As the Olympics begin, two members of Team USA joined me for this week's podcast, which we hope you subscribe to! Both of these Olympians are javelin throwers who have been training in Birmingham, Alabama. After my humming version of the Olympic theme song,, we get into our chats that will inspire and motivate you - as a fan and athlete and in your faith walk. (5:25) 2 time Olympian and Texas A&M alum Maggie Malone just set a new U.S. women's javelin record with a throw of more than 221 feet! She talks about giving God the glory and how she's mentally preparing for the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, as she travels there real soon. Does she even have "expectations"? (7:25) Javelin throwing is part of her faith, not the other way around. Find out how she intends to do God's will and encourage others. (11:05) Maggie has learned the hard way, with doubts and even giving up the sport a few years ago. She is open about what happened after she did not do as well at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, then rebelling against God. (13:13) How is training with weights and cardio for the javelin different than other sports? There's also mental training for Olympic athletes. (16:45) Her success in college helped vault Maggie to where she is now, not even knowing what a javelin was until she was 19 years old but now using that to be a role model for young women. There's gotta be nerves heading to the Olympics. (20:30) Maggie has advice on how to deal with that anxiety, give it to God, and be thankful. We will be rooting her on in the javelin events August 3 & 6! (23:31) Curtis Thompson just found out earlier this month he's going to his first Olympics! He talks about what it was like to get that call and what he hopes to so in Tokyo. (25:21) The javelin throwing for him started in high school when he wanted to "throw the stick thingy," eventually getting a scholarship to do that at Mississippi State. In training for being on the biggest stage, (27:06) Curtis tells us about the highs and lows, his strength conditioning, family support, and opportunities to inspire others. (31:09) By just inches, he missed out on the 2016 Olympics. What was that like? (34:11) With more Olympic athletes testing positive for COVID-19. he reacts to concerns and precautions being taken in Tokyo for the Games. (36:46) Curtis also has a message for everyone about dreams and determination. He also gets to mold young athletes now, as a coach for throwers at Spain Park HS in Central Alabama. (41;30) In the final segments, we talk origins of the Olympic anthem for "Stuck in My Head" and dive into a Bible verse about strength from God - used by many Olympic gymnasts - for our "Parting Gift," then closing prayer. Thanks for listening! And please share it with your friends using #RunTheRace podcast. Also, write a quick review about it. For more info, go to www.wtvm.com/podcast/.
Yep, we have an Olympian on our podcast! What timing! We could not be more thrilled to have Maggie Malone as our guest. She holds the American record in women's javelin and will be heading to Tokyo representing the US in the 2021 Olympics! Just having her talk about how she trains and focuses would be enough, but we do more at reCHARGE Your Life:) Maggie shares her incredibly personal story on her struggles with mental health and the Olympic hangover that she managed after the 2016 Olympics. She had identity issues and needed to figure out how to bounce back and address the actual issues in her life. Maggie was vulnerable and reached out to friends and asked for help. She also shares her story on becoming a Christian and the importance that faith has in her life. Raised Catholic, Maggie didn't have a relationship with Christ. She wanted to find that. Take a listen to Maggie's story. You will feel inspired and proud to watch her in Tokyo!! Maggie is a Client Success Leader at Wildsparq – a powerful, online leadership development tool built for companies that care about their people, their legacy and the impact they will make in the world. Maggie earned her Bachelor of Education in Human Resources Development as well as her Master's degree in Marketing from Texas A&M University. She ran track at the University of Nebraska before transferring to Texas A&M, where, in 2016, she became the first female javelin thrower to win an NCAA title and U.S. Olympic Team Trials title in the same season! Maggie enjoys playing competitive team sports – volleyball, basketball and softball as well watching movies and singing. When defined and executed well, a Center of Excellence can be more than a model or process to follow; it can set the bar for the organization by which each part can play a role in making things better. It's not automatic—it requires dedication—and customization. When an organization embarks on its journey to transform how they do business both externally with customers and partners and internally with their employees and contractors, many take off down the road without a clear vision for where they're headed nor what's possible. Some get stuck in the ins-and-outs of "process improvement." In contrast, others find themselves grappling with the never-ending task of "automate everything"—often, simply for the sake of "automate everything."As you'll learn from our discussion with our guests Maggie Malone Swearingen from Protiviti and Josh Waldo from Nintex, a Center of Excellence is a state of mind that goes way beyond process improvement and accomplishes way more than automate everything. This might resonate with you in a moment of "of course, that makes total sense," but you'll hear much more from Maggie and Josh than you might expect.Have a listen to learn about what they hear every day from organizations of all sizes looking to make things better for the business by transforming their business processes with a clear view for what it means to be excellent in how things are built, managed, and executed.Enjoy, and automate!(This contains promotional content: learn more)GuestsJosh Waldo, Chief Customer Officer at Nintex (@Nintex on Twitter)Maggie Malone Swearingen, Associate Director at Protiviti ECM Solutions (@protiviti on Twitter)Be sure to visit Nintex at https://itspm.ag/itspntweb to learn more about their offering.Want more automation stories? GREAT episode this week as we sit down with Christine Witulski and Maggie Malone of The Besser Museum of Northeast Michigan, and learn how lucky we are to have such a great museum right here in Northeast Michigan. We learn a little bit about each of them and then talk about the museum and learn a little more about each of them and their journey to the museum. We then get a little education about how difficult it truly is to not only collect items but maintain them and all the behind the scenes work that goes into a museum. We then close it out by Christine doing a Top 5 Things You Might Not Know About Jesse Besser Museum! Brad and I didn't want to leave our listeners hanging so we did a quick Top 5 Favorite Books of all-time! It's a great pod, jam-packed full of stuff, thanks for giving us a listen!
