El Vez, known for decades as “The Mexican Elvis” is a rockstar, cultural phenomenon and the alter ego of early West Coast punk rock icon Robert Lopez of The Zeros and later, Catholic Discipline. But that's not even close where it stops. He's not just a singer and songwriter, he wrote his own chapter in John Doe and Tom Desavia's “Under The Big Black Sun”. He's also an artistc workaholic with multiple projects going at once. He fronts The Little Richards, recently did a tribute show covering the songs of LA punk icons The Screamers, and is touring Spain with Los Straightjackets. In this episode, Robert and lifelong pal hostess Pleasant Gehman chat about the gloomy storytelling show he created, “The Unhappy Hour” featuring his dark humor and dirge-like renditions of 70's pop hits. There may be no singular figure in rock who has aged more gracefully than Nick Lowe. This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Convincer – perhaps the quintessential example of the singer-songwriter settling into a comfortable new role as a rock elder statesman. But while the artist notes that he's happily left the Chuck Berry-esque rock and roll stage antics in his past, two decades later, he finds himself reimagining his catalog with luchador mask-wearing instrumental rock band, Los Straightjackets. You can leave the rock and roll behind – but if you're lucky, the rock and roll never leaves you. Half a century after a brush with fame as the front man of pub rock group, Brinsley Schwarz, Lowe has continued to thrive. From serving as the in-house producer for Stiff records, to breaking through with like "Cruel to Be Kind" and "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass,” to penning classics covered by Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash and Dave Edmunds, he's endured as one of great songwriters of his – or any – generation.

Sights & Sounds is your weekly guide to the Bay Area arts scene through the eyes and ears of local artists. Los Straightjackets at The Ivy Room, Thursday night at 8 p.m. Hot Lunch 13th anniversary show at Bottom of the Hill, Friday night at 8:30 p.m. The Whateverglades at The Golden Bull, Saturday night at 8pm Los Straightjackets are known for their energetic performances while clad in Mexican wrestler masks and black suits. They’ve been featured on Conan O’Brien’s show. The band is loved for their great guitar instrumentals and they’ll be bringing that energy to the Ivy Room in Albany on Thursday night. Hot Lunch is a long running local favorite band. Their aggressive, Punk-n-Roll music will be driving some moshing and slam dancing as they celebrate their 13th anniversary on Friday--which is also Friday the 13th! If you
Nick Lowe gives Kyle Meredith the rundown on his latest EP and tour with Los Straightjackets. He shares the story behind "Love Starvation" and "Trombone" and how far back in his musical past he'll look for inspiration. The two also discuss recording Labour of Lust and Dave Edmunds' Repeat When Necessary at the same time, the lasting impact of Rockpile, and the 30th anniversary of his comeback album, The Impossible Bird. Lowe also tells us of a biography that's due out in the fall and plans for the next EP. For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy
Episode 93: In the 1970s Nick Lowe carved out a place on the thoughtful side of punk and pop in England, landing "Cruel To Be Kind" on the charts with his band Rockpile but doing so much more besides. He produced Elvis Costello's first five albums and wrote the anthem "What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding?" In the late 90s, he reinvented himself, with a new focus on his mellifluous voice, starting a run of songwriting that's up there with anybody's. And it was all rooted in a passion for American roots, from Tin Pan Alley to country to rock and roll. Lowe has recently released another EP in a stretch of work with the band Los Straightjackets. Also this hour, the emotionally charged and luxurious roots pop of Dylan LeBlanc.
You may know Ben Vaughn as a producer of artists such as Los Straightjackets, Charlie Feathers, Ween, or the one-off collaboration between Big Star’s Alex Chilton and Suicide’s Alan Vega, which he talks about in the episode of Berklee Online’s Music Is My Life podcast. Ben Vaughn got his start as the leader of a group called the Ben Vaughn Combo in the 1980s, and got a lot of attention from mainstream press, and inspired favorable cover versions of his tunes by the likes of Marshall Crenshaw, the Plimsouls, Man or Astroman, and more. His big break in the music industry came when he moved out to LA and quickly got a job as a composer for the show “Third Rock from the Sun,” which he composed the theme for. Success on that show led to a gig in the same role on “That 70s Show,” and numerous other shows. He has now comfortably resumed a solo career, and he also hosts a radio show on WXPN in Philly.

Mucha Lucha! This week Kyle and Matthew sit down with graphic design/tattoo artist J. Gonzo (http://jgonzodesigns.com/) and author Keith Rainville (frompartsunknown.com) to talk about the art of Mexican wrestling: Lucha Libre. First, Gonzo talks tattoos, his history of giving them, and the scary ways to get 'em. Turns out Kyle has a lot of friends with prison tattoos, which should surprise no one. Natalie also gets upset because Gonzo has offered to give Kyle his long sought after “Slow Ride” tattoo. But that is a story for another day. The boys get down to business and discuss the history and cultural significance of Lucha Libre wrestling. They talk about how Nacho Libre was many Americans' first exposure to Lucha culture. Gonzo defends the film for all its flaws and points out a few ways that the film could have gone from third-tier Jack Black movie to legit love letter to Lucha wrestling. Speaking of movies, Kyle picks Keith's brain about the history of Luchadores on film. For those who don't know, Luchador films are an amazingly weird genre where you can watch a man in a mask fight guys dressed like Dracula. Believe it or not, that's something Kyle is SUPER into. Burnside, as the host most well versed in wrestling, works to understand the differences between American and Luchador wrestling. Gonzo and Keith also explain how the styles diverged and evolved over time and how Luchadore wrestling plays into the identity of Mexican culture. Keith talks about his history with Lucha Libre and the Lucha zines he published throughout the '90s. They talk about '90s zine culture and how zines about specific subcultures found their way around the world in a time before the internet. Both Gonzo and Keith's lives and careers have been massively affected by Lucha culture, and they share some experiences from their own lives that are pretty incredible. Get ready for some high flying moves, mysterious characters, and masked men punching werewolves in the face. This episode has everything! Viva! Weekly Rads: White Reaper, Prey, Cowboy Bebop Raddendums: Love and Rockets, Latino Comics Expo, Lucha Mexico, Tales of Masked Men, Santo vs. the Vampire Women, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, Champions of Justice, Nacho Libre, Lucha Lucha, Sonámbulos, Lucha Underground, Fantastic Planet, Los Straightjackets
