Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains

It's often said that slavery is America's original sin. But the kind of slavery most of us learn about in history class—the brutal, dehumanizing enslavement of Black people in the Southern states—wasn't the only or even the first kind of bondage in the Americas. On this episode of Lost Highways, we look at a far-less institutionalized form of forced labor and servitude widely practiced in the American West. And as we'll see, enslavement has taken many different forms. We'll look at the ways power and economics in the Borderlands helped to perpetuate slavery in the United States long after its official abolition. We'll also look at the ways this history of Indigenous slavery continues to affect descendants, some of whom struggle to reconcile their familial and genetic pasts with their sense of belonging in what has been their homeland for generations.

Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains

On this episode of Lost Highways, we'll take a look back at how Title IX's passage in 1972 inadvertently codified the separation of sports by sex. And while the law opened the door to equal opportunity in sports and education for women, it also placed sex at the center of how we define fairness without fully addressing issues of equality where gender and race are concerned. We'll also meet Donna Hoover, the young woman who, in 1976, went out for the boys soccer team at Golden High School in Golden, Colorado and wound up changing women's sports in America forever.

Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains

On a sleepy summer evening in Boulder, Colorado, in 1974, three young Chicano activists sat in a car at Chautauqua Park at the base of the iconic Flatirons—the giant red sandstone rock formations that sit above the foothills. Then, at approximately 9:50 p.m., the car exploded. Two days later, another car in downtown Boulder exploded, killing three more young Chicanos. Their deaths came against the backdrop of the Chicano movement and the social justice activism of the 1960s and ‘70s. On this episode of Lost Highways, we'll look back at Los Seis de Boulder—the nearly-forgotten group of six activists in the Chicano movement who were fighting for student aid and representation on the CU Campus, and the unresolved mystery of their deaths.

It's Friday, and we're looking back at the biggest stories of the week. First, Meow Wolf announced 165 layoffs this week, including 50 at Denver's Convergence Station, which turns three years old in September. So host Bree Davies, producer Paul Karolyi, and one of our favorite regular guests — stand-up comic and Casa Bonita entertainer Joshua Emerson — are talking about where Meow Wolf goes from here. Plus, we're celebrating 420 early with our dream (and nightmare) blunt rotations, Denver style. And as always, our wins and fails of the week.  Bree mentioned our episode with David Thomas, the professor of fun; our visit to the nightclub inside Convergence Station; the Lost Highways episode on the DPD; our walking tour of Cap Hill's LGBTQ history; her interview with former Miss America Marilyn Van Derbur; and our coverage of the allegations facing Jay Bianchi.  Paul talked about Colorado's new neural data protection law and Mayor Johnston's latest encampment sweep. Joshua discussed DU's big hockey win. Bree mentioned the charges against Jay Bianchi and a child sex abuse vote at the statehouse. Bree asked which legislator was the only one not to vote for the neural data bill. Check out all the votes on all the different versions of the bill here.  How do you feel about Meow Wolf after almost three years in Denver? We want to hear from you! Lost Highways: Dispatches from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains

For nearly a century-and-a-half, archaeologists have been studying Mesa Verde in hopes of deciphering what happened to the Ancestral Puebloan people who lived and thrived there for so long. For many, it remains one of the great mysteries in the history of North America. On this episode of Lost Highways, we'll explore the way that historians and archaeologists try to solve these kinds of mysteries, and how they know what they say they think they know. Where does that confidence come from? How confident are they, actually? And what happens when what we think we know changes?

On this episode of Lost Highways, we look at the mustang, the wild horse of American myth and legend. Though they're widely revered as symbols of untameable American freedom in the West, the reality of the wild horse in the 21st Century is far less romantic. From the long history of the horse's evolution in North America to the helicopter roundups on rangeland in The West, we'll follow the blurry line between the way we've mythologized horses to how we actually treat them.

Westerns often reveal more about the period when they were produced than the era they portray, but the genre won't die. On this episode of Lost Highways, History Colorado's Dustin Hodge traces the rise of The Western in American pop culture, the significance of landscape in film, and the moral guidelines that set the boundaries for US films produced from the late-19th Century to the present. From classic to revisionist and contemporary films, Westerns have both created and pushed back on the myths America tells itself.

As the war in Ukraine and Chinese spy balloons have brought long dormant fears of a nuclear attack back to public consciousness, we look at the way the Cold War reshaped and modernized the already militarized American West as it became the stage for a global high noon with the Soviet Union. We also look at the ways NORAD's vigilant watch for threats beyond our borders may have made us feel safe, but also left us vulnerable to threats from within and the instability of our own nuclear arsenal.

This weekend, we're proud to present an episode from our friends at History Colorado and their podcast “Lost Highways: Tales and Investigations from the Shadows of the Rocky Mountains.”  A few weeks ago, we brought you the little-known historical tale of Black homesteaders and The Dry, which has been preserved thanks to some innovative work being done at History Colorado. This episode of “Lost Highways” explores another, much better preserved story of Black homesteaders in Colorado and their community near Greeley, called Dearfield. A fourth season of Lost Highways is in production now, with a planned release beginning in January 2023, with eight episodes exploring where the myths and realities of the West converge. They'll look at the complicated history of western films as propaganda, the vexing management of wild horses, the legacy of the west's first black millionaire among others. While we're working on Season 4 of Lost Highways, which will debut in January of 2023, here's an episode of CITY CAST DENVER that features History Colorado's Dexter Nelson II talking about "The Dry," a nearly forgotten, all-Black farming community in southeastern Colorado. This particular episode came out on September 22, 2022. Nelson is the Associate Curator of African American History and Cultural Heritage here at History Colorado. He recently finished working on a project called The Black History Trail, an interactive part of the new History Colorado app that includes audio and self-guided tours of a number of significant sites of African American history throughout Colorado.

Class is back in session and this time we are going to try to talk smart about a dumb movie!  Truth or Dare made a whole bunch of money, but it wasn't exactly a deep film.  It did use a very interesting motif in horror called "the liminal space" and today we are going to discuss how that space works and why it made Truth or Dare an engaging movie. Show Notes: 2:20- Tyler just watched the new Blumhouse movie Unfriended: Dark Web, head on over to Signal Horizon and read his review. 3:00- If you haven't heard of author Robert Aickman he comes very highly recommended.  Tyler really liked his short story: Mark Ingestre: The Customer's Tale.  It has been reprinted quite a bit, most recently in The Late Breakfaster's and Other Strange Stories by Robert Aickman. 3:50- Mike really likes a Brian Evenson story you can find in Aickman's Hiers.   4:10- Mike is reading a new collection that is on Kindle Unlimited called Lost Highways, but it had to take a back burner when get got Vastarien Issue #2 in the mail.  He is always excited to talk about Ligotti and Vastarien, so check out why he thinks the Vastarien Literary Journal is the most exciting thing in horror literature right now. 5:30-  Orrin Grey is an author that both Mike and Tyler really like right now, you can check out the short story "The Granfalloon" in The Best Horror of the Year Volume 10. 6:45-  Dark Corners of the Web: Some free short fiction that goes along with Truth or Dare is the excellent episode of PseudoPod that just came out, The Fainting Game by Nino Cipri. 13:15  Jeff Wadlow was also involved in Kickass 2 and The Strain.  How did he get mixed up in Truth or Dare?  Most likely money. 17:45- The Canadian Journal of Career Development has a great article about liminal spaces entitled Constructing the Future in the Liminal Spaces Between Adolescence and Adulthood: Responsibilities, Careers, and Social Contexts by Amanda Benjamin, José Domene, and Kim Landine.   26:30- Tyler drops his "unified theory of Truth or Dare" at this point.  It is super interesting and believe it or not he did come up with it off the cuff. 35:15-  Yes, there is a periodical named Slayage that is put out by the Whedon Studies Association.  Michael Starr's excellent article about liminality and The Cabin in the Woods can be found here to prove it. 38:00-  Tyler references the Stephen King short story, "The Jaunt" which is easily one of King's greatest short works.  It was written all the way back in 1981 and it is still fresh today, you can find it in his collection Skeleton Crew which is probably on your bookshelf right now.  If it is not, buy a copy over on Amazon. 41:00-  Not going to link to anything by John Edward because he is a fraud.  Don't give him any of your money, but if you would like to support The Horror Pod Class and SignalHorizon.com that would be super cool and you can do it over on Patreon.   44:30-  Mike talks about Ligotti (of course) and Matt Cardin's excellent analysis of "The Shadow at the Bottom of the World."   55:15-  Wan't to give us a shout out?  Maybe a shout down?  You can connect with us over at the Horror Pod Class Facebook group!

Welcome back class, it has been a long summer and the crops have not been particularly bountiful.  What are we to do?  Burn a big ass wicker man of course!  Specifically we are going to be talking about the 1973 Folk Horror classic The Wicker Man.  Not to be confused with the absolutley horrible Nick Cage remake.  First we talk about our favorite new movies and books, then we get into Folk Horror.  What is it?  Why does it only seem to work in the old country?  Why did the Nick Cage movie suck so bad?  Show Notes: 02:30- Tyler just finished watching Extinction on Netflix and the final grade is: "Well, its pretty good."  Netflix has had a bunch of scifi bombs as of late, so at least this is an improvement. 03:15- Tyler and Mike both have copies of The Best Horror of the Year Volume 10 edited by Ellen Datlow.  Tyler talks about some of his favorite picks from this year's volume.  Its awesome, as usual. 06:00- Mike just finished reading and reviewing Lost Films, a short story anthology from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing.  Go check out his review and then pre-order a copy, both Tyler and Mike think it is awesome.  Best themed anthology so far this year! 08:00-  Mike is currently reading Lost Highways, which you can pick up on Kindle Unlimited.  Review will be up soon, but while you are over at Kindle Unlimited check out some of our best horror picks. 10:00- LaVar Burton Reads podcast did an episode featuring Rebecca Roanhorse's short story, "Welcome to your Authentic Indian Experience."  It is wonderful and you need to listen to it.  BEES!! 13:00-  Want to watch the 1973 folk horror classic The Wicker Man?  Head on over to Shudder.com and use the promo code "Signal" for some extra time on your free trial.   16:00-  Much of what Mike talks about comes from a great new book that just came out on Kindle Unlimited, We Don't Go Back: A Watcher's Guide to Folk Horror.  Author Howard David Ingham did a successful Kickstarter a while back for the book and it is totally awesome!  Looking forward to more of his work as he has more of these type of books planned for the future. 19:00-  Tyler and Mike try to figure out why Folk Horror doesn't quite work in the United States.  Both Sleepy Hollow and The VVitch kind of fit.  27:00-  Watch out.  There is a ton of nudity in this movie.  Like way more than you would expect. 40:00-  Tyler drops the phrase "Aboriginal Orientalism" to describe the way we Americans sometimes look at Native American culture and spirtuality.   41:30-  Tyler talks about a great article from Mikil J. Koven entitled "The Folklore Fallacy: A Folkloric/Filmic Perspective on The Wicker Man." 50:00-  Musical Theater meets Charlie Manson.  Good way to describe this one.
