ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 214 A Courageous Gift - The Power of Brain and Tissue Donation in Rare Disease Research with Anne Rugari Anne Rugari is an advocating powerhouse, an author of two children's books, a mom, and two of her children have passed away from Krabbe disease. She joins us to share her personal story and also share her knowledge about tissue and organ donation. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you share how you became part of the rare disease world? In 1986, my second child Nick received a diagnosis of Krabbe disease, or globoid cell leukodystrophy, a terminal disease that took him just after his first birthday. I also had a three year old son who was unaffected and we decided we probably wouldn't have another child with a rare disease if we wanted more children. In 1999, my daughter Gina was born and tested for Krabbe disease, confident the odds were with us. Unfortunately, she tested positive. As a result of an umbilical cord blood transplant she had at three weeks old, she did remarkably well and lived to fifteen years old.  What were your considerations when deciding to donate Gina's brain for research? It's an emotional, practical and religious decision. There are so many factors that play into the decision. For me personally, I wanted to make sure I was making a sound decision morally and spiritually. I felt we weren't going to learn more about the disease unless there were human tissues and samples to study. It was a decision I felt strongly about to help others. There's a source of comfort knowing that the tissues donated are being used to move research forward.  Why is it important to consider and arrange tissue donation in advance? It's emotional and you don't want to be making those decisions at a time when you've lost them. There's also some coordination that needs to be planned, ensuring there's a pathologist available at the hospital for the retrieval. Planning in advance allows you time to coordinate the details, like if passing takes place at home instead of the hospital, and notifying the funeral home so they can coordinate with the pathologist. Getting the logistics organized in advance makes the transition when someone passes away easier. In April of 2020, singer-songwriter Stephanie James and I discussed her (at the time) recent move from Boston to Los Angeles. Now, she's calling Beantown home once more and there's been a lot learned along the way.   In this episode, Stephanie and I reunite to talk about her experiences on the West Coast—the people, the places and of course, the music. She talks about some of her favorite spots to catch shows or just grab a slice of pizza. We look at the life lessons her time in LA taught her and how she's grown as an artist.   Stephanie dives into life in Boston and the people she's happiest to be around. Of course, she's been playing lots of shows, including some with Sofar Sounds, and we talk about the venues she's been a part of as well as changes to the city's musical world. We also discuss her recent single releases, “I Could Use a Laugh” and “Just Like Me.” Both come from some tough experiences, but you may be surprised to learn just who they're about. I know I was.   Opening the show is an excerpt from “I Could Use a Laugh” and “Just Like Me” closes out the interview. There's lots more in store, so be sure to check out her site and socials for all the details.

In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

We're back in the Garage Studies classroom to discuss the poetic masterpiece, "Just Like Me"! The first version by The Wilde Knights (1:25) gets us talking about iambic dimeter, and the poetry of John Skelton & Robert Frost. As one does. More importantly, the song has a mmmarvelous, Mike Mitchell-esque guitar solo. In late 1965, Paul Revere & The Raiders made the song a hit (44:28).  They slow the song down, cut the bridge, and replace the strange, clipped enunciation of the original with the breathy, growly, sexually "desparate" vocals of Mark Lindsay. It also features a famously freaky double-tracked solo by Drake Levin. Fast forward to 1967, and The Poverty Five kept the spirit of '65 alive (1:31:31). This one is wiiiiild - the shrillest garage screams ever, and tambourine that'll give you tetanus!! Finally, in 1981, Pat Benatar and her band took the song on, but they didn't exactly hit it with their best shot (1:53:13). If you love the original, you better run from this version, because it's a heartbreaker. Now leave us alone to cry!!

Any band that hammers along for 43 years should be praised. But for a hardcore outfit that first seethed “I don't wanna live / To be thirty-four / I don't wanna die / In a nuclear war” 42 years ago on their 1980 debut Group Sex, pushing on for over four decades is a bit of a miracle. The Circle Jerks should be honored with a skanking statue in their hometown of Hermosa Beach, California. “If you would've told me in my 20s that I'd be in a seminal hardcore-punk band in my 60s, I would've said ‘you're fucking crazy, dude! I'm going to be dead by that time,'” jokes longtime Circle Jerks bassist Zander Schloss. “Now I say, live slow, die old!” The Circle Jerks were formed in 1979 by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and ex-Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. (Hetson has also been a member of another seminal SoCal punk rock band, https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-bad-religion (Bad Religion), from 1984-2013.) They were joined by bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer. Group Sex is one of the most important albums in the first swell of hardcore. It's worth noting that the 14-song collection was crammed into less than 16 minutes of tape. Tasmanian devil Morris raged his commentary on sex, drugs, politics, the rich, and even self-reflection. His bandmates redlined to keep up. Hetson's swift, stabbing guitar parts pierced and slit through the slamming, double-time rhythmic pistons that were Lehrer and Rogerson. Their 1982 follow-up, Wild in the Streets, contained five songs over two minutes long and three covers (“Wild in the Streets,” “Just Like Me,” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”), but all 15 tunes were still laced together with the same frenetic guitar bursts and rambunctious rhythms of Group Sex. The last of their most-influential works was 1983's Golden Shower of Hits, which alternated between short, melodic mayhem and slower-but-still-acerbic stompers. The next year saw the arrival of Schloss, who contributed heavily to the band's final three studio releases: Wonderful (1985), VI (1987), and Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities (1995). While out in support of the latter, their major-label debut, the Circle Jerks imploded. In subsequent years, Hetson focused on Bad Religion, started Punk Rock Karaoke, formed Black President, and built out his Hetson Sound studio. Schloss played guitar for Joe Strummer, drove the bass for the Weirdos, and even entertained on the silver screen, starting with the role of Kevin in Repo Man. While Morris battled health issues (he fell into diabetic comas in 2008 and 2013), he was able to get several projects off the ground and revisit old ones including Midget Handjob, Off!, and FLAG. The latter's a Black Flag byproduct featuring former members bassist Chuck Dukowski, guitarist/vocalist Dez Cadena, and Bill Stevenson—who produced most of their 1980s catalog—on drums, plus Stevenson's https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/descendents-stephen-egerton (Descendents) bandmate https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/descendents (Stephen Egerton) on guitar. Before the current celebratory run marking the band's first live shows in 11 years (and first full U.S. tour in 15), they announced drummer Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles of Death Metal) would be propelling the Circle Jerks' runaway train. And since the band's core members are now all in their 60s, and the resolution of the ripping “Live Fast, Die Young” is yelled out at each show (“I don't wanna live / To be fifty-seven / I'm living in hell / Is there a heaven?”), they're well aware that according to their own canon they shouldn't be here and certainly not having this much fun. “I never thought the Circle Jerks would tour again, but you know what? Dreams do come true, and in some weird way, we're doing better than ever and this world tour proves it,” remarks Schloss. But is

Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.Deuteronomy 6:5-9  In today's episode, we have the opportunity to hear from Georgette Forney, the president of Anglicans for Life. Georgette had an abortion at age sixteen and later experienced healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation after going through an abortion recovery program. Through that, she developed a greater understanding of the negative impact abortion has on women and the need to highlight the issue as an abortion survivor.Georgette is going to share with her heart on why teaching kids about the sanctity or sacredness of life is important and practical ways to do so. Michelle talked about her journey from a child growing up in a home filled with literacy, then becoming an educator to principal. Finally why she started a company like Just Like Me books which represents children in particular from the Black community. She also shared with us her vision and creation of the much needed Meanwhile in Africa curriculum for students in K-5 grades. How to Create Marketing That Actually Scales

Today I'm continuing the Digital Landlord series and I'm going to be talking about how you can create a mass market digital asset, reach more people and hit that $1 million goal.A lot of people sell a few of their digital assets then see sales drop off. They say it's because Facebook ads have dropped off or YouTube ads have declined or because they've run out of steam. It's actually because what they are selling is a small market digital asset that only a few people want. So, how do you create an asset that more of the market wants? There's 2 ways to do it. The first way is called Lazy Messaging and the second is the Just Like Me technique.First up is Lazy Messaging. If you are out there trying to sell what you do as a hobby or what you do for a living as a digital asset and it confuses your audience, they aren't going to buy. You need to cut the jargon and make the information accessible to your buyer. Buyers don't want to work to understand your product, they just want it to work. The Just Like Me Technique is the story you are telling in your marketing. If you are telling your customers a story about you, you're actually telling them a story about themselves. The customers you attract are going to, most likely, be just like you with the same beliefs and values as you. You have to go back and tell the beginning of your journey so your customer can bond and relate to you.Go out there and tell your own story, find your audience and sell your asset. If you want to learn more about telling your story, visit https://www.digitalnomad.com/Podcast/

Laura and Evan run The Center for Compassionate Leadership in New York (http://www.centerforcompassionateleadership.org/ (www.centerforcompassionateleadership.org)). The Center is the culmination of Laura's life's work. For 40 years, she worked for tech and media companies in both the commercial and non-profit world. For the first 20 years she had a traditional career path and chased the American Dream. It was a personal trauma in 2000 that caused her to “come off the overwhelm… and settle into an inner journey.” For the following one and a half decades her contemplative practices were separate from her business life, albeit in time she came to recognise that meditation and yoga were benefitting her business leadership, and her relationships with friends and family. It was in 2016 that she decided to integrate her contemplative life with her business career. Laura and Evan tested their work with PhD students at Cornell University and have since developed a number of routes to developing and sharing compassionate leadership around the globe. They look to integrate evidence-based practices (and there is a growing body of evidence) with contemplative wisdom. There are four elements to their work: building a community, research to develop the understanding of compassionate leadership, thought leadership, and education and training. Their main goal at present is to provide a global hub for what are often isolated pockets of leaders who want to connect with their peers and grow together. Laura and Evan see compassion as a process that is embedded into the everyday rather than something you keep in reserve to respond to specific events. Listening is a foundational skill for compassionate leaders. But awareness, connection, empathy, understanding, and a desire to take action are all essential and need to be practiced on a daily basis: research on the companies that responded to the Brisbane floods of 2011 showed that the most effective responses emanated from those that had engaged in compassion training in advance. The Center's model for compassionate leadership conceives of it as an “inside out” process. It starts with self-compassion, then compassion for others, and finally for the greater whole. The Center integrates a number of different practices into their training. Self-compassion practice examples include breath attention, posture and mindfulness. A practice called “Just Like Me”, designed to help individuals appreciate their common humanity, and address unconscious bias, is used in the work on compassion for others, while a practice called “Interconnectedness” is an example of a practice to help develop compassion for the greater whole. Laura and Evan are working hard on the question of how organisations become communities of compassionate practice. Compassionate leadership differs from our normal understanding of the ‘heroic leader', but Evan would argue that compassionate leaders are authentic heroes. Traditional ‘heroic leaders' tend to be rescuers or saviours, but the vulnerability, empathy, and willingness to relinquish control required to work compassionately demand heroic courage. Additionally, part of the bravery of a compassionate leader lies in her preparedness to surrender status and pride for humility.  Some businesses within the tech industry have bought into Compassionate Leadership, for example Google with Project Aristotle, and in the UK the NHS has a Compassionate Leadership initiative led by NHS Improvement and The Kings Fund. Many manufacturers have taken to it, however other industries have a long way to go. Laura's view is that there are pockets of beautiful work happening but maybe “0.1 percent” of US businesses practice compassionate leadership. Evan describes the first barrier to compassionate leadership as “our lizard brain”, our natural propensity for flight, fight or freeze when we are under duress. We have the ability to think differently courtesy of our mammalian brain but it's...
