In this episode, we are joined by Michael Thomas to talk about Black aesthetics and hip hop in particular. We work through what it means for hip hop to be a 'problem space' that reconstructs the cultural contradictions and political messaging of a racist society in a way that is not essentializing and that aspires to address social problems without producing easy answers. Main themes include hip hop's form, vibe, and story-telling capacity across generations.leftofphilosophy.com | @leftofphilReferences:Michael Thomas, "Singing Experience in Section.80", in Kendrick Lamar and the Making of Black Meaning, eds. Plus, he shares memories of seeing Diana Ross as a child, details performing Replacements covers in the school talent show, and attempts to dig into the origins of his daughter's love of Smash Mouth. Plus, Pete shares some stories from his touring life as a new father, his experiences at the legendary Los Angeles venue Largo, working with Scarlett Johansson, and an unfortunate incident involving smoked pumpkin seeds. Singer/songwriter Pete Yorn knows how to pick collaborators — he's worked with The Pixies' Frank Black, Scarlett Johansson, and REM's Peter Buck to name just a few greats. When he and Day Wave's Jackson Phillips began making music together, Yorn knew he'd found the right co-pilot for a new musical undertaking. To celebrate Yorn's new LP Caretakers, co-produced by him and Phillips, the two sat down for a deep dive on the Talkhouse Podcast. They examine the benefits and drawbacks of a musical education; discuss the pluses and minuses of working in both small and big recording studio; and take in how hearing The Cure & The Smiths changed the course of Yorn's life. Check it out, and subscribe to the Talkhouse Podcast to catch upcoming episodes featuring Portugal. The Man with SNL's Chris Redd and Fred Armisen, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) with Battles' Ian Williams, and CHAI in convo with Varsity. Today’s show was recorded in New York by Dan Arnes and Mark Yoshizumi. It was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast’s theme song was composed and performed by The Range.
Pete Yorn calls up Kyle Meredith to discuss his two new songs, "Calm Down" and "Can't Stop You", and how they lead into his new album, Caretakers. He talks a little about how the album was recorded and co-written with Jackson Phillips of Day Wave. Elsewhere, he explains why he's drawn to collaborations with folks like Scarlett Johansson, Liz Phair, and The Olms; his 20th anniversary working in the business; and how Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue has had an influence on his own touring. Happy Belated New Year. I have been really busy lately so haven't had much time for this, but have been slowly amassing songs for this mix. It was a little slow-going, but this works for me. This edition includes a bunch of new tracks from 2015 and also a few I missed last year that I found on the Pitchfork 100 best tracks. Most of those were really not that great, and none of the tracks from my end-of-year mix are in their list. I am happy about that. I like blazing my own trail here. Admittedly I haven't even listened to all 100 tracks they recommended, but I did grab a few I fell in love with. Like Taylor Swift. I hadn't actually given her a real listen. My family is making fun of me like crazy now because Out of the Woods is on repeat. Even my 9 year old is poking fun. But there have already been lots of great new tracks this year, so I hope you enjoy this little sample of the ones I have been able to check out so far. I have a lot more to sort through, and when I get some spare time I may be able to put together some more of these. BiH 44 feat. A-Cat, Tove Styrke, The New Pornographers, Day Wave, Yuko Yuko, Tobias Jesso Jr., Taylor Swift, AKIINE (remixed by Niva), The Amazing, Lightning Bug, Hollow Coves (remixed by Ghosts), Circ
