In This Podcast: Greg interviews Michael Olson, a returning guest and influential figure in the food system. Michael shares his background as a Montana farm boy, Vietnam veteran, and author of Metro Farm. Then they jump into Michael's 'Three Laws of the Food Chain,' which include: 1) Agriculture is the foundation upon which we build all our sandcastles, 2) The farther we go from the source of our food, the less control we have over what's in our food, and 3) Cheap food isn't cheap. They discuss the evolution of local food movements, the impact of farmer's markets, and the importance of understanding where our food comes from. Michael emphasizes the value of local, nutrient-rich foods and the historical precedent for sustainable, small-scale farming seen in Asian cultures. The episode concludes with a call to action for consumers to seek out food with its farmer's face on it, underscoring the profound impact of food on human well-being.Our Guest: Michael Olson is a Montana farm boy and Vietnam veteran with a University of California degree in English & Chinese Literature. Though it certainly wouldn't go down as the biggest acquisition, totally overlooking last week's PROMIX Nutrition deal will prove detrimental for any founder building within the supplement industry. In 2011, Albert Matheny founded PROMIX after being unable to find products that matched his standards for ingredient quality, science-backed performance, and product safety. PROMIX lives by the simple mantra “no artificial anything.” To control the product (and ingredient) quality, PROMIX develops its formulas in-house, controls its own supply chain (with 94% of ingredients sourced from North America), and independent lab testing on finished products is available transparently online. Moreover, PROMIX made a packaging update several years ago that eliminated 97% of the plastic…becoming one of the earliest supplement brands to pioneer paperboard packaging. And that bold strategic narrative of “simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication” was a fundamental reason why PROMIX was just acquired. But if you haven't noticed over the last probably year, there have been A LOT of Big CPG portfolio architecture shifts. And these actions have mostly centered around deploying a “growth by subtraction” M&A strategic approach that seeks to create a more streamlined, focused company. But for those Big CPG portfolios that already had clarity on “competitive strengths,” you are seeing prioritization of acquisitions that can (1) fit focused parameters but (2) move the needle from a revenue perspective. And if we're talking Big CPG…that means “deal size” preference recently have been billion dollars (or more). So, with Big CPG currently M&A “whale hunting,” why would Paine Schwartz (the largest private equity firm dedicated to sustainable food chain investing) acquire a “smaller supplement brand?” Over the last decade, the performance nutrition segment of the supplement industry has undergone an enormous shift in marketplace dynamics. Imagine this huge pot that's melding together macro shifts in demand drivers and trending supplement industry dimensions like format/occasion expansion, brand strategy, consumer segmentation, and/or ingredients/benefits. The result has been this overall mainstreaming effect that disseminated the supplement subcategories across the entire retail landscape. Yet, it's that intense market expansion that has caused chaos...and opportunities for those that can put together this new puzzle. After Big CPG streamlines (and focuses) their portfolios around competitive strengths, the next logical step should be towards investing in smaller growth brands that have strategic alignment. Though this won't happen overnight, even if mega nutrition trends like “Age of Ozempic,” the protein-ification of grocery, “Make America Healthy Again,” and gut wellness…are driving Big CPG crazy modeling out every strategic if/then gameplan right now. But that's fine if you're Paine Schwartz…because selecting PROMIX means the private equity firm already built conviction around “what/who they believe will win” within that shifting marketplace. Paine Schwartz sees PROMIX as that important puzzle piece. And now it must prioritize deliberate depth over breadth actions that create an even more distinct strategic narrative to fully take advantage of this opportunity…which is a lesson any founder building within the supplement industry should apply to their own business. Kevin Hart's vegan fast food chain, Hart House, has abruptly shut down all four of its California locations after just two years in business. Despite initial success and expansion plans, the combination of niche market appeal, California's rising minimum wage to $20 an hour, and high operational costs likely led to the closures. Vegan restaurants often face narrow margins, and in an already tough state for business, these factors proved fatal for Hart's venture. California's leftist-driven wage hikes have been heavily criticized by conservatives, and Hart's restaurant appears to be another casualty of this economic environment. The closure is emblematic of broader issues in California, where high costs, overregulation, and unsustainable wage increases are driving small businesses out. Kevin Hart may have learned the hard way that celebrity status doesn't guarantee success in the restaurant industry, especially with a vegan concept in a high-cost state like California.

Nina Planck tells us about doing farmers markets as a kid growing up on Wheatland Vegetable Farms in Northern Virginia in the 70s and 80s, and how that experience led to her starting a series of farmers markets in London, England. We talk about how growers can optimize their own farmers markets, emphasizing the need for them to expand their offerings beyond fruits and vegetables to include meat, dairy, seafood, wine, and anything else produced locally. We also talk about how ideas and recipes from some of Nina's books, including The Farmer's Market Cookbook and The Real Food Cookbook, can help market shoppers who are not used to cooking with whole foods break out of the routine of using processed foods. Zooming out, we discuss the impact of agricultural subsidies on the food system, and talk about how to re-make the industrial food chain with local foods values. This is a bonus episode from The Global Story asking - Are ultra-processed foods impossible to avoid?Research into ultra-processed foods suggests they could be linked to health problems including cancers, heart disease, obesity and depression - but scientists are yet to agree on how they actually affect us. Often mass-produced, and containing multiple additives, UPFs have become the target of nutritionists and clean-living advocates alike. But, given how common they are, can we realistically avoid them? On this episode, Lucy Hockings speaks with BBC health reporter Philippa Roxby, and Ruth Alexander, presenter of The Food Chain podcast from the BBC World Service. Together, they unpack what we really know about UPFs. Lots of food talk this week as Amy and Matt discuss the Adventure Time episodes, "Food Chain" and "Furniture & Meat"! Also, lots of awesome listener feedback. For Amy's episode predictions, we present... Caroline's Handy Dandy Grading Rubric: -Does the prediction contain the same characters as the actual episode? -If I worked at A.T. corp. would I produce this episode idea? -How much creative effort was put forth while coming up w/ this prediction? -Do the prediction and the actual ep. follow the same archetype (i.e. love & loss, heroic adventure, self-discovery, etc.)? -Would this story aide in the development of the overall plot and/or character development? -Do the events of the story seem plausible in regard to character traits (i.e. It would not be plausible for Finn to do something evil)? -Does a similar story line occur at some later point in the show? -Has a similar story line already occurred in a previously reviewed episode?
