman, what are our thoughts about his wealth? Do we think about what appear to be the immediate causes that brought him his wealth, like the product he sells or the stocks he bought? Or do we think that Hashem wanted him to be wealthy and He gave him his wealth? If we see an army successful in battle, do we think about their great strategies and war tactics? Or do we attribute their success to HaKadosh Baruch Hu? This is one way in which we could test our level of emunah, seeing if our initial thoughts have adapted to the way that Hashem wants us to think. The Gemara says in Masechet Berachot that Rav Huna had four hundred barrels of wine that soured, and when the Rabbis heard about it, they immediately told him to check into his deeds. Rav Huna asked the Rabbis why they suspected him of doing something wrong, and they replied, because without a question it was Hashem who made the wine sour, and it was a kapara for something that the Rabbi did wrong. Rav Huna looked into his deeds and indeed discovered his error in a different business dealing, and right after he made teshuvah , the issue of the wine went away. The baalei mussar point out from here, usually the way it works is when someone experiences some type of misfortune like this, he thinks about all the different natural causes of why the wine may have spoiled, but Chazal are teaching us with their pure emunah that the natural causes don't matter. Everything that takes place is because of Hashem. If we fix what Hashem wants us to fix, then the issue goes away. The Apta Rav used to say, the way of the world is when someone makes a certain hishtadlut and it doesn't work out the way he hoped, he thinks, “If only I would have done things differently, then I might have gotten what I wanted.” If the person said something he wishes he didn't say, he would think, “If only I would have said something else, then I would have gotten what I wanted.” Both of those reactions are incorrect. The outcome that took place was exactly the outcome that Hashem wanted to take place. And if the outcome could have been different because of different words or a different hishtadlut , then Hashem would have put those thoughts in the person's brain at the time he was making the hishtadlut . It is extremely difficult for someone to put in a lot of effort into something and then believe that the result had nothing to do with his efforts. But this is the way Hashem wants us to think, because this is the absolute truth. This is the way He runs the world. Even if someone says, “I did it and Hashem helped me do it,” that is tarnished emunah. אין עוד מלבדו , there is nothing other than Hashem. He doesn't need our help. He wants us to put in our efforts for various reasons. One of them is to test us in this very area, to see if we'll believe it was Him, even though we had to put in the effort. The more we train ourselves to think this way, the better we'll get at it. And b'ezrat Hashem, we will train ourselves to the point where our initial thoughts are with pure emunah.

Yahrtzeit Yomi #1059!! (1890 - 1924) ON HIS 100TH YAHRTZEIT!! ---------------------------------------------------- A little more than a century ago, 17-year-old Avrohom Eliyahu Kaplan composed an all-time classic poem titled Shakah Chamah, a ballad of mussar that speaks to the futility of life. For many years, the poor, lonely, and sick have found company in these meaningful lyrics. In truth, this young tzaddik faced personal challenges, beginning even before his birth: Avrohom Eliyahu was named after his father, who was known as the Rakover Iluy and who died a few months before he was born. Avrohom Eliyahu, a passionate and fiery young man, first attended the Talmud Torah of Kelm. After a short while, he moved on to the Slabodka Yeshiva, where he learned with great hasmadah, under the tutelage of the famed Alter of Slabodka, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel. Waging battle against the forces of secular Zionism and Haskalah from the time that he was a young bachur. Avrohom Eliyahu utilized his unique talents to write fearless essays and enthralling poems in the areas of Torah, Mussar, and Yiras Shamayim. A talented musician, he composed a number of mesmerizing songs, as well. One incredible story personifies his gadlus. Rav Avrohom Eliyahu was present at the Sheva Berachos of a Slabodka talmid, Rav Aharon Kotler, who married Chana Perel Meltzer, the daughter of the great Rav Isser Zalman. In honor of the celebration, Rav Aharon delivered a two-hour shtickel Torah. After he finished, Rav Avrohom Eliyahu stood up and promptly repeated the entire shtickel… in grammen form! When, years later, an incredulous talmid shared this story with Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Ruderman, rosh yeshivah of Ner Israel, he responded that it is certainly possible, as such was the brilliance of Rav Avrohom Eliyahu. Rebbetzin Ruderman, the daughter of Rav Sheftel Kramer and first cousin of Rebbetzin Kotler, overheard the conversation and shared a postscript. “Not only is it possible that it happened, but I was there! And Rav Isser Zalman's son played the violin as Rav Avrohom Eliyahu sang the grammen.” Although Slabodka emphasized gadlus ha'adam, the greatness of man, Avrohom Eliyahu composed the words to Shakah Chamah with an altogether different mindset. Drawing forth from the sobering teachings of RavYisrael Salanter, the father of the mussar movement, the lyrics portray a tormented young man infused with yiras Shamayim, who tries to wage war against the relentless efforts of the yetzer hara, yet finds his neshamah, his soul, sinking into the emptiness and darkness of the abyss. ...(for remainder of tribute see WhatsApp group) --------------------------------------------------- Share the Yahrtzeit Yomi link with your contacts!! https://chat.whatsapp.com/JimbwNtBaX31vmRDdnO3yk --------------------------------------------------- To dedicate or sponsor, please contact 917-841-5059, or email yahrtzeityomidaily@gmail.com. The Farm and Industry Short Course has wrapped up its first year in its new home at UW-River Falls. The overall sentiment from Professor Steve Kelm is that it was a success, and it all started with the diversity of courses they offered. Yahrtzeit Yomi #949!! (1902 - 1999) Special 25th Yahrtzeit Edition!! ---------------------------------------------- Today, Thursday, 6 Adar, marks the 25th Yahrtzeit of Rav (Yehoshua) Dovid Povarsky ZTL, Rosh Yeshiva of the Ponovezh Yeshiva in Bnei Brak. In his youth, Rav Dovid was a close talmid of Rav Aaron Kotler ZTL in the Slutzk Yeshiva, and later joined the Mirrer Yeshiva where he developed his lifelong connection to the Mashgiach, Rav Yerucham Levovitz ZTL. After World War I, he married and moved to Baranovitch where he became a chavrusa of the Rosh Yeshiva, Rav Elchonon Wasserman ZTL. Rav Dovid's reputation spread, and he received an invitation to join the staff of the noted Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, which he ultimately declined, preferring instead to continue learning and teaching in Baranovitch. For more than half a century, Rav Dovid served as Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivas Ponovezh in Bnei Brak, where he taught and guided thousands of worthy disciples, who staunchly continue the legacy of the venerated Rosh Yeshiva until today. For several decades, Rav Dovid's daily routine was to awaken at 3 AM, and to walk from his home in Bnei Brak to the nearby Ponovezh Yeshiva, where he would learn Torah until Shacharis. Nothing would impede him from this regimen; neither inclement weather, nor declining health. Like a disciplined soldier in the royal guard, Rav Dovid maintained his post, studying assiduously for a four-hour, uninterrupted stretch, come what may. In his later years, after he had slipped and fallen twice, his family, concerned for his safety, arranged for two of his closest Talmidim to escort him daily. Once, during a very stormy, windy night, while walking to the Yeshiva, Rav Dovid remarked to his escorts: “Heint der Alter hut mir gekummen mevaker tzu zayn (The Alter came to visit me today)”. (The Talmidim instinctively assumed that one of the great Mashgiachim from the Lithuanian Yeshivos must have appeared to Rav Dovid in a dream.) “Fuhn Kelm? Udder fuhn Slabodka? (Was it the Alter of Kelm? Or the Alter of Slabodka?)”, one of the escorts asked. “Nayn, nayn” corrected Rav Dovid, “nit fuhn der sort Alter (not that type of Alter)”. “‘Der Alter' who visited me this morning was much older than both of those”, remarked Rav Dovid with a slight smile. “This ‘Alter', although referred to by our sages as an ‘old stupid king', can actually be quite cunning.” The talmidim henceforth understood that the “Alter” to which the Rosh Yeshiva was referring, was to none other than the Yetzer Hara himself!! Realizing that there was much to learn from this seemingly casual exchange, one of the Talmidim asked, “What did the Yetzer Hara think he could accomplish by visiting the Rosh Yeshiva in the predawn hours? Couldn't he have found a more suitable acquaintance to visit with??” “Lummer dir eppis masbir zayn - let me explain,” said the Rosh Yeshiva. “Today, the Yetzer Hara suggested that I stay in bed for just an additional five minutes, based on an extremely logical premise: the entire world is now enjoying a sound, uninterrupted sleep. Wouldn't it be appropriate to heed the dictum of Chazal: ׳אל תפרוש מן הציבור׳ - ‘Never detach yourself from the congregation'? He even reasoned that it would be improper to rise from bed, as that would constitute a violation of the aforementioned teaching of Chazal!! Recording Available Via Telephone Dial: (605) 475-4799 | Access ID: 840886# | Reference #: 585 In this week's parashah, Parashat Matot, Hashem commands Beneh Yisrael to wage war against, and annihilate, the nation of Midyan. We read that the men who went out to war killed the men of Midyan, but brought back the women as captives. The Torah then relates, ויקצף משה על פקודי החיל - Moshe was angry at the generals for this mistake. Rashi comments that since Moshe became angry, Hashem caused him to forget the halachot regarding the process of koshering the utensils which were brought from Midyan. The Saba of Kelm notes that Moshe's motives were purely לשם שמיים . Hashem had told him that he would die after the war was complete, and when Moshe saw that the job was not completed, he should have felt relieved and rejoiced, as his life was prolonged. Instead, he was troubled by the fact that Hashem's will was not fulfilled. And yet, despite his sincere intentions, he was punished. We learn from here Hashem never wants us to become angry, even when it comes to things which really matter, such as fulfilling His will. Let us imagine a person sitting in a study hall trying to learn Torah, and some people next to him are loudly chattering about idle matters. After twenty minutes of unsuccessfully trying to concentrate, the man is furious and shouts, "Can't you see I am trying to learn? Go talk somewhere else!" This man means well, and he sincerely desires to fulfill Hashem's will. But he fails to realize that Hashem's will is for him to control his temper and speak calmly and courteously. The Shomer Emunim tells the story of a certain Torah sage who asked his shamosh (personal assistant) to wake him very early the next morning, as he had a very important mitzvah to attend to. The shamosh overslept, and this Rabbi was unable to perform this vital mitzvah . Nevertheless, he remained perfectly calm, and did not become angry at the shamosh . He remarked afterward, "It could very well be that my ensuring not to get angry at the shamosh accomplished far more for me and gave Hashem greater satisfaction than that mitzvah would have." In our lives, too, it often happens that we set out to do something good but obstacles get in our way and do not allow us to achieve our goals. We need to realize that these obstacles are sent by Hashem to test us. If we react angrily and yell at people when we confront these obstacles, then we need to remind ourselves that we can accomplish more by overcoming our anger than we would have by performing the mitzvah which we were ultimately unable to perform. And if we are expected to remain calm when we are prevented from performing a mitzvah , then certainly we must restrain our anger when things go wrong in our mundane, worldly undertakings. If an order was not shipped, or if a worker did not do his job properly, then while giving constructive criticism is a reasonable form of hishtadlut (effort), anger and shouting reflects a lack of emunah . Every mishap is the will of Hashem, and it could be that the entire reason why the order was not shipped was to test the person and determine whether or not he will remain calm. If he is meant to earn that profit, then he will earn it through some other means. We must always maintain our composure, and understand that Hashem is in full control. Each time we are tested in this way - which could happen numerous times over the course of a single workday - and we restrain our anger and remain calm, we accomplish something very significant: we enhance our emunah , refine our characters, and bring great satisfaction to Hashem.

Have you ever considered how far people will go to escape obligations, even when it comes to serving God? In this eye-opening episode, we unpack Rashi's insight that the complaint in the Parshah of Baaloscha wasn't a complaint but more of an excuse to cause chaos and upheaval. We discuss fascinating stories like the blood libel and the fire in Kelm, demonstrating how individuals can wield a complaint to fulfill their desires, often without even realizing it.But what drives us to seek these excuses? We dive deep into our subconscious motives and how they can lead us to act in ways that don't align with our true intentions. For instance, we examine a movement promoting acceptance of perverse cultures under the guise of peace, love, and happiness, while in reality, it's a plot to cover up sin. Join us as we discuss valuable insights on better understanding our actions and motives, ensuring we pursue good things with genuinely good intentions.Support the show-------------------The Weekly Parsha is a Torah Podcast that focuses on thought-provoking and energizing Divrei Torah on the week's Parsha. #094 - Caroline Kelm coped with sleep issues, felt shaky all the time, was getting easily winded and lightheaded. Her symptoms were making it harder and harder to live her life, run her company, and take care of her family. After the birth of her second child, she had to leave her job and ended up on mattress island. And while she had dabbled in Medical Medium's work before that, after she received a POTS diagnosis, she fully committed and her health rebounded from there. Caroline was – and still is – extremely sensitive to supplements, so we talk through how she handled that. She also had a lot of ups and downs as she was healing, so we dig into that as well and talk about what she did to pull herself through.
