Je reçois aujourd'hui Lorraine Margherita, consultante collaborative, membre de Sociocracy For All et  autrice du livre Shared Decision Making in the Corporate Arena. People in the US spend more than 10% of their disposable income on food each year. About a trillion dollars of this spending goes toward purchasing food to eat at home, much of it spent at grocery stores and supermarkets. Yet, very few people understand or know about how food makes it to this last step of the food supply chain and ends up on the shelves of their local store.  In this book talk, Benjamin Lorr, author of “The Secret Life of Groceries: The Dark Miracle of the American Supermarket,” traces the history and evolution of the modern-day supermarket, exposes the grocery supply chain, and reveals the often exploited and underpaid labor that goes into making sure shelves are stocked. Speaking with Food & Society Director Corby Kummer, Lorr paints a vivid picture of how agricultural and meat processing workers, fisherman, truck drivers, and grocery store workers, among others, often endure poverty and sometimes worse as they work to feed our country. Maureen Conway, vice president at the Aspen Institute and executive director of the Economic Opportunities Program, provides opening remarks. This conversation took place on June 21, 2024. It is the third and final event in our series, “The Hands that Feed Us: Job Quality Challenges in the US Food Supply Chain,” in which we explore the challenges food workers face and opportunities to create a sustainable food system where workers, businesses, and consumers can thrive together. This episode of the New Books in Economic and Business History is an interview with New York writer Benjamin Lorr. Benjamin Lorr is the author of Hell-Bent: Obsession, Pain, and the Search for Something Like Transcendence in Competitive Yoga, a book that explores the Bikram Yoga community and movement. His second book, The Secret Life of Groceries: The Dark Miracle of the American Supermarket is "an extraordinary investigation into the human lives at the heart of the American grocery store. The miracle of the supermarket has never been more apparent. Like the doctors and nurses who care for the sick, suddenly the men and women who stock our shelves and operate our warehouses are understood as ‘essential' workers, providing a quality of life we all too easily take for granted. But the sad truth is that the grocery industry has been failing these workers for decades. In this page-turning expose, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on the highly secretive grocery industry. Combining deep sourcing, immersive reporting, and sharp, often laugh-out-loud prose, Lorr leads a wild investigation, asking what does it take to run a supermarket? How does our food get on the shelves? And who suffers for our increasing demands for convenience and efficiency? In this journey: We learn the secrets of Trader Joe's success from Trader Joe himself Drive with truckers caught in a job they call "sharecropping on wheels" Break into industrial farms with activists to learn what it takes for a product to earn certification labels like "fair trade" and "free range" Follow entrepreneurs as they fight for shelf space, learning essential tips, tricks, and traps for any new food business Journey with migrants to examine shocking forced labor practices through their eyes The product of five years of research and hundreds of interviews across every level of the business, The Secret Life of Groceries is essential reading for those who want to understand our food system--delivering powerful social commentary on the inherently American quest for more and compassionate insight into the lives that provide it. Yepper, I went under the "pin" and was relaxed and ready to talk with the soft-spoken beautiful soul who is James Lorr, local acupunk. I am delighted to share James' Journey to Joy through the healing tool of Acupuncture.  No pins required, you don't wanna miss :) James trained in New York City and Shanghai and has been practicing acupuncture for over 23 years. After securing his degree in Chemical Engineering from the UofI, he drifted into the restaurant world of serving, management, and ownership to find more fulfillment. However, the long stressful hours took their toll. James found himself drained and trying new things, including acupuncture. His energy and outlook changed radically! His body and mind were healed. He took a course in acupressure, went to school, then started practicing. He found a wider calling for management, ownership, and service through acupuncture. James is now on a mission to help us weary humans rest and recover our health, beginning with his community of CU. Check out his sliding scale of services at https://www.urbana-acu.com/. What are Through The Looking Glass Conversations? Convos with different teachers who have new tools for us to know and heal and understand ourselves better. That tool could be yoga or astrology or the enneagram. Just like you grew up and figured out how you thrived and learned - whether that be in a classroom environment, scraping your knees climbing trees in the woods, or belting out  cheers on the cheerleading squad, I bring you different tools, mirrors to see yourself,  so you can find ways to best learn and see your power and beauty and joy.Are you ready to Learn the 5 Steps of Self-Leadership that will help you peel back the layers and Lead you to Joy, on your own terms?

There are plenty of things we take for granted about walking into a grocery store: the fluorescent lights, the astoundingly inexpensive milk, the neatly stacked boxes of Nabisco cookies. But as Benjamin Lorr uncovers in his book The Secret Life of Groceries, there's more than meets the eye. Lorr went undercover as a Whole Foods fishmonger, boarded a shrimp-fishing boat in Thailand, and rode along with a truck driver in a quest to understand some of the unseen economics and labor that fuel our everyday commodities. In this episode, we talk about supply chain disruptions, neighborhood grocery tastemakers, and the origins of Trader Joe's.Also on the show, Anna sits down with author and journalist Leah Koenig to discuss the burgeoning world of TikTok and Instagram foraging.Additional reading:It Was a Big Year for TikTok Foraging [TASTE]Benjamin Lorr's ‘The Secret Life of Groceries' Book Being Adapted As TV Docuseries [Deadline]Buy the book: The Secret Life of Groceries
