The Buddha taught a path of awakened living, but how does that manifest in today's world of constant connectivity and widespread suffering? How do we keep our hearts open without being defined or hardened by the pain that surrounds us, whether personal, collective, or historical? How do we navigate the paradox of holding both pain and joy, without mistaking suffering for punishment or personal failure? Can we infuse our compassion with wisdom and perspective to find the agency to take meaningful action in our communities? In her new series, Engaged Compassion, Sharon delves into these questions and more, engaging in candid conversations with a diverse group of teachers, activists, and changemakers. For the fifth episode in the series, Sharon speaks with Mirabai Bush, marking her third appearance on the Metta Hour. Mirabai is an author, social entrepreneur, teacher, and spiritual leader. She is recognized for her pioneering role in integrating mindfulness and contemplative practices into secular sectors of American life, including business, higher education, law, and social activism. Mirabai's contributions include co-founding influential organizations such as the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society and the Seva Foundation and co-developing Google's Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute. She is also a longtime board member of the Love Serve Remember Foundation. Her latest book, Almost Home, is a memoir published in 2025.Please note this conversation contains discussion of gun violence during and civil unrest at Kent State University in 1970.https://youtu.be/ywY6HGunefwIn this conversation, Mirabai and Sharon speak about:The process of writing a memoirWhy Mirabai went to the EastWhat drew Mirabai to activism Meeting Ram Dass and Neem Karoli BabaMirabai in the civil rights movementSustaining engagement over timeNon-attachment alongside passionLoving Awareness as taught by Ram DassHow acceptance leads to change-makingThe role of hope in activismRevolution is bread and rosesSeva Foundation's rootsMirabai's advice for social engagementStaying informed in a balanced wayHow communities respond to compassion actionThe Lovingkindness Nun in BurmaAdditional ResourcesTo close out the episode, Mirabai leads a “Just Like Me” meditation. Reading Retreats - What it is: Paid reading retreats where people travel to quiet, upscale settings to read their own books—mostly in silence—alongside strangers. - The price: Typically $1,000+ for a long weekend, often selling out months in advance. - Why it works: People are burned out by screens and distractions and are paying for structure, silence, and protected time to focus. - Social without pressure: It offers light community—being alone together—without forced conversation or networking. - Cultural tailwinds: Fueled by BookTok, wellness travel, and nostalgia for slower, analog experiences, turning reading into a premium lifestyle activity. Of Interest - Delta Air Lines said Wednesday it will “meaningfully reduce” its capacity growth plans in the near term. AFTER BULLISH COMMENTS DAYS EARLIER - Delta joined United and JetBlue in hiking its checked bag fees this week as jet fuel costs surge. Health Breakthrough - Revolution Medicines said its pancreatic cancer drug daraxonrasib succeeded in a Phase 3 trial. - RevMed said its drug almost doubled the typical length of survival and slashed the risk of death by 60% versus chemotherapy. - The company said it will soon seek FDA approval using a Commissioner's National Priority Voucher, which grants a quicker review. - It is a small?molecule oral oncology drug, taken as a daily pill, not chemotherapy or immunotherapy. - Stock up nicely on the news... China PPI - China's factory-gate prices rose for the first time in more than three years while consumer inflation moderated in March, amid a surge in oil prices as the Iran war upended global energy markets. - The producer price index grew 0.5% from a year earlier, the first growth since September 2022, ending the longest deflationary streak in decades. For the first quarter, the PPI fell 0.6% year on year. China PPI and CPI Intel - Intel's stock had a ninth straight winning day on Monday, up 58% over that stretch. - Shares of the semiconductor company are soaring after a series of announcements and major partnerships with Google and Elon Musk. - CPUs are seeing a resurgence as agentic artificial intelligence continues to gain traction. Getting in front of an audience to communicate on camera certainly doesn't come naturally to all (most?) attorneys, but if you're feeling embarrassed by your lackluster video presence, there are ways to overcome those on-camera nerves. Jared talks with Kerry Barrett about how she helps professionals sharpen media skills to increase their visibility and present confidence and credibility to their audience. In the Rump Roast, they play “Candid Camera”, where Jared asks Kerry questions on the history of all things video. What was the last truly silent film? What band played the first-ever music video on MTV? Listen in to find out if Kerry's up to the trivia challenge. And, lastly, hating on Caitlin Clark is utterly ridiculous. Jared expounds upon the many reasons why WNBA players (including Caitlin's own teammates) need to take advantage of the hype and bask in all that Caitlin Clark is bringing to women's basketball. ----- Since Video Killed The Radio Star, here's a playlist featuring songs that had some of the best music videos. ----- Our opening song is Two Cigarettes by Major Label Interest. Our closing song is Just Like Me by Thruline.

ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 214 A Courageous Gift - The Power of Brain and Tissue Donation in Rare Disease Research with Anne Rugari Anne Rugari is an advocating powerhouse, an author of two children's books, a mom, and two of her children have passed away from Krabbe disease. She joins us to share her personal story and also share her knowledge about tissue and organ donation. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you share how you became part of the rare disease world? In 1986, my second child Nick received a diagnosis of Krabbe disease, or globoid cell leukodystrophy, a terminal disease that took him just after his first birthday. I also had a three year old son who was unaffected and we decided we probably wouldn't have another child with a rare disease if we wanted more children. In 1999, my daughter Gina was born and tested for Krabbe disease, confident the odds were with us. Unfortunately, she tested positive. As a result of an umbilical cord blood transplant she had at three weeks old, she did remarkably well and lived to fifteen years old. What were your considerations when deciding to donate Gina's brain for research? It's an emotional, practical and religious decision. There are so many factors that play into the decision. For me personally, I wanted to make sure I was making a sound decision morally and spiritually. I felt we weren't going to learn more about the disease unless there were human tissues and samples to study. It was a decision I felt strongly about to help others. There's a source of comfort knowing that the tissues donated are being used to move research forward. Why is it important to consider and arrange tissue donation in advance? It's emotional and you don't want to be making those decisions at a time when you've lost them. There's also some coordination that needs to be planned, ensuring there's a pathologist available at the hospital for the retrieval. Planning in advance allows you time to coordinate the details, like if passing takes place at home instead of the hospital, and notifying the funeral home so they can coordinate with the pathologist. Getting the logistics organized in advance makes the transition when someone passes away easier. Discuss plans in advance with your care team so they can help with arrangements and support you. In April of 2020, singer-songwriter Stephanie James and I discussed her (at the time) recent move from Boston to Los Angeles. Now, she's calling Beantown home once more and there's been a lot learned along the way. In this episode, Stephanie and I reunite to talk about her experiences on the West Coast—the people, the places and of course, the music. She talks about some of her favorite spots to catch shows or just grab a slice of pizza. We look at the life lessons her time in LA taught her and how she's grown as an artist. Stephanie dives into life in Boston and the people she's happiest to be around. Of course, she's been playing lots of shows, including some with Sofar Sounds, and we talk about the venues she's been a part of as well as changes to the city's musical world. We also discuss her recent single releases, “I Could Use a Laugh” and “Just Like Me.” Both come from some tough experiences, but you may be surprised to learn just who they're about. I know I was. Opening the show is an excerpt from “I Could Use a Laugh” and “Just Like Me” closes out the interview. There's lots more in store, so be sure to check out her site and socials for all the details.

When my oldest, Allison, was 11 years old, my sweet wife insisted that "When Allison turns 12, ONE of us is moving out!" Later, she invoked the "Mother's Curse" on Allison..."someday, you'll have a child JUST LIKE YOU." That meant I had to come up with my own curse, which I call the "Father's Curse." "You're going to marry someone JUST LIKE ME." What do you do about the choice your kids make about their life partner? Can you make sure that they make the right choice? Tune in as we discover how to get your kids to choose the right person. Reach out to me at ken@kenwilliamscoaching.com, or get on my calendar at https://tidycal.com/kenwilliams/intro-meeting

Any band that hammers along for 43 years should be praised. But for a hardcore outfit that first seethed “I don't wanna live / To be thirty-four / I don't wanna die / In a nuclear war” 42 years ago on their 1980 debut Group Sex, pushing on for over four decades is a bit of a miracle. The Circle Jerks should be honored with a skanking statue in their hometown of Hermosa Beach, California. “If you would've told me in my 20s that I'd be in a seminal hardcore-punk band in my 60s, I would've said ‘you're fucking crazy, dude! I'm going to be dead by that time,'” jokes longtime Circle Jerks bassist Zander Schloss. “Now I say, live slow, die old!” The Circle Jerks were formed in 1979 by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris and ex-Redd Kross guitarist Greg Hetson. (Hetson has also been a member of another seminal SoCal punk rock band, https://www.premierguitar.com/gear/rig-rundown-bad-religion (Bad Religion), from 1984-2013.) They were joined by bassist Roger Rogerson and drummer Lucky Lehrer. Group Sex is one of the most important albums in the first swell of hardcore. It's worth noting that the 14-song collection was crammed into less than 16 minutes of tape. Tasmanian devil Morris raged his commentary on sex, drugs, politics, the rich, and even self-reflection. His bandmates redlined to keep up. Hetson's swift, stabbing guitar parts pierced and slit through the slamming, double-time rhythmic pistons that were Lehrer and Rogerson. Their 1982 follow-up, Wild in the Streets, contained five songs over two minutes long and three covers (“Wild in the Streets,” “Just Like Me,” and “Put a Little Love in Your Heart”), but all 15 tunes were still laced together with the same frenetic guitar bursts and rambunctious rhythms of Group Sex. The last of their most-influential works was 1983's Golden Shower of Hits, which alternated between short, melodic mayhem and slower-but-still-acerbic stompers. The next year saw the arrival of Schloss, who contributed heavily to the band's final three studio releases: Wonderful (1985), VI (1987), and Oddities, Abnormalities and Curiosities (1995). While out in support of the latter, their major-label debut, the Circle Jerks imploded. In subsequent years, Hetson focused on Bad Religion, started Punk Rock Karaoke, formed Black President, and built out his Hetson Sound studio. Schloss played guitar for Joe Strummer, drove the bass for the Weirdos, and even entertained on the silver screen, starting with the role of Kevin in Repo Man. While Morris battled health issues (he fell into diabetic comas in 2008 and 2013), he was able to get several projects off the ground and revisit old ones including Midget Handjob, Off!, and FLAG. The latter's a Black Flag byproduct featuring former members bassist Chuck Dukowski, guitarist/vocalist Dez Cadena, and Bill Stevenson—who produced most of their 1980s catalog—on drums, plus Stevenson's https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/descendents-stephen-egerton (Descendents) bandmate https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundowns/descendents (Stephen Egerton) on guitar. Before the current celebratory run marking the band's first live shows in 11 years (and first full U.S. tour in 15), they announced drummer Joey Castillo (Queens of the Stone Age, Danzig, Eagles of Death Metal) would be propelling the Circle Jerks' runaway train. And since the band's core members are now all in their 60s, and the resolution of the ripping “Live Fast, Die Young” is yelled out at each show (“I don't wanna live / To be fifty-seven / I'm living in hell / Is there a heaven?”), they're well aware that according to their own canon they shouldn't be here and certainly not having this much fun. “I never thought the Circle Jerks would tour again, but you know what? Dreams do come true, and in some weird way, we're doing better than ever and this world tour proves it,” remarks Schloss. But is
